"I’ve jumped around on different BP meds for 2 years now. Took atenolol with triamterene with no side effects for years and years. Switched to propranolol for essential tremors - 2/3 of my hair fell out in 2 months!!!!! I went back to atenolol and my hair continued falling out but not as badly. Taken off triamterene due to chronic kidney disease that was misdiagnosed for several years. Taken off atenolol at my insistence. Put on losartan, which causes sleepiness, so I take it at night. But BP 150-155/80 became the norm upon awakening. So added this metoprolol succinate ER. It’s been 4 days, and I’m exhausted and keep falling asleep. Dr. stressed to give it 6 weeks. Now BP runs much better, except diastolic less than 70. So hopefully my body will adjust. My BP morning headaches are gone, though, so huge improvement there. History of strokes in both grandmothers, high BP both parents. I’m a senior citizen. I’m rating 5 out of 10 for now."

"Was on it 25 mg for 4 years for BP and after getting a stent @ 62 yrs. It wasn’t a good match with my system. Restricted breathing, insomnia, exercise intolerance, extreme fatigue, borderline depression. Slowed me down so much I lost interest & energy for doing anything. Felt like I had an Ace bandage wrapped around my chest. My BP was only 140/80 before. After was about 128/65. I’ve been exercising for 14 years. Side effects outweighed the benefit. I switched to Bystolic today ($120/90 day supply). Wish me luck. If this 2nd beta blocker doesn’t work with my system, my next move is to switch to amlodipine; I’ll be going to a calcium channel blocker."

"I have been on Propranolol for over 6 years, and a new cardiologist switched me to this drug. I wasn't very happy, and now I feel swollen inside, even my lips feel swollen. I don't really notice a huge difference from Propranolol. I am checking all reviews from both drugs, but I am going to switch back just as soon as I know it's safe to do so."

"I'm supposed to take this medication for my blood pressure, but a year and a half later, the pressure is still the same, even though the doctor increased the dose from 50 to 100 mg. Seems like the doctor cares more about my heart rate (that is lower than before, so it is working), but my blood pressure is ever the same, especially the nighttime is ever around 85/140 (sometimes 150 or 160). I told this many times, but he is still thinking about the BPM, so at the end, the BPM decreased but not the blood pressure, so it is working 50/50. PS I gained more than 10 lb after using the Metoprolol."

"I have been on the extended release for 2 months, 25 mg once a day. I love it! I had a blood pressure crisis with non-stop dizziness and BP was 200/100, which happened a week after recovering from COVID. My general doctor put me on this because I also have low potassium (“hypokalemia”), and a diuretic would make it go even lower. I was already on an ACE inhibitor when this happened. The Metoprolol dropped my heart rate to about 58, but gradually it has come back up a little to 68 now. I like it because it makes me feel really calm. I haven’t had any of the negative side effects except a little dizziness when getting up quickly. I didn’t gain weight or feel tired, which I was afraid would happen. It just makes me feel very relaxed all over, in a physical way which carries over to also feeling good mentally. 10/10"

"The newly designed small, elongated Metoprolol Succinate tablet (# 676) is perhaps the most poorly designed pill I have ever taken. It gets stuck in your throat in spite of its small size, causes gagging and has to be chewed. I’ve rarely experienced this with any medication in my life. The old round design went down fine. I’m unclear as to the manufacturer… Teva, Dr. Reddy, or AstraZeneca. But whoever designed it obviously didn’t test it on people."

"Had nasty PVCs a few years ago. Horrible and scary. Also had hypertension forever. But it took an afib episode - brought on by diverticulitis complications - that put me on the Metoprolol. First 50 mg - not quite cutting it - now 100 mg/day. The afib never returned (that I’m aware of anyway), PVCs are less intense and frequent. For me… I love it. No sides, and my BP is now usually 120’s/70’s. Lower heart rate - and the rare anxiety episodes - when I start freaking myself out (typically at night) - is tempered by this med."

"It got my blood pressure under control with 25 mg metoprolol. I take it with 40 mg propranolol divided 2 times a day. Must say it helped a lot. Had social anxiety, which has been almost gone away. Sure, it takes a few weeks/months to get into it, at the beginning, I felt depressed, tired, erectile dysfunction (which is easily treatable with citrulline/arginine or Viagra) and got low blood sugar. Now, after almost a year, I have mild side effects but are treatable (tiredness). Have tried before: diuretics, ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, and ARBs, and for me, beta blockers are the best since the other medications had far worse side effects. Something I have to add is I might have POTS (self-diagnosed), and maybe it’s why it works so well for me. My pulse gets from 60 to under 100 bpm without these."

"I was on Metoprolol ER. The succinate gives me a fast heartbeat and irregular heartbeat and anxiety. I am gonna ask the doctor to switch back to ER. That one, my HR was always low, and no irregular HR."

"I was prescribed this when I had an hours-long AFib episode and went to the ER. No meds prior to this. Cardiologist ended up prescribing this (25 mg once a day) with Pradaxa. The metoprolol has kept my blood pressure down and AFib episodes are relatively rare now and only short-lasting. So, no complaints so far. I feel much better than I did, although I get tired in the late afternoon. But, this might be due to always having trouble sleeping."

"I originally started taking Metoprolol 25 mg once a day due to SVTs. They helped calm them down a bit. I also have PVCs and PACs, especially when my blood pressure is super high. I am now back on this medication and started at 25 mg. Within a few months, it was up to 50 mg. I recently went up to 100 mg from my GP, but now my cardiologist upped me to 200 mg. I have been only taking 100-150 mg. I break the 100 mg pill in half and take 50 mg every six hours. My blood pressure went from 197/130 to approximately 147/97. I have recently changed my diet dramatically and included swimming and walking as exercise. 49F, 208 lbs. Sedentary life for 5 years. No side effects at all. Take with food, though, as directed. Causes nausea without food for me."
