Morphine "I fractured C2 and C3 along with T4 and T5 in 1976. I had chronic pain, 7/10, for close to 20 years, 24/7. Finally, my doctor started me on a 'pain contract' taking MS Contin 60 mg a day, which went up to 100 mg twice a day because of my tolerance. I was at that level for about 10 years with 60 mg of Oxycodone X 2 a day. At this point in time, I have reduced the MS Contin to 45 mg once a day and 15 mg Oxycodone X 2 a day for BT pain, which works quite well for me. My level of pain has gone down from 7/10 and 8/10 to 4 and 5/10, and I have a decent quality of life again. I will most likely continue on this daily routine for a long time to keep my quality of life at these numbers."

Morphine "I had tried all the short-term meds, like hydrocodone, oxycodone, etc. Over half my back and neck, the pads in between the vertebrae are crushed or not there at all. My doctor put me on 60mg MS CONTIN 4 times in a 24-hour period, with hydrocodone as a breakthrough, short-term med. I need not say I rarely touch the hydrocodone. Sometimes I only take 2 or 3 MS CONTIN a day. MS CONTIN 60mg is the best long-term for me. Thank God for 60mg morphine, pain-free!"

Morphine "Dr. switched me to Morphine IR 15 mg every 6 hours and Morphine ET 15 mg every 12 hours. I have severe lumbar facet joint syndrome, and my left L5/S1 facet is so swollen it presses against my sciatic nerve at times. Now that I’m on Morphine IR, I have my personality back intact, and I have found some relief! I recommend a genetic test if you feel meds aren’t working. I was on Percocet, which activates the kappa receptor, which can cause dysphoria (my experience). If you must be on these types of medications, trust your body to tell you, and if all else fails - ask for a genetic test for pain. It can be a very helpful tool in avoiding meds that won’t work or give you unwanted side effects!"

"I have had 20 years of pain, 4 of which were severe. The causes of pain are herniated L3, 4, 5 and S1 discs, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, and sacroiliac joint malfunction. MST Continus 40 mg three times a day has enabled me to resume a level of fairly normal activity. I’m very grateful for this. An adverse side effect is insomnia."

Morphine "Kadian is AMAZING! I've been a pain sufferer for decades. I suffer from spinal stenosis/spondylosis; cervical neuralgia, etc. I've had multiple cervical fusions (anterior & posterior) with hardware. Anyone who's been through multiple fusions knows the pain changes, but never truly goes away. Pain was somewhat manageable with MS Contin, but I would still 'pay' for it if I ever pushed myself, traveled, etc. Since 1998, I never had more than a week or two between moderate/severe pain flare-ups. Since Kadian, I've gone as long as 3 months without one! I even flew to Europe for a 10-day vacation (which was a ton of walking/sitting) without any issues! Kadian works and works AWESOME!"

Morphine "I was prescribed this medicine after a surgical procedure on my arthritic hand. As recommended, I took one in the morning that was supposed to last all day. I did not feel any relief whatsoever from my pain during the first week. I continued taking them and accidentally found one of the pills in my poop. I took it out of the toilet, and it was still enclosed in the thick plastic surrounding the pills. When I opened the thick plastic cover, the powdery substance was still inside. Needless to say, I discontinued use. I would not recommend this medicine for anyone who is in real pain."

Morphine "I've been taking Morphine Sulfate IR 15 mg for two years now. It gives me 80% relief. I have two herniated disks and degenerative disk disease. I'm on disability. I can at least walk for longer than 10 minutes now. I know I should be on something a bit stronger, but here in Michigan, doctors are very reluctant to prescribe due to those who abuse!"

Morphine "Zydus is the worst brand MS ER 60 I have ever been given in over 15 years! It only works 8 hours instead of the 12 it is supposed to. No pharmacy should be using this. I have six large screws in my spine; L3-5, and suffer chronic and debilitating pain. I have never been given a generic that didn't work - until now. Stay far away from Zydus!"

"To be completely 100% honest with you guys. I was given morphine for about a week, and it was the extended-release ones. It didn't work for me. The morphine my doctor gave me was extended, and it was supposed to last up to 12 hours, and at the end of the day, it didn't do anything. The only thing morphine did for me was make me a little nauseous, and my stomach was cramped up, and I couldn't go to the bathroom. Now, if the doctor were to try the fast-acting morphine, I bet you that would have been a lot better, but most doctors do not want to give out fast-acting medications anymore, and those are the ones that are going to work."

"I've been on MS Contin for about 18 years for multiple chronic pain conditions. I take it responsibly, and I consider it a huge responsibility to protect my health and my doctor's licenses. I had an odd side effect within 24 hours of the first dose. It gave me energy! I have also taken the immediate release. I don't find MSIR helpful (15 mg). Also, someone commented about an Avenza (sp?), the 24-hour Rx. I was given a prescription several years ago (1 Rx, one month cost approx. $1,200). I didn't find it useful. Since '91, I've been on patches, other narcotics, etc., but MS Contin has been a miracle prescription, giving me some quality of life. Grateful for any relief. God bless all who deal with this pain issue."

Morphine "I was on Kadian for a few years, and this medicine worked well for me. If the doctors prescribe it the right way (increasing the dosage every month or so), then it can be a very effective medicine. Sadly, after several years, I was switched to Opana."

"I have had back problems for a very long time, female trouble (hysterectomy @ 31 yrs old) and fibromyalgia. I also have severe arthritis (runs in our family, I believe). As for rating this medicine, it helped tons with the pain, but the downside (very bad downside) was after taking it for so long. When you stop, you get so very sick. In my opinion, the sickness is worse than coming off of Percocet, Vicodin, etc. I don't know why that is, but that's just what I expect for myself. I know all about slowly cutting down your doses and all, and I surely didn't expect it to be rainbows and sunshine, but in my experience, it was worse than the DTs you get from the others I mentioned. Aside from that, it did help with the pain a great deal."

Morphine "I was in a severe car accident and broke both hips, both shoulders, 6 cervical and 5 lumbar and 1 thoracic vertebrae. I had to increase pain relievers, but the Tylenol with codeine causes my liver enzymes to increase. So, I combine the morphine 15 mg with fentanyl patches (was at 75, dropped to 25, but back up to 50) for immediate relief. This allows me to be able to get out of bed and do activities, and I'm in bed until it kicks in. I'm also on gabapentin 800 mg 3x daily and soma. I have flu-like symptoms when I miss my dose, so having to time my medical appointments to always be exactly on a day when I'm going to run out is an ongoing problem. Also, being on morphine means that I have to have dilaudid after surgeries."

"Four years ago, I was in a bicycle accident and broke my left shoulder. About six months later, I started seeing an orthopedic surgeon and going to a pain clinic. I have been taking 180 mg of morphine IR for three and a half years with great success. I have had two shoulder replacements. The first one failed because the damage around the joint was so severe. The second one gave me about 75% of the usage back, which is amazing. However, I am still in excruciating pain without pain medication. The morphine I've been taking is a godsend. I'm still focused and alert and able to do most of the everyday things I need to do. I also have an exceptionally helpful and loving husband who helps with physical therapy and anything else I need help with. Works for me!"

Morphine "Suffering from ME/CFS for over 25 years; morphine is the ONLY medication that decreased pain to a tolerable level; take 75mg 3 times a day with 10mg Statex (also morphine) for 'breakout' pain; impossible to 'forget' a dose; as the pain lets you know within an hour; 1 major side effect: constipation; controlled by 250mg magnesium 4x day."

Morphine "Works well. I take it every 8 to 12 hours and haven’t had as much pain. If I forget to take it, it’s like starting all over again, easing the pain. I wish I had this a long time ago instead of going from meds to meds, trying to see what works. It’s scary taking it and reading up on it, but from 1 to 10, I will give it an 8. So far, it’s only been 2 months since I’ve been on this medication."

Morphine "Took for chronic pain of knee, back had half of 2 vertebrae removed, and fibromyalgia. This medicine did not work at all for me. I have taken oxycodone and methadone for pain, and they made things bearable. This medicine did no good at all. I was only given 20 mg a day after 80 mg a day methadone and 80 mg oxycodone. This is all the pain clinic would prescribe, so I had to go back to methadone that makes me gain weight and my teeth are rotting out, but I can function and have relief of pain. Still have pain, but I can bear it."

Morphine "I have been in pain for 30 years from my spinal cord being overstretched since age 13. During my growth stage, when your spinal cord lifts away from your lower back, I have spinal bifida occulta. The spinal canal does not make a full circle around your spinal cord, it makes a C instead. A fatty lipoma grew through the C and attached itself to my spinal cord and tethered it to my bones, cutting off blood flow to my nerves, which is causing nerve damage and pain. I have been to more than 20 pain specialists, there is no way to operate on it. So right now, I’m on 6 Oxycodone 10mg, 3 Morphine Sulfate ER 75mg a day, and 2 fentanyl patches 100 mcg/hr every 2 days. Basically, I’m on a huge amount of pain meds-all narcotics. I’m now 44, I still have a huge amount of pain. What I have learned about all pain meds is you build up a tolerance to all of them after a while. There is no magic pill like Morphine Sulfate ER. If you have enough pain, nothing works good enough, and you have to make it work."

Morphine "WAY overpriced almost $800 out of pocket and no one carried it either. One more way these abuse deterrent meds really hurt the ones who don’t abuse anything. Now I can’t afford my meds and my mortgage. I am a guy living with severe chronic pain. I got taken off OxyContin and oxycodone, which was 1/10 the cost out of pocket. Guess it’s suffer and wake up every hour in severe pain till I get insurance. Oh wait, then my doctor will say you’ve been doing fine without morphine for 3 months, so I’m not going to give morphine to you anymore."

Morphine "I have a 2-column L2 fracture of the spine, and I have a spinal brace on. The pain is really severe, and the doctor gave me Oramorph 20 mg every 2 hours, and apart from being light-headed and a little bit spaced out, I am free of pain for the first time in 3 weeks. Off for MRI as the fracture has collapsed more."

Morphine "BRING BACK AVINZA! I've had C1-C2 chronic pain for 36 years now. The closest I have come to how things were before some illegal drunk in an 18-wheeler truck was allowed to kill two friends, change another friend's life, and ruin my life has been AVINZA. It's been a year, and my life again turned upside down, as I have yet to find another morphine that compares to AVINZA. Of course, I am refused to try MS Contin or OxyContin, even though I've taken narcotics responsibly now for almost 25 years. Just bring back AVINZA, as I know there has to be other people like me, though I fear from experience that we who suffer from chronic pain are looked at as irrelevant, and why AVINZA was taken away from us!"

"Morphine medicine saved my life, gave me somewhat of a life that I do NOT have when NOT using morphine. I've had severe chronic pain for 37 years, due to C1-C2 fusion not exactly in place right, and severe multiple head injuries. The only side effect I have had from it is a slowed digestive system, but I have never had to use anything for the slowed digestive tract. It just angers me so when morphine medicine is so often talked bad about, as it saved my life, and it is one of the best medicines for how well it works when used correctly, just like how all medicines should be used correctly. Nothing else has ever eased my pain at all like morphine medicine. I used two different doses for the past 26 years, as the first dose had never been enough."

"By 17, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Now I have arthritis everywhere, have had a vertebral fusion (registered nurse for 10 years, and I took care of gastric bypass patients for 2 of that, ICU for 5), both knees need replacing, and now I am having more back problems again. I attempted suicide 3 times because of the pain. I finally came to my doctor and asked to prescribe and sign a contract. Since then, I have had a disc fusion, found how helpful swimming can be (swim daily now), and I can function so much better! I still have pain (30mg ER 3x daily and 15mg Q4 hr as needed. Usually only 1x/day.) I am so much more active. The only drawback is occasionally I have difficulty urinating. So thankful for this med."

Morphine "I have been diagnosed with MS for 20 years. And just recently had back surgery. I'm taking 30 mg morphine sulfate ER along with 10 mg Norco for breakthrough pain. I'm 4 weeks post-op and still having severe lower back pain, and the morphine does not seem to be touching the pain, which makes me take more breakthrough pain. Has anybody else had issues with morphine not helping?"
