For Birth Control "Mid 30s, no kids, one partner. It was recommended by my doc to be on BC because I have some medical conditions, and a pregnancy would do more harm than good. The worst part of the insertion was also the shortest part of the insertion. A lot of cramping, and felt like I needed to go to the bathroom. Took 2 ibuprofen prior, and took 2 more afterward. Luckily, I had my husband with me since I wasn't sure how I was going to feel, and for support. Got dizzy and carsick during the ride home. Slept for the rest of the day. Just got it 2 days ago, so can't speak for long-term effects. No bleeding, occasional cramping, bloating, and still feel like needing to go to the bathroom. In general, I don't usually get side effects from medications. Bodies react differently to everything, so don't scare yourself first."

For Birth Control "I am 22 years old and a college student who works full time. I was on the pill (high dosage) for 2 years, took a year off, and then started Kyleena. I've gained 30-40 lbs since starting Kyleena, and this has only been 1 year. There were no extra cravings, but I did swell up (like water weight and bloating). My friends said before working out (no, I didn't lose weight) that I reminded them of a blow-up doll. The menstrual cycle would correlate with how much swelling/bloating I experienced. I know what you're probably thinking, 'Birth control studies have shown there's no direct correlation to weight gain.' But riddle me this, if the hormone (that causes symptoms) is in the birth control and issues didn't begin until you started, doesn't that mean that the issue comes from the birth control? Don't get me started on the excessive out-of-the-blue cramps too! I have scheduled my appointment to have mine removed."

For Birth Control "Got my Kyleena inserted a month and a half ago, and I have to say it is worth it. Insertion didn’t hurt too bad, just felt like period cramps because my gynecologist froze my cervix before inserting the Kyleena. I found that getting my period for the first time after having it inserted hurt more. My cramps hurt worse, but were nothing unbearable. It is nice to not have to worry about taking birth control every day. It has definitely given me worse headaches, though, and has caused some pretty consistent bloating, which I’m hoping goes away with time. All in all, I really do enjoy this birth control method as it has minimal side effects, is easy to maintain, and works efficiently."

For Birth Control "It's been one full week. My cramps are on and off. They're very mild and only call for a hot bath or a 500 mg Tylenol. Much less severe than my normal period cramps. I'm still a bit bloated, but the spotting stopped after the 2nd day. During intercourse, my fiancé said he couldn't feel the strings and that if he had, it wouldn't bug him since the strings are soft (they've softened since the insertion). I am due in 3 weeks for my check to be sure everything is in place. So far, I haven't had any issues, but I will update once my period comes to give you my personal experience."

For Birth Control "IUDs are a wonderful option for many women. Unfortunately, something about it just did not react well with my body. Around months 4-7, the bloating, weight gain, and mood swings, especially irritability, started to take over. I noticed a 7-pound weight gain around 4 months and suspected that the IUD was the culprit... but I was also going through some depression in earlier months, which I thought maybe caused it instead. I was so easily irritated, and the bloating and rapid weight gain were affecting me so much that I didn't even want my boyfriend to touch me. I gained another 6 pounds in 1 month-13 pounds total. The bloating got worse, and I definitely felt myself gaining more weight. My doctor gave her 'medical opinion,' but I was not myself, so I got it removed. It's my 2nd day without, and I am having little to no bloating, which feels amazing, and I definitely see an improvement in my mood and energy already. Great birth control for women who don't experience the negatives like I did..."

For Birth Control "It's been two weeks since my insertion. First off, I have not had any babies and was not on my period. I was really scared of getting the IUD because of how much people say it hurts, but the only part that hurt for me was the needle they insert for freezing your uterus (my pap hurt more than my insertion!). Mind you, I went to a women's clinic, where the doctors insert IUDs all day long (definitely recommend finding something like that for insertion!). I had intense cramping for about an hour or two afterward, but then it subsided. I had a lot of pressure and some bloating for about 24-48 hours, which I didn't mind much since I get intense cramps from my periods. All in all, I'm very happy with it. No acne, no weight gain, no mood swings!"

For Birth Control "I've had Kyleena since late June. I had it inserted during the fourth day of my period. The first week after - heavy cramping, heavy bleeding, dizziness, fatigue. The second week was the same. About three weeks in, the bloating and fatigue lightened up, but I kept bleeding. Went back to the doc at week four because I was concerned it had shifted - I was still bleeding heavily! Ultrasound confirmed everything okay. I've continued bleeding every day since. I have started to feel my body go back to a normal cycle. The bleeding went to light spotting about two weeks ago, and I had a period - longer, but light. Now back to light spotting... Overall, I think it's a great option for 5 years of worry-free birth control. But the initial 3 months are intense!"

For Birth Control "I got Kyleena inserted in October of 2017, and I’ve been miserable ever since. The doc keeps telling me to wait it out until after a year. Insertion was painful, but that was to be expected. I had cramping and spotting for 6 months. My libido is non-existent, it hurts every time I have sex. I have gained 30 pounds, but my weight is just now starting to go down. I have nipple soreness, bloating, and it had no effect on my acne because, guess what, I still have it. The only good thing about it is I’m not pregnant... but lol, I think Kyleena reduces that risk even more because I never want to have sex. I do not recommend."

For Birth Control "I'm on my 5th year of the Kyleena. I'm having it removed tomorrow. Insertion hurt so bad. I believe I was given Naproxen (Aleve) prior to the appointment, but it didn't help. The doctor actually laughed at me and scolded me, asking me how I'd ever have children if I couldn't even handle this. Um, excuse me, but isn't the point of getting the IUD to NOT have children? Anyway, it hurt, and I recall feeling like I was being split in half. I think I cramped for a few days afterward. Since insertion: chronic pelvic pain (due to tight pelvic floor muscles, could be due to the IUD as it started a month after), a cyst rupture, surgery to test for endometriosis (due to the pelvic floor pain), bloating, really light, short periods (yay), and possibly mood swings. I'm not entirely sure if the mood swings are caused by the IUD, but I guess I'll find out after this week. 4/10. Never had pelvic floor pain prior to the insertion of the IUD. Now my uterus is the bane of my existence."

For Birth Control "I have had the IUD in for 4 months. For the first three months, I had severe stomach pains that were debilitating (I was on vacation). I still today have stomach pains and have to take at least 2 pain relievers a day. I have bled heavily from the start (I never had long or heavy periods in my life). I have noticed my weight has gone up and is so hard to lose weight. I am constantly bloated, and my boobs have grown two cup sizes. I have been so tired for the past 4 months (I have gotten used to this fatigue) and in terrible moods. Booked in for removal."

For Birth Control "I'm 20, and for me, it's not it. I've never been on any kind of birth control but decided to try it to see if it would help with my periods. The insertion process wasn't bad for me at all, it was just a tiny cramp, but nothing that compares to any period cramp. I've had this IUD for 4 months, and at first, I didn't find anything to be a problem until I got my first period after. My periods were bad before, but the IUD made it so much worse, my cramping was 10x what it was before, and my cramps have always been bad even before. I used to only bleed for 4 days, now, I bleed for 8. I get spotting at random times, especially after sex. Hormonally, I feel like I'm PMSing every day, I can't keep my emotions in check to save my life. I'm mean and sensitive. I used to be so confident about my body and how I look, now, not so much. I break out all over my chin and back, never have had a problem with acne. I'm always bloated! Thank god I get it out in 2 weeks!"

For Birth Control "I am 18. Got mine a year ago. Still having a period daily, every once in a while, I’ll spot or have one random day where I don’t bleed. My doctor recommended Kyleena for my endometriosis pain and birth control, but so far it has made cramps 10x worse, and now it happens 24/7. I randomly get dizzy, nauseous, irritable, anxious, lots of new acne that I haven’t had since I was 14, always tired and bloated, and hopefully getting it out soon. Currently having a pregnancy scare as well. Stopped bleeding after a trip with my husband and haven’t bled since (first time since I got it put in, and it’s been about two weeks now). Testing next week and will update when I do. Insertion for me was very painful, and the doctor accidentally cut my cervix with the device, so she couldn’t put it in. Had to come back after a few days and take more uterine softeners. They had to put me under for it. Just my experience, so take it how you will."

For Birth Control "Getting the IUD put in was extremely painful. No medication was given prior. They cut the strings too short, I believe, or they flipped upward. I'm in discomfort 3 years later. The GYNO informed me the IUD was slightly poking into the muscle. They said I have to schedule to come back and have it removed. They tried multiple ways, including a hook, but were unable to retrieve it. I was about to cry in the office, it was EXTREMELY PAINFUL. Afterward, I was very emotional and bled all day. The doctor informed me I’d have to wait to have surgery done under anesthesia. Now I’m waiting to have surgery, I’m very scared. Very unpleasant experience. Gained around 20 lbs. Retaining water, bloating, abdominal pain, and about 20 cysts. Never again. Please do your own research, this is not medical advice or guidance. Just a bad personal experience."

For Birth Control "I have been on the pill since I was 17 (currently 24) and was excited to try a new birth control method that I could just forget about. I initially wanted the Mirena, but apparently, it was too big for me, so I got the Kyleena. The insertion was not bad, it was uncomfortable and painful, but manageable. I heard that being on your period and having sex before the insertion was helpful, so I had both! I only had two ibuprofen before. The cramping went away by the following morning, and I had little to no spotting. In the past few weeks, I have noticed a significant emotional shift in that I am having spiraling thoughts and have intense mood fluctuation. I also have some puffiness/bloating around my tummy constantly but have not had weight gain. The mood changes are concerning, and I have booked an appointment with my doctor to consider having the IUD removed."

For Birth Control "5-month update: inserted Nov 23rd, '18. Posted a review on here previously. The insertion process was one of the most painful experiences in my life. I had horrible cramping to the point of keeling over and crying for weeks after. I still get random cramping on and off throughout the week, though not as bad. I have gained approximately 10 lbs with no explanation since insertion and cannot seem to shake it no matter what I do. I feel bloated and constipated almost every day with no change in diet, and I've gone up a size in clothing, and activity level and calories seem to have no effect whatsoever. My boyfriend believes it has stabilized my mood, and I've had no issues with acne, but I can't deal with the weight gain. No periods since insertion other than slight spotting in the first few weeks. For some, this is fine, but I'd rather take the size 2. That combined with the random cramping - I will likely have it removed during my annual in the upcoming months and return to the pill or NuvaRing."

For Birth Control "I’ve had my Kyleena for 6 months. I would say that my experience is mostly good. I can’t tell if the insertion is painful because I got mine at the same time as an abortion, so I was under mild anesthesia. For the week after, I had small cramps and spotting for around 7 to 10 days. My periods (which used to be very painful and around 5 days) are now only spotting for 2 days and very small cramps 1 or 2 days before or during the actual period. Overall, I would say I am very satisfied. The only 2 downsides: mood swings and bloating. The mood swings I can live with, but the bloating really annoys me. Not to the point of getting it removed, though. I’ve had trouble with my weight a good part of my life, and when I’m bloated (usually 3 days per cycle), I “feel” (I don’t weigh myself) like I’ve gained 20 pounds. And usually, the mood swings are around the same times, so it really gets to me and makes me feel the worst. But my overall experience is good."

For Birth Control "I’m 5’1, 25, 100 lbs. I’ve had my Kyleena IUD for almost 2 years now, and it is fine. I had Skyla before and switched to Kyleena because it lasts longer. I’ve gained no weight, have no trouble maintaining my weight (but I walk 3 miles/day and also run daily). My skin is the same, and overall don’t have any major complaints in terms of impact on my appearance. I’m sure it works differently for everyone. The downside is that my PMS is a lot worse now, lasts 5-7 days with pretty bad bloating and breast pain, which is really frustrating. I have sex regularly and haven’t gotten pregnant, though, so it’s worth it! This birth control certainly isn’t for everyone, but as a person who reacted horribly to bc pills, finding IUDs was a lifesaver. Don’t let all of the negative reviews scare you."

For Birth Control "So I had the Kyleena inserted on January 13th (a little under 2 weeks ago)... Insertion wasn’t the most comfortable but bearable and very quick. Zero cramping, minimal bloating, skin okay so far. I had no bleeding until my period, which came on the day it was due (Saturday the 9th). I had 3 days of spotting, 3 days of very light bleeding, and then spotting again and STILL spotting!!! I’m usually a 4-day period person, and I’ve now essentially been on my period for 10 days so far, and it’s really getting me down! If this continues much longer, I may get that it’s not worth the emotional effect. I feel disgusting."

For Birth Control "I had the Mirena IUD inserted after giving birth to my son in 2012. I had it for 5 years, and it caused a little discomfort (I was cramping with it a lot), but it was otherwise pleasant. I took it out because the cramps increased after sex. I needed to get back on something because my periods were painful and long. I went with Kyleena this time around, and it is THE WORST THING EVER. Facial hair! Cramp! Spotting! Severe constipation! Severe acne! Gas! Bloating! WEIGHT GAIN!!!! Breast soreness! My vagina was itching! It is terrible! My doctor suggested about 6 months ago I give it a full year to see if my body will adjust, and it hasn't. KYLEENA MUST GO!"

For Birth Control "I've had it for 9 months now. Had some cramping in the beginning, but not bad. My biggest problem is weight gain and bloating. My boobs have gone up 1 cup size, and my lower stomach looks so bloated it's like a balloon. I cramp probably 4 times a week, but haven't had any type of bleeding at all. I want to get it checked out because the bloating is so bad, but I'm currently without insurance."

For Birth Control "I have had Kyleena for about 4 weeks now. When it was inserted, it did hurt more than I expected, but I powered through the pain. I had taken Advil an hour prior, it didn’t really seem to help, lol. The rest of the day, I laid in bed with cramping and bleeding. I have been on my period since that day, but it had been light with no cramps up until a week ago, where my period got heavier and I started having severe cramps. I am not sure what is going on, and pain meds seem not to be doing a whole lot for me. I’m eating a lot, and I am constantly bloated. I am optimistic about these negative things going away, but if they don’t, I will have it removed."

For Birth Control "Finishing up my 6th month with Kyleena. My doctor prescribed me ibuprofen and a cervix softener prior to insertion. Highly recommend you ask the doctor for those. I had zero pain during insertion, just slight uncomfortable pressure and mild cramps after. My period is now very, very light. Hoping it stops altogether soon as I heard that is a possibility with this IUD. Partner has no issue feeling the strings. No PMS issues. The only side effects I have experienced have been a bit of weight gain/bloating (not enough to be a deal breaker though) and more oily hair that began the 4th month. This has been annoying, but a low-maintenance, effective birth control is worth having to wash my hair a bit more often. Will update at 1 year."

For Birth Control "Let’s just start with I got the Kyleena IUD put in to help with fibroids, which it immediately helped with. I definitely recommend it for anyone who is considering it for that. I got the IUD put in 6/17, and of course, insertion was painful for the first time ever having my cervix opened. The first few weeks were okay besides the cramping, but then, after the hormones decreased, came months of spotting. It lightened, but after 6 months, I just had light long periods (7/9 days) and never really had to use anything more than a regular tampon 1 or 2 days out of it. But then a year hit, and the hormones decreased again. I think I might just be hormone sensitive, but for the past 3 months, my boobs swelled up for 2 weeks, nipples super sore, extremely bloated, and bad cramps. Oh, not to mention the now 2 weeks+ of spotting every month. I’m just hoping I get adjusted to this hormone change soon. I have gained 20 lbs since I got it, but mostly in my boobs and butt. It did not help clear up my adult acne either."

For Birth Control "I had Kyleena inserted over 2 weeks ago. The pain was excruciating, yes. I took ibuprofen 600 mg before the procedure, and I really think it helped alleviate the pain after. For 7-10 days after, I had bad intermittent cramps. I usually get horrible, horrible cramps with periods, so this was nothing in comparison. Since then, Kyleena has been great, and no problems, no infections, and no pain. I hate hormonal birth control due to side effects (acne, weight gain, bloating, depression). But with Kyleena, it's been fantastic. Very happy I got it!"

For Birth Control "Follow-up post: I have had Kyleena for just over a month now, and I would say my experience has been more good than bad. I did have cramping a week before and during the time of my next period, with relief once my period had concluded. It was like clockwork, starting at noon and ending at three every day. I do have spotting every day still, but it can easily be managed with the thinnest pad one can buy. PMS symptoms were either slightly heightened or new since I started, such as breast tenderness and bloating, but no emotional side effects so far. My only complaint is I still have bad cramping when I exercise, specifically if any exercise involves the stomach region. I will update again after a month or so. Very content so far."
