For Birth Control "So I've tried just about every type of contraceptive. I tried to take the pill but lost my pack within a week and a half of using it (oops!), in which case I decided I needed to try some more permanent options. First I tried Nexplanon, but I bled every day from two months after getting it to when I got it taken out. Next I tried NuvaRing, which made me extremely irritable and angry all the time. I turned to IUDs because I felt like it was my best option. I've been using Kyleena for about three months and it has been great. I have next to no symptoms, my period is more like spotting, and I haven't seen any of the negative side effects I had with the other birth control options."

For Birth Control "So I posted a review about the Kyleena a little while ago, shortly after my insertion. Things were okay, I was a little crampy, and I spotted a bit, but things were okay. Then I got my first period on Kyleena. I ended up in the hospital not once, or twice, but 8 times in the course of about 2 weeks due to severe pain. I was told no cysts had burst, and the IUD was in the right place. No pain medication or management offered, just some unhelpful and disappointing news. Now I've had Kyleena for about 6 weeks, and I'm getting it removed in 3 days. I'm in pain 24/7, bleeding and spotting off and on, my antidepressants aren't as effective lately, and I'm losing sleep mostly due to pain. I can't do anything without triggering cramps, and if I breathe weird when I do sleep, I wake up with a searing pain in my cervix. The only positive thing I can say about Kyleena is that it's great at being a contraceptive because I'm too miserable to want to have sex."

For Birth Control "This is my 1 year, 10 month check-in. The first 90 days were crap because of the bleeding, but eventually, it was fine. I NEVER get a period. I have had cysts, but they come and go and are only briefly present. Compared to period cramps, they’re a breath of fresh air. If you are experiencing cysts and find it hard to cope, I recommend taking a birth control pill as well, because it will stop them. Every now and then, I do experience minor cramps in my uterus, but I think it’s because I’m supposed to be starting my period. I do not recommend reading a review that is less than six months, because yes, it does sound scary, but some people cannot handle it, and that’s okay. You shouldn’t let the rougher months scare you. In the long run, I never have to worry about my period for the next five years. I don’t bloat. After insertion, go home and rest."

For Birth Control "I got the Kyleena fitted almost 6 weeks ago. I went under to have it inserted because I had a few other things to be done at the same time. The worst part was recovering from the anesthetic, it made me sick and very tired. I then had cramping for about 5 days afterwards, on and off. Ibuprofen helped it. I bled/spotted for the first week, then it stopped until my next period. I got my period when it was due, it lasted a few days longer than usual (about 8/9 days instead of about 5-6 days), a little bit of cramping, but I didn't need pain relievers for it. The worst side effect I had was acne in the first few weeks following. I now still have a bit, but nothing too worrying. This is an awesome option, I hope it stays like this for me! I was expecting to deal with so much worse for the first few months."

For Birth Control "I have been on the Kyleena for about 10 months. Insertion was painful but not bad. I bled for about three months after. I used to get few and infrequent pimples, but now my acne has been terrible. I also have experienced mood swings and pretty intense depression. I am thinking about getting it removed as I come up to the 1-year mark because it's honestly not worth feeling terrible. Great that I don't have to worry about becoming pregnant, but I think I'd prefer something else."

For Birth Control "For all of the girls that are sensitive to pain, I would HIGHLY encourage you to ask your provider to knock you out for the procedure or give you a lidocaine injection in your cervix. Getting the device implanted was the most painful experience of my life, and I have broken multiple bones in my body. My OBGYN recommended this IUD as a treatment for ovarian cysts, and for a while, it did help with some of the cramping. I had the Kyleena in for over one year and recently had it removed due to pain during sex and bleeding after sex, which began about 6 months after getting it inserted. Overall, I really liked this IUD. I didn’t gain any weight and didn’t experience any increase in acne (although it didn’t improve either). I got it removed because it absolutely ruined my sex drive and made me hesitant to be intimate with my husband due to fear of the pain and bleeding after sex."

For Birth Control "The 1st week following Kyleena, I had bad cramps and had to take a hot water bottle to work/take painkillers. Then the pain subsided, and I stopped bleeding for a week. However, at the end of the 2nd week of Kyleena, I have started bleeding with SEVERE cramps; it felt like my cervix was spasming, which was coming and going in waves. I am used to severe period pains, but this was a different type of pain; like a pulling/nerve/spasm pain, which was unbearable. The bleeding lasted almost 2 weeks, and yesterday I had to go to A&E to have this removed. I would say, however, that I have always suffered from very bad period pains, and having spoken to the doctor when getting this removed, she mentioned that if you are going on the coil to reduce pain, then Kyleena is not the one for you. I have also heard great case studies from friends that it has worked well with, so I really think it is completely based on your body as an individual. It simply didn't work for me."

For Birth Control "I have Kyleena for a year now. I had it inserted a month after my second child was born and had no problem with the procedure. I chose Kyleena over Mirena because it has fewer hormones and you’re supposed to still have your period, what I thought to be closer to a natural thing. I bled and had light pelvic discomfort for three months. After that, I had irregular bleeding and spotting every single month. In one particular month, I bled so much I had to change pads every two hours, and the following two months after that, I had cramps and spots, but no real blood, which made me resort to a pregnancy test. I have also experienced very high levels of anxiety and some weight gain, discharges with a strong smell, cramping, and some acne. I really want it removed but need to decide the next form of birth control first."

For Birth Control "I got Kyleena inserted about 3 months ago, and honestly, it was the best decision I made for myself. I have kind of abnormal anatomy (large and antiverted uterus), and it did take my OB/GYN a couple extra minutes than usual to get it in the perfect place. I had little pain during insertion, which was like two intense cramps lasting 30 seconds, and I was fine within 5 minutes and walked home from the clinic with no pain or bleeding. My period came on schedule, but I did experience more intense cramping and heavy bleeding for two weeks, followed by spotting for 3 weeks, and then it stopped completely. I haven’t had a period since, and I am not pregnant. No cramping, no hormonal acne, no effect on my mood or weight, no effect on libido (just as high as it was before insertion), and no problems. It works great for me so far, better than the pill personally."

For Birth Control "I got my Kyleena IUD two months after giving birth to my son. The insertion was relatively painless, and I only experienced cramping for about two days and bleeding for three. However, a month later, I got my period, which lasted for an entire six weeks. It stopped for two weeks, but now I've been experiencing endless spotting for the past month. I've been extremely angry over small things and cried all the time. My anxiety has gotten so bad that I can barely go to work, and I experience random cramps and back pain throughout the day. I can't function normally anymore, and I want it out so badly, but I lost my health insurance, so I'm stuck. It's made me feel crazy, which is not who I am. I never used to cry or get upset over anything. It has taken a toll on my boyfriend, my friends, and my life in general. I am absolutely miserable, and I do not recommend it at all."

For Birth Control "Got Mirena once I turned 18. Was the most painful and sickening experience of my life. Never went back to follow up with the doctor. After 3 months of bleeding and pain, everything cleared up and I almost never got my period until after the 5-year mark. Getting a new IUD, I was so scared of the pain that the doctor suggested Kyleena because it was smaller. Insertion was uncomfortable and I had mild cramping. It's been over 2 years and I get a regular period. My cramps have all of a sudden gotten so out of hand I get sick and it’s painful. I've had terrible acne (it gets painful at times) since I've been on Kyleena, which I never had to deal with before this and I'm 25 years old. I plan on getting it removed, but I was told the strings are now missing. Also, after the first year, after having sex regularly, I would bleed uncontrollably afterward. I'm not sure if it was due to the strings being pushed back or what, but it was a complete nightmare and still is. I'm so sick of birth control and stressing over IUDs."

For Birth Control "I had the Kyleena inserted two days ago, and it was a much better experience than what I had worried about. The doctor injected some local anesthetic into my cervix first, I was afraid this would be agony, but I didn't even feel the needle, just the fluid being pushed in, which was only a bit uncomfortable. Next, she measured the depth of my uterus with a small instrument, this felt very strange but not painful. Finally, she inserted the Kyleena itself, this was a very sharp pain, about an 8 out of 10, but it only lasted less than a minute. Immediately afterward, I had cramping like normal period pain, this lasted four or five hours, but I was at work and doing normal things the rest of the day. I didn't take any painkillers for it. Had some light bleeding the rest of the day. Yesterday and today, I have had no pain or other symptoms at all. Overall, an unpleasant 5 minutes, totally worth it for 5 years of contraception!"

For Birth Control "I've had this for over two months now, and I've had about a regular tampon's worth of bleeding every day. For two months. I'm pretty annoyed as I switched from the copper IUD to the Kyleena precisely to not have my period. Will give it one more month and then may remove. Anyone else have a similar experience and can make me feel better?"

For Birth Control "I’ve had Kyleena about 1 year. Insertion wasn’t bad for me, but I tolerate pain well after having kids. The first few months were rough-cramps, nonstop bleeding, bad hormonal acne, mood swings, etc. I combated these symptoms with Midol, my favorite face mask, herbal tea, and heating pads. I am so glad I stuck it out because my body must have acclimated, and I haven’t had any issues for the last 9 months. No more acne, zero spotting or bleeding, and my horrible periods and cramps completely gone. 3 months of torture traded for almost 5 years of not having to worry about anything, worth it to me. I have noticed that this makes me hungrier, so I’ve had to be cognizant of that to avoid weight gain. I drink herbal tea to quell the hunger. Haven’t gained any weight though. After insurance, I only paid $7. Couldn’t be happier with Kyleena."

For Birth Control "I regret this so much that I'm getting it taken out in a few days. Got it in 7 weeks postpartum. Hurt a lot, I bled after for weeks and weeks, actually more so than after I had my daughter. Also, with no change in my eating habits, I actually weigh 20 pounds more than I did full-term pregnant. I've been doing an hour of cardio plus walking 15,000 steps a day and no change. Also, my anxiety has been through the roof to the point where I've had to get on Zoloft to somewhat control it. That being said, this is a different experience for everyone and works for a lot of people, but if you have had issues with weight or your mental health, proceed with caution when getting this or other hormonal IUD."

For Birth Control "I had the Kyleena put in yesterday morning, and the insertion experience was fine. Only felt minor discomfort when it went into my uterus (maybe made 2 sharp inhales, that's all). I didn't feel the tenaculum being clamped onto my cervix at all (the doctor warned me I'd feel a pinch). The doctor I had was great and had tons of experience with IUDs. This is what I did before my appointment: inserted two 200 mcg misoprostol tablets ~3.5 hrs prior (doctor prescribed), took 2 'ratio-LENOLTEC No. 1' tablets ~1 hr prior (also called Tylenol 1s; not prescription, but are behind the counter at the pharmacy), and had a good breakfast ~1.5 hrs prior (oatmeal, banana, orange). After my appointment, I relaxed for the rest of the day. I had minor bleeding (pantyliner ok) and dull ache cramping (nothing sharp). I took 2 more Tylenol 1s in the afternoon and used a heating pad on my abdomen. If I had to, I could've gone back to work after. I am in my mid-40s and have had no kids. I hope your insertion experience is just as easy as mine was!"

For Birth Control "I’ve heard a lot of people are offered a cervix softener before insertion— I was not given anything to prepare me. Getting the IUD put in hurt a lot, and the insane cramps continued steadily for about a week. I am constantly bleeding (which isn’t great for me, I’m very anemic), and I can feel my IUD whenever I lay on my side. I brought both of these things up to my doctor at my follow-up appointment, and she told me to just wait out the bleeding. The pain while laying on my side was never addressed. She just said, “That’s weird.” Yeah, thanks! It’s hard to tell if I’m still getting a period because I’ve been bleeding so much every day. It’s more than spotting. It’s making me feel so gross that I never want to have sex anymore. I’m 4 months in, and I’m considering getting it taken out and getting a partial hysterectomy. I’m extremely depressed."

For Birth Control "I just got Kyleena put in yesterday. When I talked to my doctor about getting Skyla, he suggested I get Kyleena instead because he had stopped carrying Skyla and Kyleena lasts two years longer than Skyla. When I had it inserted, the pain was like a bad cramp, but I've experienced worse. And after that, I was fine and able to get on with the rest of my day. I did have a little bleeding and cramping, but now it's the second day and I am not experiencing either symptom. So far, so good!"

For Birth Control "I've had the Kyleena for 5 months so far. The actual insertion was not bad since I took ibuprofen and medicine to soften the cervix prior to it. The cramps, however, afterwards were the worst I've had in life! And they were on and off for like a month. I also went into a deep depression for a whole month, where I had to motivate myself to literally do everything, even just to take a shower. The depression went away after a month, but still comes back on and off randomly. My cycles have also been a full 10 days each month, and sometimes afterwards, I will start randomly bleeding again for like 5 days in addition. It's normal bleeding and not heavy, but still annoying AF. Every time I've tried to have sex, I have bled, even though I wasn't on my cycle at the time, which is gross and super embarrassing. I have been trying to give it time to adjust to my body, but between the depression and bleeding, I can't take it! This is no way to live. I am getting it taken out as soon as possible!!!"

For Birth Control "I got my Kyleena IUD inserted this morning. I was so scared because of all the horror stories I've heard. But honestly, my experience has been great so far. When I got it inserted, I didn't even feel it. The doctor said he was done, and I was so shocked. It was also my first pap test, and when he opened my cervix, there was a little discomfort, but other than that, there was no pain whatsoever. I was able to continue the rest of my day completely fine. I've had no cramping at all and just some light bleeding, but that was expected."

For Birth Control "Got the Kyleena inserted almost four months ago. Doctor recommended it because I have PCOS and I also get migraines. Since this is estrogen-free, I guess it was the best choice. Insertion wasn't terrible, it was painful. I took ibuprofen beforehand, and it didn't help at all. I agree with the comment that it feels like a knitting needle being jammed up there. I had bad cramping the day of insertion and the next day, after that, nothing. The biggest side effect is I have bled every single day. I have not had a single day since insertion that I haven't bled. Doctor said it's normal, but I don't know how much longer I can take this before I get it removed. As of right now, I don't think I would recommend this to anyone."

For Birth Control "20, no kids. 4 months in, and I ♡ my IUD. Insertion took about 15 min and was uncomfortable, but no worse than a pap smear. The only thing that hurt was when the OB injected the numbing agent. I went back to work afterwards. About 30 min later, I felt bloating but didn't need Tylenol. The bloating stopped after ~4 days, all of which I worked/went to the gym just fine. I spotted for 2 months. The 1st period I had was late and crampy, the 2nd I almost didn't notice. Months 3 and 4, no spotting/periods/cramping. Dream come true. My OB tucked the string up around my uterus so partners can't feel it. Even I have to search to find it, softened now by mucus. I bled after sex at first, but now I can have intercourse without bleeding. It didn't harm my libido or cause weight gain. Now that my periods stopped, there's virtually no acne or depression, which I usually had on my period. You aren't going to know how your body reacts until you try."

For Birth Control "I am 20 years old, never been pregnant. Insertion of Kyleena was painful but bearable, however, the horrible cramping started immediately after. I thought I was going to pass out in the doctor's office. I was supposed to go to class later but ended up sitting in a coffee shop, unable to move for 5 or so hours, as I could not even walk from the pain and couldn't drive myself home. Extremely heavy bleeding immediately after that lasted about 10 days. The main issue is that the cramps have not let up. Never in my life have I experienced cramps like this. It feels like a sharp, stabbing pain on one side that radiates down my thigh, to my back, and the other side of my stomach. When they first started getting really bad a week after insertion, I thought my uterus had perforated and was getting ready to go to the ER, the pain was so bad. Apparently, these are normal according to the doctor and will go away. However, I have had it for 5 months now, and they have not let up yet, happening almost every day still."

For Birth Control "I have been on birth control pills all of my teen years until now (12 years). I have decided to switch it up about a month ago. I’ve now had Kyleena for about two weeks. My light bleeding has stopped, and I feel great. My doctor had me insert the medicine beforehand to soften my cervix and had me take 800 mg ibuprofen an hour before the procedure. Placing the Kyleena was a lot better than I imagined. I, personally, didn’t have any pain afterward. Now, my mood is a lot more stable, my libido is coming back, my skin looks great, my metabolism seems to be much faster, and my cravings and eating habits have really subsided. I’m hoping everything stays this great! Also, my insurance covered this completely!"
