For Prevention of Bladder infection "After 7 UTIs in 18 months, I went on antibiotics for 3 months, after which I started on Methenamine Hippurate. After about 2.5 months, I developed severe bladder pain and spasms typical of another UTI with significant incontinence. Urinalysis showed no signs of infection, I attributed the symptoms to a side effect of the drug and stopped taking it. While the pain and spasms have subsided, the incontinence has persisted for a month already. In my case, the cost and side effects cancel out any benefits."

Methenamine for Bladder Infection "Couldn't take these longer than 3 weeks, as they made my bladder symptoms so much worse. The burning and bladder pain are so unbearable, even after stopping them, the side effects are still there."

Methenamine for Urinary Tract Infection "I had a stubborn UTI for 6 months. I would take antibiotics, and it would clear up, then, when I finished the course, it would be back with a vengeance and was resistant to many antibiotics. Finally, a doctor put me on a two-week course of strong antibiotics to kill the bacteria off for good. It worked. The doc prescribed Hiprex to take to make sure the bacteria wouldn't take hold again if there was any still lurking around. I took Hiprex for two weeks-twice a day with 1000 mg of vitamin C and cranberry juice. It made my urine very acidic, which burnt my urethra and irritated my bladder, but it certainly cleared up any residual bacteria. I now only take a Hiprex dose after sex. That is all I need now to keep the UTIs at bay. Just make sure you drink heaps of water when you take it so your urine doesn't become too concentrated, or it may burn you."
