Methenamine for Prevention of Bladder infection "I am coeliac, so vigilant with diet. I have urine retention (300 ml). My specialist thought it was contributing to my recurrent urinary tract infections, so I started on Hiprex only last week, 2 times daily, along with cranberry juice and a probiotic, but I have had a UTI for 4 weeks. Initially on antibiotics for two weeks prior to starting Hiprex for the UTI, I have felt no improvement. I drink lots of water, no coffee, no dairy, or gluten. How long does it take before I can expect Hiprex to start to have an effect?"

Methenamine for Urinary Tract Infection "I am trying Hiprex again as I was not successful the first time. I check my pH levels, and I am free of infection at the moment. I started taking Hiprex as I so want a solution to a constant UTI. Within a very short time, I am experiencing burning and the urge to wee but can’t. I self-catheterize twice a day as I have an atonic bladder. Should I put up with the burning hoping it will stop???"

Methenamine for Prevention of Bladder infection "Hiprex has worked for me after I have suffered from UTI problems for over 4 years. A urologist said to use it when I feel I am starting with an infection, and I use it for two weeks, and it seems to stop any infection from progressing. Wish I had known about it earlier, as it has made my life so much better."

Methenamine for Urinary Tract Infection "Having suffered with UTIs for 3 years, so many courses of antibiotics, and ended up taking antibiotics daily, I had a cystoscopy and intravenous gentamicin. Returned to consultant for post-op follow-up who suggested I take Hiprex 1 gram twice daily. It is now seven months without a UTI, this medication has changed my life for the better. I have not suffered any side effects. I drink plenty of water and have increased my intake of berries. I feel so much better in every way. My next check-up is in September. Anyone who has suffered relentlessly with UTIs like I have, I urge you to request your practitioner to prescribe this medication for you. Take it every day as prescribed, morning and evening after food evenly spaced, and I hope it helps you too."

Methenamine for Prevention of Bladder infection "I have been on Hiprex for 2 years and only had 1 UT as opposed to a UTI every few months. My Dr. prescribed it twice a day, morning and night, with a cranberry supplement pill and 500 mg vitamin C tablet. It does taste terrible, but better than the alternative."

For Prevention of Bladder infection "I have been on this medication for a month and am so happy about this. I was getting UTIs all the time for over 15 years. This medication is a godsend! I have no pain or infections. My UTIs were so severe I had to go to the ER, couldn't wait for my MD. I do drink a lot of water with this medicine too, about a gallon a day. I highly recommend this medicine for chronic UTI sufferers."

For Prevention of Bladder infection "Went on vacation in the Dominican, came back with a UTI. Not the souvenir I wanted. I believe I got it from the filthy water I swam in. Haiti is on the other side and has no sewer system. If you swim with a tampon in and don't remove it right away, it will stew with the ocean water. I struggled for a year, and I ended up taking Ceftin for 3 months straight in order to kill the multi-drug resistant E. coli that had invaded my bladder cells. It took 3 months to shed the lining of my bladder with the invaded cells. My urologist put me on Hiprex for bladder maintenance. It works! I'm a med tech and dip my urine and look at it under the scope constantly, my urine stays acidic and no E. coli would want to take up residency."

For Bladder Infection "Just began methenamine for my bladder, and so far, so good, no reactions. Stay tuned. I have read many things about this drug, and many comments are about the awful taste, the size of the pill, and that it gets stuck in the throat. From the very first time I took the pill, I decided to use a trick from my Vet Tech years and coated the pill with a slight bit of butter. It goes right down, and no awful taste! Try it, you’ll like it!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "I also had a UTI for years starting at 16. At one point, I was only drinking water for years. I am now 39 and started methenamine 2 years ago, and it has been a MIRACLE. I was getting infections every 2 months before, but now about twice a year. I have tried to stop it and then got an infection. I started taking it twice daily for a year, but now am able to take it once daily, and it still works. Other advice would be to use baby wipes after using the bathroom and stop wearing any tight underwear or do not wear any at all, I don't. These tips do help. Most people who suffer from UTIs have short urethras, which cause bacteria to get into the bladder easier. I would recommend this medication for relief."

For Prevention of Bladder infection "I take the generic methenamine. I have not had any side effects and no new infections in months. After years of various antibiotics and recurrence in a few weeks, I am grateful this is still on the market. It was an infectious disease doc (not my urinary doc) who prescribed it."

Methenamine for Urinary Tract Infection "After menopause, I started suffering regular UTIs, which would disappear for a few days with antibiotics but would return after finishing the course. Only when I was referred to a Urologist and he prescribed Hiprex for me did I stop getting UTIs. It has made such a difference to my life, giving me the freedom to go out without fear of wetting myself."

For Prevention of Bladder infection "Just wanted to share my experience for others, as unfortunately, I had bad effects with this drug. I have had UTI infections for many years and had reconstructive surgery on my ureters, so I am prone to infection. When I started methenamine, I began getting painful urination and abdominal pain, which I thought was UTI again. I also seemed to start having a lot of swelling in my nose too. I got tested for infection, but nothing was present, and the pain was awful, I couldn't understand it. Decided to come off the pills, and my symptoms seemed to improve. I think I had an allergic reaction to them. Although I don't know what I am going to use to stop the infections now, I will have to speak to my doctor."

For Prevention of Bladder infection "I've been getting UTIs for over 20 years, ever since giving birth to my children. I've been on Bactrim for a year (until it stopped working), Keflex for a year (until that stopped working), and also Amoxicillin for a year (until that stopped working). At this point, I realized I was steadily developing resistance to too many antibiotics, and this isn't a good long-term plan. But without antibiotics, I was getting 2-3 UTIs a month. Finally, I discovered Hiprex (Methenamine Hippurate) and asked my urologist about it. He was fine with prescribing it for me. At first, it gave me headaches, but then I discovered that sometimes people experience headaches when they ingest both Hiprex AND caffeine. It has to do with increased vasodilation. So anyway, I gave up the caffeine and the headaches went away. I now take 1 Hiprex 1000mg tablet twice a day with 500mg ascorbic acid (vit C). Going on 1 whole year with no UTIs! Awesome! Be careful to keep urine pH below 6.5 and invest in urine pH test strips."

Methenamine for Prevention of Bladder infection "I have lower urinary tract disease. I previously had many recurring UTIs for many years. The urinalysis failed to grow cultures, so it was dismissed by the medical profession and treated with antibiotics. I was prescribed Hiprex by the urinary specialist nurse. I have not had an infection since. The LUTS was very painful and stressful, which I have suffered for many years."

Methenamine for Urinary Tract Infection "After 5 years of continuous urinary infections, with the last 2 ending up in the hospital on IV antibiotics, my doctor put me on Hiprex. It has now been 12 months and not a sign of infection. Never had any side effects, easy to take morning and night. I get it on a prescription, but you can buy it over the counter."

Methenamine for Bladder Infection "I was given Hiprex to try after recurring UTIs for a year. After taking 1 at night for nearly 4 weeks, I started getting a burning feeling, especially around the time of month when I get a flare. I was asked to stop, as the urologist said it wasn’t working. After 6 months and researching, I gave Hiprex another go with vitamin C 200 mg and half of Hiprex twice daily. The burning feeling went, and for 2 months I was okay, but recently got another flare, worse, lasting a few hours, and ended up taking antibiotics. If anyone knows if it’s worth carrying on with Hiprex, please let me know, as my GP was clueless. Thank you."

Methenamine for Urinary Tract Infection "I've taken this for 3 weeks. I've been more tired and had dry, itchy eyes. It's taken over 2 weeks, but the diarrhea has stopped. I'm hoping the tiredness does because I'm quite lifeless. I've not had a UTI yet, but sometimes feel like I could be getting one, and then the feeling settles again. So, I think this is working for the infections. I take my pH regularly, and if it's too high, I have some d-mannose with cranberry. I'm hopeful. I've had far too many antibiotics in the past which gave me thrush. This is killing the bacteria of both, so at last, I think I'm getting somewhere. I'll update if the tiredness goes."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I started having UTIs about a year ago. I’m 66 and had UTIs only once or twice in my life. I would take the regular medicine they give for UTIs, and it would go away. 1-2 weeks after taking antibiotics, it would come back. Finally, I was put on methenamine, and it worked. I am concerned about taking this medicine on a regular basis, but I have no choice. I have read that vitamin C, in combination with the methenamine, helps it work better, so I am going to take it too. I found this site by accident when I was trying to find out why this medicine is so expensive. It’s hard when you're on a fixed income, but I have no choice. It works, and I’m glad, I just wish it didn’t cost so much. $88 dollars a month."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I have had a bladder infection for almost two years. The doc has prescribed me every antibiotic to try and get rid of it. Then, he prescribed methenamine! Why did he wait all this time? I was on Cefalexin, stopped taking it, and then immediately went on the methenamine. As long as I drink a lot of water and take the vitamin C (1000mg), I have no symptoms! My urine is clear, no more yeast infections, and no more sore and irritated urethra. I did get lazy one day and didn't drink a lot of water, and around midnight my bladder infection came roaring back. I went back on the Cefalexin and got it under control. I took that about a week, and then went back on the methenamine. I will make sure I do not stop drinking plenty of water each day. I am sure that is why my infection came back. Will I ever get rid of my UTI permanently? I don't know, but for now this works!"

Methenamine for Bladder Infection "After having so many UTIs this last year and antibiotics not working, went to see a private consultant who recommended Hiprex. I have been on it for over a month and feel that I am getting my life back. Check my urine on a strip every day, and if slightly not good, take d-mannose as well."

Methenamine for Prevention of Bladder infection "I've been on Hiprex for almost 3 years, and during that time, I've had multiple infections of the urinary tract and bladder. I'm meticulously clean and will not go to strange public dirty toilets. I bought supposedly non-perfumed wipes, but actually, they had perfume, and I have now a severe urinary tract infection with a temperature and feeling very ill, even though I have Hiprex twice a day as prescribed by the professor in a hospital."

For Prevention of Bladder infection "After 7 UTIs in 18 months, I went on antibiotics for 3 months, after which I started on Methenamine Hippurate. After about 2.5 months, I developed severe bladder pain and spasms typical of another UTI with significant incontinence. Urinalysis showed no signs of infection, I attributed the symptoms to a side effect of the drug and stopped taking it. While the pain and spasms have subsided, the incontinence has persisted for a month already. In my case, the cost and side effects cancel out any benefits."
