For Duodenal Ulcer "I was diagnosed with a very large ulcer about 2 months ago. My Dr. prescribed the liquid Carafate for the first few weeks, but it is extremely expensive. They then prescribed the pill form. This medication has helped so much with my stomach pain and bloating! However, I have had issues with choking on the pill. I don't know why, I have taken pills a lot larger than this one and have had no issues. Be careful when taking this pill, I have ended up getting sick because of it lodging in my throat and causing me to choke."

For GERD "Just started sucralfate for GERD. Working fine. No side effects. No GERD or gas. I prefer to take 1/2 at a time, so I have no swallowing issues. Best relief since I stopped protein pump inhibitors (e.g., Nexium), which gave me a full body rash after many years on them."

For Stomach Ulcer "I took sucralfate for my stomach ulcer for about a week. Had slight insomnia, headaches, and nausea. But it really helped with the burning pain from the ulcer. I could eat, so I was happy. But then, all of a sudden, I started getting crazy back pain. An intense burning and tight feeling in my chest and back whenever I would try and bend forward, move my neck, or even take a breath. Love the instant ulcer relief. Hate the side effects!"

For GERD "I have taken the way more expensive liquid suspension in the past with no side effects other than burping a lot. Now I have switched to the Carafate pill, and I have had the up-and-down bobbing feeling like I got off an elevator. My doctor told me there were no side effects of taking it, but that is annoying. It lasts about a half an hour and makes me just want to lay down. I don't like that side effect, but otherwise it causes no other side effects."

Sucralfate for Stomach Ulcer "I had an (undiagnosed) bleeding ulcer (from gastric bypass surgery). Doctor prescribed the liquid form, but $500 for the liquid?? The pharmacist kindly told me the pill form is $4. Ugh, I hate this stuff! I am supposed to take it 4 times a day, but it starts dissolving the moment it hits the back of my throat... It's like tasting nasty sand! The coughing fits almost get painful, and then it feels like it 'explodes' in my stomach - so I can forget eating for the next 3-4 hours. Ugh. Seems I have a choice (my 'pouch' is still very small 5 months out), take this OR have room for hydration OR food, not all of the above, I am asking my doc tomorrow about it..."

Sucralfate for GERD "I had reflux all day even though I had been taking omeprazole daily for 20 years or more. I had my gallbladder removed about 15 years ago. After starting on Carafate as a slurry 4 times a day, it was like a miracle - no reflux at all. I also removed caffeine, chocolate, and acidic juices. I am now making the slurry in my mouth - pop in the tablet, slurp of water, and swish about until the tablet dissolves, then swallow the slurry and a few more sips of water. The tablet has no taste. I have no side effects. I give this drug 10/10."

For Stomach Ulcer "I was in the hospital for a bronchial issue and was on several high-powered antibiotics that caused horrible stomach issues. I was given sucralfate for ulcers, and it helped immediately. I took it once a day before bedtime for about two months. Shortly after I'd take it, I'd get blurry vision. I stopped taking it when the prescription I had ran out. After a couple of days of not taking it, I developed excruciating and unexplainable back pain that I've now had for three months."

For GERD "Horrific! I took one sucralfate pill, which is very large. The doctor did not tell me how to take it, nor did the pharmacist. I put it in my mouth, took a swig of water, and swallowed, and it immediately got stuck in my esophagus and turned into a powder, very dry powder. It was like taking a fistful of cinnamon and inhaling it. I aspirated, choked, and couldn't breathe for many minutes. Worst experience of my life, and to this day, I think it affected many things after that. Horrible drug!"

For Stomach Ulcer "Diagnosed with a fairly large stomach ulcer. Prescribed sucralfate liquid, 10 mg every 4 hours. Also prescribed omeprazole 40 mg 2X daily. After being on sucralfate for 7 days, experienced severe pain in the left jaw that radiated down the neck into the left shoulder blade. Went to the ER, the cause for pain was determined to be a possible heart attack. Was monitored for blood pressure, EKG, X-ray of the chest area, and blood panel taken. Pain subsided, and all tests did not determine any stroke, heart problems, respiratory problems, etc. Suggested that I could have had an intense muscle spasm, but causation was not determined. I have continued with sucralfate at a lesser dosage. I am periodically experiencing joint/muscle pain, but the ulcer pain is unbearable without this medication."

For GERD "I have been on Carafate now for eight weeks. I started it because I was having gastritis pains in my abdomen from NSAIDs. It seems to have worked. It does cause me some insomnia, I think, and some itching on my face at night. But it helped the gastritis pains. I’m hoping when I go off of it that it continues because I am also on Pepcid twice a day. That is for laryngeal reflux, which is getting better. Has anyone had an itching experience with Carafate? I would also like to emphasize that I take this pill so easily. I dissolve it in hot water, about 30 mL. I stir it up quickly with a straw and then I suck it down within a second with a straw, which gets up every single bit of the medication, and then I follow it with half a glass of warm water. The straw makes all the difference because you get all the medication. I don’t drink the water with a straw because that can cause gas."

For Stomach Ulcer "I have been on Carafate for over a year. My health has steadily gone downhill. I didn't think to look up the side effects. I used to never get headaches. I keep one now. Suffering from severe itching, lower back pain, shortness of breath, awful sweats, tightness of chest. Just feel awful! Didn't take any today, but read that it takes 4 days to get out of your system."

For Stomach Ulcer "I had an allergic reaction to my immunotherapy, which caused stomach acid pain. I’ve been taking this 4 times a day. It helps to take it as soon as you wake up. I get ready for the day, and by the time I’m ready to eat, it’s been 1 hour. Then, two hours after that meal, I take another one... I feel like it’s helping to settle my stomach acid."

For GERD "The only thing that works for me! Having been to the emergency room several times concerning the pain, I now feel almost normal. My GERD was so bad that it had me bending over in pain. I truly got tired of all the testing, doctor visits, and pain. The pain subsided after the second dose of sucralfate. If your doctor prescribes this and you follow the directions, you will feel relief. Antacids really did not do much for me. Too many side effects, and it would only work for about 3 hours or less. I also now watch my diet. I honestly think that the preservatives and chemicals in junk food are the reason for my GERD. I used to chew gum for GERD, it worked temporarily, but I had to chew a package. Then I found out that it had wood resin as an ingredient, so now I wonder if it played a part in creating GERD in my body. Try sucralfate."

For Stomach Ulcer "I have been taking Carafate for over a year. It is making my stomach so much better. It is very hard to take 2 or more a day because I am on so much other medicine. I notice the acid and pain in my stomach when I don't take more than 2 a day. Good luck."

Sucralfate for Stomach Ulcer "Late last year, I went to my doctor because I was having mild stomach pains, little to no appetite, and (the worst and most concerning one for me) completely randomly feeling like I was going to vomit; to the point where I actually had to go to the bathroom or outside, but never did. (Might just be because I have a strong stomach that I didn’t?). And then right after that passed, I would feel extremely hungry - stomach growling and hunger pains. But still no appetite. That was very concerning to me considering I very rarely vomit for any reason. So anyway, I went to the doctor and he told me I had most of the symptoms of an ulcer and he was sure that’s what it was. He prescribed me this medication. I never had any tests or anything done to see inside my stomach or anything though. But I took it as prescribed, and the symptoms went away for a few days but then came back. And now it keeps coming back. Seeing the doctor soon and going to ask for a different medication."

For Duodenal Ulcer Prophylaxis "Started taking this sucralfate in addition to 40 mg Nexium twice a day. The sucralfate drug lessened the burning sensation but resulted in such extreme feelings of fullness, a distended abdomen, and intermittent cramping that I couldn't even work my way up to the prescribed four times a day. Couldn't get through more than a few days. The resulting discomfort and cramping was unbearable."

For Stomach Ulcer "Works great for me with Nexium for my gastritis, but they must be taken separately or it will affect the Nexium being absorbed into my system. I take Nexium before breakfast, and sucralfate before lunch and dinner. Really does coat the stomach well and help a lot. I have always had some gastritis, without H. pylori anymore. Works very well to keep it under control. I don't have any problems swallowing the pills, but I can see why some people would, as they are kind of large. You can't take sucralfate with food for an hour, but you can certainly take it with water or juice. And it's not absorbed into a person's bloodstream, only their digestive system, so that is great. It's not enough for me though, to take only sucralfate. I need the Nexium also."

For Stomach Ulcer "I'm on sucralfate now for over a month, but my problems seem to come and go, so I can't say it's really working (yet). Also, my stool is sometimes dark green, which had me worried. The only place I'm reading about this side effect is here, so I hope it's the medicine that's causing it."

For GERD "I started taking this after leaving the hospital for severe acid reflux and hypokalemia. It has helped with the constant gagging, I couldn't eat anything with my throat spasming. I noticed when I stop taking this medication, my throat starts to spasm again. I have a pill crusher, I crush the pill and stir it in water. My doctor and pharmacist said it's fine to do it that way. The only downside is the side effects I've had so far, which are a bit of a sore throat and nausea. The nausea only lasts an hour, then I'm good to go. The sore throat is off and on again. I've tried so many acid reflux pills, and my acid reflux is still bad but not as bad as it was when I was in the hospital with the constant throwing up. My chest and throat get real tight after eating, this helps a bit with that. I just wish there was a medication that could permanently cure this torture. I'll keep taking this for right now until I speak to my GI."

For Stomach Ulcer "As with many others, this pill is a choking hazard. I have found that slathering it in butter is the only way to get the pill down. You really have to push it to the back of your throat, otherwise, it gets stuck and you're doomed. I have also been experiencing severe double vision. I am presently off the pill to see if this resolves this issue. I did find a few other comments from others with eye problems, which is good to know. I just wish I could find an indication of how long this actually stays in your system once stopping."

For Stomach Ulcer "This sucralfate is a miracle from our Heavenly Father. I've been in so much pain for a week and went to the ER. The CT scan didn't show anything, but the doc sent me pantoprazole and sucralfate. The PPI doesn't do anything alone, but with the sucralfate it's a MIRACLE! You can feel it immediately when it reaches your pain/burn. I'm on my first day, but I can feel 95% less pain. Now it's just a dull feeling. I'm guessing a few more days and pain should go away 100%. Use it, everyone!!"

For Stomach Ulcer "I was taking this drug, sucralfate, for a stomach ulcer, and it was working. Then I started swelling, I got hives in places that never should be seen-a rash that took over my entire body. A major takeover. I stopped taking it and had to go get stronger antibiotics and antihistamines. Benadryl would not even come close."

For Stomach Ulcer "This medication helps, yet I still have acid build-up. Please dissolve this medication before swallowing, or you will gag. My doctor told me that after 2 months of taking this medication, I can stop taking it. Yahoo! If you have stomach pain and acid reflux, please get seen to. I found that it has helped some and is worth it to take this so the ulcer gets healed. Take care, everyone. I wish you all the best. Don't wait when it comes to your health, get help."

"To all those with horrible skin reactions: The suspension contains red dye, which makes my throat close rapidly and causes skin reactions. Consider asking your doctor to switch you to the pill version (there is one by TEVA with no coloring at all). So far, this seems to be calming both reflux and pain."

For GERD "I have had GERD for over 20 years. I’ve taken Aciphex and was switched to generic omeprazole years ago. I have been well controlled with 10 mg 1x a day. Once in a great while, I need a ranitidine when I’ve overdone it. I have developed osteoporosis, so the new GI doctor put me on sucralfate instead. Oh my! Trying to take it 2 hours after eating since I have other pills I need to take a half hour before eating in the morning. So, constant mild heartburn. Have to eat on a schedule. Thanksgiving was a killer! Spicy food and because of meal timing, I didn’t get my midday pill. I manage to get it down, but overall, I’m not happy with this drug. I take it 3x a day. The doctor said to take a 4th if needed. I can’t seem to get the 4th pill in the schedule."
