For Osteoporosis "I started the alendronic acid 3 weeks ago, every Monday, 70 mg. Reluctantly, I’ve never had such excruciating pain, I feel like screaming at night. My pain was in my knee. Now it’s from my hip to my toes in agony. I was used to having days in pain 2/3 days, but nowhere near this agony. It took me 3 weeks of research to see it’s this medication...gone, I’m never taking it again."

For Osteoporosis "I had taken 6 doses of Fosamax. Every week, intense stomach pain. After the 6th dose, I woke up in the middle of the night with vertigo. Paramedics suggested going to the ER to rule out a stroke. I’ve ruled Fosamax out of my life. I subsequently saw an orthopedic doctor for another issue. I asked him what he thought about Fosamax and what happened to me. He said if I can’t tolerate it, stop it. Get back out and run/walk daily. It’s taken me 3 months to see that the stomach pain is subsiding. And back out there running up to 4 miles. Never felt better."

For Prevention of Osteoporosis "I was in pretty good shape, working out 3 to 4 days a week, never really having any bone problems. My doctor prescribed alendronate sodium for me, supposedly to prevent osteoporosis because I am taking prednisone. I took it twice as instructed. By that night, I felt some pains. Through the night, it got worse, but I figured it would settle down. OMG!! The next day, I felt like a can that was being crushed. I felt like I was going to be paralyzed from my right arm, through my hip, in my groin area, and my right shin and leg were numb and still are. My right side still hurts after 5 months or more. I spent a whole day in the emergency room where the same doctor was on duty. The doctor tried to say it seemed like it was my back nerve. Barely gave me anything for the pain. I stay in pain. I need an attorney about this because my insurance will not pay for an MRI. And though it's not as bad, I believe it has caused permanent damage."

For Osteoporosis "I am 55 and have osteoporosis (in my hip). My doctor pushed me to take alendronate (Fosamax), and within a few hours of taking ONE pill, I had the worst back pain I've ever experienced. The spasms lasted for hours. Over-the-counter pain meds did nothing. I had to get some prescription drugs. I don't want to try 'getting used' to this poison, and I refuse to take this again. So now my doctor is pushing Tylmos (daily injection... oh joy!), and I am so afraid to get long-term (and even short-term) nasty side effects. I believe the women who write these reviews-why don't the doctors? Reduction in fracture risk has not been shown, with current data on this drug, to even decrease significantly. At my wit's end and looking for non-medical solutions."

For Osteoporosis "I have osteoporosis in my left hip. My doctor prescribed alendronate. I took it for 4 weeks, the 2nd day I started having and continue to have hip, back, arm, and leg pains. I did not have any pain before the meds. I went back to the doctor, he said my side effects were not normal and to keep trying for 4 more weeks. I have not continued it, I see no reason to continue something that has only caused me intense pain. I have a very high tolerance for pain, but I hurt all the time now. I exercise by walking 2+ miles every day, it is helping, but if I miss a day, the pain is twice as bad again. I do not want to see or even think about what another 4 weeks would do to my body."

For Prevention of Osteoporosis "I started taking Alendronate 70 mg pill as prescribed. The next morning, I woke up with severe heartburn and belching. Then I started feeling the urge to vomit. All I could bring up was phlegm and a foamy liquid. I had a very bad, acidic taste in my mouth. I finally called my doctor and was told to stop taking the Alendronate and stay on a clear liquid diet. My joints hurt, my jawbone and teeth hurt, back pain, and severe indigestion. After 6 hours, I was still vomiting. My doctor prescribed Zofran to calm my stomach. I started feeling better, so I tried eating. It's been 5 days, and I'm still having indigestion after eating and pain in my feet and hands. I hope this nasty medicine is out of my system soon!"

For Prevention of Osteoporosis "I too took this drug to help strengthen my bones for just a little over a year. I thought it was great, it was gonna help. Well, it was just the opposite. I suffered a spontaneous fracture of my left femur. Never felt pain like that in my life. After inserting the 18-inch or more rod in the femur, I had to miss work to go to rehab for 3 weeks. This is one drug I will never recommend to anyone..."

Alendronate for Prevention of Osteoporosis "I have been taking Fosamax for almost 2 years. At first, it caused mild constipation, but I think if you take it as prescribed with plenty of water and avoid lying down for the full 30 minutes, as well as not eating breakfast or taking other medication until after that, you should be fine. My doctor prescribed it after I had surgery on a broken wrist due to a fall. She recommended I take it for 5 years."

For Prevention of Osteoporosis "I took my first dose yesterday, and my shoulders, rib cage, and teeth hurt all night long and still this morning. This prompted me to read reviews, and I don’t understand why this is prescribed after reading these reviews. My teeth felt so sensitive! I’m calling my doctor and not taking this again."

For Osteoporosis "The low dose (10 mg) a day raised my blood pressure sky-high, starting with the first day of use. My cardiologist recommended stopping the drug, and when I did, the B/P came down to normal the next day after stopping this drug."

For Prevention of Osteoporosis "I have been on alendronate for 3 months for osteopenia. I take 70 mg once a week. The first two weeks were fine, then the side effects came with a vengeance! Severe back pain that lasts for days, ever-present thigh pain, ear pain, dry mouth, eye pain, headaches, and an annoying fatigue. I plan on finishing up the third month, then calling my doctor. Though right now I don't think there's anything she can say that would convince me to continue taking this."

For Osteoporosis "I have been taking this medication for 4 years, in which Kaiser claims I had severe bone density. No issues whatsoever. I am retaking my bone density test today at another hospital (outside of Kaiser). I never broke a vital bone (except my big toe) when I was pregnant 48 years ago. I have had lots of falls, skiing, bowling, and falling down steps. I never broke any other bones. No side effects, no bone issues."

Alendronate for Osteoporosis "I have just taken my 4th weekly Fosamax pill. For 3 weeks, I have been exhausted. I am active, and now I don’t feel like doing things. I’m making myself walk. I have trouble sleeping. This is also new. My son looked at me yesterday and told me I look very tired. He’s right. I have also had the expected increased heartburn. I already have GERD and take medication for it. I don’t have any of the pain others describe. I wish there was another option. I have -2.9 in T3, T4."

For Osteoporosis "Take 70 mg once weekly, but have bloating and acid reflux, which I didn't make the connection to until reading the reviews. Recently have knee pain and stiffness and extremely tender bumps on my lower extremities. Not sure if I should continue taking this medication, but would like to see if my next bone scan improves."

For Osteoporosis "I was on alendronate for 2 years. I had one side effect: constipation. That's it, that's enough. No other side effects. I was irritated having to take a pill every week, early in the morning sitting up. My doctor suggested having an infusion once a year. I jumped on it. No side effects whatsoever. I've had 2 treatments. Did said medication help prevent fractures? No, lifting my bedroom window in May 2023 caused T11-12 vertebral fractures. X-rays showed I now have arthritis in my back. I NEVER had back pain until I fractured my vertebrae."

For Prevention of Osteoporosis "After my second stress fracture in a foot, I started taking this, 70 mg a week. Initially, I had some issues with restless legs, but that went away. After about 3 weeks, I started to get some bloating. The bloating is now worse than before I stopped eating gluten. I took it for 7 weeks, but now I'm done."

For Prevention of Osteoporosis "I've been taking Armidex for breast cancer for five years, and it caused osteopenia. I was prescribed generic Fosamax. I've been taking it for only a month, and each week I feel worse. Gas pain, chest pain, and I feel like I have a cold, but I don't. I just feel really bad. I hope to talk to the doctor soon, I'm so tired of feeling sick and tired every day."

For Prevention of Osteoporosis "I was taking this medication once a week for about 6 months and started experiencing nausea, heartburn, loss of energy, and immense pain in my upper body, neck, shoulders, upper arms, and ribcage. I stopped taking this medication. It has been 3 weeks since I took the last dose, and my neck and shoulders still hurt."

For Osteoporosis "My husband is on alendronate (Fosamax), expensive. Severe low back pain, bloating and gas, and ankle pain did not connect the dots. Pain goes on since last April, now I have asked him to stop. Since today, I have to wait and see. I myself have severe jaw pain, took Fosamax in those days. Heartburn continues, though I stopped a long time ago. I take chondroitin sodium. My bone reading is from osteoporosis to osteopenia now."

For Prevention of Osteoporosis "I have been taking alendronate for 13 weeks. My bones have started hurting so bad I can’t stand it. I started wondering if it was this medication, read the side effects and sure enough, that’s the problem. I won’t be taking another one, and hopefully this pain will go away. I would not recommend this drug."

The following day woke with jaw aching and all day teeth/gum soreness. I will not be taking a second dose. I wish I never took the first. Scary medicine."

I have had crashes on the bike, yet no broken bones. I think it helps. No aches or pains, but I didn't have them before either."
