"I was put on Trazodone for mixed anxiety and depression by my psychiatrist, as I wasn’t getting anywhere with previous SSRI treatments, as they all seemed to make me worse. I was on Trazodone for 3 and a half weeks, things were fine for 10 days, but then I became too heavily sedated but could only sleep for 8 hours. In the final week of use, my depression worsened and panic symptoms set in, so I stopped it. The following day, I have never felt panic like it, I was tachycardic, very low in mood, and generally fearful of things. I was never this bad before I started taking the drug. I am 3 weeks off the drug, I’m less panicked but am very tachycardic all the time, and this makes me very anxious. My psychiatrist said we could restart on a lower dose and wean off the drug, but I’m not sure if it’ll be the same result. All I can say is that this is a horrible drug and would advise others to steer clear if at all possible, as the withdrawal effects are pushing me to breaking point."

"I have been taking this medication since menopause, and I am now 82 years old. I began taking trazodone as I could not sleep or function well, and I would’ve taken almost anything that let me sleep. The first couple of weeks of taking the pills I was tired, yet never groggy. I did not suffer side effects of any kind."

"I was prescribed this for sleep and to help elevate my mood. My prescription was for 25-50 mg at bedtime, but I found it wasn't effective for sleep unless I took the entire 50. It worked well for sleep, but I experienced many side effects. Some harmless, like vivid dreaming, but mostly bad, like teeth clenching, nosebleeds, severe nasal dryness and stuffiness, as well as appetite suppression and increased mood swings (mostly anxiety). I ended up not wanting to tolerate these things and came off it after 3 weeks. It did not elevate my mood, however, I may not have been on it long enough."

"This helped me sleep for one night. After that, it no longer worked. I felt so sick the next day. My doctor told me to give it a little bit longer to maybe work. I’ve never had a huge amount of problems sleeping, but I’ve been having anxiety lately, so I thought I would continue to give it a try. By the fifth night on it, I slept one very restless hour and felt so bad the next day, it increased my anxiety, gave me blurry vision, heart palpitations, along with very bad nausea. Haven’t eaten for a week! This is a very toxic, icky drug."

"At the beginning, I was scared to use this drug, as many people with anxiety are when they start new medications. I started with trazodone 12 mg with lorazepam, and then 25 mg with lorazepam, then finally 50 mg without lorazepam. The 50 mg really helped with my sleep! I can finally fall asleep and stay asleep. You really need to give this medication time to work. It took about 1-2 weeks for it to work for me. At 50 mg, it doesn’t help much with my anxiety, but for sleep and appetite, it’s been amazing. Life-saving drug!"

"I have just started and taken 5 tabs over 5 nights of 50 mg per day. I wake up tired and have a dry mouth. My jaw has been very clenchy and tight over the past 2 days. I am hoping things will settle and I will feel less anxious."

"Been put on trazodone for anxiety, depression, panic attacks, and insomnia. Initially on 50 mg, it helped with sleep and calmed nerves, but for some reason, felt irritable. I was then upped to 100 mg and am now having constant awful headaches, I now know why I was feeling irritable."

"I have been taking a low dose (35-40 mg) of trazodone for over 2 years. It has been a life changer for me. My anxiety levels and concentration issues had not allowed me to function normally. I had serious sleeping issues, too. After a couple of weeks, trazodone solved almost all problems. I still have attention/concentration problems, but I cannot compare them to the ones I faced. My physical symptoms are gone, too. I had OCD and generalized anxiety. Today, with trazodone, I would say I function 90%. It is important that whatever you take, you not only address the symptoms but do meditation or any other form of regular practice (which becomes a habit) to heal. I am curious what happens when - at a point - I wean off... Be well!"

"If you want to wake up feeling groggy, drowsy, and still tired, then this is the drug for you! I was on this drug for 2 years. Yes, it does sedate you, and yes, your eyes close for the whole night, but I never felt rested. Try Pregabalin instead. Far superior."

"Helps anxiety but still got a long way to go before I see its full effects! So this is my 3rd day taking it and omg does it make you feel groggy and tired and lazy during the day! I'm gonna keep at it for a while and see what happens but the tiredness is something I don't really like because I like to get up and stay active! When I first started this medicine I was very scared and skeptical as I don't work well with medicines but it was okay!"

"Took large amounts of trazodone, between 100 mg and 200 mg to start, but eventually I had overdose-like symptoms like dry mouth and heart palpitations. I, myself, decreased my dose to what I felt was right and haven’t had any problems since then. Significantly decreasing my dosage rather than slowly easing into taking less, like the doctor would have me do, didn’t have any negative effects, luckily."

"So far, anxiety has dropped, sleep is like REM all night, up and down to the loo several times, but back to sleep. No signs of depression lifted, but early days. Problems are dizziness all morning, fatigue a lot, stomach issues. Waiting to see how many weeks to see what happens."

"We have a newborn now. He sleeps for 3 hours at a time. The lack of sleep causes me anxiety and can't get back to sleep fast enough. Trazodone is a life saver. I can get to sleep faster and have more restful naps. I'll take that over dry mouth everything. 50mg/night."

"I've been taking trazodone since 2014, 50-100 mg, and honestly would go as far as to say they saved my life. Started taking for major depressive episode/bipolar 2/anxiety. When I started taking trazodone, my anxiety and agitation were unbearable. This medication calmed me down, helped with my mood and sleep. I've had no side effects. I realize everyone is different, but I've been on several antidepressants/mood stabilizers, etc., and would say this medication has helped me the most to be able to function and live a decent life."

"Trazodone is the worst medication I’ve ever taken. I suffer from major depression and anxiety and insomnia. The very first dose I took increased my anxiety. I was wide awake and got no sleep. I’m glad it works for the majority of people, but it definitely doesn’t work for me. And I’ve attempted to take this twice."

"I started off taking 25 mg Trazodone and eventually worked my way up to 75 mg, which I was on for about 2 months. Trazodone worked great for helping me fall and stay asleep throughout the night without waking up from panic attacks. It made me feel relaxed, and I never felt the need for Xanax, which was the case prior to taking Trazodone. However, getting off Trazodone was rough. The first week off, I had two panic attacks at night even while on an SSRI. After that, I became more stable, but experiencing those few panic attacks after getting off wasn't fun."

"I am in my mid-fifties, and my anxiety has gradually worsened over the past 6 years or so. I'm now off work. I have tried a few meds, but this is the most recent. I only took 50 mg for 3 weeks. I found my sleep to be a little better, and I seemed slightly less self-conscious, if that makes sense. The negatives far outweighed any benefits, though. Within the first week, I had lost my appetite, and when I ate, I would just bloat. I also got stomach pains. It basically shut my metabolism down. I have extreme headaches and dizziness as well, and zero motivation. I have to say that I am one of those people that are very sensitive to medications, so this drug may benefit some people."

"I’m sharing this hoping it will help fellow sufferers of anxiety and depression. I was on Trazodone 50 mg for 22 years. Looking back, it only ever took the edge off things. I withdrew from them 17 months ago very slowly, and I was doing fine until I contracted the coronavirus. Then, anxiety, sleepless nights, etc., kicked in, so the doctor put me back on them. Big mistake. For 7 months, I suffered greatly, nothing helped. My anxiety was a shocker, so I decided to withdraw once again slowly. When I was down to a quarter of a tablet, I was rushed into the hospital with arterial fibrillation of my heart. They suspect it was the Trazodone, as it can cause tachycardia in some. I am happy to say I’m free of it and now on Mirtazapine. What a difference! It is an amazing tablet. I’m very sensitive to all meds, but no side effects from this. I’m a week in on taking it, and I feel myself again-not completely there, but mostly at peace with myself. I’ve trawled sites looking for reviews, so I thought mine might help someone. Good luck x."

"I was on Trazodone for a total of 3 years, and it did not help my condition, nor did I want to continue to take this medicine because of all of the terrible side effects. I could not wean off of Trazodone for the life of me because my body ended up getting addicted to it, and when I would try, I felt like I was a drug addict weaning off of meth, that is how strong this stuff is. Thank God I'm off of it and back in control of my life. I would not recommend taking this medication!"

"Prescribed 150 mg for anxiety and unable to go to sleep. Took 1/2 tablet, which was 75 mg. Started stumbling around soon after taking. Spent a sleepless night with the jitters, blurry vision, head felt like it was in a vice. Was 36 hours before I felt back to normal."

"I thought this might be good for sleep. Tried it once, 50 mg, and three hours later was wide awake for the whole night. Then tired and anxious for the rest of the day, threw the rest in the bin. It obviously didn’t work for me, and from what I’ve read in the forums, it doesn’t work for many others. It’s a shame as I only wanted it for sleep. I can see why it is not used as a first line for depression and anxiety, as it seems to be worse than a Benzo."

"Avoid this drug at all costs. I have a panic disorder, which is quite severe. One of the worst symptoms is agoraphobia, which was bad before I took trazodone. Now I do not leave the house whatsoever. Firstly, does this help your condition? In my case, no, it made it far more severe and has set me back months, possibly years. Are there side effects? Yes, with a capital Y. You may end up with a heartbeat that feels like your heart is about to burst out of your chest for 4-5 hours immediately after taking it, so forget sleep. The minutest of movements, and your heart continues to pound rapidly. You will feel weak, lightheaded, dizzy pretty much all the time. I was nauseous, had extreme photosensitivity, seizures, a break from reality for two days. I was doing and saying things I do not remember, unfortunately. The NHS provided very little help. The worst thing is it made me-and I still am-suicidal. Avoid this awful drug."

"I started Trazodone at the suggestion of my doctor, who said it was non-addictive and it may help to wean me off of Ativan, which I started taking for depression following mom's death. I ended up taking two Trazodone (100 mg) nightly. In four months, approximately, I detoxed off the Ativan. I waited a month and started weaning off the Trazodone by dropping a quarter pill to 1.75 pills per night. This was tough, but I persisted, and in a couple of more weeks, I dropped down to 1.5 pills per night. At this point, I had an extreme reaction where it felt like my head was in a vice and I was in panic mode. So, I went back to 1.75 pills for another month and my head came out of the vice, then I dropped back to 1.5 pills. My head was in a vice again, but I persisted, and in a week, I started feeling better. I am currently taking 0.75 Trazodone one night and 0.5 the next. I will move all the way to zero pills this way. Way too long of a detox for me. Never again...I hope."

"I have BPD, ADHD, anxiety, and a bit of paranoia. The first week of taking it, I felt great, but now I've gotten used to taking it. Now I'm still getting paranoid at work, that people are talking behind my back. Maybe I should go on a higher dose, but I'm not too sure if it will help paranoia or not."
