"I was suffering from unexplained nausea for about a year. I tried a host of other anti-nausea medications, but nothing really seemed to be helping. My doctor gave me Compazine, which helped my nausea but made me exhausted by the evening and caused me to burst into tears at least once a day. I stopped taking the medication because the side effects were too much for me to handle."

"Please don’t take this medication. They gave it to me through IV as a part of their useless “migraine cocktail,” which needs to be discontinued in and of itself. Needless to say, within 10 seconds, I was hot, sweaty, agitated - ready to pull the IV out, and I’ve had RLS before, this was a tad worse. The pure akathisia felt like hell. Then they gave me this as opposed to stronger meds because they were worried about me driving, but hell - if only they knew that this was more dangerous to drive with, maybe they would have reconsidered. This stuff makes you feel depersonalized, more sick, helplessly “under” (the best way I can put it), and the only way out is TIME. Benzos make it more tolerable (slightly). I’m on day two afterward, and I feel fortunate that I’m about 75 percent “back” from whatever hellish trip that was. It’s now on my allergy list. Lawsuit!"

"The absolute worst experience with an antiemetic I have ever had. I literally panicked in the hospital to the point I almost pulled my IV out. Zofran stopped working for my hyperemesis gravidarum, but I would rather live with nausea and vomiting day in and out than feel the uncontrolled anxiety and restlessness I felt with Compazine!"

"I thought I had the flu, so I went to the ER to get tested. It came back negative, but since I had a migraine, they gave me a “headache cocktail” which my sister had a bad reaction to, but I had forgotten (after all, I had a migraine and couldn't think straight). I got the IV meds, and one of them was Compazine...the awful liquid itself. Immediately, I had trouble getting comfortable, and my throat felt like I had a shrunken airway, but the doctors said it was just anxiety. So, it’s 4 in the morning, and I’m stumbling around the hospital waiting for my prescription and my stepdad to come pick me up, and I’m falling asleep any time I sit down. As soon as I got home, I fell into bed and couldn’t sleep unless my legs were writhing around. Then I slept off and on for almost 20 hours. I sweated most of the medication out, thank goodness, but I’ve never had anything like it happen before. I was by myself and was terrified. Why is this medication even still given?!?"

"I was given Compazine through the IV for nausea and vomiting while admitted. It was an absolute nightmare that still makes me feel pure fear when I think about it. I thought I was going to die. At first, my legs just felt restless, which I thought I was just having some anxiety, but then it really hit. I couldn't get my body to cool down, I started vomiting, then lost control of my bowels in front of the nurses. This lasted over six hours until they finally gave me something that knocked me out until it was over. I thought I was going to die. It scared both my partner, who was there, and myself to the point that I am now scared to take any more medications, fearing a similar reaction. They should really warn people about this drug."

"I was talking to my sister about my bad reaction to a medication I took 15 years ago called Compazine. I took this prescribed medicine while at home. I remember my experience like it was yesterday. At first, I felt a twitching in my jaws. All at once, my bottom jaw started going to the right, and my top jaw started going to the left. I could not stop it, and I could not talk. In fact, my jaw felt like it was trying to break off my face. I remember the emotional and physical pain. My husband and I were both crying because we both didn't understand what was happening! My husband ended up taking me to another clinic, and they admitted me at once. So BEWARE! Just from talking - I found out this same medication hurt my sister just last year."

"I was first given Compazine orally for anxiety and nausea. It did not appear to have any side effects. A year later, I was hospitalized following surgery and was extremely nauseous, so after giving me Zofran to no avail, they gave me Compazine IV. It burned going into my arm. I became very agitated and restless, my body could not stop shaking, and I felt like I was going to jump out of my skin. Luckily, they gave me Benadryl, and that helped calm me down a bit, but it took a couple of days to feel myself again. Will never take IV again."

"Took this for a migraine cycle, and while it helped with the migraine. When the nurse gave it to me, it made my heart race, and it made me have the worst panic attack. I couldn’t stay still because my legs were restless, and I was extremely hot and loopy. I won’t take this again."

"This drug made me feel worse than any drug I ever received. I had a migraine and was at the A&E. It was pure mortal terror from the minute they went into my vein. I had them stop the infusion immediately, but it was too late. My heart rate shot up, and I felt like I was going to die right there on the bed. Sleep came on and off, but not because of being relaxed. More like passing out repeatedly. I slept for 24 hours and still feel pretty horrible the next day."

"I was given this for migraines. I was stationed in Hampton Roads, VA, doing my time in the Navy. I had a TBI in Bahrain and was sent to Virginia for various medical treatments. I had blackouts and severe migraines that made me see spots at least 3-5 times a week. It was pure hell, so I thought. I would try to tolerate it the best I could, and I began frequenting the hospital where I received this drug. It took some time to figure out which drug I was having the horrendous side effects from. Portsmouth Naval issued me a 'cocktail,' as they called it, with this drug included. Over a few experiences with various doctors, I figured out this drug was the culprit. This drug made me feel like something terrible was crawling under my skin. 6 hours of hell."

"I had been suffering from severe nausea and vomiting on and off, including migraine, fever, and flank pain. It was my second time in the ER, so they gave me Compazine and I'd never had it, it relieved my nausea and migraine, but I started feeling so restless. I was freaking out, like I wanted to rip out my IV and leave and run away. Then they told me it's a side effect, and I already suffered from severe anxiety, it made it 1000x worse. I had the worst time trying to sleep, then had the weirdest dreams of my life. They gave me morphine shortly after, which calmed me a little and took the rest of my pain away, but I was hoping it'd honestly put me out. 24 hours later, and I still feel that restlessness in my body, but it's so much better than it was."

"I suffer from severe headaches on occasion, and usually Excedrin will do the trick. I had a headache several months ago that was there for 3 days. I finally broke down and went to the ER. They gave me Compazine and put me in a waiting room. Within five minutes, I felt terrified, like I had to get away. I told my wife to tell them to get my IV off me, or I would rip it out of my arm. They let me sign out AMA, and I fled the hospital. For several hours after, I felt like the walls were closing in and doom was imminent. I hate this medication and will NEVER take it again. Beware!!!"

"I went to the ER for stomach issues as a teen, and I took it. Went home, and 45 minutes later my jaw shifted all the way to the left, and I couldn’t control it. My neck started leaning to the right. I was rushed to the hospital and given Benadryl through an IV. Lucky it worked, I was in so much pain."

"I went to the ER for stomach pains and nausea. I am allergic to so many pain medicines that there is little I can take. They gave me Compazine, and as they put it in my IV, they told me it could cause severe anxiety in some people. Well, I can tell you now, it was horrific. I have had one major panic attack in my life, and this was 20 times worse. I started pulling off my clothes and ripped the IV out. They had to give me a big dose of Benadryl to 'reverse' the effects. Please, please think twice and consider other choices before taking this!"

"I went to the doctor with a headache and was given this medicine through IV, and it was the worst day of my life. I literally thought I was about to die. It's been 5 days, and I still don't feel all the way normal. The only thing helping is Ativan."

"I was given Compazine for nausea and vomiting when I was having monthly (girls) problems, which almost always included throwing up with pain. Violent spasms, like tetany lockjaw. I did thousands of dollars of damage to my teeth, and my whole jaw was crooked for days after. But doctors all told me it was 'stress,' all in my head, not the meds. One time when I was in the hospital and they gave me Compazine by injection, it started within a few minutes, yup, it was the Compazine. Also, have to be careful with other meds that may contain it. I had Tigan, which worked pretty well, but is no longer made. Last time, the doctor gave me Zofran, but I had a tough time getting the insurance to approve it, as they wanted to give me the cheaper Compazine generics. Be very, very careful, as I have had a few pharmacists tell me some other meds were not related, only to find out that they were. Be sure to do your homework and double, triple check what is in what."

"I went to the ER when I was experiencing headaches and vomiting due to a new medication I was put on. The doctors gave me Compazine, Toradol, and Benadryl through my IV. After a few minutes, I experienced the worst feelings of my life. I was thrown into a huge panic attack, I couldn't sit still, my heart rate rose to over 130. I had to stay in the hospital for 5 extra hours just to get my heart rate to return to normal. It took 24+ hours for the initial panic feeling to go away, and now going on 48 hours, my head still feels all foggy and I get dizzy when I stand up for long periods of time. I hope I return to normal soon, and I would not recommend this medication to anyone!!"

"If you are ever offered a sedative/nausea medication, please be aware that every single one of these recollections and experiences is true. I could compare almost exactly to each and every one of these stories. DO NOT TAKE COMPAZINE. It has been three days and I still do not feel normal."

"My doc gave me this medication over 20 years ago for nausea. I ended up having an allergic reaction. I had anxiety, and I couldn’t relax all day. I went to the hospital because of dystonia. Awful day. It also induced OCD, which I have been dealing with ever since. Has this terrible medication triggered OCD in others?"

"I was given this awful medication in a migraine cocktail. Within minutes, I was so anxious that I yanked my IV out and ran out of the hospital room. For hours, I couldn't stop moving my legs. It's been 3 days, and I'm still so anxious. I made the pharmacy write in notes that I was allergic to Compazine - prochlorperazine, so this never happens again."

"I took this during my first trimester of pregnancy for nausea. It worked wonders for about two days. On the third day, I started to feel strange at work and took a break. My forehead and throat felt like they were tightening. I decided to go home, and about halfway there, I felt my jaw forcing itself to the left while my top teeth forced to the right. I couldn’t control my face or tongue whatsoever. I should have gone to the emergency room, but instead, I decided to call it a day and try to fall asleep. I didn’t fall asleep until 2 a.m. or so when the flexes in my face finally subsided. The strangest experience of my life. My neck and jaw were so sore for days afterwards."

"I was fine the first 24 hours after my Benadryl and Compazine injection for a severe migraine, but now, 3 days later, I've been experiencing severe dystonia in my neck, back, and right arm. My hand was clenched in a tight fist all day, and I couldn't move it. Not only that, but Compazine made me hallucinate. I was hearing and seeing things and thinking very negative thoughts. Never, ever will I take this medication again."

"Reading the effects some folks have had brings me right back to 1993. I was 2 months pregnant with my son, who is now 23. I was vomiting so badly and was given Compazine as a suppository. It worked wonders for the first 2 days. My 3rd day was a trip to HELL! I was on the phone with my mom, and my words started slurring. I then started having uncontrollable muscle spasms in my face. My upper and lower jaw started moving in opposite directions so severely that I had to hold my face in place, screaming in pain! My husband had to rush me to the ER in the middle of a snowstorm. It was a horrific experience, and I cannot believe that this drug still exists! I was told that Compazine is used as a component in other drugs, BEWARE!"

"26 years ago, I was prescribed this for vomiting, and soon after I took it at home, I had a stroke (at 22 years old). You can imagine the trauma I went through. I was home alone with my infant when it happened. I lost all control of the right side of my body. I could barely speak. I got to a phone in the house (no cellphone back then, 26 years ago) and called my sister, who lived closest to me. She couldn’t make out what I was saying until I started crying, then she realized I was in danger, so she rushed over and got me to the nearby hospital. By that time, I was also beginning to swallow my tongue. I thought I was gonna die. I apparently passed out, and when I came to, I was hooked up to things. I was feeling much better from whatever they did for me and had told me I had a stroke. Because of how young I was, there wasn’t too much permanent damage. The right side of my face is still slightly lower or droopy than the other side from the incident, but my brain is okay. Scary!"
