Methenamine for Urinary Tract Infection "I have had great relief from using Hiprex for recurring bladder infections. I have a Medtronic device due to a distended bladder that wasn't allowing me to empty, but the Hiprex seems to help more than the device. If I miss it, I will get an infection. I take it 2x a day. I am interested in the advice to add vitamin C and cranberry. I take both, but not religiously or because of the Hiprex."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I have such difficulty with the limiting dairy. Do you still use dairy? I am not able to keep my urine pH where they recommend it either. How do you all handle these two things? Docs have me taking 1000 mg of vitamin C and D-mannose twice a day with it. I have constant stomach upset."

Methenamine for Bladder Infection "I was getting UTIs every couple of weeks. They made me feel very poorly, very quickly. Antibiotics didn't work, so my doctor put me on Hiprex. That was five years ago, and I've never had a UTI since. I'm afraid to stop taking them in case they come back."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Had a drug-resistant UTI and spent almost a year on 8 different antibiotic courses. Nothing has kept away the UTI until I started this Hiprex 1 mg 2x a day with 1000 Vit C. My side effects are intense, often disturbing dreams and a constant headache. It’s been 30 days, and I’m debating about weaning off because of the headaches but terrified of the UTI returning. Anyone else with headaches and bad dreams?"

For Urinary Tract Infection "I use a catheter three times a day. It caused frequent infections no matter how careful I was with insertions. Urologist prescribed different medications, but I continued to get infections. Then he prescribed methenamine... no more infections! However, I find that I wake up early anywhere from 2 am to 5 am and have difficulty going back to sleep. I do have frequent weird dreams. One night I dreamed of seeing very small moving creatures on the bedroom floor. I woke up when I landed on the floor. My wife said I did not fall from the bed... I actually jumped off the bed. This led to constant pain in my right shoulder. Got an X-ray... nothing damaged. Condition is finally improving, but I still have discomfort after 5 weeks. Hope this never happens again. Would like to stop taking this drug, but fearful the infections would return."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I have only been taking methenamine for a week. I was going to take one in the morning and one at night, but couldn't sleep at all, so have been taking one each morning. I just Googled if it was making my urine so acidic it was burning my urethra, and it does have that effect, so I shall drink plenty of water and see if that helps, and I won't drink cranberry juice as well."

For Prevention of Bladder infection "Before this Rx, I took Macrobid daily for a couple of years. When I changed my care from a male urologist to a female urogynocologist, the first thing she did was take me off Macrobid and put me on this med. I am so grateful. As long as I take this Rx as prescribed, I have no issues, no side effects, no bladder infections. So happy to be off daily antibiotics!!"

For Bladder Infection "I’ve had no side effects for this drug. Doctor put me on twice a day. It’s been 6 years now. I was prescribed along with other prophylactics because of other ailments. Bladder/UTI were side effects of other long-term meds. Hiprex helped control it."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I have a neurogenic bladder due to a spinal cord injury years ago. Unfortunately, I had to go to an Indwell Catheter which usually spells disaster for UTIs. Starting 4 years ago, I got a couple of UTIs a year, and then, after that, in less than one year's time, I had 5 in a row, three of them sending me to the hospital. Both my urologist and GP want to start me on a prophylactic of Macrobid. Well, before I did that, I tried d'mannose and that did not help. Most of us should know we should stay away from antibiotics as much as possible. After my 43 years of being disabled, I have had my share of antibiotics, and I didn't want to become resistant. I went to another urologist, and that's when he prescribed me Hiprex. So, in the past 15 months, I had one UTI. Sure, I'd rather have none, but one in 15 months is better than the five in one year. I have read on the Internet where Hiprex should not be working for me since I have an ID catheter. I take it with an emergen Vitamin C and wait one hour."

Methenamine for Urinary Tract Infection "Have had random recurring UTIs over the last 12 months, one leading to the passing of a kidney stone. Ended up in emergency and was given a strong antibiotic. That worked. This time, went straight to the pharmacist, and he recommended Hiprex. I took 2 a day, and it only slightly helped."

For Bladder Infection "In June 2023, I was intimate with my husband and went to pee afterward, and it burned. Didn't think much of it. Just drank some water, and then a few days later, urgency/frequency showed up, went to the ER, said I had an infection but the culture was negative. I took two different antibiotics. The first one made my symptoms worse, and the second one finally worked, but it took five days for the antibiotic to kick in and work. Little did I know, I would be getting the same infection every three to four months. After eight months of noticing I was getting recurrent infections, I decided to join the embedded/chronic UTIs group on Facebook and heard about Hiprex/methenamine. I have been on it since February 2024, and I have not had one infection. Cultures have always been negative for me, but I know I have a UTI. I have had flares, but Hiprex gets me out of my flares if I up the dosage. It has been so helpful, and I am able to live my life. I am hoping one day to be able to wean off and not have to take this medication anymore."

Methenamine for Urinary Tract Infection "Does anyone else find Hiprex is extremely salty? I put the first one in my mouth and had to spit it out again. Tastes vile. I've been salt-free since 1976, so it could be an overreaction on my part."

Methenamine for Urinary Tract Infection "I was experiencing back-to-back UTIs until being prescribed Hiprex. My only problem is I have trouble swallowing the tablet. It often gets caught in my throat. I don't have any trouble with swallowing other medication."
