"I was taking 200 mg over 3 days. On the second day, I got horrendous neck ache, ear ache, and a sore throat. I stopped taking it, but the symptoms carried on. I'm going back to the doctor's today for something else."

"I'm halfway through a 7-day course of Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim) for a UTI. The distressing UTI symptoms improved the second day and for that, I'm grateful. But like so many others, I fell into depression. I spent that whole second day on the couch crying. Really down, no motivation, lots of guilt feelings, all-or-nothing, really dark thoughts. I know now that it's the drug and not my life that's a train wreck. I was surprised to find very little about depressive symptoms in the literature (journal authors should read this forum!) But I did find that this drug class can block vitamin D, folic acid, and dopamine. Makes sense now. Three more days..."

"At first, I took a couple of Amoxicillin, and my symptoms had nearly gone by the time I had my appointment. My doc, for some reason, prescribed me this. Took my first dose last night for UTI. Got up and nearly fell into the wall, I was so dizzy. Couldn’t sleep at all last night until about 10 hours after taking the pill. Experienced anxiety, however, I do suffer from anxiety, but it’s medicated and generally okay. Still a little dizzy this morning, and my UTI symptoms have started to come back. :( Going back to get more Amoxicillin!"

"Since taking a low dose of this drug, I have had pricking all over my body. It feels kind of like shingles, though it's not. I am supposed to take it for 3 months, but will have to call the doctor to get something different because of this side effect."

"I was put on Trimethoprim 200 mg tablets twice a day. After the 1st day, I did get a racing heart, but that stopped after the 2nd day. After that, I experienced feeling really, really low, depressed, not wanting to leave the house, and when I did, I felt very shaky and nervous. I have never felt like this before in my life, and I have never experienced this after taking any other antibiotic. I told the pharmacist about the symptoms/side effects, and she told me to notify my doctor/GP, which I did, and she said that when I complete the course (I was on day 6 of a 7-day course), after a few days, I should feel better. She said she won't prescribe this particular antibiotic to me in the future."

"Dreadful! These were so bad for my kidneys and bladder. Couldn’t urinate, weakness, dripping with sweat, couldn’t think or speak, trembling, and breathless. I felt like I’d been thumped in the kidneys. I believe this is due to the fact that they increase potassium levels!"

"Was prescribed a 7-day course (think curse would be a better word) for a suspected UTI. Day 3 started feeling a bit weird/off-kilter. Very anxious, tired, loss of appetite, bloating, chronic abdomen pain, but persevered as instructed by GP. Day 5, in bits!! Not sleeping, aching, anxiety borderline manic. By day 6, I honestly thought I was dying and was about to go to A&E. Finished the course but will NEVER use it again. Stay away from it, ask your GP for an alternative."

"I have just finished a week's course of trimethoprim for cystitis. It cleared symptoms within a few days, which was great, but they made me feel unwell in myself. I felt nauseous all week and also felt achy and lethargic, as if I were coming down with another illness. Once I finished the course, the nausea stopped, but a day later I woke up to find an itchy rash all over my upper legs-basically an allergic reaction. These antibiotics certainly cleared the infection quickly, but I obviously don't tolerate them very well. However, I was on them for a week, and I think that they can be prescribed for shorter lengths of time."

"I was prescribed this medication, as I had sepsis about 4 weeks ago. They think it's due to an infected gall bladder which the duct is blocked with stones. I can't take any of the -cillin family of antibiotics, so I was prescribed other antibiotics 2 weeks ago. They didn't work, so I was prescribed these. The first day I was fine, the second day I started feeling yuck and not wanting to go out. The second night, I struggled with anxious, horrible feelings which I don't normally have. On the third day, I realized it was these tablets when I looked online and read the reviews. I don't think these should be prescribed at all. I'd rather have sepsis again than feel how I did on this medication. Avoid."

"I was prescribed a course of 3 Alprim tablets for a UTI and immediately noticed a few ulcers in my mouth half an hour after the first pill. I thought it was just the antibiotic making my immune system low, and the next day I had my next tablet. That’s when I started feeling much sicker and my mouth blisters much worse. I also experienced numbness in my left hand. I decided not to finish the course and so wish I had stuck to my resolve, but family said I should finish the course or the UTI would come back. About 15 minutes after the 3rd pill, my mouth was on fire. My tongue, lips, and gums all erupted into ulcers, and I couldn’t eat, drink, or sleep for the pain. My blood pressure is through the roof and I have terrible headaches. The doctor said I must have an allergy. My hand is still numb too. Never again."

"This is my second course of trimethoprim for the same urinary infection. Didn't work after 1 week, and now the GP has put me on 2 weeks. Still uncomfortable and not at all confident it's resolving the issue, just masking the symptoms a bit."

"I'm male, 49 years old. Apparently unusual for men to have a UTI. Was prescribed 200 mg trimethoprim x 2 tablets for 7 days, and within 24 hours, symptoms had gone. Unfortunately, on day 7, after I had finished the course, the UTI came back. On the last day of a further 7-day course and concerned it's not going to shift it."

"Horrific. Woke up from a nap on the first day of taking with suicidal ideas. Staying in an apartment and had balcony visions. Suffer with PTSD but not suicidal. Currently on holiday, so panic disorder has set in but has been massively exemplified by this antibiotic. Was prescribed a 5-day dose, stopped taking after day 3. Still feeling side effects and wondering if I’ll return to normal or whether this is it now."

"I was hospitalized on day 6 of a course of trimethoprim (Triprim) with a full body rash which then turned into hives, prescribed prednisone which caused my blood sugars to rise considerably being a type 1 diabetic. I spent a day in the hospital, was to go home that night until a GP noticed that I was at risk of renal failure. That night I stayed in the hospital and all of the next day. Previously, years ago, I had an allergic reaction to the antibiotic Bactrim and was told I was allergic to sulfur. The GP knew this when prescribing trimethoprim and I have been assured that trimethoprim does not contain sulfur. In my lay opinion, after the trauma I have been through, I believe that the T.G.A. (who we are all supposed to trust) should take this drug 'off the market' so that other human beings will not have to experience the horrors inflicted upon us. It didn't help, it didn't work, caused immeasurable damage, the dosage was 300 mg once per day for 7 days."

"I was prescribed a 7-day course of this antibiotic, as the 3-day course of Nitrofurantoin did not work, but I think they would have done the job if the course was for 7 days, as I never had any of the symptoms I have with Trimethoprim. All the symptoms I had along with the UTI were awful, exactly as others have described, i.e., couldn’t sleep, felt very sick, was sick, as I just had no appetite for 5 days whilst in them. These tablets should make you feel better, not suicidal. Had a terrible headache and felt weird, and anxiety thoughts went through the roof, ended up in A&E on the second day. I have taken 5 ½ days' worth and now binned the others and will take my chances. I will also let my doctor know."

"This is my third time on trimethoprim (Alprim) for a UTI, and it has worked every time, but the UTI continues to slowly come back, so I got told next time I will be put on a low dose of this for 3 months! Never had any noticeable side effects. Recommend to everyone to please take with a good probiotic to minimize side effects, rebuild good gut bacteria, and prevent thrush."

"I took this drug for the second time. 24-48 hours later, developed an itch which erupted into a huge blister on my penis - it is a kind of allergic reaction called a Fixed Drug Eruption. Was sent to the Emergency Department. Later, consulted dermatologists who confirmed rare and serious side effects of this drug."

"I was getting daily migraines on this drug. Halfway through the course, I decided to stop taking my daily dose after a really awful migraine that I needed to take sumatriptan to clear up. Another doctor had prescribed me another antibiotic for UTI earlier in the year. I had no problems then."

"This review is partly in response to the last review from Stardust: I just wanted to tell you, what you described with your experience I had the EXACT same reaction, so you are not alone at all. I was on 300 mg 1 x day for a UTI, and it completely wiped me out, I was exhausted from day one. I had pounding, throbbing headaches that were unbearable and dizziness, especially getting up or bending over. As I continued taking it, it just got worse. Day 3, I started getting awful abdominal cramps and pains in my lower back, stomach, and legs, diarrhea, vomiting, and terrible nausea. My heart began to palpitate so bad I couldn’t sleep, and my whole body vibrated, and I could feel my heart beating through my body, it seemed. I got hot flushes followed by chills. It is honestly the worst antibiotic I have ever had and would rather put up with the burning when peeing of UTI than suffer these horrible, sickly side effects. Ask for Augmentin or amoxicillin, don’t take trimethoprim! Heed my warning!"

"On the first night of taking this awful antibiotic, I had a really high fever, back pain, and the most blinding headache. I had taken a three-day course before with the same symptoms, but thought it was the UTI itself. I thought I was having an embolism in my brain at one point. Now I know, after one night, it is the side effect of trimethoprim. I won’t touch these lethal drugs ever again."

"No one writes positive reviews anymore, lol. I wanted to state that I had a positive time while taking trimethoprim. Starting off, I was a bit nervous about taking it due to the negative things I read online. Now, I am on day four of the medication, and I feel fine. Although I did crush this medication and took it with applesauce and a bit of syrup. This review is coming from someone that deals with mild anxiety."

"Worst experience for me because only yesterday I apparently have a UTI, which I don’t believe I do because I have none of the symptoms. This drug made me almost sick on the first round. I had bad side pain still, which was worse than usual, my back is killing. I have a headache and find it hard to wake up but struggle to get to sleep. I've just had my second dose, and I want to stop taking it because I’m in so much pain. I do not recommend."

"I started a 7-day course, and by day four, I felt absolutely awful. The side effects of this antibiotic are horrendous. I literally felt worse due to the side effects than having a UTI. The most awful feeling of nausea, one of the worst headaches I’ve ever experienced, overwhelmed by tiredness and fatigue, tummy aches and pains, muscle aches and pains, and just a general feeling of feeling unwell. I can’t wait to get back to some normality again."

"Had a water infection. 7 days of trimethoprim 200 mg prescribed by my G.P. at one tablet twice daily. My infection did go, but I felt so nauseous and spaced out after day 2 of taking them. Day 6, I nearly stopped as I felt anxious for no reason and wanted to eat, but the nausea made it difficult! Horrid side effects for me."

"I read all the reviews. I was afraid to take these medicines, but thank God there are no side effects. I am 29 years old. I took 100 mg twice a day for 7 days for inflammation of the urinary tract and inflammation of the kidneys. We are all different, I was afraid like you."
