"Currently on day 4 of 7 of my ciprofloxacin regimen for a kidney infection. I haven't had a nightmare of an experience by any means, but this is definitely one nasty drug. Within 20 minutes of ingesting, I experience quite intense abdominal cramping on my left, and it's worse than my kidney pain. This lasts about 30 minutes to an hour until my muscles relax again, so I take an Advil in preparation for it, which helps. I've also been experiencing heavy night sweats. It's a little hard to determine what is the result of my infection and what is a side effect of the medication, but I'm quite confident about these two in particular. I take the pill with about 500 milliliters to 1 liter of water. Food doesn't seem to make much of a difference for me. The restrictions for dairy also make the morning scheduling super annoying as yogurt and granola are my go-tos. All that said, my kidney infection pain is all but gone now, and I feel like I'm on the road to recovery, so it is effective; it's just a pain the way it goes about it."

"I was put on Cipro for an acute kidney infection (not UTI, actual Pylephronitis (sp)) 6 days ago, due to being a 7-day course in which I was told I would start feeling better by the 3rd day. I am on day 6, and I am worse off than before starting this antibiotic. My fever is fluctuating between 99-102.5. I feel like I've been hit by a train-I actually feel worse than when I had swine flu in '09!-and I feel like I'm being punched in the kidneys (former MMA, been punched in the kidneys before, know what it feels like) constantly. Would not recommend Cipro for a kidney infection."

"I was given these from the hospital for a severe kidney infection. The dosage was two 500 mg for 5 days. Worst tablets I've ever been on, they made me want to self-detonate. They have even given me jaundice, which is a 1 in 1,000 chance. They were very fast-acting towards the kidney and kidney pain, which is good, but side effects were very, very nasty. Side effects I experienced: - severe nausea - dry mouth - vomiting - dizziness - abdominal pain - headache - muscle aches - confusion - extreme fatigue - fever and cold sweats - jaundice (yellowing of skin, eyes, and urine). I've been off the tablets for about 48 hours now (thank God), but now need time to be treated for jaundice. The only good thing I can say about these is that they are very fast-acting. I wouldn't recommend these at all, even if you are desperate, please ask for something else."

Ciprofloxacin "Cipro didn't work at all for my kidney infection. I might be resistant because I had taken it and then discontinued it because it added to the psychosis that meningitis gave me. It is an awful medication."

"I cannot work anymore. The pain in my feet and especially my heel is excruciating. I get dizzy spells. I have constant headaches. I get dizzy. My vision is cloudy on occasions. I have a flash of light in the right corner of my eye when I look far right, then start to look left. I can no longer work. I can't hardly walk. I used to do heavy labor type jobs, like carrying 80-pound bags of salt. My life is pretty much gone. I feel worthless because I can no longer work. God have mercy on the people who gave me this medicine."

"I have been taking these tablets since late Tuesday. I'm on a 500mg, 10-day cycle for a chronic kidney infection. The hospital sent me away with the tablets and advised that if I was no better within 48 hours, I was to go straight to A&E. I have taken 4 tablets now. I was feeling sick and vomiting before I started to take these tablets, so I can't blame that on the tablet now. I can honestly say the only problems I am having with this tablet are the dreams, they are so awful, vivid, and terrifying. It's hard to try and get back to sleep when you know what you're gonna face on the other side, but all I want to do is sleep and rest. Overall, I genuinely think the tablets are doing their job. I shall let you know if I end up in the hospital this evening."

"I'm on Cipro now. This is day 2, and I'm on 500 mg for 12 days. I've used this antibiotic in the past. I myself get UTIs, I pass stones at least 2 a year. Well, it's worked okay for the UTI in the past, but it's not doing anything as far as this infection. I've had to be hospitalized twice for severe kidney and bladder infections, so I know damn well what that pain feels like. The doctor didn't help at all. I feel like they were just trying to get me out of there quick. They did no pelvic exam. He didn't even press on the stomach or tap my back. I waited until I couldn't bear the pain while peeing. So, I already knew what I had. I went up there for antibiotics and to see how bad it is because I cannot afford to be in the hospital. I'm going straight back there in a day or two if this doesn't clear up. So, it's good for bladder infections but not kidney infections."

"Using ciprofloxacin now for 6 days. Previous antibiotics didn't clear UTI, which is now a kidney infection. Only side effects are extreme lethargy and a touch of constipation. Infection seems to be cleared, but will take my day 7 meds as advised."

"I am on my third dose as of last night. I am on two tablets, one in the morning and one at night, at 500 mg, and I try to eat a meal before and after I take it. I recently got a bladder infection that got into my kidneys 2 days ago, and so far, I have tingly feelings in my lower back on both sides of my kidneys. It helped the second day somewhat for the pain of peeing and my kidneys, definitely not throwing up anymore, but I wake up drenched in sweat. Today is my fourth day, it is 12 am, and I also noticed my dreams are extremely vivid, and I'm pretty exhausted and can't get out of bed."

"I would not recommend this drug for people like myself that have an allergic reaction to penicillin and sulfa. This is about all I can take for a kidney infection. The side effects aren’t too bad for me and I don’t really get dizzy from it. I just make sure I rest a lot and drink lots of water. My dreams do tend to be a little scary on it, but if that’s what it takes to get rid of a serious infection, then I’ll do it. The infection scares me more than side effects. Everyone’s body reacts differently, though!"

"I would strongly caution you about taking this drug for anything. While it is widely prescribed, the side effects are not obvious on the leaflet you get from the pharmacy. I spoke to GPs, a nurse, and a pharmacist, and they didn’t know about the risks of the drug-induced neuropathy I started experiencing after taking just two pills. I was experiencing pins and needles, numbness in my leg and foot. It was scary, and I am a 31-year-old female who has never had a reaction to antibiotics except a small rash. The FDA warns this side effect is 50% more likely with this class of drugs! There are so many other options of antibiotics out there. At the first sign of trouble, I stopped this drug immediately and took bromelain, magnesium, B6, and was switched to amoxicillin. The side effects started to regress two days after stopping. Please be careful!"

"I have taken this drug for 14 days. I’m not well. My tummy is so sensitive and my taste buds are bitter. I had two blood works on my kidneys. 6/7 when I left the hospital, my creatinine was 1.0. 6/15 my creatinine was 1.05. 7/13 my creatinine is 1.12. My doctor told me that I have to wait two more weeks for another blood work. Two more weeks wait and see??? Please, anyone help me!!!"

"Currently taking medication for bladder infection (2x a day for 7 days). I was having vaginal soreness and urgency and pelvic pain. I’m on day 4 now, and those symptoms are now gone, but I’m having some back pain or kidney pain on my left side and a sore throat. I never had any side effects from medication before."

"I used ciprofloxacin last year for an infection last year. I would not say it helped. Added to this, suddenly I started experiencing severe pain in the rotator cuff, left arm. The pain was so severe I could not sleep. Months of therapy followed. Slight improvement. I recently was once again prescribed ciprofloxacin for a UTI. I took one pill and broke out in huge red flat blotches all over my body. I stopped taking all meds and went to the doctor. The doctor told me to try again and take no other meds to see if it was indeed the ciprofloxacin, as by the next day the blotches had disappeared. Once again, after taking another ciprofloxacin, I broke out in huge red flat blotches, and my eyes started to itch, and my throat started closing up. I stopped taking it immediately. By the following day, red blotches had disappeared almost entirely. Since then, the severe pain in my rotator cuff is back. This after taking only two ciprofloxacin tablets."

"I was diagnosed with a kidney infection. I was given Cipro 500 mg twice daily. On the first day after taking the drugs, the pain on my side vanished. Then, on the third day, I started feeling slight pain in my back and side, but I am still taking the drugs. I don't know if my condition has worsened."

"I was given a ten-day/twice-a-day prescription of ciprofloxacin, which has caused chronic tendinitis. I have ruptured a tendon in the first digit of my index finger, and have periodic episodes of inflammatory tendinitis; plantar, Achilles, tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, and the tarsals in hands and feet. No fun. I would think one who has a sensitive disposition to pharmaceuticals would not want this drug. Yes, it may have saved my life, but I believe I would have healed from pyelonephritis with an antibiotic I could already tolerate."

"I doubt that people on here will know that I am writing to them, but all of them need to seek holistic treatment for their chronic UTI/kidney problems quickly. There is an underlying problem causing urinary infections, possibly an autoimmune disease. I know I have had similar issues. I found a holistic chiropractor who has a better understanding of how the body all works together, so a rash on your arm might mean a depleted immunity. There are numerous treatments for UTIs that are available at natural sites, such as silver. Mainstream medicine will never find the cause of your problems. It will only treat your symptoms with dangerous drugs."

Ciprofloxacin "After 3 doses of Cipro for a kidney infection, I had short-term memory loss, couldn’t recall the days of the medication, I had increased anxiety within 30 minutes of ingestion, depression. HORRIBLE DRUG!"
