"I am not sure after 10 days (as instructed) that the UTI is completely gone. But I do not want to take any more of this med, as I have had sore shoulders and hips, as well as mood swings during treatment. I have lupus, and I feel that to continue cipro would be dangerous for me."

"I caught a urinary tract infection after being sick from stomach flu/virus and was prescribed Cipro (500 mg). After one pill in the evening, I became tired, went to bed, and woke up anxious, depressed, restless, with loss of balance. I've had antibiotics (amoxicillin, I think) once in the past, but never had anything like this kind of reaction. Waiting for a call from my doctor for a different medicine."

"About 6 hours after my first dose, I developed a rash on my torso, back, and front. Also, from my armpits to my wrists. My ears were ringing, and I was drowsy. This morning, my skin is red, itchy, and burning as if I have a sunburn. I am NOT continuing to take the rest of it, as I'm allergic, and I WILL NOT ever take it again, and will discourage others from doing so. I have called my physician to change medication."

"DANGEROUS. Prescribed this for a very painful bladder infection and was given no warnings. I suffered nearly all the side effects (nausea was the worst), but the 500 mg every 12 hours only had an effect for about 6 hours, the infection would return before it was time to take the next dose. Three days of 40-degree Celsius fevers, being worn down, very little sleep, uncontrollable shaking twice each day, and I was in a bad way. I'm 59 and have taken antibiotics all my life-yearly in fact-until about 25 years ago when I gave up smoking. Since then, I have taken antibiotics maybe four times. The last time was about a year ago for a cat bite down to the bone. Don't recall any side effects. I went private yesterday and got the pills changed."

"I had to go to the doctor yesterday with urgency. I was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection and vaginosis all at the same time, and probably herpes as well. I haven't rated this yet because I just started the treatment. I have to take them every 12 hours for 7 days. I really hope it relieves by tomorrow, this is the worst pain ever. I wouldn't desire this to anyone. It is living hell, unfortunately. I can't even walk straight because of how bad it is. I've been crying like never before. The only way I noticed it hurts less to pee for me is when I am in the shower, inclined forward. Like I said, hopefully, tomorrow the itching and burning go away!"

"I have frequent bladder infections/UTIs. I have always, with the exception of a one-time prescription to Augmentin, taken Cipro. It gets rid of the infection, but I have concerns about frequent, long-term use of the drug. I have taken Cipro for three different illnesses, so it's very versatile, however, it tends to give me a yeast infection."

"I will NEVER take this ciprofloxacin garbage again!!! I was taking Ambien (I will also never take it again, seeing that it takes a full week to get out of your system). Anyways, I was told to stop taking the Ambien when I started the Cipro. Well, I started the Cipro and the very next day I was excessively drowsy and horribly depressed!!! Even though I stopped the Ambien. I was so, so sleepy I couldn't see straight! I had absolutely no appetite for two weeks, even after stopping the Cipro. I had lost 10 pounds in 2 weeks from not being able to eat!!!! Besides being extremely sleepy, my mood had gone downhill pretty fast. I was nauseous, my head pounded, and I was also extremely grouchy. None of this started until I started the Cipro. Never ever again. I will stick to Bactrim."

"I took Cipro 250 mg for a urine infection. One pill two times a day for 5 days. It’s been 2 days after taking the antibiotic, and I can’t control my urine, I have urine leakage, severe stomach pain, and back pain. I fear I now have a kidney infection, and urine leakage may never go away."

"Had a bladder infection for over 2 weeks before doctors found the tablets I was on were the wrong ones for my infection, as a UTI takes many forms. You must not drink milk or have anything dairy for 2 hours beforehand and 2 hours after taking the tablet. If you drink coffee or tea, you must drink the same amount in water afterward. Not had any side effects following these rules to a T. Been told that I need to drink water after every coffee or tea I have now as it's pointing to me damaging my kidneys because there is blood in the urine, I must follow this for the rest of my life if I want to keep fit. I live in the UK. The test the hospital did on my urine sample showed I was on the wrong treatment as it wouldn't kill that particular bacteria."

"My first bladder infection. First drug didn't work. Gave me this ciprofloxacin next, 500 mg 2x daily every 12 hr. First and second night I had night terrors. I'm allergic to other meds, and the doctor told me that there was nothing else, discussed doing one pill in the morning. Talked to the pharmacist, they suggested taking the second 7-8 hours after the morning dose. Night terrors tamed. Finished 5 days - 2 days later my knee was extremely painful. Another two days, I am now leaking urine with no control. My other knee hurts and hip and elbow. Saw a knee specialist, and he stated he could inject cortisone or wait - I opted for the inject since my other joints were hurting, and I do not want to cause more damage due to walking funny. My knee pain is almost gone. My other knee, hip, elbow all gone. My leakage, gone. All doctors scratched their heads with the urine leakage, I am convinced it was the drug."

"Bladder/body infection. Groin swelling and abdominal pain. Prescribed two weeks' dosage, which cleared symptoms. Ok for one after. Then the infection came back. This time, same symptoms, but now spread to kidney pain, also causing lower back pain. Re-prescribed further dosage, this time for 4 weeks. Further checks to be done, i.e., scan and blood test booked. Meanwhile, within two weeks, all symptoms now gone again 100%. But carrying on to complete dosage for further two weeks. Final diagnosis: likely cause originated from UTI - urinary tract infection. I consider this medicine to be suitable but deems to be only of a mild strength. There were no side effects. And I am generally always very fit, never getting any illnesses apart from common colds."

"Horrible drug! Very painful skin rashes still bothersome after 1 1/2 years. Severe tendonitis in legs, arms, and hands. Nerve damage in legs and hands. Took Cipro 500 mg twice per day as directed. Stopped at day five of a ten-day Rx, could not tolerate any further. UTI did clear, but Cipro has damaged me. I am a 71-year-old male."

"I had to take Cipro for UTI since I had mild to moderate reactions to Macrobid or Bactrim. Will not take again even if it did clear the UTI and I could not take my Crestor or Ibuprofen during the 3-day course and had a mild 'swelling' feeling in the back of the throat which was relieved by Zyrtec. Tell MD of all allergies before taking."

"I’ve had a UTI for the past two weeks now. I was first prescribed Macrobid, which didn’t completely get rid of my UTI, as I still have urgency and frequency to urinate. I was then prescribed Cipro. Didn’t work at all. I have now been prescribed Keflex. Fingers crossed."

"Both my mother and husband developed C. diff. after taking Cipro for a urinary infection. Both were over 65, and both had hospital stays after taking that drug. My husband had only taken it for 5 days out of the 10 prescribed. I will never take it."

"This is the worst antibiotic I have ever taken. I took it for 4 days. I've only been able to eat very little, my stomach is burning, I have cramps, and I'm puking. I would not recommend this to my worst enemy. I'm losing weight back. I couldn't take it the full 7 days, it's too harsh on the system. I stopped for 2 days and still have horrible side effects."

"I have had a lot of bladder infections years ago from pregnancies, but haven't had one in 4/5 years. A few days ago, I noticed the symptoms, went to the doc, and he prescribed me this. I've always been prescribed amoxicillin, and it's worked great. This time, he prescribed this because of my history. Took my 1st pill today, and within 30 mins, started to feel faint, weak, and an out-of-body experience. I was at home by myself with my 8-month-old baby, so I immediately got in the car, drove to the local hospital, which is conveniently only 5 mins away, and sat in the parking lot. I started to feel better, but still not 100%. Called a nurse I know who said I'll be fine, but get a different prescription. I'm going to try taking half for my 2nd dose or else I'll stop."

"If I could rate this drug lower than 1, I would. Last year, my mother went to a local hospital to be treated for a routine bladder infection. A clearly untrained nurse gave my mother this drug, and she took 1 pill that afternoon. Within 45 minutes, she had collapsed and had gone into anaphylactic shock. The drug caused a chain reaction in her blood, and she suffered total kidney failure. She spent 3 weeks in an intensive care unit, on the brink of death. Her whole body swelled with edema from around 76 kgs to over 120 kgs in the time she was in the hospital, she couldn't move and had to be fed intravenously. Luckily, she recovered and left the hospital 4 weeks later."

"Bacterial resistance to Cipro: I took Cipro for 2 days for a bladder infection until the urinalysis identified the specific bacteria causing the infection. Then was switched to another, more specific drug for the bacteria I had. After my second infection a few months later, I was kept on Cipro for several days, but the infection stayed. Apparently, the initial 2-day duration of using Cipro allowed me to develop bacterial resistance to it, and Cipro is no longer an effective option for treatment for me. Lesson: Take the full dose for the full time or risk bacterial resistance?"

"Prescribed 7-day treatment for UTI (2x/day) of ciprofloxacin 500 mg, two months after a 6-week course of BCG infusions for bladder cancer. Only took 11 pills, then stopped because of warnings of possible side effects. Then about two weeks after that, started to have pains in the right side around the right kidney area. Now this week, my left side kidney area is aching. Dr. is out of town until Monday the 28th of Nov."

"Cipro worked amazingly for me with any of my bladder infections. I am highly allergic to Bactrim (itchy all over my body for weeks). I have Sjögren's and rheumatoid arthritis. They say a lot of people with autoimmune disorders have allergic reactions to Bactrim. I'm so happy my doctor prescribes Cipro when I have a bladder infection."

"I woke up with a severe pain in my abdomen, thought it was a sketchy chicken I consumed, nope. That was Sunday, went to the doctor on Tuesday, prescribed Cipro, took the first one right away, following directions to a T. Next day with no sleep, but didn't have to go pee 10 times during the night, didn't have any burning sensation to begin with. I do have a fever, just took my third dose of 500 mg 2x a day for 5 days. I have a fever of 102.8, I will wait until tomorrow and see if it persists. Will change my rating if it works or harms after finishing prescription."

"I had left an earlier review when starting. I was prescribed this medication, 500 mg twice a day for 5 days. For the first 3 days, it gave me a terrible fever, 103, 102.9, 102.8. I then did research and took an over-the-counter Tylenol with the prescribed medication, which helped with the fevers. This medication also gave me severe nausea, I was only eating two pieces of dry toast twice a day. I will not be using this medication again, hope it helps others though. Two weeks out, and the infection has gotten a little better but not gone."

"I had a bladder infection pop up, and I specifically directed the 'substitute' doc (my primary was out) for no antibiotics in the Cipro/Floro family. I had been prescribed years earlier before I fully understood the risk. He didn’t have a clue as to the side effects! My daughter suffered from tendinitis for 8 years after having Cipro as a pre-teen. Unfortunately, one Achilles blowout at 17 ended her star soccer career. There are other drugs that work well on the same issues, with fewer side effects! Stay away from this overprescribed drug. The long-term damage far outweighs the short-term relief."

"I have had every drug under the sun for persistent UTIs for the last 4 years. I live in the UK and never heard of this drug. I was on holiday and had to consult a doctor who gave me this drug. I have had no side effects, and I have just finished a 7-day course. The infection has gone, and I am just waiting to see if this has worked long term."
