For Birth Control "I got my IUD inserted in June 2020 after being on the Depo injection for almost 2 years (I had my period once on the Depo). The insertion was very painful, I was extremely nauseous after due to the pain. After taking some Gravol and a nap, I felt much better and was able to go back to my regular activities. While on the Skyla IUD, I experienced a lot more headaches, acne breakouts before and after my period, mood swings, and an increase of discharge. For the first few months, I didn't get my period besides a little spotting here and there. Now, for the past couple of months, I've had a regular period with cramps that are still uncomfortable but bearable. And the most important part of it all is that I'm not pregnant. So far, so good."

For Birth Control "Skyla works great for me. Now, when I first had it inserted, it was the worst! I've broken bones and had kidney stones, and it wasn't as bad as the pain I had after it was inserted. I was sick to my stomach after and in pain, bedridden for a few days. The pain continued for about a month, lots of spotting. I will never get it again, but after the pain, it serves as great and easy birth control without worries."

For Birth Control "I know it's pretty soon to leave a review, but I had this inserted this morning (3-20-17). And let's just say I wish I would have taken a few Naproxen before the insertion. The pain of the insertion was about 4/10. But the cramping afterwards! My God! I threw up twice and was super lightheaded. But after a 4-hour nap and some painkillers, I was okay. I'm experiencing some mild cramps right now. I advise you to take off from work the day of insertion and grab some yogurt to prevent a yeast infection."

For Birth Control "I'm another, I don't normally write reviews, but I need to for this. 40 y/o NP. I received the Skyla 20 days ago while on my period. The insertion - weird, painful, almost stopped, but didn't. Afterwards was crazy. I had taken 600 mg ibuprofen an hour before the appointment. I was almost terrified by what I had read. After the insertion, I got up, went to the front desk to make my follow-up appointment, and started to feel queasy. My home is only a mile away and I thought, just need to get there. Got out of my car and fell flat on the ground, face first. Crying, it was awful. That all said, 20 days later, no issues at all. At this point, highly recommend, even after passing out!"

For Birth Control "I hate this thing! I've had it in for over 2 years, I got it after I had my daughter. Not the best decision I've ever made, and I'm having a hard time getting my doctor and my OBGYN to take it out, it's like nobody wants to. It has decreased my sex drive, made me hormonal, mood swings, depressed, put a strain on my relationship with my husband because of that. I can hardly ever get 'in the mood,' and that sucks. I'm 24 y.o.! Also the weight gain, the nausea, irregular periods, cystic acne breakouts on my face... seriously, I hate this thing! It has made me so miserable. I'm switching OBGYN offices just to get the damn thing out!"

For Birth Control "I have never felt a pain like I did upon the Skyla insertion. It was a 3-step process, and the second step was the most painful. They say it is different for everyone, apparently, my pain threshold is much lower than other women. This sharp pain and cramping caused immediate tears and a small yelp. Immediately after, I became very pale and lightheaded and had to use the restroom. I could hardly sit up in the bathroom because I was so lightheaded, and nausea caused me to vomit. I was so weak and honestly wanted to just lie on the floor because I began to sweat. After about 30 minutes, I was able to stand up and drive home. The cramps and nausea remained very severe until the next morning. Ibuprofen and heating pads helped me sleep that night."

For Birth Control "So, when I first got the Skyla put in, it hurt like a bitch. I screamed and cried, it felt like when they put the medicine in you from a shot, but times like 1000000000000000000000000000000. It hurts so bad, I almost passed out on the way home, slept all day, and was sick to my stomach the next. And ever since then, it has not stopped hurting. Constant cramps, constant bleeding. It's been about a month now, and the pain is not letting up! I went back because the pain was so bad, and my OB-GYN put me on antibiotics (which are now done) and pulled it down a bit, saying it might have been touching my uterine wall on the top because I have not had any children, so my uterus and cervix are small. That last visit was about a week ago, I still hurt so bad."

For Birth Control "I began this birth control around November. Insertion was awful; I threw up and passed out. It depends on the person, though! I'm not a huge fan of this birth control. It made intercourse painful in certain positions. It did increase my sex drive a lot, though. My skin is now a disaster; I'm pretty sad about that. I'm excessively tired all the time. I've gained 30 pounds out of the blue. I dunno, guys, this birth control just wasn't for me, and I'm switching back to the pill."

For Birth Control "I've had Skyla for about two months now. After insertion, I had really bad cramps (I'm pretty tolerant to pain, but these were the worst cramps ever). My flow hasn't really changed that much except I have spotting for about three days after I would normally stop bleeding. I have gotten my period twice since getting Skyla, and I've had pretty bad cramps both times, as well as nausea. Hopefully, everything will adjust soon so I don't have to be in such discomfort. But overall, I think it was worth it since it is one of the best forms of birth control and I don't have to remember to take it every day!"

For Birth Control "I have had the Skyla for two months now. The insertion wasn’t too bad. It hurt, but I knew it would be quick. I felt fine immediately after. However, when I got home, I had some nausea, threw up a bit, and had bad cramps. I just took it easy, and I felt better in the morning. The first few weeks were great, only a little spotting and bloating. My first period was so bad, mainly the cramps. I have never had a pain like that before. Soon after that, I experienced some pain and bleeding after sex. I just went to get my IUD checked yesterday, and the doctor told me it is fine. I am hoping these side effects pass. Overall, I think the effects are worth it to have such great protection against pregnancy."

For Birth Control "I am 29 years old and have never been pregnant or had kids. I've been on the pill for about 15-16 years consecutively. I decided to get Skyla because my husband and I are thinking about trying in 3 years, which would be perfect for the duration of Skyla. I just had it inserted today. My doctor had prescribed me the drug to soften my cervix, and I was advised to take 800 mg of Motrin before I came into my appointment. I experienced some discomfort during insertion, but mostly all of my pain was after. A lot of cramping, dizziness, and nausea. I wouldn't trade it for anything though, nothing to remember!"

For Birth Control "After insertion, I had very uncomfortable cramping for about an hour and a bout of high temp, sweating, and nausea. It's been 4 months since, and I have had a whirlwind of side effects. I had 3-day-long headaches, and medicine wasn't helping. Sore/tender nipples on and off for a few days. My hair began falling out. I mean A LOT-clumps in the shower and constant strands coming out. After a talk with the doctor, she said to give it 6 months to 1 year to adjust and take supplements for hair, skin, and nails. After all this, I'm beginning to have oily skin and a little more acne, and I usually have pretty clear, nice skin. The only plus side is it's convenient. I cannot tell if my libido increased due to this or less stress after graduating. I haven't noticed any weight gain, but I'm generally not happy with it so far and not sure how long I want to wait it out with all these symptoms."

For Birth Control "I had the depo shot for years and loved it but had to be taken off of it since I was on it so long. So they recommended Skyla. I was really scared because I had previously had the Mirena, and I ended up in the ER from the pain. But I decided since she said it was smaller to try it. The placement was extremely painful but keep in mind that I'm only 96 lbs and have a very small uterus. During and after placement that day, I had a lot of pain and dizziness and was pretty nauseous. But the next day, the pain has definitely gotten a lot better, and it seems like this will be a great birth control. I would recommend it, but I would recommend taking any pain medication before and after if you are a small person and haven't had any kids."

For Birth Control "23 + no kids. I went to the doctor and expected the worst. I took an Excedrin and 2 Advil beforehand. My doctor 'numbed me up real good' with four shots in the cervix. Four sharp pinches. Then measured me with a long probe, also not pleasant - the pain was probably an 8. Then she inserted the Skyla, which was uncomfortable and instantly made my legs go numb. She had me lay there until I felt better, and by the time I got up, I felt fine. I didn't feel nauseous or lightheaded. This followed with a night full of intense cramping and heavy (to me) bleeding, I took another 2 or 3 Advil. Friday, I woke up and went to work feeling brand new with light spotting. No bleeding Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, with the occasional light cramp. Loving it!"

For Birth Control "I have had the Skyla IUD for a full year now. When I first had it inserted, I basically felt very extreme sharp cramps. I became very nauseous and had to wait at the doctor's office before returning home. I was in a lot of pain, and the rest of the day I just felt sore. The pain continued for about three weeks, so I had to take a lot of ibuprofen. After a while, the pain was less frequent, but I experienced somewhat heavy spotting for months. Eventually, the pain and the bleeding were less frequent, only occurring when it was my period. However, the spotting is quite consistent (even still), and when it's not spotting, I have a brownish discharge. Basically, I always have to wear a liner or light tampon. And I occasionally experience cramping still."

For Birth Control "Preface: first form of birth control I've ever had. Well, the appointment and procedure were fine. Pap position, they cleaned my cervix, stretched it out, measured my uterus, and installed it. I forgot to take Advil prior. I think my doctor was expecting me to be dizzy and nauseous after, but I sat up immediately feeling the same as before. My only concern: strings. Doctor said I should check daily, I should feel them. I haven't been able to feel them, so I don't know if it's in or out. I would recommend having a laxative (Colrite from Rite-Aid) handy. My cramps were from being constipated. All of you ladies wanting this will be fine. As of March 3rd, 2016, I have experienced no headache, dizziness, nausea, nothing. I recommend Skyla."

For Birth Control "I'm 20, a college student with no kids. I just got the IUD Skyla inserted Thursday, October 15th, 2015. The insertion itself was quick but uncomfortable, as far as pain goes, I would rate it around a 7. But all in all, it didn't last more than 1 minute. So, now I am two days after insertion and still have mild cramping. Better than yesterday, however. My period has become lighter and completely stopped today. I am still waiting for the cramps to stop, but they are tolerable, my heating pad and Pamprin have been my best friend. At the end of the day, I don't regret my decision. I haven't felt moody, nausea, or any real side effects, just mild, period-like cramps. Other than the cramps, I am happy with my Skyla. I recommend it."

For Birth Control "Got Skyla inserted the day after my period ended. It hurt just a bit, like it should. (I've never had kids, btw.) I got lightheaded, nauseous, and the urge to take a dump (which I did right after). Within 30 minutes after insertion, I threw up 3 times & felt the need to just lay down, but literally right after that, I was fine...just mild cramping. I was able to drive home. I took 3 Aleve pills once I felt cramping (6/10). *Aleve is a lifesaver for cramps.* I continued to take the Aleve pills till day 3, and on day 4, I felt light cramping and started noticing a light lower back pain when laying down. It's day 7, and I just got in bed, I feel the light lower back pain still. (Since day 1, I've also had brown discharge, still do *no bad smell*)."

For Birth Control "I am 20 years old, and this is my second time using the Skyla as my birth control method, and I love it. It hurts slightly when it gets put in, and then cramping for a day or two, but then it's mostly bliss! My periods are very rare, maybe 3 or 4 a year, no severe weight gain or skin problems. My cramping is much more manageable than it used to be. I'm not pregnant and have never been, so obviously it works. It does, however, sometimes make me nauseous and have bad acid reflux, but other than that, I've enjoyed my experience with it."

For Birth Control "I have had the Skyla for almost 5 months. Prior to that, I had the Paraguard for 4 years. I was so fed up with bleeding for 8-9 days very heavily, so I decided to change to Skyla. I have had nothing but health issues since. Insertion hurt, and I continued to have horrible back pain for about a month, and now once a month. I started getting cold sores (never had) during PMS and my period, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. After two months, I got my first stomach ulcer (never had), which took a whole month to start getting better. After that, I started having diarrhea and stomach cramping, and it’s as if I am allergic to everything I eat! Two weeks ago, I had my annual eye exam and was told my optic nerves were swollen (never been told that before). I’ve had two bladder infections since I’ve had the IUD and lots of hair loss. This thing is coming out in 3 days, and I couldn’t be sooner. Please don’t ruin your health with Skyla."

For Birth Control "I had Skyla put in, and a week later, it had to be removed due to PID. I’ve never had vaginal issues (BV, yeast, STD) or anything before this was inserted. Day of insertion, I had terrible cramps and nausea that did not let up. By day two, I had no appetite, cried about everything (I’m a very happy, positive person), and felt so uncomfortable in my own skin. My belly was bloated to the point where I looked pregnant. Day four, I checked my strings, and my vagina is so swollen and sore I can barely get a finger in. Call OB the next day, and she says it’s probably an infection and to go to urgent care. Urgent care couldn't find the strings and sent me to the ER. The ER did an ultrasound and found that it was further up in my uterus than it should have been, but they managed to get it out without too many issues. I’m now being treated for PID. The doctor isn’t sure what caused it since I was tested for infections before insertion."

For Birth Control "Had Skyla inserted on Monday. 24, have never had kids. Took 2 Misoprostol orally beforehand. Never bothered by PAP smears or the transvaginal ultrasound I had during an egg donation. The manual dilation of the cervix & insertion was the most extreme pain EVER. WAY more painful than any cramp or tattoo; unimaginable pain. Took the doc 5 minutes. Pain didn’t stop. Had a vasovagal reaction; BP dropped, broke out in a sweat, was given cold compresses, told to stay lying down, super lightheaded & nauseous. Couldn’t focus on what staff was saying after. Pain was debilitating & severe Mon-Wed (7 hrs, 6 hrs, 4 hrs); made me bawl all 3 days. Been taking Advil & Tylenol Mon-today, doesn’t do much. It’s Thursday. Had 4 hours of cramps, not as extreme. 1st day I haven’t cried from pain & could get out of the house. I don’t care how effective it is, no one should go through this. If pain level drops to a bearable point by Monday, I’ll keep it, but right now I can’t function."

For Birth Control "I had no preparation. Never had kids. It hurt so terribly, and if I had known, I would have demanded a painkiller and tranquilizer before and for after! Don't care if it's 3 minutes. It's traumatizing and a betrayal of the doctor. Plus, nausea and aftereffects last 2 days. Plus, I should not have driven. I have had surgery, broken bones, and I'm not a wuss - I have endometriosis, so maybe it affects it - who knows - I was sweating, nauseous, and cramping for 48 hours. I've always had a bad period - so it's a little better pain-wise and not as heavy, but I bled weekly till recently (spotting, whatever). All I can say - the pain was bad enough to teach you that childbirth sucks."

For Birth Control "I've had Skyla for almost two years, and I'm very iffy on how I feel towards it. The insertion wasn't bad, just a big cramp. My period used to be only a few days, very heavy, and I never had cramps. With Skyla, I have light spotting that lasts twice as long, with some pretty TERRIBLE cramps and nausea. The week before I get the spotting, I have extreme cravings and gain like five pounds and then lose it all right away from barely eating the week I spot. I used to struggle with acne, and now my skin is always clear. My spouse is sometimes jabbed by the strings. I didn't want something with a lot of hormones, so I chose Skyla over other forms of birth control, but I feel like the cons may outweigh the pros for me."

For Birth Control "They gave me 800 mg ibuprofen before the procedure, and yes, the insertion hurt. Like a horrible cramp. But the cramping that followed the procedure (the first 20 minutes) was the worst pain I’ve ever felt. (Granted, I’ve never had children.) I made it to my car and started screaming. The pain was unbearable. I was crying. I couldn’t drive. I couldn’t think. I started throwing up. Then I think the ibuprofen kicked in, and I was able to drive home. But no regrets. So far, I’ve had Skyla for a week, and the cramps come and go. My period was normal, now I’m just spotting. But loooordy. Take some sort of painkiller before the procedure. The pain is no joke."
