For Cough "As many others have mentioned, this medication seems to do more harm than good. After taking it, within 20 minutes or so, I am coughing constantly to the point of gagging and throwing up. My son-in-law was also prescribed this and had a terrible rash all over his body, and it also made him cough more. Since it is prescribed so frequently, there needs to be more emphasis from practitioners about swallowing with a glass of water and not letting it dissolve in your mouth at all. Otherwise, it can numb your tongue and swallowing mechanism. Hope it works for some people, but not for anyone I've known so far."

For Cough "I was diagnosed with bronchitis yesterday and prescribed benzonatate for my cough. I had been coughing a little through the day, and it would become constant from dinner time till I went to bed. But once asleep, I was fine and slept through the night. Well, after taking this medicine yesterday and last night, my cough was worse than before. I had nonstop coughing from about 9 pm to 4 am this morning. Needless to say, I will not take any more of this medicine!"

For Cough "Dr. prescribed these pills to me because he couldn’t quite figure out what is wrong with me. Not sure if my cough is from a viral infection or not. My coughing, before these pills, had me up for the past 2 nights. Took 1 of these pills and my coughing got worse - ladies, you know the stop, cross (your legs), and cough. I mean my coughing is so bad that I am in agony from a headache. So I thought it was a coincidence. I’ve never taken these pills before, then just took another pill, thinking I would nip this cough before it starts full force again, and to my surprise, I have not been able to stop coughing since the pill kicked in. I wish I could undo what I did by taking this pill. Next time, well, there won’t be a next time. I’m totally done with these pills!!"

For Cough "My doctor prescribed me benzonatate 100 mg for a nagging cough. This medication did nothing for me. After 3 days of medication, I continued to cough a lot, I couldn't sleep, and my throat and chest continued to hurt. A waste of money."

For Cough "These pills almost killed me after 24 hours of taking them. My cough was three to four times worse. After those 24 hours, I was coughing constantly, non-stop. On the second day, I actually could not breathe and went back to urgent care. I needed a breathing treatment, and the doctor prescribed a different pill, and within 48 hours, coughing had greatly decreased. Wouldn't suggest using this drug."

For Cough "Wonderful med! Severe dry cough that got worse. Had a coughing fit that lasted for 6 hours and scared the life out of me. Kaiser prescribed. Took about an hour for coughing to calm down after taking. First night I coughed quite a bit, but on the next 100 mg dose, cough got better. Do not be discouraged if it does not work right away. Give it a few doses. I also added a humidifier to my bedroom, and my coughs were more productive. That coupled with this medicine, and I am happy to report after 4 days I am much better. This medicine is my savior. I was up 5 nights straight coughing before I took this."

For Cough "I have taken this medicine twice in the last year. Both times it has worked as it's supposed to. Within 30 minutes of taking two 100 mg pearls, my cough is gone for 8-9 hours. I still cough once in a while, but it's not a nonstop cough. This med helps me sleep all through the night."

Benzonatate for Cough "The worst choice of medication to treat a cold. I had a cold return after 6/7 weeks just to be given this same medication again. My cough is worse, and the headache from the pressure is a nightmare. Constant coughing at night. This is day 3 of the second go-round with this cold, and I'm not taking it anymore. It does nothing for the sinus drainage, and it just makes the cough worse, not better. Will not make another appointment for a different antibiotic, so over the counter here I come! This is a waste for a $200 visit."

For Cough "I currently have bronchitis, and my doctor prescribed benzonatate to treat my horrendous cough. At first, I was frustrated because it wasn’t treating my cough. I then realized that I usually don’t drink as much water as I should, and the cough after taking it felt really dry. So I downed a full glass of water, and now I’m hardly coughing at all! I’m uncertain, but I suppose you have to be hydrated for benzonatate to work properly."

For Cough "This medicine helped on the first dose, it actually helped my cough. Not sure what happened after that, but every dose after that aggravated my cough. I have not slept in 3 days. Have been taking this pill the last 2 days and wish I would have seen these reviews sooner to correlate. This pill has made my cough worse and can't stop coughing!"

Benzonatate for Cough "I'm in college, and I went to a party after a while of not going out, so I was submerged in so many germs all at once, where I ended up getting sick and having this nasty cough. I've had it for about a week now, and it is so extremely painful. It started with a simple sore throat, but now it's too painful to talk or even breathe and sleep. I wake up every hour or so, coughing up mucus, and I never actually fall into a deep sleep, so I'm exhausted all the time. The other day, I was coughing so hard I threw up my entire dinner. Anyway, a doctor prescribed me this recently, so I took it three times in a day, as told to do so, and it has not done anything for me. I don't know how some people are saying it worked in 15 minutes for them. I wish. I don’t know what to do, I need to get rid of this cough. I can't be in class coughing up a lung, especially when COVID is still present. I don't like this medication, I had high hopes, but based on the other reviews here, it just seems like a scam because it isn't working for most."

Benzonatate for Cough "My sister loaned me a few of her Benzonatate while I was at her house, suffering from a cough. It worked very well. Now I am on antibiotics and have just gotten home from a 9-hour drive. This is day three, and I am hacking and hacking!!! Not working, so I added a 400 mg Guaifenesin to my regimen. Seems to be calming down finally, but the cough and congestion are still terrible. I will report back in 24 hours to see if the combination of the two works."

For Cough "This medicine does nothing for me. Went to the doctor after feeling sick for two weeks. I honestly feel like I cough more after taking this pill than I do when I skip it. I skipped my dosage last night, and I slept just fine with no coughing episodes. Took it this morning, and now I am coughing nonstop."

For Cough "Have had a coughing problem, went to the doctor, they sent me to get X-rays, then 3 minutes later I had the drug store call me saying they had a medicine for me. Well, I took this for the first day, felt like I was coughing worse. Then the second day, I took an antibiotic with this, and yet again, felt even worse and throwing up. Can't eat, coughing fits hit me out of the blue."

For Cough "Ok, so yeah, this last Saturday I woke up with a sore throat. Sunday, it turns into a bad cough (almost like bronchitis sounding) and Monday I woke up with a headache. I went to dialysis on Monday, and luckily my doctor was there. He listened to my lungs and said they sounded 'chunky.' He prescribed these pills to me, plus the antibiotic Doxycycline monohydrate. The Benzonatate pearl I took one earlier in the evening and then my second dose when I was going to bed. Still have that damn cough! After I finish this prescription, I'm not taking it anymore."

For Cough "Was prescribed 100 mg due to coughing from post-nasal drip from the flu virus. I only took it at bedtime, hoping it would help. It seemed to take 30 mins to kick in but only stopped 50% of the coughs. And two hours later, back to continuous tickle and coughs. At the end, no sleep, so why bother."

For Cough "I'm glad I wasn't the only one. This medication made me cough so much, I took it twice and I was done. My eye sockets hurt and my rib cage was bruised. Now I need antibiotics, and I've got a fever. I've been to the doctor twice, and now I'm embarrassed to go back."

For Cough "This medicine made me unable to breathe! I went to urgent care to appease my boyfriend. He hounded me about taking the meds they prescribed, even though I felt the intuitive urge not to. As soon as I took one, about 30 minutes later came a cough episode from hell, with my throat closing up. Thought maybe it was cold air. Took another one. Same thing. This time, chest tightness and burning. I went to another urgent care where they gave me a breathing treatment and a Z-pack for suspected bacterial bronchitis. I came home and told my man I think it was a side effect of the meds. He said let me take one, I've been coughing a little, let's see if it works for me. 30 minutes later, he had a migraine from hell and a fever. Don't take this trash!"

For Cough "I had a sore throat/flu. ER for 4 hrs! Positive for flu B. Prescribed this horrible drug to help my sore throat and to help me breathe better. Avoid this medication!! It’s 3:30 am, I can’t breathe well, this is no sleep. My sore throat is worse because I’m forced to breathe out of my mouth, it also is causing me to dry cough, which is way worse. I feel so much worse than when I went to the doctor! Avoid! Cannot wait for this to leave my system."

For Cough "Wish they had a zero rating. Influenza A with strep - when I was at the peak of being ill, I was praying for some help, but in the state of AZ, absolutely NO help in the opioid realm (all I would have needed was codeine cough syrup so I could sleep - not allowed). They instead give you these tiny pearls, which are absolutely worthless. Took one at dinner, 5:00 pm, it's now 9:32 pm, and I'm still coughing and retching, and I'm 8 days into the flu. So my guess, they never do work. What a joke."

For Cough "This is the worst, most useless drug I have ever been prescribed. I was diagnosed with pneumonia, and since I was taking two OTC cough medicines and (probably) too much Tylenol to top it off, I asked for a stronger cough medicine so I wouldn't be in pain and have to take so much. They prescribed me this. I took one, thinking I'd finally get some relief. I coughed more than ever. So I took a second one and coughed until I threw up the one thing I had been able to eat in days. Don't trust anyone who thinks this drug works, doctors or otherwise. It's not a decongestant or a suppressant, but it's supposed to numb something? What does that even mean?"
