"I've had my third pacer put in the last 18 years. Before the first one, I joined the 200 bpm club. Terrible. After my first pacer, I still felt very powerful heartbeats. So powerful they kept me awake at night. Doc put me on 50 mg metoprolol, and I've felt like a human being ever since. Only complaint is short-term memory. 70-year-old male."

"I'm on my third day of metoprolol and feel very mellow. My heart feels quiet in the way you feel when you finally hit the pavement after a dirt road. I feel nervous having my natural rhythm manipulated, but when it comes to the heart, I'll just do what they say. Had an attack of pericarditis three weeks ago and then atrial fibrillation two days ago. I was told that this was normal after pericarditis. Metoprolol is recommended while the heart recovers."

"My husband has congestive heart failure. Was admitted to the hospital with fluid on his heart and lungs 2 weeks ago. He had never experienced AFIB before. He has been on Atenolol for 13 years with blood pressure controlled. While in the hospital, his monitor started showing AFIB, so they stopped Atenolol and started Metoprolol. He has been weak for several years due to CHF. Now he is combative, not sleeping, and talking in his sleep. But he remembers none of it. Is this part of the drug's side effects? Or due to the fact that the CHF is much worse and he is facing hard reality? Any suggestions or ideas will be helpful. Calling the cardiologist tomorrow."

"I have been taking 25 mg once a day along with Clonidine 2x a day for my extremely high BP. It works very well for me. Now I am having atrial flutters bad, and I've had to increase the metoprolol to 50 mg twice a day. It is working. Yes, I have a low heart rate, but I always have a low HR of around 55 bpm, which is perfectly normal for me. Over the years, I have had heart arrhythmia start and stop out of the blue and for no reason that anyone can find. This beta blocker does work well for me, and I have been using it for years now. And believe me, I have tons of issues with meds, I'm super sensitive, but I am glad this one doesn't bother me."

"I am taking Metoprolol 50mg 3 times per day since the beginning of January, and my heart rate is still very high, 137 bpm on average for a seventy-one-year-old male, previously active and in good health. When I climb stairs, I am short of breath and feel weaker than normal. Previously taking Digoxin 62.5mg x3/day. This controlled/capped my HR at 115 bpm without side effects. So my HR has increased by comparison since starting Metoprolol. I would welcome all your comments."

"Metoprolol 25 mg twice a day did nothing for my AFib, however, when my cardiologist put me on Metoprolol succinate ER 25 mg once a day, it straightened my AFib up because it's an extended release pill that slowly releases the medicine throughout the day and night. Before I took it, I had to have ablation done, which worked for 5 years, then it came back stronger until the extended release version of Metoprolol was given to me. I no longer see my cardiologist every 3 months, but every 6 months. My cardiologist and I are both happy with Metoprolol succinate ER 25 mg for me. It works well."

"I was very happy with 'Betaloc CR 190,' and then they put me on ATF Metoprolol CR 190, and it is crap because if I take 1 in the morning, it only lasts about 10 to 13 hours, and I end up with A/Fib at night. I never ever had this trouble with Betaloc CR 190."

"On 100 mg Metoprolol 2 x per day, I did not notice any issues. Sometimes, I still get short bursts of Afib, but it is generally well-controlled. On lower doses, my heart would race to 130 beats per minute, and my treadmill could never get an accurate reading. After increasing my dose, the treadmill heart rate monitor works well."

"This medication lowered my heart rate to 40 to 50 bpm, which feels too low. I am frequently fatigued, feeling very weak, and trying mild exercise to build strength makes my muscles hurt (because a low heart rate doesn’t get enough blood to my muscles?). I am bloated, and my clothes are getting too tight. I have been on metoprolol tartrate, then succinate, at a low dose - 12.5 mg once daily - for 3 months. I am 70 years old, and even at this low dose, I am very uncomfortable with the side effects. My a-fib was very mild and did not warrant taking blood thinners, and it didn’t seem to be any worse now until a pre-surgery test indicated (…maybe) I may have cardiomyopathy. I am seeing my doctor in a few days. I have to stop this medication because these side effects are making me very depressed."

"I am sure that Betaloc causes me to get a tummy. I take warfarin as I had an aorta valve done 12 years ago (ATS). Have a very healthy diet, a couple of glasses of red wine at night. I am not overweight, but I have a tummy that I never had prior to taking all sorts of beta blockers. I have been on Betaloc now for 9 years after a failed Maze treatment for A/Fib."

"The drug had its use during my first experience with Afib, but even on 25 mg, I had severe side effects. If I took my dose just a few hours late, my BP would go through the roof and land me in the ER. It also caused my heart rate to drop to 30 during sleep, which my PCP said is dangerously low. I have successfully weaned off it over 14 days (slowly decreased dosage), and my blood pressure is now stable in the 120s/70s range. I’m happy I’m off it now. I feel so much better. May be a pill to carry around if my Afib runs out of control, but my average heart rate is 70-80 during recent episodes while on Multaq."

"I have been prescribed this medication, and most all side effects are happening: depression, very sleepy and lethargic, ringing in my ears. My stomach hurts, and appetite not good. I really cannot say what good it is doing, but I really snapped at my wife today, telling her I am done taking this medication. Actually, I will taper off it, as there are severe warnings about abruptly stopping. 25 mg once a day I was prescribed, but originally twice a day, and I informed the doctor of side effects and then went to 25 mg once a day, but I have got to get off this stuff."

"My heart was in extreme afib almost every day, with crushing chest pain after losing insurance. Went back on metoprolol 1 month ago, and I've only had 1 major attack and a few flutters. It has been a game changer for me."

"This was added to my list of meds when hypertension got worse. It has worked well in combination with Losartan. I was told to take an extra one with tachycardia (fast heart rate) and a-fib. Haven't had to do that yet, but will if needed. No bad side effects after a couple of years."

"I take 100 mg twice a day with no issues since I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. Before, I was taking Coreg, and my resting heartbeat was always 43, now, with this medicine, it's 45 to 50, and my cardiologist says all is fine. I have a pacemaker and defibrillator."

"I have been taking 190 mg Betaloc for a few years, and the main problem is the fatigue that I get. I have permanent A-Fib from a failed Maze treatment while having my aortic valve replaced 9 years ago. I asked my GP if I could lower the dose to 142.5 mg daily. I have been doing this now for about 3 weeks, but now I am having strong bouts of A-Fib, so I have decided to go back to 190 mg again. What are your thoughts on this matter?"

"Got Afib. I am 57 years old. Thankful for metoprolol, it helped me a lot. I took 50 mg a day and am now down to 25 mg. It feels like I could be without it, but I'll take my time to get rid of it completely."

"I’m otherwise healthy, and this drug works great to control my aFib. No episodes since starting it 3 months ago. It also keeps my bpm 60-70. But it comes with side effects. I have mild shortness of breath, feel tired all the time, have palpitations, and get dizzy when standing up too fast. I’m still able to exercise. Hoping for an ablation soon and to get off the meds."

"It has worked very well for me to stop afib enough to remain calm, improve shortness of breath, and return to sinus rhythm in 2-4 hrs. Once it took 5 hrs. Usually some great relief in 1/2 hr. Making the afib less intense and with a lower heart rate."
