"I started methadone in 2011, and it has been a lifesaver. I am currently on 100 mg of liquid methadone daily. Before I started treatment, I was using oxycodone 30 mg. Let's just say I had a $100 to $200 a day habit that I'm not proud of."

"Methadone has been a real life change for my husband and me. Without it, we would both be craving opiates all day. It has changed us to feel free from the old way of everyday living, to healthy people, free from pain and lust over a drug that would eat your life away. I'm glad methadone is out there for people who need it for whatever problems they may have. Drink water and take lots of fiber so you can be regular."

"I can't give methadone a horrible review as it does have its place. When you're bad off, it can get your life back in order. I've been on and off twice. Each time over 2 years on at around 130 mg usually. While on it, you can beat drug addiction, so it does save lives, but it comes at a cost. It's much more addictive than heroin, and I did a bundle per shot just not to feel sick (didn't get high) while off methadone in my past. Hard to believe, but it's true. Getting off of it is much harder. Regular opiate withdrawal lasts maybe 4 to 5 days. Methadone withdrawal can take weeks to feel normal again, making most return to the clinic or start to use again to kill the sickness. Even getting off slowly doesn't make it easy."

"I was on heroin for 16 years and eventually got on the methadone program (after a 3-year wait). Best thing I've ever done, 4 years later I'm free from the gutter. Any opiate user will kick it, no bother. If you keep to the rules, you will get on with the rest of your life, be human again. Be proud, be happy, and be rich again."

"I have had spine problems and surgery for 15 years. I could not sleep on my sides or back because the pain would generate through my hip and leg to where I wanted to scream. I had become immune to everything from hydrocodone to hydromorphone. I could take 30 mg of Percocet and feel nothing because my body's dependence had gotten so high, nothing would work. I also had gotten to have to take medicine to keep the withdrawals down, which felt like the bones in my legs and back were being pulled out of my body with a pair of pliers. The aches would only be resolved by laying in hot water, and that was from withdrawals and not even including the actual pain I was having with my spine. It was hell, and methadone took all of it away. Now I live again!"

"I have been on methadone for 5 years now. Without it, I would be a junky, drug addict. I never thought I would ever be off the drugs, but since I went on methadone, wow, it has totally changed my life. No more waking up every day, looking for my next fix. Thank God for this miracle drug. People who need it should at least give it a chance. You will be surprised how it works."

"I tried to wean myself off by myself, and it did not happen. I couldn't do it. I was fooling myself. So I knew there were these clinics, but I was scared to go. I said there's no way I'm like these people. I'm not homeless. I'm a good-looking guy. I have style, I have a good job. There's no way that's me. Don't judge a book by its cover. I've met at the methadone clinic lawyers, doctors, and police officers that are on methadone. It all starts from a simple pain prescription from a doctor and your life's over. Methadone has saved my life. I have a beautiful family, two dogs, a nice home, and a car. Life is manageable today. It's a miracle I'm alive. My dad, my uncle, and my cousin all died from this deadly disease of drugs. My family's name is going to carry on because of me."

"After becoming addicted to opiates, I tried numerous ways to quit: clonidine, detox, Suboxone, and methadone. Methadone is the only thing that truly helped me abstain from opiates, with very minimal side effects."

"I tried Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone) for an addiction/dependency to opiates and fentanyl. It unfortunately only lasted a month because I reached the highest dose of 24 mg, and it didn’t get rid of my cravings. After telling my clinic doctor that I relapsed despite trying so hard not to while taking the Suboxone, I was put on 30 mg of methadone and have since increased to 50 mg = 80 mg/day. It got rid of my cravings, anxiety, and helped my depression. This drug has helped me so much in my road to getting off illicit drugs, including opiates, benzodiazepines, and prescription amphetamines. (Recovery) There are cons/negatives to this drug that I do have to deal with every day. I have loads of sweat coming off me with only a 15-minute walk with my dogs, I feel sleepy several hours after taking my dose (also annoyed having to show up to the clinic every day to take it), and my dose sometimes doesn’t last the entire 24 hours like the doctor said it would."

"I have been addicted to opiates since August 2013. I began taking oxy 30's a few times a week because I felt it helped me with depression. I recently split up with my wife at the time. I was 33 years old and had never taken illegal drugs except for marijuana a few times. Within a year, I was injecting heroin up to six times a day. Drugs had completely destroyed my life. A friend that I work with attended a methadone clinic daily and suggested that I try it. I started going to the methadone clinic the last week of January. I have not used since I began treatment. My quality of life has drastically improved. Methadone treatment works. Pay no attention to the haters."

"I have been on methadone for 3 years now, and I can honestly say it has saved my life. If there are side effects to it, I haven't seen them, or they do not matter because I'm alive rather than dead, and I'm fortunate for that, the rest is minor in comparison. Everyone is different, but the main thing is being alive and free of drugs so that I can have a choice. Thank you, methadone, for giving me a second chance!!"

"I've had problems with painkillers mixed with real chronic pain problems for 20 years. Methadone has been part of the problem and help over the years. It works extremely well with pain. Better than most other medicines out there (and I've taken them all for pain at one time or another). It's pretty easy to come down to a very small amount daily, like 5 mg a day, but to break that last 5 mg pill is torture. And then you have weeks of feeling off and not yourself."

"As so many people do, I started taking Lortabs because I hurt my back at work. My job was passing medicines at a nursing home. When I started taking pills off the medicine cart, I knew I had a problem. I got fired because of it, and even that didn't make me quit. I struggled with my addiction for 7 years before I paid a visit to the methadone clinic. I was just about to lose my girls and my husband. I have been on methadone for 3 years. If I hadn't gone, I would be single and childless. I honestly think I would be dead if not for methadone. Thank you to the person who found it."

Methadone "Methadone Maintenance Therapy, or MMT, quite literally saved my life. Yes, there are side effects such as weight gain, low testosterone levels, and excess sweating or flushing. But now I am back in college majoring in Psychology with a minor in Neuroscience. I had been treated inpatient at one of the best hospitals in the country. They used Methadone initially to get me over withdrawal symptoms, along with other medicines such as clonazepam and clonidine. Sadly, I eventually relapsed, and it eventually took MMT to help me get back on track. I hope to use what I know about addiction to help others. It's not perfect, but MMT saved me and my relationships with my family. MMT should only be used as a last resort, it is not an 'easy way out'."

"Withdrawal from methadone will take at least a month. It is absolutely the worst withdrawal ever! It served a purpose by enabling me to get away from the daily search for pills and not getting sick. I got my life back together. However, be advised the coming off the methadone is going to make you so very sick! Taper slowly! It's like being punished for a solid month. There are other options available, and if I were you, I would explore them. Do your research!"

Methadone "I was taking 12 to 20 ROXY 30 mg a day for 5 or 6 years. It all started when I was in a car crash and then a motorcycle wreck. I was taking it for my pain to help me, and then when I tried to get off the medicines, I didn't know that it was going to be this hard. I thought just ''STOP'' and that's it, but no, I was so sick and so on. My friend told me about the methadone clinic, and I started to go there, and since then I have changed big time, and I know what I'm doing and so on. Thanks, God, for methadone."

"Since Oct. 12, 2005, my boyfriend and I started taking methadone to treat our opiate addiction. It has completely changed our lives. We have been totally drug-free since we started. I have not had any huge side effects, but my boyfriend had slight hot flashes. We both also gained some weight, but I'm not sure if that is from the methadone or not. I would suggest methadone treatment to anyone that has an opiate addiction and wants help."

"Methadone saved my life. It completely boggles my mind how people who have never had a problem with addiction can have such strong negative opinions about things they can't possibly have a thorough understanding of. I have been on methadone treatment along with counseling for a year now. I have made great strides at rebuilding my life. Read the statistics on relapse rates. It's terrifying. I know from my own personal experience I didn't get as low as I got or as sick as I got overnight. It took a long time to get that far down. I feel it's completely reasonable that it will take some time to heal and get back up. I feel some people need to stay on methadone for a couple of years, and some may need methadone for life just like a diabetic needs insulin. I feel it is different for each person. However, I now am living a clean, healthy, stable, productive life while taking my dose of methadone each morning. I am so thankful for the life I am making for myself. Methadone saved my life."

"All right, people, let's get a few items out of the way to begin. No, methadone does not 'rot your bones' or your teeth. Not taking care of your teeth and being nutrient deficient will rot your bones and teeth. Brush your teeth 2x or 3x a day, floss, use mouthwash, and take bone health supporting vitamins and nutrients, and that will help keep your skeletal system in good shape. Yes, methadone has an unusually long withdrawal period. Why? Because its half-life is very long when compared to other opiates; up to 60 hours versus some opiates with half-lives of 6 to 8 hours. Of course, the withdrawal period is going to be more pronounced and prolonged - it's basic chemistry and biology here, people. Methadone, put simply, works."

"So, to begin with, I was very skeptical because in the past I had taken methadone as another way just to get high. I was addicted to opiates for six solid years, and on my worst days, I was up to 200 mg of morphine a day. I know this is nothing compared to some people, but it was bad enough for me. I am dosing at a clinic now, and so far my experience has been exceptional. I am on 50 mg a day, but I work nights. I dose in the morning and sleep most of my dose away, but still am relieved from cravings all the way up to 1 am or so. I will continue to go up to find my baseline to completely cut cravings, but so far I have been able to even stop smoking marijuana, something I had been doing for even longer. For anyone in doubt, just give it a try."

"I was addicted to opiates for years and eventually prescribed methadone to relieve chronic pain that was combined with opiate addiction. This medicine saved my life. It allows me to keep a steady job and be a good mother to my girls and a good partner to my boyfriend. I no longer wake up every morning with that nagging thought of, 'OK, how am I going to make it through another day?' There's a lot of people who will tell you all negative information about this drug. Don't listen to them. I recommend talking to a doctor or clinic about this and staying in Narcotics Anonymous."

"Was prescribed methadone for withdrawal symptoms in 1979, and never realized how absolutely addicting this drug actually is. It can make one sleepy, and it doesn't make one 'high.' At the beginning, however, it can give what one person called 'a garrulous sense of well-being.' It takes away nervousness, but then one of the early symptoms of heroin/methadone withdrawal is a sense of nameless fear, a stomach-rolling anxiety. Over 30 years later, I am still on methadone, being 'encouraged' [is there a choice?] to transfer to buprenorphine. Long-term addicts who have made the switch seem to rate the buprenorphine 'clearer headed.' By the way, methadone needs very careful titration in the beginning. 'Start low, go slow.'"
