Benzonatate "I think this is a good medication. It helps suppress my serious coughing attacks. I think it is best for coughs related to congestion and excess mucus in the head. It is not an expectorant. Therefore, it is likely to be less effective with coughs related to chest congestion and heavy phlegm in the throat and head. In some cases, it might be wise to take it with an expectorant. In my case, I have a lingering cough following a severe head cold. My doctor prescribed a steroid injection and the Perles to reduce lingering inflammation and the attendant cough. So far, it is working."

Benzonatate "I have had the Tessalon Perle prescribed for me twice now in the past 6 mos. Neither time has it worked for my cough. I have COPD and get bronchitis at least twice a year. This by itself will NOT treat bronchitis, you need an antibiotic. In the past, I've had a doctor at Urgent Care prescribe a cough syrup with codeine in it because my cough (especially at night when laying down) was so bad I wasn't sleeping, and abdominal muscles ached from coughing so much. That was a Godsend and is usually the only thing that helps with this type of cough. I have told my doctor to not waste time calling in a script for the Perle anymore. It's a waste of money."

Benzonatate "I was given this prescription due to a 3-week-long virus, excessive coughing-day and night. It does stop the cough, but I was allergic to it. I thought my lip blew up from the spicy chicken wings the night before. I kept taking it. It poisoned my system. I had no idea why my virus was now nauseating my stomach and twice I would vomit because of it. The side effects are obviously different on everyone! PLEASE read the labels and medical staff-PLEASE tell your patients that things can happen and they need to react to EVERY reaction that is NOT normal or feels good. My lip blew up. It looked like Botox. I drank all kinds of cold beverages to get the swelling down. I had NO idea the path it would take was to make me sicker."

"Benzonatate is not for every cough. Mainly if you suffer from a respiratory infection, it will do its job. Regarding a cold, forget it. It could even make your cough worse. Many have different effects from it like any other medicine. Benzonatate goes into effect immediately. So if you're taking it and see a decrease in your cough within 15-20 minutes, you're on the right track."

"I didn't have a runny nose or cough, which I told my doctor, just a very sore throat, ear pain, fatigue, and fever. He prescribed me the benzonatate caps 100 mg, and as directed, I took them, and 3 days later, still feel the same. No different. The pills have started to make me cough, but not bad. Sometimes after taking the pills, I fall asleep and wake up because I can't breathe. I don't feel it's helped me at all."

"This stuff is absolutely worthless. I’m shocked there are people who had it work for them, but the four times I’ve been prescribed this for coughs, it has helped my cough as well as eating a pebble. I’m still coughing so hard that I’m throwing up, and this crap does nothing to calm down my lungs or whatever crap it’s supposed to do. Luckily, you can take it with NyQuil, so I was able to get some sleep, but I’m so over doctors prescribing this crap. My doctor this time got me by calling it by Tussinex. Damn, she got me good."

Benzonatate "I just took a Tessalon for the first time, even if it will let me get 3 hrs of sleep tonight, I will be very happy. Nothing else seems to be working, and I have heard great reviews. I haven't coughed since I took one about a 1/2 hr ago, so goodnight."

"I would like to say this. I was on lisinopril prior to taking this, with the lisinopril causing the coughing episodes that I have had for the last 5 years. As anybody's experience is different, things besides just not working for you. What I have found my experience was very scary, as I felt this medication almost go through my body. I know that sounds kind of strange, but once it hit my shoulders and my neck and got into my head, my head felt like I was in a bubble underwater. Something, I just kept getting this pounding noise in my ear. I can feel my blood pressure starting to rise, my heart was palpitating like it was coming out of my chest. I did not have a blood pressure cuff, so I was unable to know what my readings were. I do know I am diabetic, and I will tell you that my checking my blood sugar shot up to 325 just 10 minutes after taking this pill."

Benzonatate "Started taking this after 3 weeks of coughing so intense that I would gag and gasp and have to run to the restroom to pee. Horrible. This was the only thing that lessened the coughing, but my doctor insisted I take it with a decongestant. I still cough, but it has been fewer and less intense."

Benzonatate "I was prescribed this for a consistent cough, which resulted in lots of mucus. It did not work. Finally, I decided to take 2. My cough stopped almost immediately - thankfully, NO mucus. Today, I have enjoyed my best day in months. I'm waiting 24 hours to take my dosage of 2 instead of one, as prescribed. This condition had become embarrassing and tiring. I became desperate."

"I purchased this medicine this morning at 7, however, due to side effect warnings, I waited until 3 pm to take it when someone would be home. It is working wonders. My cough has stopped. This was given to me for a cough due to bronchitis. I will keep this in my arsenal of medicines because it seems now that I am 60 years old, I have a cough most times I get sick. I am very satisfied with this and will recommend it to others."

Benzonatate "Had to go to urgent care because it felt like my entire esophagus was on fire. Turns out, I have pharyngitis caused by my terrible cough. The cough has kept me up all night for the past week. Dr. prescribed the Tessalon Perles and magic mouthwash. The magic mouthwash works wonderfully, but the Tessalon does not work well, it works for about 30 minutes, and I am right back to coughing. Called Dr. to see if there was something else he could prescribe. Hopefully, I can get a full night of sleep sometime soon."

Benzonatate "I have been very sick with the flu for 6 days and have coughed almost non-stop for the last 3. This medication does nothing for me at all. I was prescribed this a few years ago and got the same result. My eyes burn and my throat burns from the constant coughing. I wish I had been prescribed something that actually works."

Benzonatate "I was diagnosed last night with influenza and acute bronchitis. My coughing fits have been terrible and make me feel like I can't breathe. Once I start coughing, it's a long time and a severe headache before I can stop. The doctor prescribed Tessalon Perles for me, and I had no idea what it would do. This is the first time I have felt relief in many days! I feel its effect about 30 minutes after taking it... my cough becomes looser, my sinuses and airway become drier (not so full of mucus), and I lose the urge to cough. And I can sleep! Win."

"This has helped my cough from bronchitis a lot. I've only been taking it for two days with no side effects so far. My coughing went from hours day and night to very rarely. My dosage per pill is 200 mg, and I can take every eight hours if necessary. I cough somewhat more when I'm laying down but not enough to keep me up all night like it was. I think it's worth a try, but everyone is different and, as expected, results vary from person to person."

Benzonatate "Works like a charm. I take it only when I get an uncontrollable dry, heaving, gagging, sore ribs, diaphragm, forget about sleeping kind of cough if I have an URI, occurs about once every several years. If you're experiencing side effects, try taking the lowest dose possible and make sure you're hydrated."

"I have had the worst cough I have ever had in my whole life. My doctor prescribed benzonatate to me, and I thought it would really help. Unfortunately for me, it did not help at all. I really needed some relief to sleep, and it just did not help at all. Taking Mucinex helped more."

Benzonatate "I was really sick for a week and went in to see my doctor for a cough that was uncontrollable. He first prescribed amoxicillin. That did not help with my cough. Then I was prescribed Tessalon Perles, and it seemed to work. I was having itchiness all over my body, also welts. I then realized it was the Tessalon Perles that was doing it. I stopped taking them. Now I don't itch but still have a cough."

Benzonatate "I was prescribed these “cough pearls” for bronchitis, and my new doctor said to continue taking Robitussin DM along with the pearls every 6 hours. That was 3 weeks ago, and I’ve taken them religiously, but still coughing my head off. Last year, when I had bronchitis, I was prescribed cough medicine with hydrocodone, which helped immediately. I’m going back to the doctor and ask for the same cough medicine. I don’t think the cough pearls and Robitussin are very effective with my bronchitis."

"I was prescribed benzonatate 200 mg three times a day for cough after testing negative for COVID. I got my prescription in the evening, so I took it immediately, as prescribed, hoping that the cough would improve overnight so that I could at least sleep. Unfortunately, I coughed all night and throughout the following day. It didn't make me sleepy, and the cough became worse. I bought over-the-counter Robitussin, and it seemed to help better. I wish doctors would see the reviews on this medication and hopefully get a better option."
