Lansoprazole for GERD "After several months of taking Prevacid, if I don't take it for a day, my symptoms now are 10 times worse than they used to be before I started taking it. Not only that, but the doctor has told me that if I continue to take Prevacid, I will most likely develop osteoporosis (I am only 18 years old). Overall, after taking this medicine for about half a year, my only choice is to continue taking it, but risk being deficient in some essential nutrients and develop osteoporosis, or stop taking it and experience burning pain and reflux every day, and continue to damage my esophagus."

For Stomach Ulcer "I did not have high stomach acid, but I was vomiting blood, and after 3 weeks, was bedridden from this drug. Joint pains started in the femur and spread to joints, broken bones, confusion, burning pain, and took ages before I could walk with muscle activity at all. It is well known, and the facial rash was misdiagnosed as rosacea. I used to walk 30 miles a week. These side effects are in the leaflet; I did not have them all. I am now looking at complementary medicine as there is no recourse from pharmaceutical companies. Pharmacologists will not blame the drug but treat side effects with more. I am getting better, but until there is a test for low stomach acid, this will continue."

For GERD "I started on 30 mg of lansoprazole for 4 weeks; it worked very well, no more acid reflux and I could eat everything. Two days after coming off these pills, my condition became 10 times worse. I started choking at night because my throat was producing foam to protect itself from acid. I could not eat anything without getting severe burning at the center of my chest. I lost 2 stones in weight. I was put on 60 mg of it and ranitidine before bed and amitriptyline. It took 7 months to gradually reduce to 30 mg a day. However, I started getting foaming problems again. I have had to go back to 60 mg daily. The foaming has not gone away after 6 weeks. I just cannot see an end to this cycle. I would suggest if you ever go on these drugs, you take your time coming off them. Taking 15 mg less every month."

For Barrett's Esophagus "I've used omeprazole 80 mg daily, which then stopped working. Famotidine made my skin burn up after several weeks. Pantoprazole caused a bad skin reaction within the first hour. Then esomeprazole 40 mg gave me a bad dry mouth and messed around with my head. Taking 60 mg of lansoprazole works the best for me out of all of them. Least amount of side effects and works the best. Been on it for almost 2 years now! Medicine is starting to work less nowadays, just need an operation on my stomach. There is only so much this medicine can help you with. I do exercise with this medicine, and my acid reflux is bad. I stop doing exercise, and on this medicine, I get better. So people need to understand this medicine can only help you so much with GERD, etc. This medicine is keeping me alive at the moment. Sad but true."
