Clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I had anxiety and intrusive obsessive thoughts so bad that I had insomnia for 3 years. I was an absolute mess, lost 50 lbs, and could barely function. I ended up hospitalized for a week and put on Anafranil 50mg at night. It took about two weeks, but I started to see a light at the end of a very dark tunnel! I had already tried almost everything on the market, and Anafranil finally helped! Today marks 7 years that I have been on this medication. I feel great, and it saved my life!"

For Panic Disorder "I'm diagnosed with GAD, panic disorder, and OCD. I've been on 150 mg of clomipramine for a week, although I started this medication on a low dose in mid-November. So far, my panic is completely gone, and OCD is mild, but I still have problems with anxiety. Is it typical to have anxiety still at this stage in treatment?"

For Panic Disorder "Clomipramine did not work for my panic disorder. The sexual side effects were bad too. I only had success with Nardil (phenelzine). Nardil is the best MAOI, and it cured my panic and depression too. Don't waste your time on SSRIs or tricyclics, ask for Nardil if you want real relief for panic or depression."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "The lowest dose of clomipramine in combination with Luvox gave me dry mouth, nausea, headaches, loss of taste, weight gain, dizziness, fatigue, feeling like needing to pee, and sexual dysfunction. It made me feel numb inside. Some reduction in the intensity of obsessive thoughts due to being so sedated. This drug is very old and strong and did not work for me at all. I quit cold turkey after four weeks and have never felt so depressed."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I have been using clomipramine for 30 years. It has helped a lot with the obsessional part. Side effects are inability to complete climax. A stomach muscle relaxer helps with that."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "Intense drug. Didn’t help me. Side effects were brain zaps, nausea, insomnia, suicidal thoughts, increase in depression and anxiety. Was on it for 4 months at 150 mg. Quit cold turkey. Withdrawal was gnarly. I changed to ERP (exposure and response prevention), exercise, and a healthy lifestyle, and you may be better off."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I have OCD on a few things, which I don't want to share. My OCD increased last year. I felt nausea and also vomited daily on getting OCD thoughts. Initially, my treatment started with a low dose of fluvoxamine, and it was increased to 200 mg/day. My OCD decreased by 50%, but it was not eliminated completely. I still have nausea and sometimes vomiting also. After some time, I decreased the fluvoxamine dose to 100 mg/day because I was thinking I would cover up with strong willpower. But symptoms had not gone, nausea continued, and sometimes I vomited also. In short, my doctor kept me on 100 mg/day fluvoxamine and clonil 25 mg/daily. Later on, my fluvoxamine dose (100 mg/day) was kept fixed, and the clonil dose was increased to 50 mg/daily. Now it's just like magic, my OCD is about 90% gone, and there is no nausea and no vomiting. My mind is also calm and working according to the present situation."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I’m leery about taking the drug because it’s $95 for 30 of them, and I read the comments about it. Seems to make you drowsy and dizzy, which I normally experience with my hypoglycemia. Any thoughts from anyone?"

For Depression "Only took 25 mgs of clomipramine, and the effects were horrendous: shaking, restlessness, all-over body burning, pins and needles, anxiety, nausea, insomnia. It was so bad I ended up in A&E. I'm glad I only took 3 doses."

Clomipramine for Panic Disorder "I have been on this clomipramine since I was 9 years old. It has been the best thing for me. When I had taken myself off cold turkey 4 years ago, I suffered greatly until deciding to go back on. But unfortunately, I didn't give it enough time to work before deciding I had become immune. Tried others for the next three years. A little over a month ago, I decided to try again with this Anafranil, and was put on a higher dosage: 25 mg, x2 a day as needed. Now I don't have to take it every day! Only as needed, and it's an instant calming effect!"

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I started clomipramine due to a sudden rise in panic attacks and severe OCD. (which was super strange because I have only had a couple panic attacks my entire life.) My doctor said this might help my symptoms, and I could not be any happier. It has taken away my OCD symptoms about 90%. This is insane. I can't believe I am even typing this. I have had severe, awful OCD since my childhood, and now all of my intrusive thoughts are gone. If I do have them, they are fleeting and aren't debilitating like they used to be. At the beginning, I had some side effects like extreme dizziness and lack of appetite, but now I feel better and they are lessening. I am confident that this medication saved my life."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I’m 58, suffering from depression, anxiety, and especially OCD. I have been taking Anafranil for 12 years, so I understand it well. My biggest addiction and obsession is my addiction to prostitutes. I have seen about 600 over 30+ years. I take 25 mg Anafranil, as any more, I cannot orgasm, and I get fat and sluggish. Taking more Anafranil does stop my addiction to pros, but my sex addiction just overrides every other thought I have. Please keep on Anafranil for OCD, it does work. Love from Australia."

Clomipramine for Irritable Bowel Syndrome "This drug was a miracle for me. I have irritable bowel syndrome, my main symptoms are urgency to poop, loose stools, and chronic pain in the intestines. But I had to stop taking Anafranil because it gave me a horrible skin side effect on my testicles [genitals]. If you have irritable bowel syndrome diarrhea, you should try it."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "Suffered with severe intrusive thoughts, was on 300 mg of clomipramine for about a year and had side effects of putting weight on (6 stone), dry mouth, shaky hands, just felt like a zombie. Gradually came off of them and started to feel better, then along came COVID and intrusive thoughts came back, so got put back on them but made me feel anxious, so came off them."

For Panic Disorder "Only lasted one day on this drug. I took 25 mg of clomipramine right before bed last night and experienced exhausting, intense, vivid dreams. Woke up groggy and very spacey. This lasted for a few hours before the nausea hit, which lasted most of the rest of the day. For the first half of the day, I was very tired, but not sleepy, and would start crying randomly. I wasn't as lethargic in the afternoon, but the nausea kept me on the couch. Was prescribed for OCD cyclical thoughts feeding into my anxiety. Granted, I haven't had any such thoughts all day, though this may be due to the distraction from the side effects of the drug. For me personally, the side effects outweigh any potential benefits. I do tend to be highly sensitive to medications, though, and have had previous issues with antidepressants. Hope it works better for the rest of you."

For Panic Disorder "Have suffered from a lot of anxiety, panic, and depression, as well as a few unwanted thoughts and feelings for 6 years...!! Tried all SSRIs, SNRIs, anti-psychotics, and two TCAs (imipramine, amitriptyline), none of them can bring a satisfying response!! But clomipramine did!! Difference of day and night just inside 7 days!! No major side effects, only minor ones in the starting days!! Dose: 50 mg at night/daily!!"

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I'll keep it short, I suffered from severe OCD/unwanted thoughts. I tried many different meds and just when I was starting to think nothing was going to help, the Lord directed me to clomipramine. This is the only med that has tamed my OCD/unwanted thoughts. If you suffer from this debilitating disorder, please know you're not alone. I don't think I'll ever be 100% cured, but my life is so much better now!"

For Depression "I'm just starting this medication. I've been off meds for the past 6 years because I kept reading horror stories about what antidepressants do to you, so I went down the natural route, which unfortunately didn't work. My anxiety and depression have gradually gotten worse, so I'm going to give this a try. But I'm so worried that it might make me worse, as I've read a few negative reviews."

Clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "Bear in mind that this, like any medication, may work differently for you, but I can attest to the point that it does not work for everyone. I had a combination of OCD and depression. I took Anafranil for months. For one thing, it didn't do squat for the condition. It didn't help one bit. What it did was make me so tired and lethargic that I could not do a thing. I failed a college semester because I simply could not keep myself awake, and there was not enough caffeine on earth to do it. It made my situation many times worse."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I have tried all SSRIs for my OCD, but they made my condition worse and caused me suicidal thoughts, aggression, and depression. Taking those pills for several months (3 to 4 months on each SSRI), I had to quit them because I had several suicide attempts. Then I met with a doctor after years of struggling who gave me clomipramine! It stopped my suicidal thoughts and reduced my OCD by 90%. Now I have very few obsessions which are very easy to handle. They don't affect me. I started with a very low dose and raised it to 50mg within 3 weeks. Then I noticed a first small difference. After that, I slowly increased my dose to 150mg/day in week 5, and after week 7 (on 150mg/day), it reduced my symptoms by 90%. I am a 21-year-old guy and my weight is 50kg. Loss of libido, dry mouth, little constipation, and mild urinary retention can be a problem for you also, but this medicine is worth it, some of the side effects will go over time. It is old, that doesn't mean it won't work. This medicine is WORTH IT!!!"

Clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I took Anafranil for 5 months at a dose of 25 mgs. Definitely took some power away from the intrusive thoughts, but not fully. Had a hard time with being tired in the morning, terrible dreams, mild constipation. On a positive note, I did not gain any weight and was able to work out regularly. Tried to go up to 50 mg, but that got rid of my libido. Felt like taking an upper and downer at the same time. Some of the time, I felt good, other times, I felt depressed. Unfortunately, couldn’t tolerate a higher dose. But if you really need to shut off the noise, this may be the way to go. Best of luck."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I started taking clomipramine around 3 weeks ago and have noticed some improvements with my OCD and panic symptoms. I was dissociating and having frequent panic attacks along with obsessive compulsive thoughts and compulsions severely. The first week taking this, I noticed I no longer was having panic attacks, and my depression also improved. By week two, I noticed my OCD symptoms lessened maybe by 50%. (Btw, I am taking 25 mg daily alongside 10 mg of Lexapro.) I like this combo so far, although I am experiencing so many side effects. Every time I stand up, I get extremely dizzy to the point of where I feel like I might faint (I don't know what is causing this), I also am having difficulty peeing, as well as trouble reaching orgasm. Despite the side effects, it is improving my symptoms!"
