For Depression "This drug is very effective for depression and generalized anxiety disorder but has ruined my life. I took it for more than two years, at first, the only side effect was delayed ejaculation. After two years of use, I started experiencing low libido and severe erectile dysfunction. I stopped taking it, and 10 months later, I’m still completely impotent, like a 90-year-old man, it seems to be permanent."

Clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "My experience with Anafranil over the past 3 months is as follows: severely chronic constipation, urinary retention that hospitalized me the other day, a 60 percent increase in my depression, a 90 percent increase in my overall anxiety, and at best a 15 percent decrease in my OCD symptoms. Not to mention the sexual dysfunction that includes painful orgasms and low libido, and then there's the constant dry mouth. I cannot for the life of me recommend this medication to anyone. I'm currently 5 days away from discontinuing this medication and replacing it with Prozac."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "The medication is really helping my OCD, but I've been having some very scary, vivid dreams. Does anybody else experience it as well as I do? Please let me know, and if there's any medications that can help me with that. Thank you."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I've been taking 25 mg of clomipramine for six months. The first two months were rough. Constant dry mouth, fatigue, constipation, and brain fog. 25 mg was the highest I could go - any higher and the side effects were intolerable. That being said, by the sixth month, most of the side effects got better, but were not completely gone. My sleep and anxiety have improved greatly. My intrusive thoughts weren't gone, but I wasn't ruminating and obsessing like I used to. Overall, I was having a generally positive experience taking this drug. However, at the same time that I started taking clomipramine, I was diagnosed with lymphedema and gained weight in my legs that I can't lose. It's hard to know if this is tied to clomipramine because lymphedema is hereditary. The timing could be coincidental, but this medication is known for causing weight gain. So tomorrow I'm switching to Zoloft, which I took years ago. It's worth giving this med a try. Give it two months to really kick in."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "Clomipramine is a fantastic medication for OCD, and it quite frankly saved my life. My OCD, a year and a half ago, was so bad that I couldn’t function doing day-to-day tasks, even feeding myself was difficult! My intrusive thoughts (that I don’t particularly want to share) were probably 90% diminished. However, the sexual side effects have been horrible, which is why it’s not a 10/10. I have taken breaks with clomipramine, but it only ended in tears and relapse. I’m working very hard to treat my sexual side effects while maintaining this incredible treatment for OCD. If you’re struggling with any kind of OCD symptoms, I have no doubt that it will change your life. Great drug!"

Clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "This is the only medicine that ever did anything for my OCD. I have tried everything!! (Zoloft, Paxil, Luvox, Wellbutrin, Celexa, Prozac) It does have some side effects. The bothersome ones for me are weight gain (not extreme like 5-10 lbs) & fatigue. I recommend taking it at night before bed because it can make you tired. If your body can adapt to the side effects, it's worth it. Especially if you have intrusive thoughts. I have obsessive checking behaviors & I also pick my skin, which is considered the same type of disorder as trichotillomania. Anafranil helped me completely stop this. I had no desire to think about it or do it anymore, it was crazy. If you have tried a lot of other things, give it a try in low doses, slowly. It will get better, little by little."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I have been on Anafranil (50 mg) for a couple of weeks now for both OCD/OCP, intrusive thoughts, and intense irritability/anger. I have tried SSRIs and other medications, but nothing effectively dealt with the anger, a pretty severe side effect of my OCP. So far, Anafranil has been amazing. Within two weeks of starting, my anger has almost entirely gone away, and I find my obsessive/intrusive thoughts are also largely gone. I will be honest, when first starting Anafranil, the side effects were very apparent. I was shaky, had akathisia, insomnia, constipation, and my mood was initially very poor. However, after about a week or so, side effects began to lessen significantly. I am still struggling with some disrupted sleep and constipation, but my mood is significantly elevated, my anger is controlled, and altogether I am much more inclined to positive thinking. Optimal doses for OCD are really between 100-200 mg, so I am hoping to increase my dose as long as side effects are not an issue."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I feel it is so important for me to share my experience, as I was here a few months ago, obsessively reading the comment section, trying to work out what to do. After suffering from severe depression, almost daily panic attacks, and obsessive-compulsive disorder for the past 3 years, clomipramine has finally made me feel like myself again. I thought that I needed to work harder: exercise more, eat better, get enough sleep, etc. While those things are important, I could still barely function. I blamed myself for not improving. I tried sertraline only to have a severe reaction and was told to immediately discontinue. Taking clomipramine was terrifying, and yes, the first two weeks were a little unpleasant-dizziness, general malaise, and hot flashes. It was 100% worth it, however. The side effects have now faded, and I’ve noticed a very significant improvement. I’m only taking half a tablet."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I always swore I’d found a drug that helped me, that I would come back onto this site and post a review. After suffering from anxiety and depression for over 10 years, my diagnosis changed in the past 2 years, and I was crippled by pure OCD (obsessional thoughts but no compulsions). I tried Citalopram, Sertraline, Mirtazapine, and now Clomipramine. When I first tried this drug, I had no hope and couldn’t see a way out of the dark place I was in. I had no faith in therapy or drugs as both had failed. The initial week was tough - side effects included increased anxiety, jitteriness, nausea, etc. But I pushed through these, and within 2 to 3 weeks, I started to see light at the end of the tunnel. I’ve been on 100 mg now for 3 months, and this tablet has honestly saved my life. I was at a stage where I couldn’t do anything but think about my intrusive thoughts, and nothing brought me joy. My obsessional thoughts are now reduced by over 80%!!!"

Clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I’d love to know how anyone else went on this drug? I’m only on 25 mg and also on Concerta 18 mg for ADHD, so I’m basically OCD/ADHD. I have been getting really bad insomnia, but I do find it is helping. I take it in the morning at the moment because when I first started, I found it kept me up worse when I took it at night. I will eventually increase. I get dry mouth, but it has also fixed my IBS. Please feel free to share experiences if the insomnia side effect goes away. I’m on week two now."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "Suffering from pure harm OCD for 5 years now. No compulsions, just thoughts. It starts with the moment I wake up in the morning. Grueling and the most disgusting thoughts you can ever imagine, and an earworm that never stops and changes every day. No therapy has worked. After suffering for one year, I was at my wits' end. So my psychiatrist suggested we try Prozac with an optional conjunction with Abilify. I took it for two years, and it helped for about a 75% remission. Then it pooped out. My obsessions returned to full force, and for about 1.5 years, my suffering continued. I thought Clomipramine and maybe Abilify were my last hope. I started with 37.5 mg and upped my dose to 300 mg with 37.5 mg steps every week. Side effects: dry mouth, urine retention, severe constipation, tiredness, tremor in both hands, loss of libido, blurred vision, some of these disappeared, some didn't. Then I waited. After 7 long months and being on the max dose for over 4 months, I started to notice slight improvements."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "This medication is quite literally a lifesaver. I have had debilitating OCD along with bipolar and PTSD since childhood. I have also battled anorexia and exercise addiction for close to 50 years. I was on it for a couple of years about 6 months back, but my doctor took me off of it because it was making my manic episodes much worse. As soon as I went off of it, my obsessions and compulsions came back with a vengeance. She put me on Depakote to stabilize me, then put me back on the clomipramine last night. I could feel the difference as soon as I woke up this morning! I am (and was previously) only taking 12.5 mg, which did help tremendously. I'm hoping that, with the Depakote, I can make it to at least 25 mg to really get rid of it for good. I know that many of you are here because you aren't sure if you want to take the leap and, like me, you are probably obsessing about it. PLEASE push past your fears and give it a try! Dry mouth, sweating, and some mild tachycardia...that's it!"

Clomipramine for Depression "This drug made me feel worse than anything I have ever taken in my life! It did the opposite of everything it says it does. Any bad memory came straight to the front of my head and stuck there. The drug basically made me suicidal. If this drug works for you, more power to you, but I would be careful because this is what it did to me."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "This medication takes time to work. You need to be patient and give it maybe 3 months. Maybe more. It's given me my life back. From waking every day in terror, I now just wake up like a person without OCD. No SSRI drug has helped me. Clomipramine has removed the mild depression that I had for 2 years following an episode of clinical depression. It has taken away my constant anxiety and calmed my obsessions. I'll stay on it forever."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I'm deciding to comment. I've been on clomipramine 25 mg for a month, then went up to 50 mg for a week. This is in conjunction with 300 mg fluvoxamine (which I've been on for several months). I have to say that I was really sad when the meds didn't kick in right away. But since going up on the clomipramine, I have felt a big shift. My ruminations are just about gone, and I seem to have more control over my mind (so I'm at about 90% there). I'm thankful that the Lord led me to a very good physician's assistant who knew what she was doing. I've had OCD for as long as I can remember. Surprisingly, I never tried suicide, which is by God's grace. My OCD was over the top. But there is a huge light at the end of the tunnel. Don't give up. Some people get relief right away, and for some, like me, it takes a while to really kick in. Remember, these thoughts are not yours, even though they powerfully try to make themselves seem real and true, THEY ARE NOT! Press on, the best is yet to come."

For Panic Disorder "Anafranil is the drug that changed my life. The greatest invention of psychiatry. I was at the end of the road. Every second there was a state of panic. What I read before starting Anafranil terrified me so much. I didn't want to start, especially because of what I had read about Alzheimer's and dementia. But I hope whoever reads this review will take me seriously. This drug saved my life. Yes, the first month was very difficult because of the side effects, but now I feel like myself. I live an anxiety-free life. While 1 month ago it felt like I would never come out of this hole, now life gives me incredible pleasure. I'm taking 150mg a day and it's getting better every day. Please give Anafranil a chance. I thought there was no worse case in the world than me, I tried at least 10 different drug and none of them worked, I lost hope. So if I'm healed, I'm sure everyone can recover. Do not lose hope."

For Trichotillomania "I was put on 200 mg of Clomipramine (after trying a myriad of other medications for a myriad of diagnoses, including SAD, GAD, Major Depressive Disorder, OCD, and Bulimia). This medication was supposed to help with my OCD, but I didn’t notice much help there; however, a welcoming side effect is that it did effectively stop my excoriation disorder. I used to pick at my skin for 2-3 hours a day, and now I maybe pick it 2-3 hours a week. So I am staying on 100 mg of Clomipramine and starting Luvox or Fluvoxamine for OCD. Fingers crossed it helps."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I have done an extensive amount of research on the pathophysiology of OCD and what causes it. I have been suffering with harm OCD since I was around 11-12 years old. I have been put on fluoxetine for my OCD, panic disorder, and depression, it seemed to stop working for my OCD, but my depression and panic attacks are cured! I tried clomipramine, and it truly is a miracle drug, it completely cured my OCD. I am so thankful for modern medicine and the progress we are making in advancing mental health treatments."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "This is my second time being placed on this medication. Both instances were because I’ve asked for it. I’ve tried every single SSRI for OCD, and absolutely nothing comes close to Clomipramine. The first time I stopped because I could’ve sworn that it fired me. But my OCD would only strike again and leave me unable to function at all… I couldn’t eat, sleep, shower, get out of bed, or even talk to family on my birthday because of how depressed I was. After being placed back on this, it was only a matter of two weeks before I recognized myself in the mirror again. Life isn’t perfect, but the medication you want to become a better person is definitely Clomipramine. It was the literal answer to my prayers."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "Saris stopped working. I had up to 60 obsessions a day morphing. 1-hour toilet routine. I'd been using different SSRIs for 20 years with success for OCD, but for some reason, none of them worked anymore. I held no hope for clomipramine at all. I'm very sensitive to drugs, so they were increased very slowly. The worst side effect was dry mouth, it was like a rat had crawled in and died there, but it does pass and improve. Also, reading movement disorder as a side effect had me begin to be convinced I had one, but I didn't believe that until they were fully working. Anyway, slowly all my obsessions cleared up to the point where I can almost be the other way. I was considering many ways out of life before this started to show improvement. Now it is like I'm a slightly obsessive person with no OCD. It was a miracle for me. I was nearing the end, I had no quality of life. Give it a try."
