For Laryngopharyngeal Reflux "I just started omeprazole about a week ago. I got prescribed it for my acid reflux. I’ve had the worst stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, and depression. I’d honestly rather have acid reflux than what I am going through currently. I truly don’t recommend this. But then again, everybody is different, and I'm sure it works good for some."

For Hiatal Hernia "If I could give this drug a 0, I absolutely would. I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia and GERD a little over 2 months ago when I went in for an upper endoscopy. I was prescribed 40 mg of omeprazole to take daily. I took this medication for 2 months constantly, and everything was great. My reflux was manageable, and I had no side effects. I then went on a vacation and forgot my meds, so I went about 4 days without them. Again, I was fine for those 4 days, I just took antacids to help with my reflux. It was when I got back home and started taking it again is when the side effects came on. I took it for about 2 days, and on the 3rd day, I was just standing around when I felt like I was going to pass out. My heart was beating out of my chest, and I felt like I couldn't breathe. I went to the ER, and they found nothing. I now feel constant anxiety/depression, stomach pain, nausea, muscle weakness, and sweating/chills. I'm going to wean off and eventually stop it in hopes of feeling better."

For GERD "I’ve been taking 40 mg of omeprazole for about a month now, and it causes bad stomach cramps and nausea. I was diagnosed with mild esophagitis. I feel terrible taking this medicine, I have insomnia. I am wondering how do you know if the esophagus is healed…"

For Hiatal Hernia "I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia many months ago, and my physician started me on this medication. Initially, I was nauseated to the point of vomiting (dry heaving) every morning and sporadically throughout the day, but now I’m mainly just nauseated in the morning and still nauseated throughout the day, but with less intensity. This also may be due to the weight loss, which has been approximately 30 pounds in five months. I have noticed that I have had a more difficult time with anxiety. I’m not sure if there’s a correlation. However, I do know that I need to change something or potentially have surgery in the future, as the quality of life is still unmanageable even with the medication, and perhaps it is making my mental health problems worse. Overall, I do not feel this medication has been beneficial."

For GERD "I was diagnosed with GERD by my doctor, and these pills helped to relieve some nausea at first. However, it turns out my GERD symptoms were being caused by an ovarian cyst, so I stopped taking these pills. I started taking them again after my doctor's advice, and my god... it was bad. The chest pains right between my breasts, spanning down to my ribs, were terrible. It felt so tight. It made me nauseous, lose my appetite, and even caused joint pain. I really think this drug needs to be looked into because everyone I know who's used it has bad things to say about it."

For Indigestion "I have been experiencing extreme anxiety, depression, confusion, nausea, and muscle spasms for a while now. I have been visiting my GP and haven't been able to find a cause. I have just found this page and now realize that omeprazole may be the cause, I never thought it could be the cause because it seemed to help so much at first. Just hope stopping, I can finally get back to normal."

For GERD "I'm allergic to iodine, shellfish, and that's 2 separate allergies. My 31-year-old daughter is also, but she's also allergic to Betadine. I was diagnosed with these allergies 6 years ago, my daughter was born with them. I have developed such severe food allergies, and so has my daughter, to the point everything we eat, drink, or take causes reactions. To my horror, I found out only 1 week ago that these chemicals are in all acid reflux meds. No wonder we are always so sick: throwing up, diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, asthma attacks, and throat swelling. Why is this not public information? We found this out through an ENT. BE VERY CAREFUL of these drugs."

For GERD "A few years back, I was having my first acid attack where I was nonstop belching and experiencing chest pressure relieved by burping. The doctor prescribed me a 2-week dose of 20 mg omeprazole. It worked like a charm, and I was able to go back to eating normal things. It’s been a few years, and for whatever reason, I had an attack again. I self-medicated my 2-week dose, as it had helped last time. Unfortunately, I only had a week of relief until the lump in my throat came back. This time I’ve been experiencing major anxiety as well as arm pain and constipation. Reading these other comments helped me realize I wasn’t crazy and that this is affecting me. I was also very nauseous one night. I am about 1 week into another 2-week course as instructed by my doctor due to the return of symptoms. I’m thinking I will stick it out due to the relief of my reflux."

For Duodenal Ulcer "I had slight burning pain in an area that my doctor thought was an ulcer or gastritis. It was radiating a bit to my back. Doctor prescribed omeprazole, 40 mg for a month, 20 mg for another month, 10 mg for the third month. Initially, it seemed to help, but I developed mild side effects that kept getting worse: flatulence, slight nausea, loss of appetite, tightness at the bottom of the rib cage, jitteriness, intermittent loose bowels and constipation, malaise, fatigue, increase in heartbeat upon moving, and toward the end, brain fog. I still had slight burning intermittently in the duodenum area. I’d planned to go off it soon anyway, but two days ago I realized that my life had become a misery and maybe it was the drug that was causing it! I’ve been off it for two days and I have improvement so far. If I had it to do over again, I absolutely would not take it for more than a month. Ridiculous drug."

"I spent 10 years suffering from chronic illness. Back, stomach, chest, joint, muscle pain, PVCs, irregular EKGs, headaches, nausea, colon infections, diagnosed with osteopenia, myofascial pain syndrome, degenerative disc disease, diastolic dysfunction, anxiety, and panic attacks. I tried to come off the omeprazole on my own, only to suffer such severe stomach pain and heartburn that I had to go back on the PPI. A month ago, after suffering another infection of my colon, I quit taking the PPI and talked with my gastroenterologist. She suggested I take 40 mg of Pepcid. Five days later, I became extremely ill and messaged her that it wasn’t working, I was going to go back to the PPI. She told me not to do it, to lower mg Pepcid. I bought 10 mg Pepcid Complete, taking one a day. For the first time in 10 years, I feel normal. It’s early, but how crazy would it be if a medication could have caused me to suffer such chronic illness for 10 years? Beware of taking this medication long term."

For Indigestion "Worst medication ever. After doing some research, I do believe I got esophagus candida from it. Got sick with probably the stomach bug, so the doctor put me on Prilosec. Took it for 3 months, couldn't get better, didn't realize all the side effects: nauseous, stomach pain, belching, gas. Can't sleep because of the nausea and even my very first major panic attack. Ended up in the hospital a month ago. My stomach was perfect, but not my esophagus, so I took my last 20 mg pill yesterday, so I hope this all goes away soon."

For Gastritis/Duodenitis "I had severe nausea and hunger pains, started taking Prilosec OTC, began to slowly help, and my stool became a little off. The doctor said gastritis/GERD, 40 mg omeprazole prescription, 30 days' worth. Within a couple of days, it went downhill, every trip to the bathroom was terrifying, had strange-colored stool, strange texture, was so much undigested food and mucus I thought I had something else and was dying. Not to mention the anxiety this medicine gave me was horrifying, would have insane panic attacks before bed, and every time the side effects hit, I would nearly have a stroke, my heart was racing so fast with nervousness. Various places in my stomach would burn and throb at various times, pain in my lower right abdomen and behind my ribs. I would have a sharp pain through my ribs and back that felt like all my organs were being destroyed right in front of me."

For GERD "So I’m still going through tests to figure out if my acid reflux is caused by GERD or an ulcer. Nonetheless, my doctor prescribed this for me in the meantime because I literally wasn’t eating, the pain was too great after eating. Day 3, I started feeling the headaches, and I’m going to day 7, and I’m completely a nutcase. I’m already diagnosed with anxiety and depression. Also, it doesn’t help that I have PMDD as well. This did nothing but ramp it up to 100. It’s the nausea and shakes for me that really did it, and the headaches really topped the cake. The dizziness is almost constant. I loathe this, I don’t think it’s worth it. Please look into alternatives with your doctor and advocate for yourself because they WILL try to convince you that this is normal, that you’re being dramatic. You are not. Your feelings and pain are valid. You deserve better than this poison. (20mg 3x a day/7 days)"

For Stomach Ulcer "I was given omeprazole 20 mg for a suspected stomach ulcer. I had diarrhea within 2 hours of eating anything, along with mild nausea and painful bloating, cramps, and burping a lot. I also had occasional chills and tiredness. My doctor told me the side effects would subside, so I stayed on it, but after 10 days, I booked another doctor appointment and was taken straight off the medication as I wasn’t keeping any food in me (maybe the reason for my tiredness). It took my stomach around 6 weeks to feel back to normal. Sorry for the TMI, but my stools were white for quite some time after, and my boyfriend said they smelled like a rotting corpse. The nausea and stomach pain took the longest to disappear. If you’re going through similar, your stomach should go back to normal. I never thought mine would at one point, but after 2 months, I was okay. My stomach didn’t get on with omeprazole."

For Gastritis/Duodenitis "I was prescribed omeprazole to help control my gastritis flare-up, although it was never specified if all my symptoms were due to gastritis in the first place. Anyway, I took omeprazole for about two days, and I felt better. Now I have been taking it for a week, and it seems all my symptoms, minus the diarrhea, came back in full force. If anything, I wake up normal, and as soon as I take the capsule, my stomach begins to go sour within half an hour, and I have to deal with that all day. I can’t eat anything because it threatens to come back up with my random bouts of nausea. I will stop taking it tomorrow to see if it really is the medicine causing these side effects."

For Gastritis/Duodenitis "I mean, I completely won’t knock omeprazole. It works. This is my second time dealing with gastritis and my second time taking omeprazole for it. Yes, omeprazole has side effects, and I know it’s from the drug because it’s been the same feeling both times. (Slight chest pain, trapped gas, dizziness, slightly elevated heart rate upon motion, and general unwell feeling). However, when compared to the worst side effects I get from gastritis (no appetite, constant nausea, cannot eat, I get severe anxiety that comes with it), the ones from the omeprazole definitely don’t seem so bad. I take it until I’m eating normally again and my stomach has healed, then I discontinue it. Usually about 3-4 weeks. All I can say is, yes, the side effects suck, but everyone’s different. My grandmother has been taking it for years for GERD and has zero adverse effects. Give it a shot, the worst it can do is not work for you."

For GERD "Just found this site today, and I agree omeprazole has made my heartburn go away, but the dizziness and worse than usual anxiety has got me saying no more. I barely drank very much alcohol, and the next day had a hangover way worse than I should have, and every morning I'm nauseous for 2 or 3 hours, so I think this stuff is no good. Zantac 175 seems to do the acid trick, so guess I'll stick with that."

For GERD "I started taking omeprazole 20 mg over the counter 4 days ago for reflux that I could feel in my throat. Upon starting the first dose, I immediately became lightheaded, dizzy, nauseated, gassy, bloated, and had a bubbly stomach. I also developed pelvic pain, constipation, and omeprazole seems to have “blunted” my need to “go.” I feel like my insides are inflamed and not working correctly. Yesterday, on my third day of using it, I ended up in the ER because I thought I was going to pass out. I was driving and got lightheaded, dizzy, and severely ill. The ER ran all sorts of labs and tests and said I was fine. I stopped the omeprazole because I’m 100% sure it is that! Now waiting for these horrible effects to go away!!!"

For Stomach Ulcer "This medicine was absolutely no good for me at all. Doctor suspected an ulcer due to some ongoing pain in a specific area. Within days of starting this, my brain was completely foggy, I had constant severe stomach pain, both diarrhea and constipation, nausea, horrible gas pains, and a serious headache that Advil couldn't even touch. I honestly felt so sick for so many days that I thought about going to the ER more than once, and it didn't make the original pain subside at all. I didn't immediately suspect the omeprazole, but then realized that starting it was the only recent change. Sure enough, within one day of stopping it, I'm much better. Still not myself at all, but I'm hoping everything will subside with a few days."

For Gastritis/Duodenitis "Tried this stuff (omeprazole) for about a month, since the doctor put me on it for acid damage in my stomach. The first day I was minorly nauseous with it slowly building up more each day. For the past two weeks, I have been waking up and vomiting for several hours, even if my stomach is empty. Yesterday, I was completely incapacitated due to the vomiting. I looked up side effects and saw nausea and vomiting, so I decided to not take it today, and I feel 100% better. Will not be taking this again."

For GERD "Wow, this thread shocked me. My fiancé and I have been frantically trying to figure out what’s wrong with me. I wake up nauseous, and I’ve even thrown up on occasion. It also causes horrible pains in the upper left side of my stomach right below my ribs. I felt so bloated, and I could not have a normal stool for the life of me. Constant constipation, constant misery, sleepless nights, and this all happened after just 8 days of taking it. I’m done with it, I recommend anyone else who’s taking this to do the same."

For Indigestion "I was prescribed this pill for heartburn/acid reflux I experienced as a result of food poisoning. I took this pill yesterday afternoon and experienced stomach pain, nausea, heartburn, acid reflux, insomnia, anxiety, and heart racing. I will not be continuing this pill! I take Pepcid or natural alternatives like baking soda, ACV, and aloe vera juice. This medicine also states that it does not provide immediate relief for heartburn. This was not a good experience for me."

For Gastritis/Duodenitis "I was prescribed omeprazole for ongoing nausea in 2021. After 3 months, I was advised to stop it. It had worked brilliantly, and I felt so much better. My symptoms reoccurred, and I was advised to restart and referred for gastroscopy, which I had in December, and it showed mild gastritis and duodenitis. Biopsies negative for Helicobacter, to continue PPI for several months. Reluctant to get 'hooked' on PPIs, I am now (nearly 3 months later) trying to reduce to alternate days, however, the nausea persists on the day without omeprazole, and GP suggests taking it daily and trying again 'in a few months.' I have had no adverse effects but am concerned about possible blocking of magnesium absorption, as I take this for heart arrhythmia."

For Helicobacter Pylori Infection "Had a positive H. pylori test. Symptoms were heartburn and indigestion. Given triple therapy, which included omeprazole 20 mg twice a day. Felt tummy felt better after three days of antibiotics, but then the side effects kicked in. Anxiety really bad, couldn't concentrate or work or look after kids: nausea, blurred vision, loss of appetite, sleep. The list goes on. I finished my one-week antibiotics and went on to take a further 8 days just to be sure I was OK. It sorted my heartburn, yes, and helped with acid, but I felt like I was going insane. Stopped taking them today, and hopefully my side effects were off. I'm just tired of it all now."
