"An upper respiratory infection sent me to an urgent care center, where 100 mg of Tessalon Perles was prescribed. This lowest dosage relaxed the lung muscles, so I didn't suffer from the coughing spasms, and while I still had to sleep sitting up, I was more comfortable. The prescription was for 3 times a day, but I only took it twice daily. A follow-up visit to my primary care doctor resulted in a prescription for 200 mg twice daily, and that dosage was too much for me. I had a scary episode resembling a heart attack and stopped the medication immediately. Heart pounding, chest muscles tightened front and back, profuse sweating, dizziness, one episode of vomiting. I consumed large quantities of water to flush the drug out of my system and will never take it again."

"I was given this prescription due to a 3-week-long virus, excessive coughing-day and night. It does stop the cough, but I was allergic to it. I thought my lip blew up from the spicy chicken wings the night before. I kept taking it. It poisoned my system. I had no idea why my virus was now nauseating my stomach and twice I would vomit because of it. The side effects are obviously different on everyone! PLEASE read the labels and medical staff-PLEASE tell your patients that things can happen and they need to react to EVERY reaction that is NOT normal or feels good. My lip blew up. It looked like Botox. I drank all kinds of cold beverages to get the swelling down. I had NO idea the path it would take was to make me sicker."

"I have had the Tessalon Perle prescribed for me twice now in the past 6 mos. Neither time has it worked for my cough. I have COPD and get bronchitis at least twice a year. This by itself will NOT treat bronchitis, you need an antibiotic. In the past, I've had a doctor at Urgent Care prescribe a cough syrup with codeine in it because my cough (especially at night when laying down) was so bad I wasn't sleeping, and abdominal muscles ached from coughing so much. That was a Godsend and is usually the only thing that helps with this type of cough. I have told my doctor to not waste time calling in a script for the Perle anymore. It's a waste of money."

"I was prescribed this for a consistent cough, which resulted in lots of mucus. It did not work. Finally, I decided to take 2. My cough stopped almost immediately - thankfully, NO mucus. Today, I have enjoyed my best day in months. I'm waiting 24 hours to take my dosage of 2 instead of one, as prescribed. This condition had become embarrassing and tiring. I became desperate."

"Started taking this after 3 weeks of coughing so intense that I would gag and gasp and have to run to the restroom to pee. Horrible. This was the only thing that lessened the coughing, but my doctor insisted I take it with a decongestant. I still cough, but it has been fewer and less intense."

"I was diagnosed last night with influenza and acute bronchitis. My coughing fits have been terrible and make me feel like I can't breathe. Once I start coughing, it's a long time and a severe headache before I can stop. The doctor prescribed Tessalon Perles for me, and I had no idea what it would do. This is the first time I have felt relief in many days! I feel its effect about 30 minutes after taking it... my cough becomes looser, my sinuses and airway become drier (not so full of mucus), and I lose the urge to cough. And I can sleep! Win."

"Works like a charm. I take it only when I get an uncontrollable dry, heaving, gagging, sore ribs, diaphragm, forget about sleeping kind of cough if I have an URI, occurs about once every several years. If you're experiencing side effects, try taking the lowest dose possible and make sure you're hydrated."

"I was really sick for a week and went in to see my doctor for a cough that was uncontrollable. He first prescribed amoxicillin. That did not help with my cough. Then I was prescribed Tessalon Perles, and it seemed to work. I was having itchiness all over my body, also welts. I then realized it was the Tessalon Perles that was doing it. I stopped taking them. Now I don't itch but still have a cough."

"I was prescribed these “cough pearls” for bronchitis, and my new doctor said to continue taking Robitussin DM along with the pearls every 6 hours. That was 3 weeks ago, and I’ve taken them religiously, but still coughing my head off. Last year, when I had bronchitis, I was prescribed cough medicine with hydrocodone, which helped immediately. I’m going back to the doctor and ask for the same cough medicine. I don’t think the cough pearls and Robitussin are very effective with my bronchitis."

"As with most medication, there are limitations for which it works. I was prescribed this when I had pertussis (whooping cough), about 3 weeks in, and wish I'd had it sooner. If you've never had it, it's also known as the '100-day cough' and is absolutely the most horrible cough ever. It's nonproductive, just random deep coughing whenever it wants, for however long it wants, day or night. I had ruptured blood vessels in my eyes from coughing so hard. There is no treatment for pertussis other than antibiotics to make you not contagious. I'm struggling to imagine not having these while the disease ran its course. I'd give it 20 out of 10 if possible."

"Whenever I have a cough related to an upper respiratory infection, I ask my doctor for Tessalon Perles. Over the years, my family has had great success with this drug. It reduces coughing fairly fast for a pill and lasts much longer than OTC cough medicines. None of us has experienced any side effect when taking it."

"The best medicine I've taken for a cough. Told I found out that I have bronchitis. The coughing literally made my head and chest hurt. I took my first pill around 5 pm and stopped coughing minutes later. Just had my first cough, so it lasted from about 5:30 pm - 2:15 am. It's still not as bad as it was before 5. My biggest issue is the nightmares I just had. They were vivid and unlike any dream I've had before. It was promoted me to seek out experiences from others."

"I had a bronchitis cough that left my entire body in pain. It seriously felt as though I had worked out and was dealing with residual body aches. When my doc realized the severity, he prescribed Tessalon. Initially, it felt like my cough was getting worse, but successive doses definitely helped to quiet me. This was far more effective than any narcotic-containing cough serum. It left me pretty sleepy, but I needed the rest anyway."

"Have had a chronic cough for 8 months. Would wake up every night after being asleep for 4 or 5 hours with a terrible hacking cough that would last for several minutes. At first, x-ray for any lung disease, then given medication by the doctor to treat possible GERD. No help. Then medication for asthma, no help. Then medication for allergies, no help. Then was given Benzonatate. Coughing stopped almost immediately. Have used it for over a month now and have only woken once with a cough, but it was not near as violent as my other coughing spells. Gentle cough and fell back asleep immediately. I've read some of these other reviews that it wasn't helpful, but for me, it was great."

"I can relate to the reviews 'I kept the house awake all night ... couldn't finish a sentence.' This medicine didn't seem to work for me either...for the first 4-5 days, then a tiny improvement each day. The coughs were completely unproductive until day 10 or 12. (productive = phlegm) Improvement was slight but still noticeable each day. Today is day 21 and I still cough a bit, lots of phlegm. I run out of medicine tomorrow and have notified the doc that I'm still coughing a bit (nothing like the cafeteria-clearing jags that had people fleeing for their health... 'He might be contagious!' I wish the doc had warned me that it might not seem to work for a while."

"Was just rx'd these for bronchitis with a dry, hacking cough that just started to break up. I am barely coughing other than to clear my throat now and cough up stuff. The continuous hack is gone! Great for daytime use to avoid cough syrup with codeine."

"I had the flu and was prescribed to take these pills for a bad cough. It seemed like every time I took one, my cough got worse. I stopped taking them and went to over-the-counter cough syrup. Worked much better!"

"The first time the pearls were prescribed, I thought they were a miracle drug. Suppressed my cough and no side effects. Every spring and fall, I get a chest cold. So, I got a prescription 3 days ago. My cough is just as bad as it was 4 days ago, and I am in constant gastric distress. I'm disappointed that they didn't work this time, and the upset tummy and dizziness have turned me off. I'm going back to Mucinex and Robitussin."

"I was up all night coughing, my airways were raw. I was afraid to throw a rib out. Took one gel capsule at 11:30 am, am almost cough-free still at 2:30 pm. No side effects, maybe a bit drowsy, but I slept so poorly that I don't know if the pill caused the sleepiness. I am very pleased with this prescription. I still feel miserable, but at least am not racked with a dry cough, which is exhausting. I can breathe. I'm sure it does not cure the cough, but it allows the body to heal. The constant hacking is dreadful and irritating to the airways."

"Was prescribed Tessalon Perles following E.R. visit for bronchospasm/bronchitis. It works well for controlling the cough. However, it caused G.I. upset after using it for a few days. Therefore, I stopped taking it. It worked well for one problem but caused another. I will be taking Mucinex today and hope for relief without having to spend so much time in the bathroom! Thank you."

"I have been prescribed these on three different occasions, and they do not work for me at all. I am not sure why they are ineffective, but it seems to me someone needs to return to the drawing board on this one."

"Ok, I am an EMS/fire/law enforcement person. I am medically retired from this profession. I drive a commercial vehicle for a living now. I am also a heart patient/diabetic type 2. I get to drive all over the U.S. and Canada. I have read numerous statements that it doesn't work or does work. No, it may not work for all. I started Monday taking this. It has slowed my hacking down quite a bit. I have not had any side effects yet. I'm about to have triple bypass done. I have tried over-the-counter, I found only one bottle of medication I could legally use that worked. This seems to work for me. I will comment at least twice more. I will use it up to my surgery date and comment to all on how good it was or bad. Everyone is different with meds."

"As a retired nurse who is 73 years old, I was recently prescribed medication by a doctor who was filling in for my regular physician. Unfortunately, this medication proved to be ineffective and even dangerous for certain populations, such as seniors and those with chronic diseases like Parkinson's, which I have. It is important to note that this medication numbs the throat and should be used with caution. In my case, I experienced a stiff and numb neck after taking it, which could have been potentially lethal if I wasn't fully oriented. Moreover, the medication did not alleviate my cough and actually made it worse. I have found that many physicians are hesitant to prescribe medications containing narcotics due to concerns about misuse. As a result, I have resorted to using old medication like Tessalon Perles to manage my symptoms. Overall, if I could rate this medication, I would give it a zero due to its ineffectiveness and potential dangers."

"I got prescribed this along with an antibiotic back in 2019 for pneumonia. Let me just say it didn't work at all for my cough and possibly made it worse. I ended up just taking Mucinex and that stopped the coughing, I'd recommend you do the same! If I could've rated this 0, I would've because it's a bogus drug!"

"I use these particular for a dry cough I get. They work best when I just have a nagging cough that is nonproductive and my coughing creates irritation that produces more coughing. They stop the cycle. If I have a bad cough from a cold with full lungs, my doctor gives me something different."
