For GERD "I really never comment on websites such as these, as I’ve been fairly healthy for all of my life. I was recently diagnosed with GERD and was told to take a 40 mg pill of omeprazole daily. I implore you all to exhaust all options before taking this pill. I am only on Day 1, and I have had anxiety and sentiments of hopelessness. Even as someone who is generally very happy and calm, I now cannot watch a TV series without getting anxiety after taking this medication. I will be halting its consumption and hoping that the side effects disappear soon."

For GERD "I had GERD in Sept, and my doctor prescribed this drug. I got anxiety for 2 months non-stop after I stopped the drug. I didn’t know what caused my anxiety. I took it again in March, and my anxiety came back, never going back to this drug again!"

For GERD "I am so glad I did some research and found these reviews. I literally never comment or leave reviews on anything, but decided to leave one on here. I literally just switched to Omeprazole because my new insurance company doesn’t cover Lansoprazole. I have been on it for 5 days and have been experiencing terrible anxiety every day on it, which has resulted in me getting very little sleep. I even experienced something I have never experienced in my life, which was a panic attack that woke me up. Since it has been such a short time on this drug, I didn’t even think of the drug being the reason for these symptoms, so I thank you all for posting. I am going to stop tomorrow and see if my anxiety goes away."

For GERD "I've been on Omeprazole going on 10 years. No one ever mentioned anemia or any of the other problems that can come from this medication. I've been trying to get off this med for close to a year. Went down from 40mg to 20 mg, not too bad. Now trying to get off 20mg. For the last week, I've had chills, headaches, diarrhea, extreme heartburn, anxiety, body aches, exhaustion, and depression. This is awful. It helped reflux but at quite a price. B12, MAGNESIUM, FERRETIN SHOULD ALL BE MONITORED WHILE ON THIS MED. I had a hysterectomy and gallbladder removed in the last 5 years and wonder if those surgeries could have been avoided."

For GERD "I had taken omeprazole years ago for acid reflux and had no side effects. I recently started taking it again (20 mg) and I’m on day 4. Something changed. My anxiety is very bad. Like bad! I’m out of it, feeling like I’m not in the real world. I’m dizzy and my body aches. Horrible headaches too! And I’m extremely depressed. I’m going to stop taking it tomorrow, and hopefully, I start to feel better this week. Hopefully, I don’t have withdrawals or anything. Couldn’t be worse than this anyway. I’m going to give it a 3 just because it worked years ago for me with no side effects."

For GERD "I've been taking this wretched drug for nearly a year now and only just realized it's causing all these insane side effects that have sent me to the ER multiple times. Since taking this drug, I've had horrific pains in my shoulder and left side chest (6 occasions attended ER due to thinking it was a heart attack or something), tinnitus and general ear infection/problems in both ears randomly, nausea and dizziness on occasion, liver pain/disease which is getting worse despite doing everything to make it better, itchiness on my scalp and back, pain in my ribs and sides, stiff neck, increased nervousness and anxiety, memory isn't as sharp anymore, a constant feeling of impending doom and a multitude of other horrible side effects. Having been reading all these comments on various forums recently due to a particularly bad few weeks of pain and misery, it's clear that omeprazole has had a big part to play in ruining my life this last year."

For Indigestion "I was prescribed this for indigestion and a mild concentric ring on the esophagus. Was advised it was safe. I don't take any other medications and am healthy. Took for less than 4 months and the side effects started in the 4th month - tinnitus, depression, anxiety, panic. Never knew what these were until I took this. Stopped it straight away after researching this. The withdrawals were horrendous. Depression, anxiety, kidney problems - 2 antibiotics to treat. Lost over 2 stone in weight the first few weeks as I couldn't eat. Appetite returned after about 6 weeks. Went to see a functional medicine practitioner and am taking natural remedies that are helping hugely. I was glad to find this site and some others to know that this is what was causing all this. I am over 3 months out now and things are lifting. I read most people's recovery takes 3 to 6 months. I will never take this again, and I will research anything I am ever advised to take with a degree of intense analysis."

For GERD "I had a bad bout of reflux, and the doctor prescribed 40 mg daily. I felt relief, but about 2 weeks later, I had blood in my urine. I went to the doctor right away because I was freaked out. I told them that I read blood in urine was a side effect, but I had to do an ultrasound to check my kidneys and bladder, as well as doing a urinalysis. Thankfully, all tests came back okay, and the doctor told me to stop the omeprazole. No more blood! I also had increased anxiety and thought it was just nervousness because I was sick. Now, after reading these posts, I think it was the drug."

For Indigestion "Omeprazole caused extreme anxiety, feeling like my life is a struggle, panic attacks, weight loss (10 kg in 5 weeks), palpitations, chest and arm pain on the left side, brain fog, weakness and chills in legs and arms, dizziness, nausea, general fatigue, numbness, flatulence, joint pain (hip) after gentle walks, forgetfulness, fear of eating. I have stopped cold turkey after having come across reviews of Omeprazole and Protonix, which I took as well. Took Omeprazole for 2 weeks, got these symptoms, told the doctor who changed the med to be pantoprazole (Protonix). The last 2.5 months or so have been the worst of my life so far, it has taken a toll on my family and work life too. The doctor thought I might need antidepressants given all the anxiety, but after around a week or so of stopping these, I am starting to feel a bit better. So, I am not going to take anti-anxiety related meds. It is a vicious cycle, PPIs cause depression, and then you take depression meds that are difficult to stop!"

For GERD "I have been taking Prilosec for approximately 5 1/2 weeks because I had very bad heartburn due to a drug called naproxen (I have a hiatal hernia). Over the few weeks, I noticed that I have become extremely nervous, insomniac, have foggy concentration, and blurred vision. I was on Prilosec a few years back, and it did not cause this reaction. At one point, the doctor had me double the 40 mg dosage, and I was taking 80 mg a day. I lost my appetite and also lost approximately 30 lbs since I began this treatment. Currently, due to the insomnia, I am now taking sleep aids, which I do not want to be on either. I get approximately 3-5 hours of sleep a day. Today will be my first day not taking the Prilosec, but I want to know how long it was before people started feeling better. It says you should taper off, so I will take it every other day for about 1 week to see if I feel any better."

For Stomach Ulcer "I was prescribed 20 mg of omeprazole for what I was diagnosed with last week as stomach ulcers. Within 4 hours, I had searing back pain. I’m talking labor pains strong. I thought my kidneys were having a bad reaction, so I drank and drank and drank water as much as possible. Another 4 hours later, it was 50% better, but then the panic and anxiety attacks set in. I thought I was crazy until I started doing research. If something seems odd, look up the side effects, as there are MANY!"

For GERD "Was put on 20 mg of this for about 2 1/2 months after experiencing intense daily heartburn and acid reflux. I had taken it before for only a week, and it helped, so the doctor prescribed it again. I have never felt what has been happening to me before. I stopped in May, and it is now the end of September. Anxiety, shortness of breath, joint pain, brain fog, and inability to focus my thoughts. Feeling unable to control my thoughts. Nausea, discomfort, fear, and hopelessness. When I first stopped, symptoms would be gone for a few days, then back. Around August, I would go weeks without symptoms, but about a week before my period, they would start coming back. Began seeing a functional medicine doctor who provided me with vitamin D, a trace mineral supplement, and iron, which I started taking in August. So afraid this is going to happen for the rest of my life, and I am a single mother. Any other woman experience an uptick in their symptoms around their period? This is a terrifying way to feel."

Omeprazole for Duodenal Ulcer "DO NOT TAKE HORRIFYING. Took the pills against my better judgment for a nagging ulcer/gastritis per my doc. I usually prefer a holistic route. Mistake. Five days in, an ER trip in an ambulance from sudden dizziness, painful pounding chest, panic like I was dying, extreme sweating, numb hands and feet, and pulse through the roof. Tests showed nothing but ended up back in the ER after night after night of undeniable horrific panic, sweating, extreme anxiety (I have never experienced anxiety or anything panic attack related before in my life), claustrophobic and anxiety-ridden nervous thoughts that are unshakable. No sleep for days. With two toddlers, it was torture. It could not have been anything but these awful pills obviously. I quit the pills, am seeing an acupuncturist and herbs to detox. Better but still a work in progress. Please do NOT risk your mental health over this poison. Not worth it one bit."

For GERD "I was just prescribed omeprazole this week. The first day I took it, I thought it was magic. Suddenly, my terrible, nightly heartburn was completely gone. Unfortunately, the side effects are numerous, immediate, and simply not worth it! It gave me a constant headache, messed up my sleep, made me feel a constant lingering nausea, and made me feel emotional emptiness, anxiety, and sluggishness. I usually take ibuprofen for headaches, and it works very well. It would not touch the headaches caused by omeprazole. Also, my normal remedies for feeling anxiety or stress did not work at all. I have a few go-to substances that usually totally wipe it out. Neither worked. So after very little sleep for three days, a constant headache, feeling like I needed to throw up, and a major increase in anxiety along with empty and hopeless feelings, I have stopped taking the omeprazole. It is back to antacids for me and some needed diet changes. This stuff is horrible!!!"

For GERD "Within 12 hours of taking this medication, I got the chills, dizziness, stomach cramps, and extreme dry mouth. Within 2 hours of taking my second dose, I experienced anxiety, swelling of the tongue, throat, and glands, continued dizziness, extreme dry mouth and thirst, frequent urination, and stomach cramps."

For Gastritis/Duodenitis "I was given these as a ‘quick-fix’ solution after burning my esophagus. As a fit and active 30-year-old, I’d never actually had heartburn in my life, but I now found myself getting it whenever I ate certain foods (which I couldn’t understand) and had the feeling of a lump in my throat. This was obviously just a side effect of the drug, but it didn’t click in my head. Eventually, after an endoscopy showed gastritis, I was switched onto omeprazole. Taking these for 2 weeks changed everything. I developed a tremor, muscle twitches where I'd literally drop my phone, jolting awake just as I'm nodding off (repeatedly all night), and feelings of anxiety/depression that I never knew existed. It's been 4 months now, and I'm finally getting there. You need to taper off these drugs, doctors won't even bother telling you, but when you stop, your body creates more acid than before-hyper-secretion-which can take weeks/months to adapt to, so a lot of people get caught in a vicious cycle."

For GERD "I’ve been on this medication for 3 weeks, and it helped a lot with my acid reflux symptoms (lump in throat feeling). However, during the second week, I started noticing my mood changing and becoming more anxious/paranoid. Then, in the third week, I had muscle aches and panic attacks. I stopped taking this 2 days ago and am still feeling dizzy, anxious, and nauseous. Anxiety/Depression sufferers, beware of this medication, as it definitely heightens them. I will now look for more natural solutions to GERD, such as a healthier diet and smaller portions. This medication is not worth the side effects, in my opinion."

For Gastritis/Duodenitis "Just wanted to reach back out after leaving a review last year and after a very long recovery process after taking this drug. I had all of the negative side effects that most have mentioned here, including debilitating anxiety, panic, palpitations, pins and needles, severe aches and pains that seemed to jump from one organ to another, POTS, fatigue, food sensitivities, insomnia. Went from a healthy 37-year-old mom to a shell of her old self after just 4 doses of this awful poison. My naturopath diagnosed a limbic system impairment, which explained it all. Toxin exposure, sensitivity to drugs/supplements, chemicals, mold exposure, and a host of things can set off the limbic/nervous system to go haywire, which is exactly what this drug did to me. For those still suffering, I highly recommend a DNRS program to retrain the nervous system out of the now activated fight or flight and find yourself a good naturopath to detox. I’m all good now after this terrible pill, healing is possible! - xo"

For GERD "This medication at 20 mg was enough to relieve the symptoms of GERD, but for months, I started to suffer with symptoms I've never really experienced - anxiety, major lack of concentration, brain fog, aching on days where I had done no physical training. I have come off the medication for 2 weeks and already started feeling better, and the side effects have disappeared. I have changed my diet to combat the GERD effects, although this hasn't completely solved it, I also take a good multivitamin now. The medication was not worth the side effects."

For Hiatal Hernia "I honestly surprised how many people here are battling with depression and anxiety because of this medication. I got to say I've been on this for a month, and I totally saw the difference for the better. Yesterday, I had my last tablet, and today I'm feeling the difference of the acid again. I totally believe that people who are suffering these side effects have been battling them for years now, and for some reason, this medicine amplified them."

For Indigestion "Was prescribed 20 mg a day for indigestion and suspected stomach ulcer as having sharp pains in the upper stomach, as well as heartburn and indigestion. Took capsule in the morning 30 mins before breakfast. Helped the indigestion, but I have severe dizziness where I feel drunk or doped up, chest and stomach pain, and my anxiety is through the roof. After 7 tablets, I ended up going to the hospital as I thought I was having a heart attack. I was examined and told my anxiety was driving my stomach and chest pain. That may be the case, however, the omeprazole was definitely driving the anxiety. I'm quitting this medication from tomorrow and pray I feel and get better."

For Hiatal Hernia "I had the camera by mouth, told that I have a small hiatal hernia. I've been taking lansoprazole for 20 mg twice a day and was feeling so bad. I had nausea, muscle pain, headache, anxiety, and after I told the doctor, he told me to change to omeprazole, which the first days it was okay, but after 1 week it started to cause so much anxiety, numbness in my foot, sweating all over my body. It's so horrible. It still doesn’t work, and I still have the symptoms as before in my stomach. I've been on PPI medication for 1 month, nothing has changed, just getting worse."

For Stomach Ulcer "Was on Prilosec for two months. I started having gas and rumbling intestines. I quit cold turkey. Didn't realize that would cause horrible withdrawal. It caused lack of appetite, (6 months out I'm still not back to normal, and just now gaining a little bit of my weight back) insomnia, anxiety attacks, high BP, nausea, etc. Too much to list. Truly bad for me! I'm sorry I ever took it! I've lost work, sleep, and just enjoying life because of that pill. Please be careful! Wish I could turn back time."
