For Hashimoto's disease "If I could list -1 as a rating, I would. Proceed with caution with this medication. I did not know what was happening to me until I spoke with two mutual friends over the holiday weekend. The confusion, depression, exhaustion, unable to sleep, and rapid heartbeat are the short list. I started NP Thyroid in May of 2019 and reached out to my doctor to switch me back to my RX in October. I've been on my old script for less than a month, but my symptoms are still present. Gained 15 lbs quickly, and joint pains are overwhelming. My life has been affected! Be careful... please!"

For Hashimoto's disease "I'm here today to find out if anyone else has noticed a urine-like taste/smell from their NP Thyroid tabs lately? I've been taking NP Thyroid for years now, and I feel as well on this almost as well as I did on Nature Throid, which is my overall favorite. But I never tasted this before. My thyroid journey: Nature Throid was unavailable in my area for quite a while, and I did Armour, but it was expensive, so I was offered NP. All of the natural options have made me feel better than Synthroid ever did in the 17 years I took that. No one checked my free T3 back then, nor told me I had an autoimmune disorder. My doctor just said you have an underactive thyroid, here, take Synthroid."

For Hashimoto's disease "I started taking this medication when I could no longer get WP thyroid. I was happy with the switch until this last refill in the beginning of October. I’ve gained almost 10 pounds, my joints hurt, the medicine smells and tastes horrid. I don’t know what they did, but they did something. If I complain to my doctor, she’s going to stick me back on Synthroid, and I’m going to get even sicker. Please fix this."

For Hashimoto's disease "I started out on WP, and after the shortage, I switched to NP. My life has been great. I lost 40 pounds and felt completely normal after going gluten and dairy-free along with NP. I got my refill last week and got so sick after just one dose. I react like there’s something I have an intolerance to. My throat burns, and my stomach hurts, plus the nausea all day. I cannot eat. I had my doctor switch me to Armour, but with all my intolerances plus Celiac, my abdomen blew up, and I was so bloated I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I honestly don’t know what to do now. I feel like I was just given a death sentence. This is so wrong. Acella needs to be held accountable for this. Stop playing with lives! I called them, and the person I spoke to did admit they changed things. I was told they changed their supplier of the active ingredient of pig thyroid. She wouldn’t say where they now get it. Who knows."

For Hashimoto's disease "I’ve been on Armour thyroid for over 10 years, taking 60 mg daily. My prescription got filled with NP thyroid this last time. When I received it, I saw the change, quickly looked it up, saw desiccated thyroid and figured it was fine. I finished my Armour and switched over. I was also recently diagnosed with type 2 narcolepsy for which I’ve been taking Modafinil for the last 4 months. So when I started developing headaches, palpitations, hypertension, and GI bloating, and let’s just say it-farts-I actually thought it was that. Even though it’s only been about a month of those symptoms. Today as I sat here and pondered why the headaches and increase in BP, I thought of the thyroid medication switch and started poking around. And here I found some answers. Along with reading the differences in Armour and NP. I won’t take it tomorrow or the next day, until they give me Armour back. Be alert to what feels good, right, and normal. Be persistent in your health!"

For Hypothyroidism, After Thyroid Removal "I agree something is wrong with NP Thyroid. The smell/taste of my last prescription is awful. I’ve been on the same dose for over a year with no issues, and at my last physical, my TSH went from 1 in June to over 10 in November, and I do not have a thyroid gland anymore. Something is wrong with this medicine."

For Underactive Thyroid "For all of you on NP Thyroid who have noticed a recent decline in your health with hypothyroid symptoms returning and NP having a terrible smell... contact Acella online... leaving your contact information. This seems to be the only way they will get back to you. I did this last week and Steve from Acella contacted me the next day. He asked a long list of questions and was typing as I answered. He claims the only thing that they have changed is their supplier of the raw porcine and that is where they are looking at a possible problem. I asked him if he would like to hear from others who are having the same issues and he said yes. I will be changing to either Armour (which also has issues) or a T4 plus a T3. I don't know what else to do."

For Hashimoto's disease "NP Thyroid used to be a great, life-changing medication, but now just seems like a placebo pill covered in cat pee. My Hashimoto symptoms are returning, as well as a gratuitous stomach ache after ingestion. I can’t take this medication anymore! I returned the first refill after being told I got a bad batch, and it was replaced by the same smell/taste combo."

For Underactive Thyroid "I took Armour Thyroid for the last 10 years. When the formula was changed a couple of years ago, all of the hypothyroid symptoms set in: weight gain, hair loss, etc. My new doctor switched my prescription to NP Thyroid about 6 months ago. Such a huge improvement!!"

For Thyroid Cancer "When I found NP Thyroid 11 months ago, I got my life back. I struggled for a year on different medications after a total thyroidectomy for cancer, but now Acella changed all that. That's over now. They changed the supplier for the active ingredient, claiming it worked exactly the same. It does not. I am having memory problems, brain fog, heart palpitations, headache, and a burning throat. There is something wrong with these pills. No more NP Thyroid for me."

For Hashimoto's disease "I have been doing well on Armour for many years now. Unbeknownst to me, the pharmacy switched me to NP Thyroid by Acella. Within a few weeks, all of my hypothyroid symptoms came back with a vengeance. I gained weight, got a puffy face, stopped sleeping, was constantly fatigued, and my migraines increased exponentially. Once I switched back to Armour, I felt like myself again. Now I always pay close attention while filling my prescription."

For Underactive Thyroid "I took NatureThroid for 12 years without problems and good results. It was recalled. I found I could not take Synthroid, which tore up my digestive tract. I tried Tirosint and no go. Endocrinologist switched me to NP Thyroid. I went to the ER with a head injury, and that had no ill effects. I was not allowed to leave and was detained for 10 hours because I had atrial fibrillation. I came home with a beta blocker and a blood thinner, which I hope are temporary. This is a dangerous and horrible drug. Irregular heartbeat is a listed side effect. I reported it to the FDA, mentioning that the recall of NatureThroid caused this situation."

For Underactive Thyroid "I feel lifeless - that is the only way to describe how I feel. I've been taking this medication, a low dose of 30 mg, for 6-7 weeks. I feel way worse than I did before I started it. I thought something was seriously wrong until I thankfully found this forum. I have never been so exhausted and fatigued in my life. Nausea, indigestion, constipation, puffy eyelids, my mood is off... the list goes on. This drug should not be on the market. Don't take it!!!"

For Hypothyroidism, After Thyroid Removal "Was okay. Not like WP, but I was getting my life back after the RLC debacle. Now, in August 2019, they changed it. Of course, Acella denies it, but you cannot argue with the pill physically changing and smelling of ammonia. They almost seem like they have been tainted. All hypo symptoms returned with a vengeance on just one day of this “non-reformulated formulation.” Just trying to swallow the pills caused burns on my tongue, throat, stomach, and intestines."

For Underactive Thyroid "All who were taking NP Thyroid should know it has been recalled. I just got a new batch, and it works fantastic. Best I have felt in a year. Glad I dumped the Nature Throid, as I was taking almost 3 1/2 grains a day just to get a little bump every day. Now on 60 mg of NP twice a day, and it's like a whole new world. Get rid of your old NP meds and replace them with the newer script. The recalled NP had 115% more T3 than was needed, that's why it was recalled by Accela."

For Underactive Thyroid "This did NOT work well for me at all. I turned into a different person. It scared me and my husband, and my GP felt so bad. We were trying to save money because we do not have insurance. Once I stopped NP and went back to Armour, I got my life back. Be careful, everyone reacts differently, and this was not good for me."

For Hypothyroidism, After Thyroid Removal "I have been on thyroid for 15 years. 8 years before thyroid removal, 7 years after. I started with Synthroid at the beginning, I felt 'normal.' Then it was difficult to get Synthroid, and I switched to Nature Thyroid. Was on that for a very long time, made me feel better, no headaches, didn’t fluctuate in weight. Then the money-hungry pharmaceutical companies decided that we didn’t pay enough for our working thyroid medicine and didn’t make enough. So, I switched to NP. Now I am back to being fatigued all the time, migraines again, weight gain, brain fog, cramps in my legs, the list goes on. When are these pharmaceuticals going to be accountable for screwing with the well-being of hundreds of thousands of people?"

For Underactive Thyroid "NP Thyroid was great for about a year (I finally got optimal after the whole WP/Nature shortage/reformulation!), but only up until last month or so. Now I (along with many others, see Stop the Thyroid Madness website/blog) am not so sure about it. I’m on 120+90 mg. The pills I got are completely different from previous...grayish and speckled instead of solid smooth yellowish, no speckles, previously hardly any odor, and the new ones are also noticeably thicker in size. And the smell. Like insecticide mixed with cat urine...yuck! Called Acella, and they basically dismissed my concerns stating from a scripted answer that color/odor could change from batch to batch and that nothing has changed. Keep an eye on this one!"

For Underactive Thyroid "I tried all the thyroid synthetics when I was first diagnosed with underactive thyroid in 2012. None of them worked for me. My doctor finally decided to put me on Armour. It was okay until they reformulated it, it stopped working. Next was Nature Thyroid. It worked better than the reformulated Armour, but not as well as the old Armour. I asked him for WP, it was the best!!! Then they had a manufacturing problem and I couldn't get it. Next was NP by Acella, and I have been feeling better than the reformulated Armour. It works as well as the Nature Thyroid, but not like the WP! RLC Labs has a problem again, none of their NDT is available again. I'm glad I stuck with the NP, never got any of the recalled stuff. I've never experienced any of the complaints others have. I'm not happy about all the fillers in NP, but I've seen worse formulations. I wish they'd clean it up."

For Underactive Thyroid "I started taking this back in July 2022 because my insurance didn't cover Armour. This was a horrible mistake. At first, I didn't notice a huge difference, but within a couple of months, my hair started falling out, I had aching joints and weird back pain that I had never experienced. I gained lots of weight, too. I got my labs done, and they did not show hypothyroid, but all my other female hormones were a mess. I am going back to Armour and praying I go back to feeling like myself."

For Underactive Thyroid "Like many others here, after taking NP Thyroid for the last 5 years with no issues, my script filled in August 2019 smelled like urine and tasted terrible. I kept taking them and suffered a horrible stomach pain event and almost went to the ER. I contacted Acella, and it sounds like they have a new supplier, and this medication is now ruined. I guess I have to switch to Armour now after doing so well on this drug for so long."

For Hypothyroidism, After Thyroid Removal "I have been taking NP Thyroid for about 2 1/2 years. I have no thyroid, it was removed due to cancer many years ago. I always thought it tasted nasty and smelled bad. But it had worked very well up until August 2019. I have gained 7 pounds unexplainably. I am super careful about my diet: low carbs, healthy, etc. Please, whatever you have done as a company, change the dynamics back on the NP Thyroid. It once worked!"

For Hashimoto's disease "I started taking NP Thyroid in March 2019 after 20 years on Synthroid. Once my dosage was correct, I began to feel so great. I felt like I was actually a functioning human being again. And then I got the 'new' batch in October and immediately felt terrible. I had zero energy, could barely walk down the stairs, deep hip pain. I examined the pills, and they looked different (speckles) and smelled terrible (now smelled like cat pee, instead of just kind of unpleasant). Thankfully, I had some of my old batch left and resumed taking that and immediately talked to my doctor about switching to a synthetic T4/T3 combo so this wouldn't happen again. I've been on the new meds for 5 days and not feeling well yet. Not sure if it's from the doses of bad NP I took or just getting used to new meds. This is just heartbreaking. So many people having terrible reactions to the 'new' formula while Acella is saying basically that it's all in our heads. I just want to feel better."

For Underactive Thyroid "Started taking NP Thyroid about 3 weeks ago. I was taking WP Thyroid due to recall, no longer available. I have chronic Lyme and co-infections. I've been feeling a lot better lately. About 2 weeks ago, I started feeling very anxious, heart palpitations, extreme fatigue, severely depressed, brain fog, muscle pain/aches, and the list is endless. I really thought it was one of my co-infections coming back. Paid $580 to get tested for it, and I was negative. Couldn't figure out what was causing all of this until I Googled NP Thyroid, it smells like cat pee. I will no longer be taking it. I don't know what to change it to, I see my doc on Monday, I hope to get it sorted. Please don't touch this stuff."
