"I was given this medication to help with the side effects of chemo and radiation, and it was okay the first day, but as the days went on, I began to feel irritated, groggy, and extremely restless, but I was really tired, like super tired. It kept me so drained that I slept for 22 hours! Almost all the side effects mentioned above (or below), I experienced them too. I will never take this again! I'd rather be nauseous!"

"I was given this through an IV in the ER. I had terrible nausea, and Zofran didn't touch it. Even though Compazine did take my nausea away, it left me incredibly groggy yet restless. I spent the entire rest of the day in a haze. I've never abused drugs, but I would imagine this is how you would feel when coming off of some sort of high, yet it lasts all day long. I kept feeling angry and anxious as well. I would much rather have nausea and will never take this medicine again!"

"Had this for nausea. The reaction to it was delayed, so it took a long time to figure out what was causing the violent reactions. I was finally told it was all psychosomatic, aka all in my head! Would get muscle spasms started in the left arm, then traveled to my face and jaw. If I could catch it fast enough, I could put a towel between my teeth, but did thousands of dollars of damage with breaking off teeth! After it subsided, my whole face looked crooked, and my jaw did not line up right for days. Highly dangerous stuff."

"I was given this drug in the ER for nausea and a bad headache. The nurse gave me this drug but said it was a Benadryl 'cocktail.' Immediately when I felt it pushed through the IV, my skin began to burn, and I started to have a choking sensation. Honest to goodness, I felt like I was going to die. I started to have the worst panic attack of my life. The heart monitor I was hooked up to started beeping like crazy, and my blood pressure shot through the roof. I was so scared because I drove myself to the ER. I felt like I was losing my freaking mind on this drug. The only thing the doctor on call said to me was, 'Well, I guess you are allergic to Compazine.' I was like, YOU THINK!! The next day, they let me drive myself home.... To this day, I have no memory of how I made it home, but I'm so thankful I made it safely. Word of caution, please be careful if you are ever given this drug. I feel like I have PTSD from that terrible night in the ER because of it. It's a HORRIBLE drug."

"I feel for all of you very much. All of those bad experiences, I also had. Plus, doctors and nurses don't seem to care, at least most don't. About 13 years ago, I went to the ER for nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. I didn't feel well when I went in. As soon as they put Compazine in my IV, I felt terrible panic, restlessness, anxiety. I could not sit, lay down, or stay in one place for more than 5 minutes. I pulled my IV out and started running to my friend. I thought maybe I had a stroke. I didn't know. My friend tried to talk to the doctors. I was outside, I couldn't do anything to feel any better. I waited to die. I was afraid I would hurt someone. I was one of the top weightlifters in the world. I started banging my head as hard as I could on the concrete wall. Then I went back in the hospital bleeding. I thought then the doctors would do something to help me. They called the police, my friend got me home. I was worse. I took some Xanax. I still have anxiety from that experience."

"I was on this thread a while ago to see if people had a similar experience, and I’m just now deciding to post because I remember how horrible it was. I went into the ER with pancreatitis, and instead of promethazine, they decided to do Compazine. I wish I could go back in time and stop the nurse from administering it. They pushed it with IV dilaudid, so it took a bit for me to feel the negative effects, but long story short: crippling anxiety, sweats, uncontrolled movement (dystonia), insomnia, the list goes on. Didn’t sleep for 56 hours, and the only thing that even helped a little was walking. I walked that entire time. This medication is the worst."

"I’m honestly shocked this drug is still allowed to be administered. I have several chronic illnesses, including mitochondrial disease, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, dysautonomia, gastroparesis, migraines, and more. Four years ago, at 14, I was taken to the emergency room with a severe headache along with nausea and stroke-like symptoms. I was given the migraine cocktail that included Compazine. I immediately felt a rush of adrenaline accompanied by the worst restless leg/body/burning sensation I’ve ever felt. I remember wanting to literally crawl out of my skin. I felt as though I was going crazy. I have been septic and close to death many times, but genuinely cannot think of a more uncomfortable experience than being on this medication. It took 50 mg of IV Benadryl + 3 mg of IV Ativan to get me to finally calm down."

"I have been suffering with gastroparesis for years, and at one point, ended up in the emergency room because I was so intensely nauseated and dehydrated. Was given Compazine in IV solution, which worked wonderfully to stop the nausea. The doctor sent me home with Compazine pills, and they weren't as effective."

"Went to the ER for migraine and Lyme disease joint pain. I was given Compazine and immediately had a dystonic reaction!! My whole jaw locked up and my body was twitching and restless legs. The doctor ordered Benadryl stat, and eventually, the symptoms slowed down. They kept me overnight due to the reaction I had. I will never ever have this drug again. Everywhere I go, I say I’m highly allergic to Compazine (prochlorperazine). Be careful with this drug."

"Was given this at the ER about 4 months ago for gallbladder-related nausea, had the worst panic attack I have ever experienced, tried to rip the IV out of my arm and run out of the hospital, have had many extreme panic attacks since. I have had panic attacks before but never within 6 months of each other. I get them at least 10 times a month now. Wish I had never taken this medication."

"Look up 'dystonic reaction' before taking this med and be prepared to go to the ER if your muscles start freezing up. Taking this med led to one of the scariest experiences of my life. It definitely worked for the nausea, but at the cost of becoming a squawking, paralyzed contortionist. I must have looked like I needed an exorcism by the time I arrived at the ER, but I only took an ambulance ride and several IV shots of both benztropine and Valium to get me back to normal."

"I was given this Compazine last night for a migraine. I knew I shouldn’t have taken it because I’ve had a bad experience with Reglan. The doctor assured me that it was far less likely to happen, and I even asked the nurse to push it in slowly. It took a few minutes to kick in, but once it did, I knew the feeling all too well. Extreme anxiety and just an uncontrollable feeling of panic. You want to move around because you can’t think, and you want to escape, but then you’re afraid to move. They offered to give me Benadryl, but I was just afraid at that point. It eventually mellowed out slightly, and they discharged me. I went home and had an issue sleeping because I couldn’t sit still or stay asleep long. Next day, it’s been a little over 12 hours, and I still feel restless and so tired. I’ve tried to sleep, but I feel like I have to keep moving. I wasn’t even able to go to work. I would have preferred having my migraine. ONLY GET Toradol AND Zofran OR Benadryl for your migraines."

"Just like all the others. I was given this plus Benadryl in the ER to treat headache and nausea. I soon wanted to claw out the IV, and I had this horrible sense of dread, like I was going to die. I couldn't think of anything but wanting to get out of that room. After getting home, I was terrified to be alone. Finally slept it off mostly after several hours. Still feel off and jumpy 12 hours later. Never taking this medication ever again."

"I went to the ER, and I told them Compazine would make my skin crawl. The doctor didn’t believe me and had it put in my IV. It was 100 times worse in an IV. If my husband hadn’t been there, I would have ripped it out. Ran and got the nurse, and they said, well, we didn’t think it would do that. You have to just let it run its course now. There is nothing we can do to fix it."

"Normally I am given Nubaine. However, this time a younger ER doctor was hopping on the 'no opioid' bandwagon. Everything seemed fine, then all of a sudden I wanted to rip out the IV. Benadryl made it better, but I now seem to be prone to panic attacks in closed rooms. I never had this before. Are opioids worse than this? No!"

"Given Compazine with Benadryl and wow, the Compazine caused a bad reaction! Felt like a 100+ worst nightmare from anxiety! Nurse seemed uncaring and didn't know this causes those side effects! This will go on my med list and I will stick with my Zofran. Still feel bad some 12+ hours later. Never again. I can relate to the others!"

"I have cystic fibrosis, so I am constantly in and out of the hospital and have been through various drugs throughout my life. I struggle with severe anxiety, panic attacks, and OCD. I was admitted for routine IV antibiotics, and the meds made me extremely nauseous. I was given Zofran, and that didn't help, so they decided to give me Compazine. The nurse injected this drug into my port, and the effects were instant. I felt anxious, jumpy, and thought I was going crazy. My room was so small, which made it worse, and I was pacing around, ready to pass out. I thought I was going to have to be admitted into the psych ward. I rang my nurse and let her know what was happening, and she had me lay down, my legs started shaking uncontrollably. She got the doctor, and that's where my legs started locking in place and I couldn't move them. They pumped me full of Benadryl and Ativan to calm me down. It took a good 24 hours to feel relief, this induced severe PTSD from this experience."

"I was given the migraine cocktail (Benadryl, Compazine, Toradol) in the ER after suffering off and on for weeks from headaches. After my MRI came back clear is when they gave me this through IV. I felt like I was going to jump right out of my skin, it was awful. I'm lucky that this feeling lasted only 15 minutes, it worked, but to me, that anxiety it caused is not worth it! If I have to ever be seen for that again, I will be steering clear of that mixture!"

"This did take away my nausea, but it also made my heart pound and made me extremely irritable and anxious for about 20 hours. Even with a Benadryl, I couldn’t sit still for about 10 hours after taking it, and I had lingering anxiety 10 hours after that. I had a similar experience with Reglan, and the ER doc I saw said they are similar drugs. I would say if Reglan gives you a reaction, there’s a good chance this will too. It did its job, but I would have taken the nausea over the anxiety any day."

"I have Lupus, and I used to get Promethazine with one of my meds that's really hard on my stomach. A few months ago, I had an appendicitis attack and was throwing up for weeks. The doctor gave me IV Compazine, which worked like magic and even calmed my anxiety from being sick and in the hospital. It worked so well for me, my doctor changed the Promethazine to Compazine as a daily med to help combat the side effects from my other meds. I've never had any of the side effects from Compazine that everyone else is describing. In fact, in addition to fixing my nausea issues, I'm a much calmer person, and I feel like it gives me energy. I guess I'm just a weird patient."

"I went to the ER for a severe atypical migraine. They gave me Compazine via my IV along with Benadryl to prevent a side effect. After receiving it, I have never been so restless in my life. I couldn’t stop moving and squirming. My husband thought I was going mad. It did help when they gave me additional Benadryl, but I still couldn’t sit still or sleep. I felt like ripping my IV out. It was like I was a fish out of water flipping around. I had to get an MRI, and I wasn’t able to sit still for that, so they did give me Ativan, which eventually helped some more by knocking me out, but I still felt uneasy before it put me to sleep and when I woke up as well. It’s now been two days, almost three, and I’m still feeling like I can’t relax or sit still, which is making it hard to sit at work. I will never take this again and am having it added to my chart as an adverse/allergic reaction."

"I was given Compazine for extreme vomiting, and it literally made me have an out-of-body experience. I could see my body in the hospital bed, but it felt like I was getting up and walking away from the bed, so I kept holding on to the railing of the bed. It was horrible. I felt like I was two people, and I had no control over my body. I would never take this medicine again."

"Refuse this medication. Went in with the worst headache of my life, confusion, and a heavy, wave-like sensation in my body. Was given Compazine and Benadryl through IV, was told I’d have anxiety. I have generalized anxiety disorder and pharmacophobia, so that in itself was irresponsible, I think. Instant panic attack, feeling of being on the edge of blacking out, constant, horrible anxiety, the wave-like sensation, mood changes, and akathisia for the past month since being treated with this medication once."

"I was given this for nausea that could not be helped with Zofran. I take it on an as-needed basis or when the Zofran won't work. I have a lot of stomach issues, and I can say this stuff definitely helps. It does make me a little sleepy, but I'll take that any day over feeling sick and throwing up. The downside is the restless side effect. I feel like I have to keep moving unless I somehow manage to fall asleep. Then I am knocked out. Sometimes I take Valium or Benadryl to combat the feeling, but that leaves me groggy and unable to function."

"I’m sure this drug does work for some people, but as for the majority of us, it is a nightmare. When I was pregnant with my last child, I vomited several times a day, and in the end, I only managed to gain 14 pounds. I was very ill. Compazine was one of the few drugs that they can offer pregnant women. After I took the first pill, my nausea subsided. In its place, I had the worst anxiety that I have ever experienced. I couldn’t keep still. I wanted to just escape from my body, but of course, I knew it was the pill, and I just paced and wrung my hands until it wore off. I decided after that I would rather deal with the vomiting for the rest of my pregnancy. Fast forward 20 years. Since my encounter with Compazine, I made certain that I always had it listed with all of my physicians, right after shellfish as something I was allergic to and should never be given. I was given some in an IV since then and had the same issues."
