For Panic Disorder "I am leaving this here for anyone who has been prescribed clomipramine for anxiety. Please give this drug a good try. It really works! I am only on 50mg and it helps calm down my obsessive thoughts. It also improves my mood. I take it alongside 20mg of escitalopram and the two work well together! If you have tried pregabalin for anxiety and can't tolerate it then ask your doctor if you can try clomipramine for anxiety. When I first started it I suffered from mild insomnia but now I am fine! I do have a dry mouth but other than that I have no other side effects. I take one pill at night. Please also invest in seeing a psychiatrist if you are suffering from crippling anxiety. Being treated properly can be life changing! Good luck everyone."

Clomipramine "This med saved my life about anxiety and panic disorder. Nothing else worked for me. For OCD, it starts to kick in after 100 mg. Don't lose hope."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I've both ADHD and OCD. I've tried fluoxetine and sertraline before, but they were not as effective as this medication. It also helped me to fall asleep without having to use other drugs. To end the intrusive thoughts problem, I had to complement the treatment with 150 mg of bupropion for the ADHD."

Clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "After two failed SSRIs (Lexapro and Zoloft), I'm so happy I tried Anafranil. This is the best medication, and I wish doctors would prescribe this before SSRIs. I had little to no side effects when I first started taking it. I take it at night because it does cause drowsiness. I've been taking it for 3 months but felt the effects after 2 weeks! I have little to no intrusive thoughts from my OCD. There may be some days where my anxiety is not its best, but they're manageable, and I have this medication to thank. Please give this a try! It's an old medication, but it's so worth it, especially if SSRIs are not working for you!"

For Panic Disorder "Was diagnosed with anxiety, IBS & panic disorder in 2012. Over the years I've tried SSRIs (Sertraline, Citalopram), SNRIs (Venlafaxine), beta-blockers (Propranolol), but this TCA is the one I keep returning to. Virtually eliminated my IBS, overthinking and panic attacks. I've returned to it a 3rd time, and although I'm not 100% cured, it still seems to be helping. The side effects are inconvenient but manageable. Expect constipation, delayed orgasm, dry mouth & postural hypotension. Possible indigestion / reflux, but this might just be me! They don't recommend combining with alcohol, but I've always managed to enjoy a few drinks without any negative effects. If you decide to give it a go, start low and slow (25mg) and work up as needed. 50mg seems to be the sweet spot for me, but there's plenty of wiggle room (up to 250mg). I hope they continue stocking it in the UK, for those of us that seem to respond better to these older drugs."

For Panic Disorder "I had been put on 8 different antidepressants before Clomipramine - SSRIs, SNRIs, Atypical, you name it. I have severe Panic disorder (non-agoraphobic) and physical symptoms of panic that have such intensity I could hardly function - dizziness, nausea, and depersonalization being some of the worst. It got so bad I developed depression on top of Panic disorder. I also have some OCD and PMDD. This medication has me virtually symptom-free of OCD and PMDD and with very low panic symptoms. It’s worth a try if nothing has worked for you."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "Just like the majority of the people here, clomipramine has saved my life. I've had OCD since I left the womb, but one summer my cortisol levels rose so high that my body thought I was having a panic attack 24/7 for 3 months. I couldn't work, I could hardly eat, I cried for hours thinking terrible thoughts. One week on clomipramine... what thoughts? It has reduced my intrusive thoughts to a minimum, and when I do have them, they don't send me into a panic. It's just a fleeting thought that's gone as soon as it started. Try it. Try it. Try it. Give yourself the opportunity to feel well again."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "It's helping me in a lot of little ways, and as time goes on, I see how it's helping me in bigger ways too. I can't do anything unless it's perfect, so I usually end up doing nothing. But this medication is helping me take baby steps."

Clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "This medicine has been a game changer for me. I have struggled with OCD, panic, and anxiety all my life. This is the medicine that finally did the trick. My OCD is probably 95 percent better. It also has helped my panic attacks! Like other reviews state, it took about 4 weeks to work!"

For Panic Disorder "Had life debilitating panic attacks after my mum died. I couldn’t work or socialize and felt like I was dying too, it was so awful. After a couple of weeks on this drug, I started to get my life back, and now, 4 months in, I feel so good. Only wish I’d been prescribed this years ago, as OCD has affected me all my life. Side effects? A few (tiredness, hot sweats, and a dry mouth - but only in the first few weeks, now all gone). Honestly, this drug has been a lifesaver."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I am just beginning clomipramine on 25 mg for acute and severe anxiety and OCD fear thoughts every second of the day. I have tried lots of SSRIs with no success. Does anyone have any good experiences of this drug, particularly calming down intrusive extreme thoughts and anxiety?"

"I have PTSD, and this medication is a miracle for intrusive thoughts that plagued me 24/7 and caused horrible nightmares. At only 25 mg, it knocked out the thoughts almost immediately and gave me my life back. From the first day I started taking it, the thoughts began to retreat and were gone within days. It also did wonders for my anxiety. I was able to get off benzos, which I had assumed I would need for life. Initially, it was activating and negatively affected my sleep and appetite, but those side effects resolved rather quickly."

Clomipramine "Being on SSRIs since my first panic attack at 21 years old, having them recurring every 4 years or so (I am now 43), and while in a very severe and desperate episode, my psychiatrist asked me to give Anafranil a try. I was scared of tricyclics, as they have a bad reputation for side effects. The first dose had tough side effects that lasted for 2 hours. I was lucky I wasn't alone to face it. After that, kind of like a miracle, calmness took me by the hand. It's been 4 days and I've had a full night of sleep, something that hadn't happened in quite a while. I also suffer from nervous gastritis since the pandemic, and I'm slowly starting to eat things other than pasta and bananas with no disturbance. Reading other reviews and accessing my very recent experience, I can only say that I have faith to get my life back on track. Don't give up on yourselves, and if your doctor has prescribed it to you, give it a try - for me, it has been worth it, and things are looking up."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "This medication saved my life. I was dealing with intrusive thoughts every moment of my waking day, as well as horrible nightmares. From the first dose, I got some relief, and now the thoughts are gone entirely. It made me groggy at first and led to some insomnia, but it's gotten better. Sexual dysfunction, though, but having my mind back is the most important thing to me."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "During one of the lockdowns we went through, I found I couldn’t return to my flat, I had convinced myself that something terrible was going to happen. The obsessive, intrusive thoughts were debilitating. I assumed I would have to kill myself to make it stop. I was placed on clomipramine, and initially, the side effects were annoying but did eventually wear off. It has got me to a place in which I can actually function. I’ve been on it for several years now and am so grateful to the doctor that placed me on it."

Clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "So far, I have been on 25 mg for about 2 weeks. It has given me much more headspace than other antidepressants I've tried so far. Sometimes I can now redirect my attention and not fixate on the thoughts. Obsessive thoughts do still come, though, but I need to put in the work in ERP anyways. I am having good hopes for increasing the dose now. The only issue is it makes me really constipated right now. But compared to every other antidepressant, I believe this is one of the best for OCD."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "My OCD started when I was 30. I took escitalopram for 5 years, in varying doses from 10 mg to 30 mg, also in combination with antipsychotics. It helped alleviate the worst of the anxiety, but my intrusions never went away, and I retained a lot of anxiety. In the end, after 5 years, I switched to clomipramine, which worked much better for me. I would recommend switching earlier to try other drugs to find one that works well for you. For me, the clomipramine worked on a low dose (2x25 mg daily), but I believe that is uncommon. In terms of side effects, I notice a bit of weight increase and everything sexually is a bit less (libido, erections, orgasms). For weight issues, if lifestyle interventions (sports, eating healthier) don't work, I would advise speaking to an MD. For the second, look into buspirone/bupropion (for libido), sildenafil (for erections), and bethanechol chloride (orgasms)."

Clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "Anafranil gave me very serious balance problems. Within days of it for OCD, I began stumbling up the subway steps. The psychiatrist assured me it could not be from the Anafranil. Over a period of a few years, I twice fell and had to be treated and received facial stitches in the emergency room, lost part of a front tooth, suddenly fell for no apparent reason walking down the street, climbing stairs, going down stairs. I could have had extreme injuries, or in the case of falling down 15 steps at the train station, died. I asked my psychiatrist about Anafranil causing the falls. He said it would not in any way have caused these falls. On reporting my falling to an audiologist, she told me that research shows that Anafranil indeed does lead to balance problems in 30% of people taking it."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I was on Paxil for a decade, and it slowly started losing its effect. After suffering from panic attacks, I realized it had stopped working. From that moment, I tried everything, none of it worked. I tried mirtazapine, Wellbutrin, fluoxetine, citalopram, and pregabalin. You can imagine how I felt I would never feel okay ever again as each medication failed to work after months of trying. The doctors in the UK told me there was nothing else they could try, and I was in a very dark place. I contacted another doctor who said clomipramine was their last-ditch attempt at helping me (not a great way of saying it, but oh well). Within the first week, I felt like a new person. I actually feel quite emotional writing this. My panic attacks are gone, my racing thoughts and spiraling are basically over. I can just let them go, and that’s that! I used to not be able to be alone with my own thoughts because I would have a panic attack from them. Now I feel HAPPY and have ENERGY."

Clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "For those who are comparing OCD medications, you should note that Anafranil and Clomipramine are the same medication. Personally, I’ve found this medication to be the most effective for OCD, essentially removing all intrusive thoughts I had for the most part, as well as allowing me to easily dismiss or accept whatever intrusive thoughts did rarely arise, without it provoking an anxious response, meaning they could pass from my mind without issue. Unfortunately, however, the medication suddenly stopped working for me after a 3-year period and left me taking something much less effective. This has left me hoping that one day I’ll be able to go back on Clomipramine and that it’d work again, or that I could find another medication just as effective, if not more effective. It is an older medication, so it can have more side effects. Personally, I only had two: weight gain and orthostatic hypertension, however, the latter only appeared after a large dose increase much later."

Clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "This medication has helped me immensely with my OCD. It has been life-changing. The only side effect I would like to warn people about is, I take Anafranil at bedtime, I have hunger pangs all night, and although it helps me fall asleep, the hunger pangs wake me up at 1 and 2 am. It’s not a normal hunger either, it can’t be satisfied, and it makes me crave carbohydrates like pretzels, sweets, etc. I gained weight initially on it because I didn’t look into this side effect. I am now more mindful, I jog on the treadmill, and I try to watch my calories during the day and find snacks low in calories, so if you wake up hungry, you can eat and go back to sleep. The weight can come off, you just wanted to let people know. I find Zoloft helped my OCD just as much without the crazy hunger."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I have had severe OCD since childhood. Was finally diagnosed at 27 in 1989 and prescribed clomipramine. The side effects were awful but became less severe with time. The medication was extremely effective for my OCD and also helpful for my panic attacks. After 25 years, the medication, as the doctors say, 'pooped out.' It was devastating. I suppose I am writing to let people know that this can happen. To the extent that it is possible, one ought to have a back-up plan. I didn't, and a lot of suffering and dysfunction ensued. One day you feel well and functional and within 2 weeks you are trying to comprehend how your life could have taken such a turn. Just please beware - these medications often run their course, however long that might be, and then you're back to square one. Peace."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "My experience with this drug is a strange one. It almost completely stopped my obsessive thoughts, and I stopped caring so much as it numbed me. However, my trichotillomania symptoms got much worse. Also, I became obsessive in the cleaning and presentation way. If something wasn't sitting correctly or the wrong way around, I'd freak out and sort it until it was fine again. It felt very intense. This drug also made me incredibly tired and hungry all the time, which was an undesired effect. In the end, I gave up. The withdrawal was pretty intense too. I've managed to cope with my original symptoms thanks to psychotherapy."
