"Cleared up the uti BUT 5 weeks after taking the final tablet I'm still having side effects. First noticed that I had a sore throat and stiff neck after taking tablets for 5 days ( was given a seven day course) but did not make connection with taking antibiotics. Continued to take medication. I then developed sensitive scalp, neck pain got worse and on and off headaches plus shoulder/back pain. Felt awful. I was on holiday at the time and it seemed to ease after about a week. Reported to my GP on returning to the UK. Now 5 weeks later, on holidays again, neck pain, sore skin, head pains are all back. Hope this helps others. Not sure if I should seek medical attention or just hope problems go with time."

"I can see that I'm not alone in having a bad experience with this medication. While I can't say for sure whether it caused it, I have unfortunately suffered from some of the side effects listed, particularly those in the rare section. It's bizarre that these reactions are classified as rare, as many others seem to have suffered similar reactions, which clearly means they are not rare. My GP said that this was the most common reaction, yet there are all these reviews, which is confusing. After taking only two tablets, I had to call a medic because I thought I was seriously ill and was on the verge of collapsing due to some weird and freaky heart issues that seemed to be caused by the medication. It turned out that everything was mostly fine, and there was no damage, but I still felt anxious and had some freaky thoughts, like I had delirium or something. It's frustrating when you have a bad reaction, and they say it's anxiety when it's clearly something else or something more severe. It's been about a month or two since stopping and these effects are no longer apparent yet I still don't feel one hundred percent, it's hardly acceptable and I had a bad reaction."

"Had a UTI that turned into a kidney infection. I get chronic UTI’s and have become resistant to many antibiotics. Day three of 300mg, once a day, and my kidney infection cleared. Woo! I was left with a bladder infection still for the rest of the week. I started taking biofilm defence and the antibiotic started to do its job properly. I’m guessing biofilm is the cause of my chronic UTI’s. Feeling heaps better with this combo. Side effect is that I have extreme fatigue when I take this."

"Prescribed a 7 day course of 300mg twice a day. Felt OK on day 1 and 2 but day 3 was bad. Woke up jittery and shaky, bloated stomach and no appetite. Took the morning tablet and two hours later, I was having a panic attack, shaking with chills—nausea and bloating continued as well as the jittery and shaky feelings. My neck is stiff and uncomfortable also. It's now the evening on day 3 and I'm still shaky and have no appetite. I do take antidepressants and feel this has definitely not helped with my anxiety. I can't take many antibiotics either as I am sensitive, this is clearly another one to add to the list."

"Prescribed trimethoprim for UTI at walk-in clinic 4 days ago (after nearly 4 hours of sitting there). Not aware of any side effects and today the agony has ended. So for me it has worked, for which I am grateful, but certainly not a quick fix. Prescribed 200mg tablets twice a day for 7 days."

"Got 200mg to be taken twice daily for a UTI. Night one I started to vomit and zero energy with an indescribable migraine, I put it down to the UTI making me poorly. Over the next few days I started my muscles to cramp up massively my arms and legs would not move and the energy to move them was too much. It also caused unbelievable acid reflux, could not eat for a week literally zero appetite. Lost a lot of weight. The last two days the anxiety insomnia and panic attacks set in. This is when I checked on here for reviews and realised I wasn't the only one. It cleared the infection, but boy, what I put down over the week was something else, please find an alternative if you can."

"The urine tract infection is gone after two doses, but at a cost. Feeling nausea, vomiting, itchy rash on ear, slight temperature increase, a terrible headache. I stopped taking it after the second dose by doctors advice."

"Prescribed a three day course (one twice a day) for UTI over the phone. First day gave me a raging head and dizziness. The second day (Xmas eve) I felt nauseous all day. Decided to take my second dose with food. An hour later I started vomiting and violently shaking. This lasted a few hours when it seemed to subside (I'm 2 weeks post COVID so it's easy to blame COVID for everything, but this felt different). Xmas day morning the vomiting returned along with the violent shaking - no fever. Also, mind full of paranoid thoughts. I have never been so scared in my life. Rang 111, the doctor said it was a reaction to the trimethoprim and to stop taking them (I had). Prescribed anti-sickness tablets and advised to call back if symptoms worsened. Thankfully by boxing day I had recovered. I just can't believe these side effects aren't made common knowledge."

"Been on this antibiotic trimethoprim for three days and no side effects. I’m on a longer course of the same drug. I mainly get headaches and nausea from this stuff and a bit of gas too. Been struggling mentally, I’m not sure if that’s related. It’s clearing up the infection well enough though and having to deal with the pain in the butte of UTI symptoms for the past month, that’s good enough for me. I’m currently on day 3 of a 7 day course."

"Curses. Back on this absolutely rotten Alprim but I have no choice. Keflex was OK for the UTI but it seems the bug likes it and wants to holiday in my bladder. Alprim gives me the worst headache plus feeling quite sick. Grit the teeth and get on with it. Of course I will. Waiting now for the result of the urine test to make sure Alprim will work. Sorry for the grizzle. I really have nothing to moan about. Love to all."

"I was given ALPRIM for a bladder infection?? I was told to take in the evening with food, the first night I nearly went mad, I had nausea, itching, headache, pain in my lower legs and feet and then on day 2 a severe rash appeared and my feet both swelled they were also red raw I thought I must have had gout. Day 3 I took another tablet and the rash spread on both legs the pain was unbearable, moods were hard to live with. I have had infected cellulitis and that was painful but nothing like this so on day 4 the lower legs all blistered and I was in shocking pain so that was the end of Altrim never again and it is 3 weeks later and the legs are slowly coming back to normal still very red so please be aware of this medication and if you notice any changes in yourself stop it I will never take it again."

"I start of by telling you shouldn't read reviews. This is my second antibiotic for UTI. I was terrified of taking the two antibiotics as I had suffered a panic attacks on day 3 of trimethoprim, no side effects of yet so don't read reviews everyone is different."

"Was given a 3 day course of Trimethoprim 200mg twice a day. By day three although UTI pain had gone I started to feel so ill. Lethargic, achy, itchy, and nauseous and by day 5 I felt so nauseous I struggled to eat much at all. Now nearly a month later I still feel rough, have a very uncomfortable stomach and bowel and feel constantly nauseous, just generally unwell. I think this antibiotic has played havoc with my system and it is going to take a while for my body to fully recover. I won’t be having it again, I will ask for something different."

"I was prescribed Trimethoprim for urinary tract infection and found that I started spotting and had no clue why this was happening . I felt alarmed and tried to find out the reason but later after I got the urine test reports , I found that I did not have any infection and was taking this antibiotics for no reason so I was asked to discontinue the antibiotic . When I stopped the medicine , the spotting stopped. I wanted to share this information as there is no mention of this side effect for this medicine anywhere."

"Was prescribed a 7-day course (think curse would be a better word) for a suspected UTI. Day 3 started feeling a bit weird/off-kilter. Very anxious, tired, loss of appetite, bloating, chronic abdomen pain, but persevered as instructed by GP. Day 5, in bits !! Not sleeping, aching, anxiety borderline manic. By day 6 I honestly thought I was dying and was about to go to A&E. Finished the course but will NEVER use it again. Stay away from it, ask your GP for an alternative."

"I was prescribed trimethoprim by GP, I was a little confused as I was 25 week pregnant at the time. The drug can still be prescribed but during testing was observed to cause some problems????? Needless to say, the drug didn't work. I as usual ended up with thrush from the tablets and when I had a check up a week later I still have the infection. Doctor has prescribed Nitrofurantoin. These pose lesser risk to my baby, but are a lower dose. fingers crossed these will work. I live in the uk"

"I had an uncomplicated UTI and was prescribed a 6 day course of TMP. After the first tablet I developed intense nausea, chills and overwhelming fatigue. I have now taken 3 tablets and have not eaten in three days. Even the sight of food makes me sick. I pretty much lay on my electric blanket with alternating chills and sweating. I am terminating usage and will never accept this drug again. I think that it did knock out the UTI."

"I was prescribed a 3 day course of Alprim, one per night for a urinary tract infection. After taking the first tablet a red blotchy rash appeared on my lower legs, extremely itchy. Next day I noticed blisters had appeared in the rash. I also was extremely tired, and had a burning feeling in my stomach, but as I only had one tablet to go to finish the course I continued to take it as I did not want the urinary tract infection to return. 2 days after completing the course the blistered rash is still with me although the itching has ceased. The UTI has gone, but I will never take this again as I have really suffered, this must be an allergic reaction."

"This drug worked very well for me and cleared up my UTI in a matter of 48hrs, although I was on a 7 day course of 2x200mg/daily. Unfortunately once the tablets finished the infection returned so needed a 2nd course. I'm currently taking a low dose at evening to keep the infection at bay while the specialists do some tests. I normally get every side effect going and dread taking new medication in any form especially after an horrific experience with Ciorofloxacin but the only side effect I experienced with this was itchy ankles and feet on day two but that didn't last into third day so I would class this as a minor side effect and insignificant. Good luck."

"This is my third time on trimethoprim (Alprim) for a UTI and it has worked every time, but UTI continues to slowly come back so got told next time I will be put on a low dose of this for 3 months! Never had any noticeable side effects. Recommend to everyone to please take with a good probiotic to minimise side effects, rebuild good gut bacteria and prevent thrush."

"I was prescribed a course of 3 Alprim tablets for a UTI and immediately noticed a few ulcers in my mouth half an hour after the first pill. I thought it was just the antibiotic making my immune system low and the next day had my next tablet. That’s when I started feeling much sicker and my mouth blisters much worse. I also experienced numbness in my left hand. I decided not to finish the course and so wish I had of stuck to my resolve but family said I should finish the course or the UTI would come back. About 15 minutes after the 3rd pill my mouth was on fire. My tongue, lips, gums all erupted into ulcers and I couldn’t eat or drink or sleep for the pain. My blood pressure is through the roof and I have terrible headaches. The doctor said I must have an allergy. Hand is still numb too. Never again."
