For Birth Control "I am debating getting Kyleena removed. I am 26 years old. I got Kyleena in October 2018. Three months in - I have severe constipation, and I cannot help but believe it is from Kyleena. I had to go to the emergency room, it was so bad. I was full of poop right up to my rib cage. I had to get it pumped out with hydro colon therapy, but two weeks later and basically only eating raw fruit and vegetables - the severe constipation is back. The past three months, I have had bloating, constipation, extreme cramps, and gas unlike I have ever had before (it basically just comes out as a bunch of air). Because of all of this, I do not feel like myself, and it has made me depressed. I find my sex drive has been lower because I have become self-conscious about my body. These are things I have never experienced before. I give Kyleena a 5 because it is effective in preventing pregnancy, which is my ultimate goal - but at the risk of no longer feeling like myself? I am unsure if it is worth it."

For Birth Control "I got my Kyleena about a month ago, and I’m not going to lie, the insertion hurt like hell, but it wasn’t the worst thing ever. The insertion was quick. I spotted for the day and cramped 2 times after the insertion. I didn’t have any cramps or spotting for 3 days straight. THEN the symptoms hit, and oh my gosh, are these the worst cramps ever! It got so bad to the point where my ibuprofen isn’t even working anymore. I’ve spotted nonstop since, and that’s been crappy as well. My mood seems fine. I don’t know if it’s because I have more free time now that school is out or if the IUD is the cause, but my sex drive seems to have increased. I’ve been with my boyfriend for a while, so he doesn’t mind it. The only other symptom I’m getting is bloating, but other than that, I haven’t dealt with anything else. Getting an IUD just depends on how YOUR body will react."

For Birth Control "I've had my IUD for only about 4.5 weeks now. I'm 34, never had children, and had been on birth control pills for years. Both the fitting and the insertion were equally brutal. The intense pain subsided shortly after, but the first few days I was extremely sore and achy. Since then, I have had random cramping almost every day, with lower back and abdominal pain radiating down my thighs and legs, sometimes so intense I keel over and start crying. I've also had dizzy spells, bloating, constipation, and a few cystic pimples, but no full-on breakouts. I am due for my period this week but have not had ANY bleeding since insertion. I go for an ultrasound to check the positioning next week. If the cramping doesn't improve within the next few months, I might have it removed. The pill never gave me this much trouble, except for random spotting. Everyone is different, but based on the insertion process alone, I'm not sure I'd recommend it to others. I'll report back after some more time. Good luck, ladies!"

For Birth Control "I got the Kyleena IUD 3 days ago and it honestly was not as bad as so many of these reviews made it out to be. I wouldn't consider myself to have a high pain tolerance, and I felt like it was essentially what everyone says - a decent amount of pressure and two intense period cramps that each last for like maybe 10 seconds each (if that). It went by super quickly! I almost canceled my appointment because I was so nervous, but I'm so glad I didn't. All BCP that I've tried have either given me depression or made me super anxious/angry all the time, so I'm hopeful that this won't happen with Kyleena. As far as recovery goes, I'd say the first day I just felt like I had a bad period, the second day I got a lot better, but still felt crampy, and now I just have this full/bloated feeling with super mild cramps. I will update this post as time goes on!"

For Birth Control "I had the Kyleena inserted in 2017 and had it removed this week at the 5-year mark. Positives: There's truly no substitute for the peace of mind and level of protection IUDs provide. My periods have been lighter. Negatives: I had an extraordinarily painful insertion and recovery process, experiencing a couple of months of cramps, abdominal pain, and leg numbness, all of which have continued on and off for 5 years. My sex drive dropped sharply around the 2-year mark, and sex has been intensely painful since insertion. I began getting hormonal acne and developed bloating and IBS-like symptoms that have disrupted my schedule and daily life. My pre-IUD painful periods and PMS symptoms changed to something closer to PMDD around the 4-year mark, including intrusive thoughts of suicide, hopelessness, and paranoia. Earlier this year I went to the ER with a partially ruptured complex ovarian cyst, which took a little over two months to resolve, and I believe I have another on the same side."

For Birth Control "The insert went well... I went to the doctor because I had bad endometriosis, and he recommended Kyleena. I only have acne as my side effect and bloating sometimes. For birth control, it is perfect, but other conditions 50% okay... still suffering from endometriosis but not as badly as before."

For Birth Control "I have now had my Kyleena for a full month. The Dr. gave me 2 pills to dilate me the night before, and honestly, that was worse than the insertion. I was sick all night and had horrible cramps, but the Dr. said that is normal if you have not had kids because of how shut the cervix is. The insertion wasn't my favorite summer activity, but it definitely was bearable. I'd say 2 minutes total with 3 sharp, deep pangs of pain lasting about 15 seconds each. Spotted for about 1 week and was severely bloated, constipated, and crampy. After that 1st week, everything went away and I have been feeling 100%. I feel great. I exercise regularly without pain. Minimal spotting. Minimal cramping only around my period, which was very light. Very pleased so far!"

For Birth Control "I hope this is helpful! I am 20 years old and got my IUD placed in July 2018. The insertion was quick and felt like a quick cramp. On a scale from 1 to 10, it hurt like a 3. However, the following hours after and the next couple of days were horrible. Probably the worst pain I've ever felt in my life. I didn’t work for 2 days and laid in bed mostly. I’ve been on the Kyleena for about 8 months, and I am getting it removed this Friday. While I’ve been on it, I gained 20 lbs. Before the IUD, I was very good at maintaining my weight, but now I feel bloated after almost every meal. The only good things about it were that it prevents pregnancy and minimizes my periods. I would not recommend."

For Birth Control "I have had Kyleena for 4 months now. I was debating between getting a copper IUD or hormonal because my body reacts badly to hormones in the past. I first got the copper IUD, and it immediately expelled (I am 24 and have never had children). It was extremely painful, and the cramps were unbearable. My doctor recommended getting Kyleena in May 2019, and I've really liked my experience so far. I bled for about 2 to 3 weeks after insertion, and now I get my period every month around the same time. I barely have any cramps, and the insertion was nothing compared to the copper IUD/expulsion. The only downfall to Kyleena is that I noticed some face acne, which I've never had, and my breasts get very sore and bloated throughout the month. Other than that, I love it! Best decision :)"

For Birth Control "I got my Kyleena about 4 months ago, and I love it! It hurt like hell to get inserted, but my boyfriend was with me and holding my hand the whole time, which really helped! I also think it’s worth mentioning that I forgot to take Advil beforehand, which is probably why it was so bad for me. My symptoms have mostly died down now, but I had decreased libido, some bloating, brown discharge (still have that), and spotting. But let me tell you, the peace of mind is incredible! I used to be constantly stressed and worried about getting pregnant, but now it’s hardly on my mind. I also want to mention that I tried birth control pills for a bit before this, and it was a horrible experience. I was depressed and had absolutely no libido and was breaking out, so I was nervous to try this because it is hormonal, but because it’s localized, it didn’t have any of those effects. This has been a great product for me, but remember, everyone’s body will react differently!"

For Birth Control "I am 40 and have teenagers. I do not want more children, so the IUD seemed perfect. I did well on the pill, but the IUD seemed flawless. Unfortunately, it was very painful getting it put in. They measured me and said I was a perfect size for it. The next few months, I became totally bloated and very emotional. My breasts hurt, and I had two-week periods. After six months, I started bleeding brown and throwing up. My doctor said the IUD had migrated out of place and it had to be removed. Even though I paid $1,300 cash for it because my insurance did not cover it, I was relieved to have it removed. Within two days, I lost a ton of bloat and a couple of lbs. So sad it did not work out for me. I was really hopeful."

For Birth Control "Well, I got the Kyleena inserted back in June, and I haven't gotten pregnant yet, so there's that. Probably because I'm still bleeding! I've been bloated and cramping. I spoke with my nurse, she advised me to just wait out the 90 days so my body can get used to it. Here I am, just shy of the 90 days, and still bleeding, so I don't think this is going to work for me. I did have the Mirena for 5 years with no issues. I think it may be time to try another alternative."

For Birth Control "So I had Paragard for 6 years. I didn't want hormones because I'm super sensitive to them. I couldn't take the pain anymore with that one, I have bad cramps to begin with, and it made it worse. My doc convinced me to try Kyleena. I was nervous because I don't like hormones. Well, it turns out I was right, and I'm downright miserable. I've had it for 7 months. I've gained 12 lbs, and I'm an avid workout person who watches what they eat, and it's almost impossible to lose weight. I feel bloated all the time. I have almost no libido, which was never an issue. Vaginal dryness drives me insane, which also wasn't an issue. And for me, I have the worst armpit and breast pain I've ever experienced. It won't end until my period comes, so I'm just in pain all month practically. It hurts to put deodorant on and put a bra on. I can't take it anymore, so I will have it removed. I still have bad cramps, so the hormones didn't help that and only gave me more issues."

For Birth Control "I've only had Kyleena for 3 days, but like a few other ladies, I read the reviews before, and I was terrified! I questioned my doctor's suggestion for Kyleena several times after reading this and asked if maybe I should just do a pill, because this sounded like a mess! I can only speak to the insertion at this point, and honestly, it wasn't bad. Because of the position of my cervix, the speculum was the worst part! The insertion was so fast, it was barely a pinch. It was suggested that I have this done on my cycle. I didn't feel any noticeable cramps after. The following day, I had 1 cramp that was pretty intense, but it subsided quickly, and I haven't felt anything since. I feel like I was a little bloated the 1st and 2nd day, but that's no longer an issue either. I just wanted to share, like others have said, everyone has a different experience. Some are good, some are bad. But if you've decided this is for you, don't go into it with fear. Just see how it goes and judge for yourself."

For Birth Control "Got the Kyleena IUD 3 days ago. Went in not knowing a thing. No research on side effects. I just thought you get it done, it hurts like bad cramps when put in, and then you're good to go. It wasn't like that. It was very painful having it inserted. That pain was surmounted by the intense, never-ending stabbing cramp pain that grew exponentially afterward. No waves of relief. I have serious cramps on my period. I've never felt anything so painful in my life. Day 2 was still painful but bearable, like regular severe period cramps. I was extremely bloated and constipated. Gas cramps added to the pain. Today it felt far better, with cramps every so often. I wouldn't wish the pain I went through on anyone. I don't know if it's worth going through that pain again for me, personally. I've never been pregnant and accepted the regular BC pill side effects without question. It is the pain that I went through that almost had me going back to have it removed. I wish I had been warned that this intense kind of pain could occur before I did it."

For Birth Control "I got Kyleena in November of 2019 and recently got it removed in March of 2021. Overall, the experience was not too bad. Of course, the insertion was painful, and I bled lightly for 3 continuous months, but then my periods went away. At first notice, I didn’t appear to have any symptoms; however, after a while, they started kicking in. I first got chronic BV and a lack of sex drive. I also noticed how I started to bloat more, and my face and body started to get less toned, no matter how healthy I ate and how much I worked out. It’s been around 2 weeks since I got it removed, and almost all of my symptoms went away quite instantly. Overall, I honestly would recommend Kyleena just because everyone has different experiences with it, and I’m glad I tried it to know it’s not right for me. I hope this helps some people!"

For Birth Control "I got Kyleena 2 weeks ago, and it’s been pretty miserable so far. Insertion was the worst pain I’ve ever experienced. The cramps from insertion lasted a couple of days. I’ve been very bloated and have painful cramps that come in waves. I’m also experiencing some constipation and loss of appetite. Some back pain, vaginal discomfort, and discharge with spotting on and off as well. I’m fatigued and can’t do a lot of exercise. If these symptoms don’t clear up, I will consider removal. I’ll write another review in a month or so for an update. Wish me luck :( ...UPDATE: My pain got worse the day after writing this. Severe contraction-like cramps. I went to emergency and had them remove it. Turns out the IUD was causing an infection. This may work for some women, but obviously my body wanted the thing out. I’m feeling better after removal. Too bad. I really wanted it to work for me."

For Birth Control "I had the Kyleena IUD for a total of 3 months, and it wrecked havoc with my body. Previously, I had the copper IUD for 6 years, but due to heavy periods caused by the copper IUD, I had it removed. Insertion of the Kyleena was actually fine and not so painful. Just a little pinch. But for the next 3 months, I suffered horrendous bloating. My weight has always remained the same, even after having two kids, but almost immediately, I started gaining weight. I eventually cut down to just one meal a day and gave up almost everything sweet to see if this would help, but I kept on gaining weight. I had a constant brown discharge every day for 3 months, but it was the bloating that affected me the most. I had it removed almost one week ago. I had heavy bleeding for 4 days after removal. The bleeding has now stopped today, and the bloating has already significantly reduced. Today is the first day after 3 months that I feel like myself again. Sadly, it didn’t work for me."

For Birth Control "During insertion, the speculum/measuring definitely felt like a mild cramp, but the actual insertion of the IUD was about a 6/10 on the pain scale (did not take painkillers). For the rest of the day, I felt moderate to severe cramps and bloating. I was also spotting. The spotting continued for about three to four weeks, improving in color and amount week by week. The cramping stopped after maybe 3-4 days, improving drastically each day. I am on my 3rd month of the Kyleena now, and everything has been great. I experience some bleeding sometimes during sex with my partner, and he can feel the strings of the Kyleena (though he says that it does not hurt him). Make sure to check if the strings are still in place at least once a month. My periods are gradually getting lighter, and the flow is so much better than it used to be (as someone who used to have quite severe periods). Cramps are very manageable and are usually only evident on Day 2 of my period."

For Birth Control "I had Kyleena inserted around August 2018, the insertion only hurt for a second, and then it was over! It felt like a bad cramp, but I was completely fine after. I bled for a few weeks and experienced bloating (OBGYN said it was my uterus adjusting to the IUD), and then my periods became regular. I never experienced breast tenderness or sharp cramps while on my period until I had the IUD, but it wasn’t unbearable. Up until last month and this month, I have not gotten a period, but I am still getting PMS symptoms around the time I would normally be getting my period. My acne is only bad whenever these symptoms occur. Initially, I was worried these were pregnancy symptoms, so I checked to feel my IUD strings to assure it was still in place, and everything seems fine (I recently had bloodwork done, so I definitely am not pregnant). Overall, I love Kyleena, and it’s so nice not having to worry about taking a pill every day! The first few weeks of bleeding and cramping sucked, but it was worth it."

For Birth Control "I can't speak of the insertion process because I was under anesthesia for a different procedure when I had the device placed. The first month and a half, I was in almost constant excruciating pain from the cramps (November 2018). My doctor suggested keeping it in, as it sometimes takes a while for your body to get used to it. The constant pain stopped mid-December, but my periods continue to be 17 days long. Additionally, it never removed my excruciating cramps during my periods, nor did it actually lessen the pain in any way. I still get bloated and nauseous as well. Originally, it had at least stopped the bleeding, but now that's coming back as of the past two months. I'd have it removed, but I'm honestly afraid of being incapacitated for another month. At least my birth control helps with my acne and can sometimes give me some control as to when I get my period."

For Birth Control "I've had my Kyleena since I was 17 (two years). The insertion was uncomfortable and the pain winded me, I cried and vomited, but after I got home and rested for a day, with light cramping, the pain wasn't so bad. I experienced spotting and intense cramping for the next 4-5 months, then nothing, no acne or weight gain for about a year. Lately, I've experienced some intense cramping and some bloating. Honestly, I'm just glad I don't have to worry about taking a pill every day, but sometimes the pain keeps me up all night and makes me really, really sick."

For Birth Control "After 3 kids, I decided it was time for reliable contraception. I was told by my doctor that Kyleena is the 'least' hormonal contraception. Inserting went okay. That was in the beginning of February 2019. Today is 07/08/19. Here I list some of the changes my body has seen. The most frustrating part is the weight just won't come off. I regret the IUD because I should have waited until I got all my extra weight off. Before getting the Kyleena, I had lost 22 lbs in one month! Now, nothing. I work out, eat moderately healthy, but nothing is happening. My belly is bloated all the time. Like being 5 months pregnant. My bras don't fit anymore, and I always feel pregnant. The side effects are not really nice either. I have lower back pain as I do with regular periods, but I never had sore or painful breasts unless I was pregnant. I am constantly angry. Just so annoyed at everything. I yell more, scream more, and just have no patience at all. I will have it removed."

For Birth Control "I have had Kyleena for 9 months now and love it! I am a 25-year-old woman who has never been pregnant. I have always had consistent and regular periods. I have tried oral contraceptives, and they made me bloated/break out. When my Kyleena was inserted, the pain was excruciating. I took 600 mg of ibuprofen beforehand, but it didn’t touch the pain. The pain was so intense that when I made it to my car, I actually threw up, and I never throw up! I experienced some intense cramping for a couple of days afterward. My BF and I have sex at least 3 times a week, and I never worry about pregnancy. When I was on the pill, I would get super paranoid about him coming inside me, but I haven’t worried about that for a second since Kyleena! The first 6-ish months I still had a regular period, but it only lasted about 3-4 days. Now I get a tiny bit of discharge and still have breast pain, but not enough bleeding to even use a pad or tampon!"

For Birth Control "I was really nervous about getting an IUD, but it’s been good overall. I haven’t experienced any acne or weight gain, though I feel bloated in my tummy often. Insertion wasn’t bad at all, just like a big cramp. I was on my period when I had it inserted, which I heard was better because of the slight cervical dilation during menstruation. I’ve had it for about 4 months now, and I have experienced very painful period cramps and emotional fluctuations, though they’ve lessened each month."
