"Got prescribed trimethoprim for 4 days for a UTI. First dose felt a little anxious but tried to ignore it. Did feel strange for a few hours, though. Second dose I didn’t feel anything till I fell asleep and woke up an hour or two later and was having weird visions/dreams. I don’t know what they were, but they kept waking me up, and when I tried to open my eyes, they were shaky, and I struggled to keep them open. Felt really paranoid, major dissociation, and just not myself. Decided to stop taking after day 2. The UTI symptoms have gone away, but it left me feeling off mentally, and hopefully, I will return back to my normal self soon. Avoid this drug if you struggle with mental health or are sensitive to medication."

"Prescribed 20 of these to take over a period of 10 days. Halfway through, symptoms of UTI have gone, BUT I have awful giddiness and nausea with these. After about 6 hours, it wears off, and I feel great till I swallow the next one. Dizziness means it’s affecting work and a headache/stiff neck. Hope I don’t have to take them again, as it makes me feel horrible!"

"Prescribed a 7-day course of this antibiotic, as the 3-day course of Nitrofurantoin did not work - don’t know if these have worked yet as I’m only halfway through. After the first tablet, I started to get a sore ‘thrush’ tongue, but this stopped when I took a probiotic at the same time as the tablets and a daily multivitamin (the chemist said this was okay). Other symptoms on day 2 - my legs/feet went numb and pins and needles. I went to bed, and luckily the symptoms had gone by the morning. Once my UTI has cleared, I’m going to look after myself, as eating rubbish and gaining lots of weight doesn’t help. Makes me more prone to UTIs to begin with."

"I took my first dose of trimethoprim around 6 pm last night. I started with a mild stomach ache about an hour after, and by 9 pm, I began to get blurred vision and feel very light-headed. At one point, I thought I was going to pass out, so I had to stop what I was doing and lay down. I was then getting heart palpitations and felt very anxious and was having scary thoughts that something bad was going to happen to me. I had to get my ex-partner round to come take care of my 2-year-old son as I didn’t feel capable of doing so! I was up several times in the night with a desperate urge to pee. I've woken up this morning still feeling slightly light-headed and confused, I can’t seem to think straight. My body is very achy, and I've had to come back to bed, hoping these side effects wear off soon. I refuse to take any more tablets, I’d much rather have the UTI. I really don’t know how this drug is legal."

"Was prescribed Alprim 300 mg, one each night for 5 nights. Took the first tablet. A headache developed fairly quickly. Headache didn't go away. Went to the bathroom. Felt nauseous and weak. On the way back to bed, my head started spinning, and I passed out. Next day, the doctor changed my prescription to Apo-Cephalexin. Have been taking these for 3 days with no headaches or dizziness. Have never had problems with antibiotics before this."

"Day 1, an hour after taking this, felt so tired, couldn’t move off the sofa. Carried on taking them twice a day, then the 2nd day, very fast heart rate even when resting, & started to get very shaky in my hands and just felt overwhelmed with anxiety and felt shaky inside. Managed 3 days of these and had to stop, had really bad insomnia last night before I took one, heart racing, anxious, this morning I feel totally out of it. Will never take these ever again!"

"Started trimethoprim course for UTI. 4 hours later, wanting to rip my skin off, the itching, unbearable, kept me awake all night. 2nd night, same thing, been awake, scratching the hives. My skin is sore, red, and angry. Allergic reaction? I am not too happy myself. But just want to get rid of the UTI."

"Prescribed trimethoprim for UTI one a day for 2 weeks. It has set off my migraines, and I had to stay in bed for 2 days. I can’t eat, feel like I’ve been punched in the stomach, nausea 24/7, rash all over body, plus itching. Worst experience of antibiotic ever !!"

"I was prescribed 100 mg of trimethoprim before bed for 6 months in hopes that it would help with my recurrent UTIs. It took a single dose to realize that this type of antibiotic wasn’t for me. I broke out in hives with a swollen face the next morning. I had never had an allergic reaction to drugs before. My arms and legs are extremely itchy. The only plus side is that despite having a sensitive stomach, it didn’t make me nauseous, nor did it give me bad stomach cramps."

"Given nitrofurantoin at the hospital. Bad reaction. A&E gave me trimethoprim 200 mg twice a day for 3 days. Fine first day and thought I was cured, just felt a bit sick, but today no energy, very, very nauseous, palpitations, and headache. Don't really want to take this for another day. If I could actually speak to my GP, it would be a miracle! Don't want to end back in A&E."

"I got these on the 19th of July at a dose of 200 mg twice a day for 7 days. The 1st day I got a headache, 2nd day no headache, but felt a bit sickly, 3rd day started to feel normal, 4th day I feel good. I'm taking ibuprofen as well to stop the inflammation and fever. I do feel better, as when I pee, it doesn’t burn, and I can have a cuppa and not run to the bog every minute. I finish the course on Sunday, the 25th of July 2021, I can’t wait, as I’m wanting a beer, lol. But I never got anxiety or anything like that."

"This medication was prescribed to me by a sexual health clinic for a severe UTI. It was completely ineffective, and I ended up at a different doctor 40 hours later with not only my down there burning and inflamed but now severe pain in my back, which I can only infer was due to my kidneys now also becoming infected. You want to know what that feels like, get into a resting state and ask someone to smash a hammer into your mid-back just below the waist on either side of the spine as hard as they can. It was so bad I was put on a higher dose of a more common antibiotic and prescribed to get an ultrasound."

"The worst ever. I was given a 3-day course of trimethoprim for a UTI. I already suffer from severe anxiety disorder and have a hiatus hernia. Also, getting over the 2nd dose of COVID. Took the 1st tablet yesterday and felt like my throat had swollen. It eventually settled. Took the 2nd pill at bedtime, then kept waking and feeling weird and having visions or dreams. Today, I haven't taken any more and feel terrible, like I've got a fever, bad anxiety, been crying, and shaking. I hope it comes out of my system soon. For sure, it should be given to anyone knowing my luck, the UTI will still be lingering because I didn't take the full course, but screw that. Can't deal with this overwhelming clammy heat in my body, no energy, and also no appetite."

"Had UTI symptoms and asked GP for a lab test to confirm UTI. GP prescribed Alprim medicine without waiting for the result, saying this medicine is specifically for UTI and better than my previous amoxicillin that worked well for me. 1st day, I felt fine but felt lethargic late afternoon. 2nd day I felt a bit better, so I thought the medicine was working. 3rd day, after an hour of taking it, I had a horrible headache and painful stiff neck! Half my face was numb, and I can feel thumping at the back of my eyes! Checked my BP, and it was so high, 165/105. I thought I had a mini-stroke. Rushed to ER, CT was all normal, and BP went down after they gave me painkillers. I had a gut feeling it was the antibiotics! Took the 4th tablet, and an hour later, I had a throbbing leg. 2 hours later, chills and hot flashes and headache again. Next day, I went straight to GP and asked to be taken off Alprim! Never again! Lab result showed no UTI!!!! Having gone through this, I would prefer UTI!"

"Was dubious about taking this after the reviews I’ve read, but took it for a UTI without any side effects at all. Although it didn’t work for my UTI, there were no bad effects at all, and I have to say I have terrible anxiety about medications after a bad reaction to metronidazole in the past."

"I was placed on it for an embedded UTI, it does get rid of my pain, but the side effects aren't worth it. I was fine the first month, then, the second month, things went downhill suddenly. When I'd have a BM, my heart rate would drop to 40 bpm, and I'd almost pass out. Then, for the next 24 hours, I'd feel miserable, vomit endlessly, and would question going to the ER or psych hospital because my anxiety was so bad and intrusive thoughts-absolutely terrifying. This happened to me four times, and I decided to stop the antibiotic. It's been almost a week since stopping, still have occasional all-over body tremors/shakes, nausea is hanging on, stomach is up and down, but no BP crashes, which is great. I just hope to feel better soon."

"I'm allergic to amoxicillin, so my GP prescribed this medication. I had nausea and a mild reaction for 3 days. I took the 4th tablet tonight. My face has swollen, rash on my hand, tummy tightness, severe nausea, and a terrible headache. I am flying overseas tomorrow, I need rest tonight."

"This was the only drug that I could take that was sensitive to the Klebsiella infection. I tried to take it many years ago and had side effects, so I was reluctant to try it again. I managed 7 days with nausea and tiredness. I finished them 2 days ago, feeling pleased with myself for persevering, and last night started with cramps in my stomach and diarrhea. I'm hoping it stops, or it will be another visit to the doctor."

"I've been on Trimethoprim since May 2024, twice a day, as well as Lymecycline. Only recently I've noticed hot flushes alternating with shivers. I'm not sure whether it's the Lymecycline, Trimethoprim, or chronic embedded UTI I've had since 2022. I got a UTI in 2013, became embedded, and was on long-term antibiotics till 2021. I then got better, and it came back in 2022. I really struggle to find a way out of this after I asked my private urologist if it'll ever fully go away, and the answer was 'we do not know.' I don't know if the symptoms I've got are from the Trimethoprim, but I've noticed when I'm on it, losing weight, chronic fatigue, headaches, dry mouth, body aches, and feeling like you have the flu constantly. I've got a lot of antibiotic resistance due, but I'd rather deal with this for the rest of my life rather than get sepsis again after having severe sepsis in 2016. It is either making the infection lay dormant or treating the infection. Time will tell."

"Caused serious necrotic reaction in genital area. After only 2 tablets, I started to feel intense tingling on my feet and thought it was chilblains. I took one further tablet but called the emergency doctor following that as the pain on going to urinate (often since I had cystitis) was so severe. Continued pain for 7 days, and I had to get penicillin and numbing ointment. I think I was lucky not to get a more serious infection, but it was like a 2nd degree burn. Now about to take anti-malarial, and they have the same rate side effect, and I am extremely nervous."

"My doctor prescribed me trimethoprim 200 mg for 7 days. I take one tablet in the morning, 3 hours later my stomach feels like it's turned upside down and I feel sick. Then at 4 pm, I take another, then 2 hours later a major headache and feeling sick, fever as well. But a couple of paracetamols sort it out. So now into day 4, and I've noticed pale shiny skin on my face. I will finish the 7 day course, but if I get a UTI again, then I will tell the doctor to put me on a different medication because these tablets have vile side effects. 9 out of 10 people will witness side effects and you have my sympathy."

"The odds of a severe allergy are wide but seem to always find their way to public forums. At this rate, we won’t step over the front door! Remember, most folks don’t walk back over problems once solved, so these reviews are always skewed towards the negative."

"Tried Trimethoprim last year, and it made me feel very nauseous. I was hesitant to take it again, however, this time, I have only had mild nausea, maybe a headache, and a sore jaw. I think every experience is different. It cleared up my UTI, so I’m happy."
