For Indigestion "I was prescribed this pill for heartburn/acid reflux I experienced as a result of food poisoning. I took this pill yesterday afternoon and experienced stomach pain, nausea, heartburn, acid reflux, insomnia, anxiety, and heart racing. I will not be continuing this pill! I take Pepcid or natural alternatives like baking soda, ACV, and aloe vera juice. This medicine also states that it does not provide immediate relief for heartburn. This was not a good experience for me."

For Gastritis/Duodenitis "I was prescribed this drug by an NP to treat gastritis, at 20 mg daily for 30 days. I had been diagnosed with gastritis before and was told to take Pepcid daily, and I had no issues with that. The NP told me the only side effect I might experience taking omeprazole was diarrhea. In reality, what I experienced was a massive increase in anxiety, depression, and nightly panic attacks. My resting heart rate has gone up about 20 bpm after taking omeprazole for just 20 days. I am unable to fall asleep until well into the morning, so only 3-5 hours per night. I have had anxiety and depression for years, but never as intensely as it is now. I did not consider that the omeprazole was the cause of it! I started a new anxiety medication a little over a month ago and blamed it on my body adjusting to that. After reading these reviews, I am almost certain the mood and sleep disturbances I am experiencing are due to taking omeprazole. The acid in my stomach is reduced, but that could be my change in diet."

For Helicobacter Pylori Infection "Had a positive H. pylori test. Symptoms were heartburn and indigestion. Given triple therapy, which included omeprazole 20 mg twice a day. Felt tummy felt better after three days of antibiotics, but then the side effects kicked in. Anxiety really bad, couldn't concentrate or work or look after kids: nausea, blurred vision, loss of appetite, sleep. The list goes on. I finished my one-week antibiotics and went on to take a further 8 days just to be sure I was OK. It sorted my heartburn, yes, and helped with acid, but I felt like I was going insane. Stopped taking them today, and hopefully my side effects were off. I'm just tired of it all now."

For Helicobacter Pylori Infection "Given omeprazole 20 mg (mostly 2 x day) when I had some painful burning sensation in the upper part of my stomach. I was with that for about 2 months while they found the root cause of my problem (I was having tests and scans and all were normal). The problem was that it all took so long (COVID-related delays). But then, I found out I had H. pylori. So I got the antibiotics treatment plus PPI (30 mg twice a day) for a week. The doctor did not guide me on whether I should or should not continue with omeprazole (and nothing at all on the side effects). So I stopped it after the H. pylori treatment, and then I had a horrible rebound of the acidity (and terrible back pain, constipation, dizziness that took me to A&E, lack of sleep, nervousness, fatigue, shortness of breath). I had these effects on and off also while taking omeprazole. So back to omeprazole. In total, I had omeprazole for 9 weeks. Now, day 7 after stopping it and feeling better but now dealing with rebound symptoms. CAUTION SHOULD BE GIVEN BEFORE TAKING THIS MED!!!"

For GERD "My GP prescribed 40 mg of omeprazole for acid reflux/GERD. After about 3 weeks of taking it, I noticed the same side effects that I had with pantoprazole: the anxiety attacks, the bloating, gas, tightness, constipation, and stomach spasms. My GP told me to stop taking the pantoprazole immediately and replaced it with omeprazole. Unfortunately, unlike the pantoprazole, I did not inform my GP of the side effects until about a few days later, after I stopped taking the omeprazole. As things got worse, I started experiencing more rebound effects from stopping omeprazole 'cold turkey': the acid reflux was 10 times worse, the anxiety attacks were more frequent, the bloating, constipation, and gas were unbearable, and the excruciating stomach spasms went from once a week to every hour. The rebound effects from discontinuing the omeprazole got so bad I had to go to the ER! My GP eventually referred me to a GI specialist who prescribed an antispasmodic, the FODMAP diet plan, Pepcid, Gas-X, and MiraLAX."

For GERD "I have suffered from GERD for a long time. I've tried everything under the sun with limited help. Lansoprazole works but at a high dose, but then came omeprazole. It worked. Holy smokes, my acid reflux was better. My sore throat and phlegm were decreasing, then at the 10-day mark, the side effects kicked in. Oh man, they're terrible. Dizzy, exhaustion, sleepless nights, anxiety, and sour stomach. I feel like garbage. Yeah, it's made my GERD better, but at what cost? I quit them 2 days ago, and hopefully soon these symptoms will go away. Horrible, horrible drug."

For GERD "I have been on a very low dose of antidepressants, 10 mg, for 3 months and feel good, however, they make my stomach burn. My doctor prescribed omeprazole, 20 mg, and I have been taking it for 2 days. My mum always screams at me for googling side effects, but thank God I do because the side effects on the leaflet of omeprazole do not say brain fog, anxiety, or depression. I am thankful to you all for your reviews because without reading them I wouldn’t have stopped at just 2. Wish you all the best."

For Helicobacter Pylori Infection "Usual dose is 20 mg/day, but for H. pylori, I was given antibiotics plus omeprazole 40 mg twice a day for 10 days. My stomach pain was gone after two days. After seven days, I had to stop taking it due to lightheadedness, dizziness, anxiety, and nervousness, which started at day five. At day eight, the doctor changed me to pantoprazole 40 mg twice a day for three more days. The symptoms are the same but just less severe. I called out sick from work yesterday, day nine. I am just suffering it out as I want to be rid of the H. pylori. After I’m done with the 10 days, I will never take another drug in this family of PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors) again."

For GERD "Started a PPI in 2014. Was misdiagnosed, then had wrong meds for misdiagnosis. Then put on omeprazole in 2016 for the GERD and hiatal hernia. I also take Klonopin. But the side effects of the omeprazole are anxiety, panic, unable to sleep, don't want to be around people. Feel terrible all the time. Sometimes, it feels like my stomach is pushing my ribs through my skin. I'm still looking for help in getting off these meds and taking my life back. The last 8 years have been awful! Do not take this rubbish!!!!! Does anyone have the answer? I really need help, and trust no doctors at this time of COVID, and going for tests at any hospital."

For Gastritis/Duodenitis "I used it for 3 weeks. I have 4 days that I did not use it anymore because I feel very bad. Every night when I go to sleep, I get dizzy. Tremors do not let me sleep. I don't know what happens to me. My head is not well. I am very stressed. I do not know where it comes from. How long will it last?"

For GERD "I have a strange relationship with this medication. It helps when my acid is really bad, I have to take it for a few days, and then I feel good. But if I continue taking it, I feel awful and have all the side effects everyone else has listed. I stop taking it once I start to feel better, and then after a few weeks' break, I find I need to reach for it again. They say rebound acid should only last around two weeks, so I don’t think it’s that as I go nearly a month without taking it, and then all of a sudden acid comes back in full force. Every time I start taking it again, I get headaches, funny vision, and tiredness on the first day, but by day 3, it’s settled, then by day 10 of taking it, I get anxiety, funny feelings all over my body, and general unease and feelings of being unwell. I guess I’ll just have to keep dipping in and out with this drug until something better comes along!"

For GERD "Pros: no acid reflux. Cons: headaches, body/joint aches, increased anxiety. Daily diarrhea, bloating. I get to about day 10 and have to stop. I take citalopram for anxiety (long before reflux issues). I find I can't keep my anxiety symptoms in check while on this medication."

For GERD "I suffer from acid reflux and a feeling there is something in my throat and was prescribed omeprazole by my GP (General Practitioner) 20 mg a day. On the first day, I woke up in the middle of the night with my heart racing, anxiety, and a feeling of wanting to scream. I was overwhelmed with fear and mental fog. On the second day, the effect was even worse. I had severe abdominal pain, aches and pains in my joints, and anxiety. I am coming off the medication immediately. I have opted for the healthy options to address the acid reflux: maintain a healthy weight, change my diet, apple cider vinegar, ginger, and the like."

For Stomach Ulcer "I am pregnant with my second child, and out of nowhere, my midwife diagnosed me with a stomach ulcer. I was prescribed omeprazole (20 mg) 2 times daily. Instantly, the dull, achy, burning pain from the ulcer was resolved and tolerable. Unfortunately, it gave me the worst anxiety. I already have an anxiety disorder that was manageable before the medicine, but not even a full week into taking omeprazole, I was having constant racing, intrusive thoughts. I’d rather have the stomach pains than the anxiety. I’m currently weaning myself off the medicine to take something different."

For GERD "This drug did not help my mom. What they gave her was depression and anxiety. She doesn’t sleep at all. She lost a lot of weight. She says all her muscles ache. Before taking them, she was outgoing, and now she stays in bed all day. I don’t know what to do. Looking at the other reviews, I see that many of you who took this drug have experienced similar effects. How can you overcome this terrible drug? Please help."

For GERD "I have the worst stomach, and no diet changes have ever been able to make it better. I was on Nexium for a very long time, never had issues until insurance took it away and put me on omeprazole, and at first I was okay, but eventually I would start getting heartburn, and it was mild, so I chalked it up to eating wrong, rinse and repeat… About 2-3 months ago, I started having mild panic attacks, and the heartburn went insane, it was bad, and nothing I did helped. Eventually, I started to feel like I had an ulcer. It's something I have never experienced before… The doctor said I need to change my diet again. Fast forward to two weeks ago, I had another doctor reduce my omeprazole (which I didn’t). I went out and bought Nexium in 20 mg (I'm on 40 mg omeprazole). I didn’t want to change my script and have my issues go out of control. Anyway, I've been taking the 20 mg Nexium, and I haven’t had any heartburn, and the stomach pains and anxiety have disappeared. I believe I’m allergic to something in omeprazole."

For GERD "I've taken 40 mg once per day for roughly 4 years now with minimal side effects. Only noticeable downside was a slight increase in anxiety (I have an anxiety disorder to begin with, so it was hard to notice). It completely eliminated my acid reflux, to the point where I basically didn't have GERD anymore. Now, after years of being 99% symptom-free, I have had severe GERD symptoms for over a week now. I would assume I just got a bad batch of omeprazole this month, but I finished 3 weeks of my prescription with no symptoms. I believe the drug has simply stopped working for me. TLDR: Drug worked great for me, but seems to have stopped working entirely after ~4 years."

For GERD "I was prescribed esomeprazole for stomach reflux acid some months ago. At first, they worked well, but after 3 months, I started experiencing low mood and anxiety. I stopped taking these over 3 weeks ago, but these symptoms are still there. My appetite is also very weak. Can anyone share how long it took for these effects to leave your system after stopping these PPI medications? I feel it affected my gut biome and vitamin and mineral absorption. I am taking slippery elm food to ease my acid reflux. I am in the EU. Any advice greatly appreciated."

"I have been taking this for a week now. I was put on omeprazole while they are still doing tests to find out what's wrong. Side effects are awful headaches, increased depression, and anxiety, but could also be from not knowing what is wrong with me. Two months of pain that is often so bad I can't do anything but curl up in bed and run to the bathroom. Food comes out explosively from both ends, and this little pill stopped that. I can go out and eat (no citric acid, no caffeine, no seeded foods)-not much left to eat, but I can eat without being sick. I'm always hungry and full of gas-also side effects from this pill. I don't want to take it for too long, as it has really bad side effects from prolonged use. Praying there isn't anything seriously wrong with my stomach. I do recommend it for temporary use."
