It is important to note that this medication numbs the throat and should be used with caution. In my case, I experienced a stiff and numb neck after taking it, which could have been potentially lethal if I wasn't fully oriented. Moreover, the medication did not alleviate my cough and actually made it worse. I have found that many physicians are hesitant to prescribe medications containing narcotics due to concerns about misuse. As a result, I have resorted to using old medication like Tessalon Perles to manage my symptoms. Overall, if I could rate this medication, I would give it a zero due to its ineffectiveness and potential dangers."

"I was prescribed this medication at the ER after a coughing fit so severe I almost passed out. I took my narcotic cough syrup before bed. I woke up about 6 hours later coughing, so I took the Tessalon Perles. My coughing stopped, but I got every side effect. My head was pounding so bad I couldn't sit or stand for more than a few minutes. I was very disappointed because I needed something to get me through the day. This medication worked great on my cough, but I felt worse in every other perspective."

"I first used Tessalon Perles early in 2017 when I had a 'cold' with a cough that would not go away. After 2 rounds of antibiotics (for secondary infections) and 2 bottles of Tussionex, my doctor prescribed Tessalon Perles. I did not expect them to do much for me. WRONG. I had almost instantaneous relief. I have since had a second URI with the 2 rounds of antibiotics, etc. And now I have a chronic cough. It wakes me up, keeps me from singing in church, etc., etc. Having a new Rx for the Tessalon Perles has made all the difference in my quality of life."

"I have been using the Tessalon Perles for 5 days every 8 hours and feel no difference. I still have quite the cough. I have had a chest X-ray that was insignificant. I am going to call my PCP and see if I can take more than 1 every 8 hours. I am on decreasing dosages of prednisone."

"Wow. I usually make do with OTC stuff, but cough post-chills phase of a bug I caught was very painful and persistent - Robitussin DM wasn't touching it. Took these and felt better within an hour - and got first good night's sleep in days. A bit of a weird 'numby' side effect, but not that bad."

"These have worked amazingly for me when nothing else did for chest cough. You can also take them with a ton of other cough suppressants without any danger of overlapping side effects. See a lot of people complaining these give no relief, but I must say Mucinex DM and Dayquil Severe by themselves don't do much for me at all. Add this on top and it's a major change."

"I despise this medication. Doctors constantly prescribe it, and it does nothing for a cough. Mostly, I spend money and still cough. Save your cash. Go buy Dollar Tree cough syrup. It doesn't work either, but it is cheaper."

"The worst choice of medication to treat a cold. I had a cold return after 6/7 weeks just to be given this same medication again. My cough is worse, and the headache from the pressure is a nightmare. Constant coughing at night. This is day 3 of the second go-round with this cold, and I'm not taking it anymore. It does nothing for the sinus drainage, and it just makes the cough worse, not better. Will not make another appointment for a different antibiotic, so over the counter here I come! This is a waste for a $200 visit."

"I was recently prescribed Benzonatate for asthmatic nonproductive cough associated with vasomotor rhinitis. Simply put, they work with minimal side effects. Moderate to marked reduction in frequency and duration of coughing spasms. Plus, I can get some much-needed rest, perhaps due to both cough reduction and a very mild sedative effect."

"I started this a few days ago, after I was told by the clinic that it would work well for me because it was a 'non-narcotic.' However, I found that it only provides temporary relief. It does nothing to help fight the infection causing the cough. I was told to stop taking other OTC medicines, but this really didn't do anything."

"I'm in college, and I went to a party after a while of not going out, so I was submerged in so many germs all at once, where I ended up getting sick and having this nasty cough. I've had it for about a week now, and it is so extremely painful. It started with a simple sore throat, but now it's too painful to talk or even breathe and sleep. I wake up every hour or so, coughing up mucus, and I never actually fall into a deep sleep, so I'm exhausted all the time. The other day, I was coughing so hard I threw up my entire dinner. Anyway, a doctor prescribed me this recently, so I took it three times in a day, as told to do so, and it has not done anything for me. I don't know how some people are saying it worked in 15 minutes for them. I wish. I don’t know what to do, I need to get rid of this cough. I can't be in class coughing up a lung, especially when COVID is still present. I don't like this medication, I had high hopes, but based on the other reviews here, it just seems like a scam because it isn't working for most."

"Got some type of respiratory infection with awful post nasal drip that has been hanging around for 3 weeks. The worst was the cough that was making my throat raw and keeping me up every night. Finally this week, I was prescribed Tessalon Perles 100mg/3x a day, along with an antibiotic for the infection. After one dose, I saw immediate improvement. Coughing was almost eliminated, and my throat started feeling better immediately. The only side effect for me was sleepiness, which actually was welcome since I was sorely in need of rest. These actually worked better for me than Tussinex, which I had been prescribed and took several years ago for bronchitis. I also prefer to avoid any opioid meds whenever possible. I had never heard of Tessalon Perles, but they have worked really well, for which I am very thankful."

"The true Tessalon Perles work very well. I have not had the same luck with the generic. As a matter of fact, I have had no relief from my cough with the generic. Unfortunately, it's all but impossible to get the actual Tessalon Perles anymore unless you have them special ordered and are willing to pay a fortune."

"My grandson, 15, has had a horrible cough for 3 weeks now. 10 days on antibiotics, then prescribed this rubbish, which I was hoping they didn't call in. I've had them before, and they do not work. The doctor watched him cough till he would gag but done other tests, saying he has to return to school wearing a mask all day. If I had known what they were, I wouldn't have paid or picked them up. They are worthless."

"I received these with antibiotics for a horrible bronchitis. They didn’t stop the cough spasms at all, now I have Bromphen cough syrup PSE.DM, cough is much better. Prednisone was prescribed with this to alleviate pneumonia developed in the right lung during the use of benzonatate. I agree that Mucinex DM works better, I was up all night with cough spasms for three nights on benzonatate."
