Lubiprostone "I have had chronic constipation all my life. Every time I try something new, it will work for a few weeks, and then it's like my body gets used to it and it doesn't work anymore. I have been taking Amitiza for 4 days, 24 mcg twice a day. I have had 2 bowel movements, but nothing more. I did experience some side effects, especially nausea. Have to take while eating and drink a lot of water, but no miracles yet. I will continue to take and see what happens."

Lubiprostone for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation "Doc prescribed this medicine to me for my IBS problem. Sure, it did help with my bowel movement, but I ended up spending close to an hour in the bathroom due to the persistent pain! Into the 3rd day of taking it, it has caused me multiple horrible side effects - bloating, nausea, giddiness. The last straw came when the following day, it even resulted in vomiting! Would not recommend this due to the strong side effects."

Lubiprostone for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation "The first time I used this, it worked like a charm. But by the second time, I experienced the worst symptoms ever, it was more than the nausea. I had a chronic migraine for a week straight, and I felt extremely dehydrated. I was drinking 4 water bottles daily and had to switch to Gatorade because water was not enough. I also had extreme cramps throughout the whole day, I was afraid to leave my house. I figured it was my body getting used to it, so I took it once more, and I got extreme dizziness and the worst heart palpitations ever. What I’m assuming is that since this medication draws water into the intestine, it literally acts like a sponge and dehydrates you, which can be the main factor for all these horrible symptoms. I might switch to Linzess, but that causes severe diarrhea."

Lubiprostone for Opioid-Induced Constipation "The nausea hit within 20 minutes or so. I kept trying to vomit in the toilet, but just dry heaving. I was crying at the same time, and my poor cat was standing near me, crying, too. I was sick for hours and really thought about calling an ambulance. I laid down with a blanket and was shivering. This has been the worst experience I have ever had with a prescription drug. I feel so bad I will not be able to take my other meds tonight. I am afraid I will throw them up."

For Constipation, Chronic "I have suffered with chronic constipation for the last 9 years, it has got progressively worse, and I have literally tried EVERYTHING treatment and drug-wise, and nothing works anymore. I only pass BM when I have a weekly colonic irrigation, which even now is taking over 90 minutes to work. Lubiprostone was a last resort, I am 7 days into 24 mg twice a day, and nothing except nausea, sickness, the worst bloating I have ever had, to the point I can't breathe by the evening. My chest is tight, and my arms are having muscle spasms. I am despairing....."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation "After many years of treating IBS-C or slow motility problems with a regimen that included Miralax, Benefiber, and Magnesium, my gut motility suddenly got very slow, and each bowel movement was way too firm and took too long to pass. I ripped my anus a little, started using stool softener, and finally called my primary. She prescribed lubiprostone because it is a covered med, where Linzess is not. It was effective but did cause nausea and general tiredness. In the meantime, she ordered a blood test, and we found that my thyroid medicine wasn’t keeping up. An increase in that prescription has allowed me to slowly back off of Amtiza (generic) to once a week. I never stopped the M+B+Mg regimen. I did find, like others, that taking it near bedtime was the best way to avoid the nausea. Taking it with meals wasn’t enough. I had to pay about $1 per pill for this."

Lubiprostone for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation "I would be much happier if nausea wasn't a part of this. That's the one side effect that makes it hard to deal with."

Lubiprostone for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation "This is my second attempt with Amitiza (this time at the lower dose). Unbearably nauseated once again on top of the constipation and abdominal cramping. Does not work for me at all."

For Constipation, Chronic "Having two 8 mcg capsules daily, and it does work with side effects. I have had some headaches and nausea. It helped my constipation a lot, though. Bottom line, it works for me."

Lubiprostone for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation "Took this medication for one day, that might have painful diarrhea and a lot of gas. This is not a solution for IBS if it just gives you more pain. Do not recommend if you are able to have semi-regular bowel movements. It's just too strong. Gave me heartburn and nausea too."
