For Birth Control "I got Kyleena placed on November 1, 2018. I had terrible, very intense cramping and prolonged bleeding but was told by my GYN to wait until my six-month mark and it would get better... ALL LIES. I now get very horrible, intense cramping before my period comes, and when my period comes, it stays on for 7-11 days, and it has never done that before. This birth control is a no for me, but it may not be the same experience for everyone. Going to have it removed next week and let my body regulate itself."

For Birth Control "Insertion and the following hour or so after, I experienced the worst pain I’ve ever felt. Mind you, I have six tattoos and have been pierced in different places. The doctor said it hurts less if you’ve had kids before (if you’re wondering). Most uncomfortable side effects, but probably worth it. Heavy, heavy bleeding the first couple of weeks and has died down, but from time to time I still get excruciating cramps. The doctor prescribed me a high dose of ibuprofen, which 100% helps. Would NOT get again or go through the insertion process ever again, in fact, I’m scared to get it removed if it’s going to feel the same way."

For Birth Control "I'm 26. Never had children. I've had Kyleena for 6 months now. The procedure to get Kyleena placed was easy and not painful. I took 800 mg of ibuprofen before my appointment and didn't feel anything except slight pressure. The day after insertion, I tried to work but ended up in tears because I was having stabbing cramps. The first 3-4 months, I pretty much bled constantly, but it was light. My cramps increased and would be so painful I would be toppled over crying in pain. I have had depression and anxiety that I never had before this. My sex drive has decreased, and my orgasms have become almost nonexistent."

For Birth Control "I highly recommend Kyleena for anyone who needs a form of birth control they do not need to think about. Not having to worry about taking a pill every day is a blessing, and the insertion process really was not bad at all. It was a very intense period cramp that lasted all of 30 seconds at most. After it was inserted, my pain immediately stopped. The cramps continued on and off over the next couple of days, but they were tolerable, and that was my only symptom after the procedure. I had spotting for 2 days, but then bleeding completely stopped, and I was back to normal. Of course, everyone’s body reacts differently, but I encourage everyone to not let the fear of pain stop you from considering Kyleena. I am very glad I got it."

For Birth Control "I have only had the Kyleena for almost 2 months. The insertion was horrible, it felt like my insides were being pinched and twisted for 5 minutes, and I cried. I haven’t done anything sexually with someone, so I can’t say if it’s effective, but ever since I’ve had it, I’ve been on my period, and it sucks. I have to wear panty liners because I never know how it’s gonna be. One day it’s spotting like it’s the end of a period and then the next it’s full-on red blood, and then the next I don’t bleed. It’s really annoying because even if I did want to have sex, I wouldn’t, because I don't want to have sex if I'm on my period."

For Birth Control "I had the Kyleena IUD for a total of 3 months, and it wrecked havoc with my body. Previously, I had the copper IUD for 6 years, but due to heavy periods caused by the copper IUD, I had it removed. Insertion of the Kyleena was actually fine and not so painful. Just a little pinch. But for the next 3 months, I suffered horrendous bloating. My weight has always remained the same, even after having two kids, but almost immediately, I started gaining weight. I eventually cut down to just one meal a day and gave up almost everything sweet to see if this would help, but I kept on gaining weight. I had a constant brown discharge every day for 3 months, but it was the bloating that affected me the most. I had it removed almost one week ago. I had heavy bleeding for 4 days after removal. The bleeding has now stopped today, and the bloating has already significantly reduced. Today is the first day after 3 months that I feel like myself again. Sadly, it didn’t work for me."

For Birth Control "During insertion, the speculum/measuring definitely felt like a mild cramp, but the actual insertion of the IUD was about a 6/10 on the pain scale (did not take painkillers). For the rest of the day, I felt moderate to severe cramps and bloating. I was also spotting. The spotting continued for about three to four weeks, improving in color and amount week by week. The cramping stopped after maybe 3-4 days, improving drastically each day. I am on my 3rd month of the Kyleena now, and everything has been great. I experience some bleeding sometimes during sex with my partner, and he can feel the strings of the Kyleena (though he says that it does not hurt him). Make sure to check if the strings are still in place at least once a month. My periods are gradually getting lighter, and the flow is so much better than it used to be (as someone who used to have quite severe periods). Cramps are very manageable and are usually only evident on Day 2 of my period."

For Birth Control "Insertion experience (will update over time). I took 2 extra-strength Motrin 30 min before my insertion. Was not prescribed any other medication, and my IUD was not inserted while I was on my period (I guess this varies by clinic). I have never been pregnant. I was expecting pain but just stayed completely relaxed and was pleasantly surprised that I hardly felt anything at all! Nothing more than the equivalent of a brief gas pain in my uterus and discomfort due to the speculum being in my vagina. I did notice that I was bleeding immediately after the procedure (due to period, not due to laceration), but my bleeding stopped completely after 3-4 hours. I had mild cramps for about 4 hours as well. Since then, it has been 4 days and I have not had any cramps or spotting/bleeding. I realize that it is too early to show any real effects, but I wanted to leave a positive review on here because I think that usually people with negative experiences are more inclined to comment."

For Birth Control "I had Kyleena inserted two months ago in December. I was on a couple different types of oral birth control before I decided to switch to the Kyleena. I was very nervous for the insertion, but it was really not too painful. It feels like a pap smear with two intense cramps about 10 seconds each (these cramps were no worse than really bad period cramps). I experienced some cramping the week after the insertion. Again, nothing worse than just bad period cramps. Ibuprofen usually did the trick, and I was able to carry on with my day. I would say that once I hit the two-week mark, I couldn't feel the IUD at all. No bloating, no cramping, no tenderness. My mood has been so much more stable than it was on the pill. Almost exactly a month after the insertion, I got my first period. This was like a regular period that I would have before I was on any type of birth control. Cramping, somewhat heavy bleeding, lasted six days, etc. I am so much happier on Kyleena than I was on the pill."

For Birth Control "I’ve had Kyleena for 1 year today. In the first 3 months, I gained 31 lbs, but I finally found a birth control that I loved, so I didn't really care about the weight gain. I had cystic acne all over my face, back, and butt. Then I got diagnosed with IBS-C and interstitial cystitis. I never had a prior issue with either of these things until after my IUD insertion. Ignored it because my sex drive was back, and I didn’t have a period (happy about these things). Then did some looking into it and truly realized how horrible hormonal birth control is for your body. Kyleena specifically is linked to miscarriages and the inability to get pregnant after removal. Not worth it anymore. Getting it taken out and switching to Paragard. As soon as I made the decision to switch (2 weeks before my 1 year mark), I started heavily bleeding. Haven’t stopped since. I’ve had a 2-week period after a year of no period. So bye-bye, Kyleena! You did your job, but not at the expense of my health and happiness."

"I got the Kyleena because I was tired of taking birth control daily for my PCOS. I got it put in mid-October; the insertion was extremely painful, but the pain only lasted a short time (completely gone after an hour). I bled daily until January, which sucked, but I was told my period would be irregular for up to 6 months. Now it is March, and I haven’t bled in 2 months. I also had some terrible acne pop up from mid-December to mid-February, but it is finally clearing up. No mood swings or any change like that. Overall, now that the acne and bleeding are gone, I am very happy with the Kyleena!"

For Birth Control "I'm 22, and I've had the Kyleena for almost 5 months now, and in general, I've been pretty happy with it. The insertion was painful, probably a 6 out of 10, but very brief. I did take 800 mg of ibuprofen about an hour beforehand on my doctor's recommendation, which I'm sure helped a bit. I had some cramping and bleeding over the next few days, but nothing very significant. In the following weeks, I kept waiting to get my period, but it never came. The doctor says it's completely normal, and although it might change further down the line, it's also possible I won't get any periods for as long as I have it in. For a few months, I had a fair amount of hormonal acne on my chin. I've been lucky to have fairly clear skin most of my life, and I'm very religious about my skincare routine, so the painful under-skin bumps I was getting were really frustrating. They seem to be clearing up now (fingers crossed), and the peace of mind Kyleena has brought me has been worth it overall."

For Birth Control "Had Kyleena put in about 5 weeks ago. The insertion was very bad for me. I was told all it would be was mild cramping, but I ended up passing out, throwing up (I almost backed out in the middle of the procedure), and had to stay in the room for 30 minutes. They really don’t warn you… I had rough cramps for 7 days straight, and since then, I have not stopped bleeding. The last week, I have been feeling very depressed, which is extremely unlike me, and have absolutely no sex drive. I also have been breaking out, which I normally don’t. I’m personally not willing to wait for 'my body to adjust' - I don’t care, it’s not worth feeling like absolute garbage physically and mentally all the time. I’m getting mine removed ASAP (which I’m also so incredibly scared to do now, by the way). If my personal friends and family asked if I would recommend it, I would tell them to stay far away from it."

For Birth Control "Got it beginning of August. Been spotting/on my period for a month now... love that I can't get pregnant. Praying I stop bleeding. One thing that has been a lifesaver is period underwear because I'm so tired of tampons and pads. Basically just sleep in them and wash them, and they're the best. Yeah. Kyleena is great, but I'm still bleeding."

For Birth Control "Insertion for me was awful. I have a very high pain tolerance, but this was by far the worst. There was quite a bit of difficulty with the insertion (I am 36, no children), another doctor had to be called in and an ultrasound done in order to get it in. Bleeding after was heavy and lasted about 3 weeks. I have had moderately heavy, long-lasting periods ever since. My biggest complaint is that my skin and hair are super oily now. I can wash my face and 10 minutes later it is just as oily as before. I used to be able to wash my hair every 3 days, but it needs it daily now and I just cannot do that. I have also started to break out badly on my chest and the back of my neck. I may have it removed if things don't improve soon."

For Birth Control "It's been almost a full 24 hours since I got my Kyleena inserted, and I have to say it hasn't been that bad at all. I am 24 years old, have one little boy who I had almost 2 years ago (naturally). The initial insertion hurt for about 5 minutes. After that, it was just like regular period cramps. I've had some bleeding, but nothing too crazy. I made sure to stay laid down for a few minutes. After laying there for about 5 or 6 minutes, I got up and felt fine. Walked to my car, drove about halfway home. After getting off the highway, I started feeling hot, sweaty, and lightheaded, so I pulled over in a parking lot. The cramps were pretty bad by then. But I made it home! Will update later!!"

For Birth Control "I got my Kyleena on August 4th, and so far, my experience has been great. I had been on the pill and the bar that's been in your arm for birth control, and so far, this is by far my favorite. Insertion was very painful for me, but I've never had a pap smear or anything similar to what getting an IUD is like. I had super bad cramps for about 3-4 hours and some light bleeding. My doctor gave me 4 ibuprofen to take after the insertion and said to take 2 extra strength Tylenol once I got home. After I took the two Tylenol and napped, I felt a ton better and only had light cramps. On the second day, I barely spotted and had minimal cramping, and today, I have no spotting/bleeding and no cramps. All in all, the pain was worth it, and I'm SO happy I got the Kyleena."

For Birth Control "I've been using Kyleena for about six weeks, and so far, it's been a nightmare. Aside from bleeding almost every day, I have been experiencing the worst pain I've ever had in my life. Sudden, sharp, stabbing pelvic pain that comes and goes every day. I went to the doctor last Friday, and she found out a big cyst developed in my right ovary. The IUD is properly placed, so that's not the problem. She prescribed me oral contraceptives and a soy supplement. If the cyst doesn't decrease in size, I'll have the IUD removed. I can't stand the pain, and I know I'll lose the money, but I can't live like this. Hope this helps in case you are considering the Kyleena IUD. Good luck."

For Birth Control "I got my Kyleena put in September 12th of this year, and I love it!! The insertion was what I had read about, it was a really strong period cramp. I bled for about 3-4 days and had slight cramping, but now I spot every here or there and don't really have cramps anymore. So far, this has been the best decision."

For Birth Control "Post insertion, I remember laying in the fetal position under a chair at home for hours, the pain was so bad. I continued to get irregular periods that would last well over a week. I ended up getting this removed after 4 years because I had periods that would last 3 or more weeks, with maybe 2 weeks without a period in between. I would bleed after and sometimes even during sex for about 3 years. At least I didn't get pregnant or have to remember to take a pill..."

For Birth Control "I got my Kyleena put in about three years ago. I will be honest-getting it put in hurt for a couple of minutes. I did cramp for the rest of the day, but it wasn’t too painful after the insertion. For the next couple of months, I had a lot of spotting. I did end up with BV, which I think was due to having small amounts of blood changing my pH balance. It took a while (boric acid suppositories and probiotics helped) to get my pH back in check. Now I wear an absorbent panty liner or a light tampon 1-3 days a month, and that’s about it. I still do get some mood swings, but don’t have all the issues I had before, including heavy bleeding (requiring both pads and super plus tampons) for up to 2 weeks a month and terrible PMS issues. I am very pleased with my IUD-it did take me 6 months or so for things to even out, but overall, I think it is great!"

For Birth Control "The insertion was not bad at all! It was a 2/10 for pain at the most, getting my ears pierced hurt more! I had an excellent doctor do the insertion, though. I also took a Flexeril and 800 mg of ibuprofen about an hour before the procedure. Definitely have bleeding, but I was able to sit up and go home after. I had my BF there to hold my hand and drive me home. But feeling good! Hopefully, over the next few months, things will stay good! Be ready to give a urine sample before! (To check for pregnancy)"

For Birth Control "I got my Kyleena put in on July 25th. Right now, things are rough. I got mine inserted on the 2nd day of my period, which I highly recommend. I honestly can't even say insertion was painful, but it was probably the most discomfort I've experienced (30 sec only!). I took 600 mg of ibuprofen before, which helped the cramping after-was able to go back to work just fine. My period is now over, but the spotting has not stopped; it's been about 2 or 3 weeks. I had sex day 8, which burned slightly after. Had sex again more recently and started bleeding profusely with cramps. Called emergency doc and scheduled check-up. I will check in after 2 months; hopefully, it'll get better!!"
