Topamax (topiramate) for Migraine Prevention: "It is seems to be brain damaging, it was never approved for these off label conditions. It gave me bladder stone even though I drank plenty of water. My migraines never ceased or got better. Was on it over 10 years."

Topamax (topiramate) for Seizure Prevention: "Not sure about this drug. Started at 25mg 2x a day for 2 weeks, worked up to 50mg 2x a day. Still having seizures 1-2 times a day. Had it upped to 100mg 2x a day and now I don't have seizures but there's so much pressure in my head I feel like it's going to pop. It also makes my 2mg xanax ineffective, I've gone from sleeping 12hrs straight to maybe 2-3. I've lost 10 pounds but it's horrible to say I'd rather have a seizure to release the pressure and be chunky. Calling the dr in the morning."

For Bipolar Disorder: "I'm a 35 year old female with rapid cycling bipolar 1 and anxiety. I take 250mg topirimate and 300mg quetiapine as mood stabilisers plus 300mg venlafaxine, 30mg buspirone, and 1mg lorazepam. Initial side effects were fatigue, brain fog, and loss of appetite. Fatigue eased up after two weeks but it can still be a bit tough to wake up in the mornings. Brain fog is much better but I'll occasionally misspell words when I'm writing or say the wrong one when I'm speaking. Appetite remains lower but I'm still able to enjoy a healthy diet. No new effects have sprung up. Like many of you, I've lost weight. It started when I began the tablets and the weight has stayed off. My mood cycles have basically stopped, leaving me functional and stable, and my symptoms feel under control. I'm not doing weird impulsive things, like constantly overspending while manic, generally being a nightmare, or having to deal with crushing depressive crashes. It's also great for preventing my migraines."

For Migraine Prevention: "Trokendi XR (100 mg) was added to my regimen of Botox every 12 weeks. I’ve been on Trokendi for 2 months. I’ve lost about 15 pounds. Overall, it’s been helpful for migraines. Brain fog? Yes. I haven’t decided that it is a deal breaker yet. I’m a college student so it’s a little difficult though. It has interfered with my birth control pills (yaz) & caused break through bleeding. It can increase your risks for pregnancy, especially if you have breakthrough bleeding. Regarding irritability, my pharmacist said it was most likely stress bc that side effect only affects 2% of patients on Trokendi Xr. The MOST IMPORTANT THING that I could find no info online about was what time to take Trokendi. I called my doctor & asked because I didn’t have clear instructions. He said take it at bedtime. It will make you drowsy. Please don’t try to take this in the morning, especially at a higher dosage. You will also sleep off some of the nasty side effects by taking it at bedtime."

Topamax (topiramate) for Migraine Prevention: "I have 6 days of migraine per month nicely relieved by Tramadol plus being in a dark room. My new Dr wanted me to try Topamax. First dose I had a bad headache, diarrhea and inability to concentrate. Day 2 I had the same side effects plus a dull mood and elevated body temp. These effects are all unacceptable to me so I am going back on Tramadol. It is a mild narcotic but I have not had any addiction in 10 years. The mental effects of Topamax were awful, plus I have GI problems so adding diarrhea was no good. And it caused headaches."

For Migraine Prevention: "This med was VERY HELPFUL at keeping my migraines away. In 4 weeks, only had 2 breakthrough migraines, excellent for me. BUT, my eye dr told me I had to quit taking it because one of the side effect that resembles glaucoma. A healthy iris is suppose to be 45 degrees of color (for a lack of better explanation), mine is only 5 degrees. Have to quit cold turkey and do a follow up appointment. If it is not attempting to go back to normal, I have to go to a specialist whom will use a laser to open it back up. Of course, the only thing I've found so far to help would also harm me...."

For Migraine Prevention: "I have been on Topiramate for over 4 years for migraine prevention, and in the very beginning was great. Went from 20+ migraines a month on a 50 mg dose to less than 5 with very few side effects (coke tasted bad, I drank water) no big deal. Now I’m up to 300mg a day and since then I’ve had kidney stones, major tingling in hands/feet, severe back pain, dry eyes, and migraines at least 4 days a week on top of other side effects. I don’t know what to do. I’m hoping it’s just the medicine doing this."

For Obesity: "I started taking 25 mg of topirimate 2x a day for migraines 4 months ago. My dr told me it could also help me lose weight which would be an added benefit because I was about 50 lbs overweight at the time. I should also add that right now I’m on 50 mg 2x per day & that’s the dosage that is helping me with weight loss. I wasn’t losing weight on 25 mg. I have to say that when you first start taking this there are some weird side effects (the tingling hands and feet were the worst for me) but they do go away with time. I did get a little bit of the brain fog that people talk about but it really wasn’t TOO bad, but I wasn’t on a very high dosage. I can imagine it could be bad on a higher dosage. Anyway, since I’ve started taking this I haven’t had one migraine whereas I was averaging 6 per month before. And as for the weight loss, I have lost 20 pounds without even trying. When I eat I get full much quicker than I did before. I am averaging weight loss of 1.5-2lbs per week now"

For Migraine Prevention: "I got headaches as a child and then migraines in my 20’s. I am a fit person and work out, all beta blockers and blood pressure meds dropped my pressure too low. On my rescue meds, Botox, and topiramate extended release. Taking it at night like I am told. I wake up with blurry double vision that goes away.My feet and hands and jaw line are tingly on/off during the day. Super tired! And in the beginning of taking this, maybe TMI ( I was going from every day bowel movement to once weekly) Plus nausea, no appetite, constipation, and I was consistently thirsty! Now I am At 125mg, need to be 150mg. BM are better, thirst is better, tingling and blurry vision still there, tiredness is not AS bad...still can’t run as far as I use to without being tired. And I have lost weight, not that I wanted/needed to. Has it helped with migraines? At this point yes I think so... I was Just too busy feeling like crap otherwise to have one!"

Topamax (topiramate) for Migraine Prevention: "Day 3 on this and was prescribed for migraines but also watching weight due to weight gain from taking nerve meds. Current weight 216lb and looking to lose back under 200 pounds. I have experienced tingling in hands a bit with topamax in the first 2 days which is considerably fast but definitely from these pills. Will update after a few weeks."

Topamax (topiramate) for Fibromyalgia: "Do not take this if you are even remotely sensitive to side affects. I was considered extremely smart and an excellent memory with a background in english and communication. I cannot remember what I said or did yesterday....Much less my life memories."

For Migraine Prevention: "I was having 2-3 migraines a month, nothing worked. My neurologist put me on Trokendi-XR, The final dose that worked for me was 150 mg per day, it worked like a miracle. But the side effects are now becoming too much to handle. The memory loss of words drives me crazy, but the worse is urinary retention. The feeling of having to go constantly. I am in process of weening of this medication."

For Migraine Prevention: "On Trokendi XR I started having brain fog and confusion. Instead of having a full migraine I experienced a headache halo with a heavy head feeling. I was disoriented. 2. Waves of thinking that this medicine is tolerable, that I needed to adjust, and then feeling like I was so done. 3. Brain fog lifted, began noticing clumps of hair falling out & no migraine, strange. I felt like I just dropped acid and I'm waiting for it to kick my ass. The next few days my equilibrium felt off. If something took my attention off of my current task I would forget every detail about what I was doing & would have to retrace my steps to get back. The cognitive effect of this drug is terrible. The doctor was going to get me all the way up to 100 mg on trial packs then lay it on me at 820.00 mth prescription. I'm so glad that I decided to get off. I have been off of it for 2 days and my mind is starting to clear up. It builds up in your system and takes a while to flush out. My insurance plan didn't cover this med."

For Migraine Prevention: "I have been on this medication for about 5 years now to prevent migraine headaches. I take 50mg twice a day and have maybe 1-2 mild migraine headaches over a 6 month timeframe now compared to 8-10 mirgraines a month prior to taking it. The only “side effect “ I noticed was a tingling feeling in my feet, almost like they were asleep a lot, but that is it. If I forget a dose or two, I can feel a headache coming on right away. For me, this medication is well worth taking it!"

For Obesity: "I have been in 25mg of topiramate, 1x a day, mid afternoon (my binge likelihood increases around dinner until bedtime) I have had some form of an eating disorder since I was 16. I am 41. I stopped starving a few years ago and binge with purging about every few months. I gained 60 pounds over the last 4 years. I managed to not gain any weight the last year, but unable to loose anything. I simply fluctuate a few pounds. I had tingling in my hands on my 4th day, bad numbness, that has subsided to occasionally tinglingly. From day 4 to day 9 I have lost 5.2 pounds. In the last 3 yrs of attempting weight loss I couldn't loose 5 lbs in a month. I am eating 3 meals & maybe 1 snack. The best way I can describe it is that my attitude toward food is "meh" I am a carb addict, yet I am unable to binge, even if I wanted too. I stop eating even though I still have "hunger pains" (I am eating full servings) I have always struggled w/ eating until STUFFED. Not in the last week."

For Migraine Prevention: "Doctor prescribed topiramate 25mg to me for mild everyday headaches don’t know why considering it’s mainly for migraine or seizures. I took it for a month no effects good or bad. Then got a refill my mental and physical capabilities have slowed, my legs feel weird like numbness tingling at times, I feel like a zombie, couldn’t even sleep. Will never take again I hope the effects are gone soon."

For Bipolar Disorder: "I was happy to be prescribed a bipolar medication that would not cause me to gain weight which the others had done, however; the minute I started taking topiramate I experienced bladder issues. It was pretty debilitating and painful so I had to stop immediately unfortunately. I can't comment on whether it would have worked mentally or not."

For Obesity: "I started this med back in late November 2017 and lost 40 pounds by early Jan 2018. For some silly reason, I went off the med but watched what I ate, then that slowly went out the window as well. While I didn't gain any weight back while I was off the med, I didn't lose any either. I went back on my healthy eating regime yesterday, but the sugar cravings were so bad last night that I binged and ate half a bag of chocolate morsels. This morning the craving was still there and then I remembered the topiramate. Took a half dose to get me through the day and will begin the normal full dose tonight. Took that half dose about a hour ago and cravings have settled down and I'm chilling. It also helps with my mood disorder so I guess I will be a lifelong fan! Love the med!"

Topamax (topiramate) for Fibromyalgia: "Been taking Topamax since 2004, off label, for peripheral neuralgia in my feet with very positive results. Did not realize the additional effects on fibromyalgia until I ran out for about 2 weeks...won't let that happen again!"

For Borderline Personality Disorder: "I have been on many meds for bpd and nothing worked. I was suicidal daily. I was on a cocktail of meds which wasn't helping so I just stopped them all. I did not feel better or worse. As with most days I was calling the suicide helpline. I was going to work every day. My manager would not allow me to go on the sick leave. My therapist was urging me to call in sick saying I wasn't in any state to hold down a job. I was still taking my sleeping meds 5 pills which I take the minute I get home from work every day so I sleep until 5 next morning. I was so depressed, anxious, suicidal, I can't bear the evenings and weekends which are just hours of crying and self harming. I found this site and read about topimax, I put it to my doctor. We tried 50mg for my bulimia which I do as self harm It helped. I told my doctor that maybe if we upped the dose it may help as a mood stabiliser. To cut a long story short I'm on 200mg in the morning and 200mg in the evening, just this is my 3rd day and already I feel a difference :)"

For Migraine Prevention: "I would 100% advise against taking this drug. I was prescribed Topimirate by my neurologist when I was 17 as a means of migraine prevention and it made me so horrendously ill. Along with nausea and severe dizziness, I lost my muscle coordination and memory. I could barely walk up a flight of stairs without falling over myself. As I was in my final year of school, I was sitting exams at the time while trialling this drug. I had an upcoming piano exam but was unable to take it because I had completely forgotten how to play due to my muscle coordination and memory being so severely impaired. I never suffered with vestibular migraines until I took this drug. It has left me with lasting side effects such as vertigo which can never be reversed. Dangerous drug when it reacts badly with the recipient"

For Seizures: "Controls seizures in concert with keppra. However others do as well. My career and life require cognitive function. This med continues to depreciate memory and function over time. I have been using it for a long time. More than 15 years I think. I did lose weight however managed diet and exercised. It certainly helps. Summary if cognitive function and memory are high on your list of priorities select another med. There are many options today. Don’t pick it for weight loss. Skinny and stupid is not what you want"

Topamax (topiramate) for Seizure Prevention: "After day one of topamax I felt strange. Generally sick. Very nervous. Aggressive. And then very depressed. I kept taking them. My appetite decreased as did my energy levels. And I was over thirsty all the time. Some abdominal pains and areas of numbness. Particularly of the face. Mouth. Eyes etc. Then I broke out in massive bruises. Very dark large haematomas on. My arm. I also had bone pains in my lower back and legs. I felt like I was being POISONED to death. So I stopped taking topamax after a month. After two days I already am feeling much better. This should not be allowed on the market. Again. Topamax feels like a very cruel lethal drug/poison.... Don't take it."

Topamax (topiramate) for Migraine Prevention: "I have been taking Topamax for 15 years since 2003. I use it for Migraines and mood disorder. It has been a life saver for me. For the mood disorder it was at 50mg at night, but for migraines I am not at 125 (50 in morning and 75 at night). It works."
