Benzonatate "I was prescribed these “cough pearls” for bronchitis, and my new doctor said to continue taking Robitussin DM along with the pearls every 6 hours. That was 3 weeks ago, and I’ve taken them religiously, but still coughing my head off. Last year, when I had bronchitis, I was prescribed cough medicine with hydrocodone, which helped immediately. I’m going back to the doctor and ask for the same cough medicine. I don’t think the cough pearls and Robitussin are very effective with my bronchitis."

"I was prescribed benzonatate 200 mg three times a day for cough after testing negative for COVID. I got my prescription in the evening, so I took it immediately, as prescribed, hoping that the cough would improve overnight so that I could at least sleep. Unfortunately, I coughed all night and throughout the following day. It didn't make me sleepy, and the cough became worse. I bought over-the-counter Robitussin, and it seemed to help better. I wish doctors would see the reviews on this medication and hopefully get a better option."

"I've been taking this for 5 days, and it hasn't helped to reduce or suppress my cough at all. Was diagnosed with bronchitis, and this did help to stop the chest pain from all the coughing, but I'm still miserable. No side effects from this medicine."

"As everyone else says, these do nothing. I've had both a doctor and now a nurse practitioner prescribe these and swear by them. Why can we not get codeine anymore? Something that actually works to stop a bad cough. I've thrown everything and the kitchen sink at my cough, and nothing calms it. It's affecting my sleep and keeping me in pain from the chest up through my head. Gah!"

"After having a cold for 3 weeks, received a prescription for benzonatate from urgent care for my cough. Coughing became significantly worse within an hour of taking a dose. Stayed with it for 2 days with no improvement. Missed a dose and felt better within a few hours. No more of this for me. At least Mucinex improved my symptoms."

"I was diagnosed with bronchitis and was prescribed a 100 mg dosage. At my pharmacist's suggestion, I started off by taking 200 mg. This medication had no effect on my cough whatsoever. I think it belongs in the placebo aisle. Robitussin with codeine actually works, but when I asked my doctor for it, he substituted this worthless concoction. When I got to the pharmacy, they were actually out of this junk and refused to call my physician and offer a substitute. Instead, they called pharmacies around town and sent me to a competitor to get this stuff. It appears the benzonatate sales force has a lock on both the doctors and pharmacists. I wish I had known how ineffective this stuff is on coughs before I went to the pharmacy."

Benzonatate "The best medicine I've taken for a cough. Told I found out that I have bronchitis. The coughing literally made my head and chest hurt. I took my first pill around 5 pm and stopped coughing minutes later. Just had my first cough, so it lasted from about 5:30 pm - 2:15 am. It's still not as bad as it was before 5. My biggest issue is the nightmares I just had. They were vivid and unlike any dream I've had before. It was promoted me to seek out experiences from others."

"Caused severe nasal congestion that made my cold symptoms much worse. My sinuses are now extremely swollen, I have fever and chills now, and earaches. The congestion and drainage have increased. My coughing to top that off!"

"Took this pill several years ago and glad I kept it. Has been my go-to cough relief RX. I have used it when I had bronchitic episodes and once it went into my ear. I had to get drops for ears for that. Anyway, whatever these pills are, I recommend them. Sure, I could get cough med with codeine, but this just works for me with less side effects. I actually have no side effects with this cough pill. For me, it was and still is a lifesaver as I must be able to function during the day. It did give me cough relief and, as I said, no side effects for me, and I tend to be very sensitive."

Benzonatate "Whenever I have a cough related to an upper respiratory infection, I ask my doctor for Tessalon Perles. Over the years, my family has had great success with this drug. It reduces coughing fairly fast for a pill and lasts much longer than OTC cough medicines. None of us has experienced any side effect when taking it."

"Had a persistent cough for 5+ days - traveling, allergies, etc. No fever, so antibiotics would have been useless. Doctor prescribed 100 mg pearls to take during the day and the syrup with codeine for the night. These worked amazingly. A couple of coughs here and there, but they really eliminated the urge to cough (something my usual mix of Delsym and Mucinex wasn't touching). One 100 mg pill did not make me drowsy at all, and I had no other side effects."

"I have had a tremendous hacking cough with walking pneumonia. At my one-week follow-up, a coughing jag in front of the doctor made him immediately prescribe this drug in the 200 mg dosage twice daily. I took it for the first time last night and felt a bit disoriented when it first kicked in. It kept me quiet for most of the night. No cough medicine is going to completely stop your coughing -- and I don't think you'd want it to. Having said that, I've gotten 8 hours of blessed relief and am grateful for this medicine."

"4 days I've been taking this medication, and it hasn't done anything whatsoever! I can't get any rest because I'm coughing my brains out. I'm coughing so hard that I'm throwing up. My head is pounding. I will stop this so-called 'cough suppressant' today and go to the store and buy me some over-the-counter Robitussin because that works better than this prescription I had to pay out of pocket for because my insurance didn't cover it. I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy to take this medication!"

Benzonatate "I had a bronchitis cough that left my entire body in pain. It seriously felt as though I had worked out and was dealing with residual body aches. When my doc realized the severity, he prescribed Tessalon. Initially, it felt like my cough was getting worse, but successive doses definitely helped to quiet me. This was far more effective than any narcotic-containing cough serum. It left me pretty sleepy, but I needed the rest anyway."

Benzonatate "Tessalon is the only thing that helps me when I get a really bad cough. I've tried everything else. With lupus and chronic infections/bronchitis, this medication has helped me very much. No one likes coughing. This medication worked for me when nothing, I mean NOTHING else did. Thank you to the makers of this drug! Kudos."

Benzonatate "As with most medication, there are limitations for which it works. I was prescribed this when I had pertussis (whooping cough), about 3 weeks in, and wish I'd had it sooner. If you've never had it, it's also known as the '100-day cough' and is absolutely the most horrible cough ever. It's nonproductive, just random deep coughing whenever it wants, for however long it wants, day or night. I had ruptured blood vessels in my eyes from coughing so hard. There is no treatment for pertussis other than antibiotics to make you not contagious. I'm struggling to imagine not having these while the disease ran its course. I'd give it 20 out of 10 if possible."

"Benzonatate is utterly useless. Did nothing to stop nagging, relentless dry cough as part of a bad cold. Used to be able to get Hycodan years ago from my doctor to stop a cough like this straight away. Now, everybody is so afraid to prescribe opioids that they let people suffer and hack, miss weeks of work, and tear up their lungs from 24 hours a day coughing. Benzonatate? What a joke. Bring on the codeine and the opiate cough medications. Those work. This does NOT."

"I am someone who very rarely gets sick. Two members of my family and I had this awful cough that has lasted for weeks and weeks and weeks, finally now resulting in about 5-8 coughing spasms per day, luckily sleeping fine though. I now have a cracked or bruised rib from these spasms. My doctor ordered this for me and I have taken 3 pills since yesterday. I have only had one coughing fit today, and even that one I almost felt I would be able to avoid. So far, I would say this medicine is a miracle. My doctor said I have to stop the coughing so the rib can heal. Looks like I am on the right track! I have recommended this to my father, who is also having the coughing spasms."

"I absolutely love this medicine. It works better than codeine for my cough, which I've had for over a week. After 2 doses, I was finally able to sleep and woke up completely recovered. My chest feels lighter!!"

"This medicine was helpful, however, after about three hours, it does wear off, and if you are miserable like I was, the dosage for this is too far apart. It is nice to get the relief for a few hours, but then the few in between the next dose is heck."

Benzonatate "Have had a chronic cough for 8 months. Would wake up every night after being asleep for 4 or 5 hours with a terrible hacking cough that would last for several minutes. At first, x-ray for any lung disease, then given medication by the doctor to treat possible GERD. No help. Then medication for asthma, no help. Then medication for allergies, no help. Then was given Benzonatate. Coughing stopped almost immediately. Have used it for over a month now and have only woken once with a cough, but it was not near as violent as my other coughing spells. Gentle cough and fell back asleep immediately. I've read some of these other reviews that it wasn't helpful, but for me, it was great."

Benzonatate "I can relate to the reviews 'I kept the house awake all night ... couldn't finish a sentence.' This medicine didn't seem to work for me either...for the first 4-5 days, then a tiny improvement each day. The coughs were completely unproductive until day 10 or 12. (productive = phlegm) Improvement was slight but still noticeable each day. Today is day 21 and I still cough a bit, lots of phlegm. I run out of medicine tomorrow and have notified the doc that I'm still coughing a bit (nothing like the cafeteria-clearing jags that had people fleeing for their health... 'He might be contagious!' I wish the doc had warned me that it might not seem to work for a while."

Benzonatate "I have been sick with a nasty cold for over a week. Worst symptom is a deep cough that has made my chest very sore. Urgent care prescribed Tessalon Perles. I used this medication several years ago, and it did nothing for my cough, and I had bad side effects (nausea). But I was desperate for relief, so I filled the prescription... I am so glad I did. I am finally getting some relief from the cough and no side effects this time!"
