"I never had acid reflux in my life. Was given omeprazole while in the hospital for 3 days. Heart-related issue. Dr. wrote me a prescription for it. I have no clue why. When I tried to stop taking it, I had acid reflux really bad, so I continued to take it. Lost 30 pounds in a month. Started to have muscle spasms, headaches, complete unwellness, and lost a lot of muscle mass. I was finally able to get off omeprazole. Started to gain weight back and I look healthy. This is a very bad drug from a nutritional standpoint. Will never take it again."

"I started to have problems with swallowing and felt like I had a lump in my throat. Constantly had to clear it in order to complete a sentence. I was experiencing heartburn. I went to an ENT who put a camera up my nose and into my throat and said all was good, but I have GERD. I had never heard of this until now. He suggested I take 40mg of Omeprazole every day and see how it works. So, it did help with the issue with my throat, but the side effects from it are horrible. I have been nauseous, feel like I am going to vomit, dizzy, shakes, chills, panic attacks, rapid heart beat, severe anxiety, and severe insomnia. I have tried taking it for three weeks and as the days go by, the side effects make me feel so bad I cannot function. I AM NOT GOING TO CONTINUE WITH THIS PILL!!! IT IS HORRIBLE!!!!! It literally has ruined me. I am hoping it clears my system quickly. I feel horrible."

"I started taking this medicine four days ago. It makes my whole system feel suppressed. Shortness of breath, I feel dizzy, tired and like I am going to pass out. I have pressure on both sides of my head and a headache plus palpitations, it’s a really horrible drug. I cannot wait for it to leave my system. I feel so ill."

"I have been sick since about 2011, and it rapidly got worse until as of late I wasn't even barely able to leave my bed. After throwing up blood, I wound up in the emergency room 2 days ago. A nurse came up to me and said, 'Hey, between you and me, are you sure it isn't your stomach meds (Prilosec) causing this?' So I got home later that night and looked up the side effects, and sure enough, severe bloating, dizziness, loss of consciousness, hallucinations were on the side effects list. So I figured I'd skip my meds for 2 days. My gut is now half the size it was, most of the pain is gone, and I think I am going to scream at the doctor at my next appointment for letting this happen to me for so long. I am starting to think that doctors are not here to help."

"Took omeprazole for one week, felt dizzy, and decided to stop. Two weeks later, I had to retake it again, and that was a huge mistake I made. This medication left me feeling very, very dizzy, I couldn't walk on my own, and it gave me eye pain and weakness of the body. It took me two weeks with so many blood tonics and fluids to get back on my feet. This medication is awful. Please, no one should use it."

"I really never comment on websites such as these, as I’ve been fairly healthy for all of my life. I was recently diagnosed with GERD and was told to take a 40 mg pill of omeprazole daily. I implore you all to exhaust all options before taking this pill. I am only on Day 1, and I have had anxiety and sentiments of hopelessness. Even as someone who is generally very happy and calm, I now cannot watch a TV series without getting anxiety after taking this medication. I will be halting its consumption and hoping that the side effects disappear soon."

Omeprazole "A great medicine. I'm on 40 mg daily due to the feeling of my food being stuck in my throat. It was so bad at one time that I purposely made myself vomit for relief. After having my esophagus looked at - and finding out I also have a small hiatal hernia, doctor said my 'flapper' doesn't close, or stay closed. So here I am religiously taking this medicine and mostly loving life. If you miss a day you will again feel miserable. I will say that over the years I have experienced 'breakthrough' reflux at one time or another but never for a second day. Very happy."

"I had GERD in Sept, and my doctor prescribed this drug. I got anxiety for 2 months non-stop after I stopped the drug. I didn’t know what caused my anxiety. I took it again in March, and my anxiety came back, never going back to this drug again!"

"I am so glad I did some research and found these reviews. I literally never comment or leave reviews on anything, but decided to leave one on here. I literally just switched to Omeprazole because my new insurance company doesn’t cover Lansoprazole. I have been on it for 5 days and have been experiencing terrible anxiety every day on it, which has resulted in me getting very little sleep. I even experienced something I have never experienced in my life, which was a panic attack that woke me up. Since it has been such a short time on this drug, I didn’t even think of the drug being the reason for these symptoms, so I thank you all for posting. I am going to stop tomorrow and see if my anxiety goes away."

"I've been on Omeprazole going on 10 years. No one ever mentioned anemia or any of the other problems that can come from this medication. I've been trying to get off this med for close to a year. Went down from 40mg to 20 mg, not too bad. Now trying to get off 20mg. For the last week, I've had chills, headaches, diarrhea, extreme heartburn, anxiety, body aches, exhaustion, and depression. This is awful. It helped reflux but at quite a price. B12, MAGNESIUM, FERRETIN SHOULD ALL BE MONITORED WHILE ON THIS MED. I had a hysterectomy and gallbladder removed in the last 5 years and wonder if those surgeries could have been avoided."

"Been on this medication for a good 2 years or more. If you get any joint or tendon pain, then quit this med immediately. One day both my thumbs had a lot of pain. Then, about 3 months later, a cascade of pain in my right shoulder, right elbow, lower back, and left hip. I could barely get out of bed and it was impossible to even put on my socks. Seen 3 specialists, but because of myopic vision, they could only think it was arthritis. Finally, I put 2 and 2 together and just quit the Omeprazole, within two days, I started feeling better. But the damage was done as 3 tendons in my shoulder were severely damaged and my hip still has pain. Everything else went away. No faith in doctors, but thanks to the internet and sites like this, we will get by. It is an effective med, but the side effects are very damaging."

Omeprazole "Doc prescribed this for me, but I didn't think it would help, since my main symptoms of shortness of breath and chest tightness, and rarely heartburn. Left it in the cabinet for months until recurring stomach pains landed me in the ER. All blood tests, urine tests, and ultrasounds came back normal, and once again, my doc suggested the Prilosec. Finally caved. I kid you not, within the first day my stomach pains disappeared. I had the best night's sleep the first few days that I could remember, realizing it was actually heartburn waking me up (I contributed my early wake-ups to anxiety or poor sleep habits). Absolutely no side effects. I can eat whatever I want. I feel like a new person after one week. Hoping this lasts once my 14 days are up!"

"I had taken omeprazole years ago for acid reflux and had no side effects. I recently started taking it again (20 mg) and I’m on day 4. Something changed. My anxiety is very bad. Like bad! I’m out of it, feeling like I’m not in the real world. I’m dizzy and my body aches. Horrible headaches too! And I’m extremely depressed. I’m going to stop taking it tomorrow, and hopefully, I start to feel better this week. Hopefully, I don’t have withdrawals or anything. Couldn’t be worse than this anyway. I’m going to give it a 3 just because it worked years ago for me with no side effects."

"I am 26 and have dealt with heartburn and acid reflux for many years. Unfortunately, my mom deals with it too. I have been on this medication for two weeks. My heartburn is gone, but I now have some horrible side effects. Dizziness, nausea, muscle pain, vertigo, blurred vision, anxiety/paranoia, and more. I had a full-blown panic attack, where I felt drunk. I still feel terribly anxious a day later. I don’t recommend this at all. I have decided to stop taking it and will be discussing more natural options with my doctor. I would much rather have had heartburn than experience these awful side effects."

"I've been taking this wretched drug for nearly a year now and only just realized it's causing all these insane side effects that have sent me to the ER multiple times. Since taking this drug, I've had horrific pains in my shoulder and left side chest (6 occasions attended ER due to thinking it was a heart attack or something), tinnitus and general ear infection/problems in both ears randomly, nausea and dizziness on occasion, liver pain/disease which is getting worse despite doing everything to make it better, itchiness on my scalp and back, pain in my ribs and sides, stiff neck, increased nervousness and anxiety, memory isn't as sharp anymore, a constant feeling of impending doom and a multitude of other horrible side effects. Having been reading all these comments on various forums recently due to a particularly bad few weeks of pain and misery, it's clear that omeprazole has had a big part to play in ruining my life this last year."

"I was on pain medicine for a kidney stone, which caused severe stomach problems. So, MD put me on omeprazole for 10 years. Had severe pain in my ribs. Went to the doctor continuously, and he never suspected the medicine. Six months after I stopped the medicine, the pain in my ribs disappeared. Had severe pain in my shoulders and hips for 10 years. Was endlessly tired. The doctor never suspected the medicine. I went to him for years because of the fatigue. Another doctor finally diagnosed the side effect of B12 deficiency caused by omeprazole. Now I have osteoporosis and have had three broken bones in the past three years. Omeprazole caused me to have strong sugar cravings because I wasn’t getting enough nutrients to my body. I now have numbness and tingling in my hands and feet and may have lupus."

"I had a bad bout of reflux, and the doctor prescribed 40 mg daily. I felt relief, but about 2 weeks later, I had blood in my urine. I went to the doctor right away because I was freaked out. I told them that I read blood in urine was a side effect, but I had to do an ultrasound to check my kidneys and bladder, as well as doing a urinalysis. Thankfully, all tests came back okay, and the doctor told me to stop the omeprazole. No more blood! I also had increased anxiety and thought it was just nervousness because I was sick. Now, after reading these posts, I think it was the drug."

Omeprazole "This medicine saved my life. I was in pain and miserable. Tried all the OTC stuff Zantac, Pepcid, Prevacid, and many others with no success. Then I tried omeprazole and within days I was better. Great medicine. Would definitely recommend."

"I had chest pains, thought I'd pulled a muscle, so took ibuprofen, which gave me terrible indigestion. I went to the doctor's, he gave me omeprazole. It worked wonders for about 3 days, then I started feeling sick. My body felt like it was shocking, I was cold, couldn't sleep, and I had terrible brain fog. I stopped taking it for 2 days, but heartburn was awful, so I started taking it again. I was prescribed 20 mg twice a day, so I thought I would just take one tablet in the morning. I was okay the first day, but by the second, all the horrible symptoms were back. I've been back to the GP, and he has given me Cimetidine instead. This was great for the first day, but by day 2, I felt so ill again. These meds are awful."

"Worst experience, only been 8 days, and I feel breathless all day! I’ve had so many panic attacks, which I think are because of the breathlessness. It has made me constantly anxious about it, then causing panic attacks. I have the worst headache, and my eyes just feel strange, only on 20 mg in the morning! And I’m stopping it straight away! I’m sure it works well for some, but it’s a no from me! My doctor told me to up it to 40 mg as it’s just my GERD, but I know it’s not!"

"I was diagnosed with acid reflux. I took 20 mg a day for 8 months. It worked fine, though I had a constant dull ache in my stomach. I decided to go off of it, and I had the worst acid reflux I have ever had. I could not eat for weeks and lost 25 pounds. I completely changed my diet to low acid, got rid of all sugar and caffeine. A month later, I slowly started getting better. It is now about a month since I stopped. My stomach is better, though it still aches. I do not have much acid. I do have lots of wind passing. My doctor did an endoscopy. Normal. He wants an MRI for pancreatic cancer. He did not believe me when I said that I thought the weight loss was from hyperacidity as a result of going off omeprazole (I read about this everywhere as a common side effect of cold turkey stopping) and recommended that I go back on omeprazole! I am so glad I am off this stuff and returning to a semblance of normality. Shocked that doctors are not concerned about this drug."

"I’ve never had anxiety or depression in my life. I started omeprazole after my doctor diagnosed me with GERD, and it is the biggest mistake I never knew I could make. This drug should be illegal, and I cannot stress enough to not use this. I’m currently off of it and trying to get my body back to a state of normality, with it being a struggle that I shouldn’t have to face."

"I have been taking Prilosec for approximately 5 1/2 weeks because I had very bad heartburn due to a drug called naproxen (I have a hiatal hernia). Over the few weeks, I noticed that I have become extremely nervous, insomniac, have foggy concentration, and blurred vision. I was on Prilosec a few years back, and it did not cause this reaction. At one point, the doctor had me double the 40 mg dosage, and I was taking 80 mg a day. I lost my appetite and also lost approximately 30 lbs since I began this treatment. Currently, due to the insomnia, I am now taking sleep aids, which I do not want to be on either. I get approximately 3-5 hours of sleep a day. Today will be my first day not taking the Prilosec, but I want to know how long it was before people started feeling better. It says you should taper off, so I will take it every other day for about 1 week to see if I feel any better."

"Well, where do I start? I was experiencing a squeezing pain in the center of my chest and heart palpitations, and I was going to the hospital nearly every day. It was so bad that the pain felt suicidal, like my heart was being squeezed. The doctors said it was probably acid reflux, which I thought was absolute nonsense because there was no real proof I had acid reflux. I'm 100% positive that acid reflux wouldn't cause this feeling I had in my chest. It felt more like it was heart-related. Anyhow, they prescribed me omeprazole, and I started taking it every day. After about a week, I felt like I was going to drop dead. Like no joke, I would wake up, and the feeling in my chest was unbearable, like my heart was going to stop. I would wake up with a mouth full of spit, almost stopping me from breathing. I would have crazy chest pains, my heart would suddenly start beating very strangely, and I felt like any day could be my last day alive. The omeprazole also depleted my iron and vitamin D, making me anemic. It's poison."
