For Indigestion "I was prescribed this for indigestion and a mild concentric ring on the esophagus. Was advised it was safe. I don't take any other medications and am healthy. Took for less than 4 months and the side effects started in the 4th month - tinnitus, depression, anxiety, panic. Never knew what these were until I took this. Stopped it straight away after researching this. The withdrawals were horrendous. Depression, anxiety, kidney problems - 2 antibiotics to treat. Lost over 2 stone in weight the first few weeks as I couldn't eat. Appetite returned after about 6 weeks. Went to see a functional medicine practitioner and am taking natural remedies that are helping hugely. I was glad to find this site and some others to know that this is what was causing all this. I am over 3 months out now and things are lifting. I read most people's recovery takes 3 to 6 months. I will never take this again, and I will research anything I am ever advised to take with a degree of intense analysis."

For GERD "Omeprazole is the worst pill. I took it for 3 weeks. I stopped taking it 2 weeks ago, and the side effects still remain (arm and leg pain, dizziness, insomnia, depression, vision problems). Do not take it!"

For Helicobacter Pylori Infection "I had a positive test for the Helicobacter and got told to take 2 loads of antibiotics (metronidazole and clarithromycin) along with omeprazole. I have felt so ill with all of this meds, but I carried on to finish the course to eliminate the bacteria. I finished the antibiotics on Tuesday, the 18th of August, but got told to carry on with my omeprazole twice daily. This tablet made me feel so ill with chills, dizziness, lack of appetite, brain fog, confusion, heart palpitations, tingling in my arms and legs, adrenaline at night, so I used to be woken up with my heart racing for no reason, insomnia, very emotional, low mood, my skin completions has gone yellow/pale, and a knot in my throat. I stopped taking this because of the side effects, and I hope by reading all the comments on here that the symptoms will go away and hopefully will get better soon."

For GERD "I had a bad bout of reflux, and the doctor prescribed 40 mg daily. I felt relief, but about 2 weeks later, I had blood in my urine. I went to the doctor right away because I was freaked out. I told them that I read blood in urine was a side effect, but I had to do an ultrasound to check my kidneys and bladder, as well as doing a urinalysis. Thankfully, all tests came back okay, and the doctor told me to stop the omeprazole. No more blood! I also had increased anxiety and thought it was just nervousness because I was sick. Now, after reading these posts, I think it was the drug."

For Indigestion "Omeprazole caused extreme anxiety, feeling like my life is a struggle, panic attacks, weight loss (10 kg in 5 weeks), palpitations, chest and arm pain on the left side, brain fog, weakness and chills in legs and arms, dizziness, nausea, general fatigue, numbness, flatulence, joint pain (hip) after gentle walks, forgetfulness, fear of eating. I have stopped cold turkey after having come across reviews of Omeprazole and Protonix, which I took as well. Took Omeprazole for 2 weeks, got these symptoms, told the doctor who changed the med to be pantoprazole (Protonix). The last 2.5 months or so have been the worst of my life so far, it has taken a toll on my family and work life too. The doctor thought I might need antidepressants given all the anxiety, but after around a week or so of stopping these, I am starting to feel a bit better. So, I am not going to take anti-anxiety related meds. It is a vicious cycle, PPIs cause depression, and then you take depression meds that are difficult to stop!"

Prilosec (omeprazole) for GERD "This medicine saved my life. I was in pain and miserable. Tried all the OTC stuff Zantac, Pepcid, Prevacid, and many others with no success. Then I tried omeprazole and within days I was better. Great medicine. Would definitely recommend."

For GERD "I had chest pains, thought I'd pulled a muscle, so took ibuprofen, which gave me terrible indigestion. I went to the doctor's, he gave me omeprazole. It worked wonders for about 3 days, then I started feeling sick. My body felt like it was shocking, I was cold, couldn't sleep, and I had terrible brain fog. I stopped taking it for 2 days, but heartburn was awful, so I started taking it again. I was prescribed 20 mg twice a day, so I thought I would just take one tablet in the morning. I was okay the first day, but by the second, all the horrible symptoms were back. I've been back to the GP, and he has given me Cimetidine instead. This was great for the first day, but by day 2, I felt so ill again. These meds are awful."

For GERD "Well, where do I start? I was experiencing a squeezing pain in the center of my chest and heart palpitations, and I was going to the hospital nearly every day. It was so bad that the pain felt suicidal like my heart was being squeezed. The doctors said it was probably acid reflux, which I thought was absolute nonsense because there was no real proof I had acid reflux. I'm 100% positive that acid reflux wouldn't cause this feeling I had in my chest. It felt more like it was heart-related. Anyhow, they prescribed me omeprazole, and I started taking it every day. After about a week, I felt like I was going to drop dead. Like no joke, I would wake up, and the feeling in my chest was unbearable like my heart was going to stop. I would wake up with a mouth full of spit, almost stopping me from breathing. I would have crazy chest pains, my heart would suddenly start beating very strangely, and I felt like any day could be my last day alive. The omeprazole also depleted my iron and vitamin D, making me anemic. It's poison."

For GERD "I was on pain medicine for a kidney stone, which caused severe stomach problems. So, MD put me on omeprazole for 10 years. Had severe pain in my ribs. Went to the doctor continuously, and he never suspected the medicine. Six months after I stopped the medicine, the pain in my ribs disappeared. Had severe pain in my shoulders and hips for 10 years. Was endlessly tired. The doctor never suspected the medicine. I went to him for years because of the fatigue. Another doctor finally diagnosed the side effect of B12 deficiency caused by omeprazole. Now I have osteoporosis and have had three broken bones in the past three years. Omeprazole caused me to have strong sugar cravings because I wasn’t getting enough nutrients to my body. I now have numbness and tingling in my hands and feet and may have lupus."

For Gastritis/Duodenitis "I started taking omeprazole pill at 20 mg dose. It took a while to take some effect but still had breakthrough burning. One and a half weeks into taking this pill, the horrendous side effects kicked in. I can’t even describe how horrible this medicine made me feel. I literally had the worst nausea imaginable. My stomach would literally spasm, convulse, and tighten. Body fatigue to the point of nearly passing out at work. I’ve never felt so sickly in my entire life. I lost my appetite. I lost weight drastically (20 lbs in the span of 2 weeks). My doctor told me to try 40 mg because of the breakthrough burning, and that’s when I nearly checked myself into the ER. My coworkers were very concerned with me not looking or feeling like my typical self. That’s when I stopped taking the pill cold turkey. Within a couple of days, I regained my appetite and started eating and feeling better with no more nausea and stomach tightness. Honestly, beware of this pill."

For GERD "Worst experience, only been 8 days, and I feel breathless all day! I’ve had so many panic attacks, which I think are because of the breathlessness. It has made me constantly anxious about it, then causing panic attacks. I have the worst headache, and my eyes just feel strange, only on 20 mg in the morning! And I’m stopping it straight away! I’m sure it works well for some, but it’s a no from me! My doctor told me to up it to 40 mg as it’s just my GERD, but I know it’s not!"

For Barrett's Esophagus "I was taking omeprazole for GERD and after 6 months of taking it, a primary doctor said to stop taking this for a while because of the long-term side effects. Of course, I did and only had occasional heartburn. But unknown to me at the time, I had developed Barrett’s esophagus and started having problems with acid reflux again. After an EDG, they diagnosed me with Barrett’s and to go back on esomeprazole 40 mg. But I didn’t stay on it for long because I was thinking about the long-term side effects. Wished I would have, really wished I would have stayed on omeprazole because now after a gastric ulcer, the surgeon discovered esophageal cancer. So after cancer treatments of radiation and chemo, I am currently taking 40 mg of this again, twice daily. I truly wish I would have stayed on it, thus possibly avoiding esophageal cancer."

Prilosec (omeprazole) for GERD "About three months ago, my doctor ordered Prilosec 20 mg for heartburn. I also have diverticulosis that caused me to have a burning itching discharge. By the time I had taken 42 Prilosec, I noticed the burning and itching had completely stopped. I am still taking one Prilosec every other day. I now need to know if I can take one 20 mg Prilosec tablet per day indefinitely without harm to my health."

Prilosec (omeprazole) for GERD "Prilosec has worked for me 90 percent of the time for the past eight years. My one and only complaint is: Why does it have to be packaged like it is gold? First, a large box with three smaller boxes in that, and then the pills individually sealed in foil sheets. What a pain to get all this open and just think of the amount of waste to the landfills. I called the company, and they said they do this packaging for safety reasons. Many, many more dangerous other meds are not packaged like this. Please get those pills into a bottle."

For GERD "I was diagnosed with acid reflux. I took 20 mg a day for 8 months. It worked fine, though I had a constant dull ache in my stomach. I decided to go off of it, and I had the worst acid reflux I have ever had. I could not eat for weeks and lost 25 pounds. I completely changed my diet to low acid, got rid of all sugar and caffeine. A month later, I slowly started getting better. It is now about a month since I stopped. My stomach is better, though it still aches. I do not have much acid. I do have lots of wind passing. My doctor did an endoscopy. Normal. He wants an MRI for pancreatic cancer. He did not believe me when I said that I thought the weight loss was from hyperacidity as a result of going off omeprazole (I read about this everywhere as a common side effect of cold turkey stopping) and recommended that I go back on omeprazole! I am so glad I am off this stuff and returning to a semblance of normality. Shocked that doctors are not concerned about this drug."

For Hiatal Hernia "I was taking Ranitidine (Zantac) twice a day until I heard bad news about it. Now I'm on 20 mg omeprazole once a day. I have been on it about 7 months. Very hard to pinpoint exactly how it helps, except one area. That is, the burning in my stomach is not as bad. I still have a lot of belching. Also, a feeling of something stuck in my throat at times, followed by coughing. And a shortness of breath. All seems to be tied to the same problem, hiatal hernia. But for sure, hardly any burning feeling in my stomach and no flaring up of my ulcer. The hardest thing for me to deal with is how well my meds are working on their intended targets because I take 14 different ones!! Bottom line, for sure, omeprazole does help my stomach area, acid, etc."

For GERD "I’ve never had anxiety or depression in my life. I started omeprazole after my doctor diagnosed me with GERD, and it is the biggest mistake I never knew I could make. This drug should be illegal, and I cannot stress enough to not use this. I’m currently off of it and trying to get my body back to a state of normality, with it being a struggle that I shouldn’t have to face."

For Stomach Ulcer "I was prescribed 20 mg of omeprazole for what I was diagnosed with last week as stomach ulcers. Within 4 hours, I had searing back pain. I’m talking labor pains strong. I thought my kidneys were having a bad reaction, so I drank and drank and drank water as much as possible. Another 4 hours later, it was 50% better, but then the panic and anxiety attacks set in. I thought I was crazy until I started doing research. If something seems odd, look up the side effects, as there are MANY!"

For GERD "I have been taking Prilosec for approximately 5 1/2 weeks because I had very bad heartburn due to a drug called naproxen (I have a hiatal hernia). Over the few weeks, I noticed that I have become extremely nervous, insomniac, have foggy concentration, and blurred vision. I was on Prilosec a few years back, and it did not cause this reaction. At one point, the doctor had me double the 40 mg dosage, and I was taking 80 mg a day. I lost my appetite and also lost approximately 30 lbs since I began this treatment. Currently, due to the insomnia, I am now taking sleep aids, which I do not want to be on either. I get approximately 3-5 hours of sleep a day. Today will be my first day not taking the Prilosec, but I want to know how long it was before people started feeling better. It says you should taper off, so I will take it every other day for about 1 week to see if I feel any better."

Prilosec (omeprazole) for GERD "I've had GERD since 1999 and, in 2016, I was being tested for all sorts of GI conditions because of the symptoms I was experiencing. My GI doc at the time told me to take Prilosec every day to control nausea and acid reflux. I took it for less than a week and had to discontinue because, every time I ate, I felt like I had a brick sitting in my stomach. It felt like the food would just sit there, undigested, and it was very painful. I've done better with other PPIs."

For GERD "Was put on 20 mg of this for about 2 1/2 months after experiencing intense daily heartburn and acid reflux. I had taken it before for only a week, and it helped, so the doctor prescribed it again. I have never felt what has been happening to me before. I stopped in May, and it is now the end of September. Anxiety, shortness of breath, joint pain, brain fog, and inability to focus my thoughts. Feeling unable to control my thoughts. Nausea, discomfort, fear, and hopelessness. When I first stopped, symptoms would be gone for a few days, then back. Around August, I would go weeks without symptoms, but about a week before my period, they would start coming back. Began seeing a functional medicine doctor who provided me with vitamin D, a trace mineral supplement, and iron, which I started taking in August. So afraid this is going to happen for the rest of my life, and I am a single mother. Any other woman experience an uptick in their symptoms around their period? This is a terrifying way to feel."

Prilosec (omeprazole) for GERD "I started taking Prilosec over 6 years ago. It was very effective at helping with the acid and GERD symptoms, however, my doctor prescribed two tablets a day (over recommended dosage due to the seriousness of GERD). I seemed to be fine until I started getting horrible spasms in my sides and intestines. I broke my ankle in March, and the spasms were bad, they worsened. I had my calcium checked, and I was dangerously low. We backed down to 1 Prilosec, and the spasms disappeared. So, watch your calcium with higher doses."

For GERD "This medication, omeprazole, was/is awful. Do not take. I’ve been taking it daily for almost three weeks because it does help with acid reflux-at first. After a few weeks of taking it, I noticed severe night sweats, stomach pain, blurred vision, dizziness, vertigo, nausea, vomiting-the list goes on. I had to be off work for two days because I was so weak/tired from this medication I couldn’t function. I didn’t feel like eating anything or drinking anything because I was afraid I would vomit it all back up. Your head feels terrible, worst migraine I’ve ever experienced, body rash... severe fatigue. I am going to stop taking it starting tomorrow and see how it goes. When I contacted my doctor, she seemed to think it was not a big deal. This pill is miserable. Do not take this pill."

For GERD "When I was diagnosed with GERD and put on omeprazole, it worked quite well, so I stayed on it. After taking the drug for 5 years, I had something happen in my chest area, like my heart fluttering, and I couldn't get my breath. It was like I was struggling for oxygen. This happened 2 other times and was very frightening. I changed to pantoprazole, and it hasn't happened since. I just wanted to know if this has happened to anyone else after long-term use?"

Prilosec (omeprazole) for Helicobacter Pylori Infection "I took Prilosec for a year and a half. I noticed that my whole body ached. My bones hurt, if I bumped up against a door, my arm was so sensitive. I felt like I was 90 years old. My joints ached, and my face lost any glow. My skin was dull, flat, and pale. Once I got off this, all those symptoms went away. I have bad reflux, to where I couldn't swallow or yawn. I now take apple cider vinegar each morning, and I'm fine. I take a couple teaspoons with a splash of water in a small cup when I get up, and it works! Get off Prilosec, it will age you prematurely!"
