"I was a heavy opiate and heroin user from my teenage years until my 30s. After trying many inpatient and outpatient programs, I still couldn't stop using heroin. It got to the point my veins were useless, and I was wasting dope trying to put it in myself, so I tried the methadone program. At first, I was still using heroin with the methadone, but after awhile, I was able to let the heroin go. I have now been on 125 mg of methadone for 30 years. It has turned my life around. I started my own business. I raised a son, and I'm able to save money instead of being broke all the time. I doubt I'll ever get off the methadone, but that's okay. It hasn't caused me any physical or mental problems at all."

"I’m 50 years old now. I’m in the MMT program now for close to 5 years. The first two years I still used, but not every day. I finally stopped using heroin now for a few years. I got my methadone dose up to 110 mg. I’ve been doing a slow taper for the last 9 months down to 70 mg now. I’m trying to stay positive and not worry about how long it takes me to be 100% clean. If it took 2 or 3 more years, then so be it. Methadone saved my life, no doubt. I would be lying if I said I didn’t love heroin, but no one can live successfully on dope. I tried it, it never works. Just being honest. God bless and stay positive! Stay busy! Idle hands are the devil’s playground. Music is my new addiction (playing killer guitar riffs)."

Methadone "I've been on methadone for over 27 years, and all I can say is that Methadose saved my life. If not for the clinic I go to, I probably wouldn't be writing this opinion right now. This medication has helped me to lead a normal life after 15 years of addiction."

Methadone "Methadone is wonderful for opiate withdrawal and pain management. My doctor had prescribed me Percocets and OxyContin for a year for pain. When she cut me off, the withdrawals were too much. She recommended methadone for the pain and withdrawals. I have been on methadone for 1 year 7 months and been clean for one year since May 2012. The benefits include withdrawal and pain management, but side effects may include weight gain, but it does subside once you are on a stable dose, eat properly, and exercise daily. Good luck to everyone who is on methadone, it works!"

"My husband and I had a severe OC habit. He has chronic pain, and the doctor would literally throw painkillers at him - 150 OC's a month. I took them, as sad as it sounds, to get high. I thought, 'Wow, something that takes away my depression and keeps me going at work. I could work a twelve-hour day at the office, go to the gym, and have dinner on the table.' Then everything spiraled out of control. We almost lost our home to foreclosure as we were spending $500 a day on our habit. We even had to sell one of our cars to keep our home. We have been on Methadone for 5 months, and it has given us our lives back. I would recommend it to anyone with chronic pain, as my husband's is now managed successfully for the first time in 10 years."

Methadone "I was a heroin addict for four years, and I lost everything, including my family. Methadone helped me get my family back. If you are struggling with addiction, I highly recommend methadone, it saved my life."

"For anyone who is refusing to take methadone because of the daily visits and/or cost, just think - it takes a lot less time to visit the clinic every day than the time spent on contacting your dealer and scheduling a meet-up. Going to the clinic is also safer and legal, and in addition to that, they provide you with counseling and they teach you how to cope and deal with negative emotions in ways that do not involve opiates. The counselors teach you about healthy hobbies because boredom can kill sobriety. Don't be like the people that are trying to get high off of methadone, and don't let the mix of unstable patients that you commonly see at clinics scare you off from getting help. I know that it can make for an uncomfortable environment sometimes, but if you are compliant with the program, you will get take homes, and that's less time that you have to spend at the clinic."

Methadone "If I hadn't made the decision to begin methadone, I don't know where I would be. It wasn't an easy choice at all, but now I am so glad I did it. It's literally saved my life, my relationships, and my future!"

"The 1st time I got on methadone was because I failed at getting sober in withdrawal clinics more than 5 to 6 times, so someone told me about methadone. I tried it and was successfully sober for a year and then tried to withdraw and was not successful, wound down too fast, so went back. Now I have been on methadone for 7 years. I have noticed my testosterone level has gone down tremendously, but I have to say I have been sober, saved lots of money, and my life has been better. My counter says the secret is to learn to live sober, then learn to withdraw as slowly as possible. You did not become an addict overnight."

Methadone "It's helped me with my dependence, and it really works well to stave off withdrawal. The negatives outweigh the positives for me. This drug has caused me to gain a lot of weight, mostly from fluid retention. It's very hard to come off, you have to taper very slowly, like a mg a week, or you'll feel like crap. If you don't have insurance, you have to pay $400 a month where I live to go to a methadone clinic. This drug also cuts off your sex drive, I used to be a very sexual person, and now I have little to no desire for sex anymore. If you're on a high dose, on most days you'll feel out of it and very sleepy, so it's important that you tell your doctor/nurse the truth about your dose, you don't want to be on too high, nor too low of a dose."

"My experience with methadone is both good and bad. The doctor started me on a low dose at first and gradually increased me 8 mg every week until I met my dosing level at 150 mg. It did wonders for my life while I was on methadone. The reason that I rated it at 5 was because when I was ready to start weaning off, I didn't know how fast they were going to do it, and when I had my last dose, I had withdrawal symptoms worse than the heroin withdrawal symptoms. My recommendation to anyone who wants to get off any kind of opiates is to check yourself into an intense rehabilitation that will cater to your needs because withdrawal is real, and it caused me to have a mild stroke at the age of 31. Really, the best advice is to never use/abuse opiates."

Methadone "Methadone has once again helped me get clean for almost a year. I detoxed off of it 12 years ago, and yes, it was tough but possible. Take it nice and slow when detoxing and consider a blind detox so you can't convince yourself you're feeling a drop in your dose. If you can afford Suboxone, I would suggest that over Methadone for easier detox."

Methadone "Methadone/Methadose saved my life. I was taking 3-6 OxyContin a day intravenously. Ever since I went to the clinic and started taking Methadone/Dose, I no longer have cravings or symptoms of withdrawal. I can finally live again and not hurt the ones I love."

"This drug saved my life. I was an addict, but loved the narcotics especially. In the early 1980s, I got on methadone. They were concerned because I was a poly-drug abuser, so they kept my dose low. I jumped off once at 50 mg after being on for over six months and didn’t have any withdrawal symptoms! Then I got on a maintenance amount and I didn’t have a desire to use. I was on for about 3 years. When it was time to come off, I went down 1 mg a week from 50 mg. I made it through. I stayed clean. I was the only success at that time in a major city in the NW. Now, 30+ years later, I am in chronic pain and would like the same medication - a good med for addiction and chronic pain. Yes, withdrawal does last a long time, I’d give it 6 weeks, but for the last few weeks, it’s mostly fatigue. Chins up, peeps. One day you’ll wake up and it will be over!"

Methadone "After years of opioid pain medication for severe back trauma, I had to stop taking the meds as I felt myself not in total control. Methadone has helped me stop taking the opioid pain meds, thank God! It isn't a 'wonder' drug, but it DOES control cravings and sickness."

"I have been on methadone for 5 years now. This saved my life! I'm a 27-year-old male that's happy to be alive and healthy. Without this, I would be dead. I was prescribed 90 oxycodone 80 mg monthly and 120 IR 30s monthly. I would easily take all of these within 2 weeks, and that's not counting the scripts I would buy! I eventually turned to H. Worst thing I ever did. Listen, if you take methadone the way you're supposed to, it will work! I'm truly thankful to be alive today. I haven't relapsed since I started treatment 5 years ago! Good luck and God bless you."

"Never lost any teeth, been on methadone on and off since I was 20, am now 37. I was an IV drug user and had a problem smoking crack. I believe it is a myth that your teeth fall out. I have been clean now 6 years, nothing helped me but the methadone. The key to being clean is you just have to be sick and tired of running. After I had been homeless, they took my kids - I just got sick of it. I am currently on the same dose for years, been clean of all drugs, and have my children back. Methadone also helps me with my pain I experience due to 2 back surgeries. It saved my life and my family!"

"In the summer of 2009, I found out I was pregnant, yay... No, I was addicted to heroin and a large amount of it daily, I could not continue this as long as another life was growing inside of me. Methadone maintenance was my only option. I had my child on methadone and began detoxing right away, small amounts at a time, like 2 mg per week. It's been 5 years, and I went from 95 mg to 15 mg. There were months at a time I just chose to linger on a dose just out of fear of being completely off. I am doing fine, I'm a happy mom who lives a normal life, and looking at me would never see any hints of my past. I'm a completely different person and ready to be done. There is only 15 mg between my life now and the life I used to lead. It works."

"I was addicted to drugs for about 10 years. I finally hit rock bottom and really needed help and fast. So the local methadone clinic had me come in. I have now been on methadone for about 3 years now. Methadone has helped me get my life back and get my confidence back as well. If I hadn't found methadone, then I probably would have been dead or just miserable and wishing I were dead. But you also have to take into account that you are trading one drug for another. Methadone does help, but it is very addictive too. Most (not all) of the people that go to the clinic I go to abuse methadone and benzos. Methadone is hard to get off of, harder than heroin. Take this into account."

Methadone "I had a bad injury years ago, resulting in a rather large prescription for hydrocodone. So I was like, awesome, a legal script. Little did I know just how quickly I could become dependent. Soon it was oxy, roxy, morphine, luckily, no needles. Then it was all my free time, money, payday advances, check cashing, pure misery to just feel normal and not ill. I'm sure many have been through it. I had heard about a clinic close by, and it took away all the daily stress and saved me probably thousands of dollars. Hours of time and supervised help. It was my choice. I'm at 160 mg, so it will be a while before I'm completely free, but the progress I've made already is unbelievable. I've even told my parents. Best choice ever."

I hope this message gives someone reading this hope... Because believe me... It is an epidemic, but with the help of this medication, 'methadone,' you can make it. Thank you and God bless."

"I've been on methadone for 3.5 years. Currently at 90 mg. I only have to go to the clinic every 2 weeks. When I started on it at the clinic, I was in severe withdrawal. I never did heroin. I got methadone from a friend who went to the clinic weekly. After I was hooked, it was all over for me. I had no idea that it was that addictive until he was cut off and I could no longer get it. I only took about 20-30 mg a day then. But when he was cut off, I didn't know what to do. The withdrawal was just so awful and I still had to go to work full time. If I could do it over again, I would just suck it up. Now I have this ball 'n' chain and no end in sight. I had 2 kids on it too, so I get to live with that guilt too. Don't do it as a 1st resort. Just don't."

"I've been on methadone for 29 years. This is very important, all narcotics, especially methadone, will lower a male's testosterone! It took me about six years to figure this out, since then, I've been on testosterone treatment. After being on it for only six years, I had a bone density of someone 30 years older than me. God bless! And good luck!"
