For Birth Control "So, I had Kyleena inserted one month after my last son was born. I knew I wanted an IUD, and with Kyleena having a low dose of hormones, it seemed like the best option. The first 7 months, it seemed like I was spotting constantly and still getting my regular period once a month. After 7 months, the spotting stopped, but then came the acne. I started breaking out with painful, huge cystic acne and other small bumps all over my face, especially my chin, jawline, and forehead. It was awful. I decided to see a dermatologist and speak with my gyno, both said it was most likely due to my IUD. I got Kyleena removed and immediately felt 1000% better! My mood was better, I wasn’t hungry 24/7, and my face was clear 3-5 days later. It’s not for everyone! But I really wanted it to work for me so bad."

For Birth Control "I am a 21-year-old who has never had kids before, that was on the combination pill for 2 years and then the progesterone-only pill for 2 years. I can only have progesterone birth control, and the progesterone-only pill made me spot ALL the time. I really did not like that, so I wanted to try the IUD out to see if that would stop the spotting and not have to worry about taking a pill. I’m going to be honest, the Kyleena IUD insertion was the worst pain of my life and lasted about an hour afterwards. At the start, I kept thinking to myself this is the stupidest decision ever, why did I do this to myself? Because the pain was unbearable, although it ended up being the best birth control ever. I didn’t bleed after insertion, have only gotten my period once, and I’ve had it in for 4 months and have had no spotting! It’s absolutely amazing, I haven’t had any weight gain, acne, or mood changes! I almost forget I have it in. Best decision!"

For Birth Control "I had Kyleena placed on June 13, 2017. I have a very low pain tolerance, so I was nervous about how it would feel, but placement only lasted maybe five minutes and felt more like a period cramp than anything painful. I was very crampy and even a tad bit nauseous for the rest of the day. The next day was much better, and the cramping was gone by day three. I had some spotting every once in a while and random cramps, but nothing ibuprofen couldn't take care of. I got my period around my normal cycle time and it lasted 8 days, which is double the normal length, and then some spotting for 7 more days. I have noticed a little acne, but I use essential oils on the area and it's gone within a few hours. I go for my 6-week check-up in 6 days."

For Birth Control "So far, so good. Kyleena was placed on the last day of my cycle 3/8/17. Insertion wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It felt like the worst cramp of my life, decided to do gymnastics on my uterus. However, the pain lasted about 60 seconds. After that, it just felt like regular cramping. Ibuprofen was my friend for the first two days and helped with the cramps. I did have bleeding from the insertion, but it lasted only a few hours. Day 2 I spotted very lightly with minimal cramping. Days 3-5 I have spotted very lightly with minimal cramping, but also, not sure this is from Kyleena, but I do feel I have to urinate more frequently. I received Kyleena 5 days ago. (I will update this review in 30 days for sure)."

For Birth Control "I posted a while back talking about my experience. My insertion was not painful. It’s been about a month and a half, and I’m experiencing such painful cramps. I’ve always suffered bad ones, but these are horrible... has anyone else experienced this? I’m still spotting every day... give me some insight."

For Birth Control "I got Kyleena inserted as a form of BC and to lessen painful menses. The first go at insertion was very painful, and the doctor wasn't able to place it. The second time I went to get it inserted, they gave me a dilation medicine beforehand, and it went in like magic. If you have never given birth, I would recommend asking for this medicine to help with insertion (softens cervix). After 3 months of use, I have decided to remove it. It did help lighten my periods significantly/prevented pregnancy (I'd rate that a 10/10), but everything else I dealt with was not worth keeping it. I spotted every day, had mild pelvic pain, my orgasms/sexual pleasure dulled, and my worst symptom was my mental health. It made me feel depressed, and I didn't feel like myself anymore. Every day my mood has been up and down. It didn't work for me unfortunately because I guess I am very sensitive to hormones. I do think this is a great form of BC otherwise. I would recommend trying it if you are considering it."

For Birth Control "Had my Kyleena inserted yesterday after some extensive research and review reading. Honestly, was very freaked out, but followed my friend's advice (who is a nurse) and took 800 mg Advil about an hour before the insertion. Also made sure I had eaten, was hydrated, and tried my best to stay relaxed. The insertion itself was definitely uncomfortable, with some pretty severe cramping, but it only lasted a few seconds before subsiding to a dull ache. Cramping continued for the following 12 hours, but was never unbearable. My best advice here is to continue Advil/NSAID use every 6 hours or so and utilize a heating pad!!! There's definite spotting, and I expect it to continue for a few months (as my clinician noted) but so far is completely worth it. 5 years is a long time to not take a pill or get shots!"

For Birth Control "Hated it. After 3 months of having it put in, the chronic acne started. It made my skin oily yet flaky and dry at the same time. Constant acne, but also cyst-like acne. Massive spots that would refill and have a cycle of 10-14 days, leaving scarring. Also got random cramps and random spotting even after 7 months. Only good thing is that the periods were light, but not worth the acne. Had it taken out and exchanged for the copper coil, which I had before, 7 days ago. Still got acne and new spots coming. I don't know how long it will take for the hormones to leave my body."

For Birth Control "For starters, I'm 28, and I've given birth twice: one C-section and one vaginal. Reading the negative reviews on the insertion made me so nervous that I literally worried myself into migraines. The process lasted for about 5 minutes, and what I experienced was the discomfort of a pap smear with a quick pinch. When my doctor told me she was done, I thought she was joking. I went in expecting this excruciating pain but walked out so relieved. Super light spotting and very mild cramps. I will update in a month. Don't let the bad reviews scare you off!!"

For Birth Control "I’ve had the Kyleena for 3.5 years. For me, it hurts like anything getting put in. I had to ask my mom for a pain pill, which says a lot because I don’t even take aspirin normally. I immediately stopped getting a period, which has been great, but my weight has continued to climb (not saying it’s entirely due to the IUD, of course), and it’s damn near impossible to lose weight with it. My skin is still clear but very oily, and I lose a lot of hair in the shower. I had a hair loss problem with Nexplanon as well, so I definitely attribute that to the Kyleena. After 3 years, I suddenly started having cramps at random for weeks at a time and spotting frequently-still no periods. The depression has also gotten much worse over the years, it’s a struggle. I’m contemplating having it removed now that the side effects are suddenly ramping up. Overall, it was nice to begin with and has gone downhill as the years pass."

For Birth Control "So, I got my IUD Kyleena inserted about 6 months ago. When I first got it, it was the worst experience ever! I could barely walk leaving the doctor, I cried, and I almost passed out. The pain lasted a whole day. After, it slowly started to get better. I started to notice acne. My face had always been clear, and it sucks. I have experienced random hair loss and immense cramping. I still spot for a couple of days, then it goes away. I still have it in, but I am still deciding whether to have it removed or not."

For Birth Control "Got my Kyleena in May of 2019, it was inserted during surgery to remove uterine polyps (I had extremely heavy, long periods and low iron). I was very apprehensive at first because I've never used any hormonal birth control before and was afraid of acne and weight gain. The first few months were a little dicey, I had spotting every day for 6 weeks straight in addition to one period. However, this was much less than I used to bleed, so I got used to it. The worst part was the INSANE cramps I had, so bad I would cry. My doctor prescribed me some naproxen, and I just took that when it happened, and it got way better. Now, my periods are SO MUCH LIGHTER and shorter too! I still have gnarly cramps, but I'm really happy with my decision because my iron levels are up and I haven't had any of the other side effects I was worried about. I would say this is a positive experience."

For Birth Control "Took 2 Advil prior to insertion. The insertion hurts like a cramping feeling for a few minutes at the most. I was terrified after reading all of the reviews about how much it hurt, but it really was not that bad. Afterwards, I laid down for a couple of hours. I was in pain for a bit, but a heating pad really helped with the cramps. The next day/week I was able to work, no problem. A week with no problems, then I started to have some cramps and spotting. The spotting lasted on and off for about 6 weeks. Sometimes heavy, but mostly light. I am currently on month 3 with the Kyleena, and I am very happy. I cramp a bit when I get my period, but periods last maybe 2 days and are light bleeding."

For Birth Control "Tried Kyleena when I was no longer able to keep birth control pills down (would immediately vomit them up). I’ve had it for about a month now, and I hate this thing. Insertion was fine, just felt like a bad cramp. I definitely have side effects I never had on the pill, but the biggest issue is I started bleeding afterward and have not stopped even ONCE since. I was warned of spotting for 3-6 months. I was not told that I would deal with heavy bleeding every day for that time, and I’m definitely not willing to bleed for 6 months to see if it’ll eventually stop. I’m scheduling an appointment to have it removed."

For Birth Control "I posted about the insertion when I first got it, but for those of you who are just reading: It's NOT as bad as some of these reviews. I get that everyone's body is different, but personally for me, it wasn't any more uncomfortable than getting a tattoo, with some cramping the whole day after insertion. I had light spotting for about 2 weeks after, and since then, I have been perfectly fine! Also, I finally FEEL like having sex all the time! When I was on the pill, I was just numb all the time. The boyfriend definitely appreciates this IUD!"

For Birth Control "I've had the Kyleena since May of this year. It started off pretty rough. I had a lot of spotting, and I would get intermittent cramps a lot. My periods were all over the place. I stopped spotting after about 4 months. My periods started getting lighter, and now I have none at all. I do sometimes get a sharp stabbing pain around one of my ovaries. I got checked out by my gyno, and she said everything was fine. Overall, I would highly recommend it. Just be patient, it does take a toll on your sex life in the beginning since you are just constantly spotting, and when you aren't spotting, you're getting cramps, but overall, it was definitely worth it not having to worry about other contraception."

For Birth Control "Be prepared. Once you have it removed, to bleed like a Bloody Mary with worrisome clots. I had mine in for almost a year and started spotting randomly, so I had it removed, got my period right after, although I just got off before having it removed, then spotted some more, then out of nowhere started clotting heavily to where I went to the ER twice, had blood work, ultrasounds, biopsies, all of which came back normal. IT'S the stupid IUD ruining our bodies! It’s been a month and still bleeding."

For Birth Control "I had Kyleena for almost 1 year before having it removed about 1 month ago. I had no problems after my body started adjusting to it, and I normally cannot take any birth control 'cause it literally makes me crazy, fat, breaks me out, etc., but this one was working out for me UNTIL about 3 months ago. I started spotting every time after sex and just randomly. My boyfriend was always able to feel the strings, so I decided to have it removed, I was over the random bleeding and him being uncomfortable. As soon as it was removed, I started my period even though I just got off 2 days prior to having it taken out. That lasted a full week, then went to spotting that never stopped. Then I started bleeding heavily and hemorrhaging to the point I had to go to the ER 'cause I was going through 2 pads an hour with clots. Well, this has been going on for 2 weeks now, and I made 2 trips to the ER, had ultrasounds, blood work, went to my OBGYN, and everything has come back fine, we just can't figure out why I'm bleeding so bad and for so long."

For Birth Control "Insertion of Kyleena was the worst pain in my life. Unfortunately, I didn’t do my research before getting this IUD because it was an impulsive decision (I know I’m stupid). Then about a week in, was when horrendous acne started, and during the 2.5 months that I had it in, I had 2 yeast infections! I learned later on from my doctor that the yeast was able to accumulate because it thrives in wet environments (I was spotting for about 1.5 months while on the IUD). I don’t recommend this IUD. But then again, don’t knock it till you try it because everyone’s body is different."

For Birth Control "Update #2: 8 weeks in, my second cycle was great. It was light and short, however, I still have the spotting. It’s not bad, it’s more annoying than anything. I have to keep a liner on at all times. No cramps. I have actually lost a few pounds-a great big plus! My sex drive is the same, but it’s different with the spotting. I’ll be back in 3 more weeks with another update."

For Birth Control "I’ve had my Kyleena in for about a month now. Prior to that, I had the Mirena for about a year before it fell out of place. I decided to get Kyleena instead of the Mirena because Kyleena has less hormones; less side effects. Although the Mirena isn’t horrible, I did get major acne and gained 20 pounds. So, the Kyleena insertion wasn’t too terrible, it lasted maybe less than 3 minutes. I took two ibuprofen before, so that helped a lot, and I did breathing techniques (I recommend researching breathing techniques!) So far, I’ve experienced MAJOR cramps. It’s very random, some will be throughout the day, some will be just for five minutes or so. I’d feel like I wanted to pass out/throw up. I’ve also been randomly spotting (not consistent) for an entire month. I just had my first period, and it lasted two weeks; usually, my periods are 3-5 days. I hope the spotting and cramps go away! Those are my only major concerns. No acne or weight gain yet."

For Birth Control "I’ve had Kyleena for about 1.5 years now, and I’m happy I got it. I’m someone who was constantly worried about missing my period but didn’t want to take oral contraceptives. I will say that the first 5 months after insertion, I spotted heavily. It was very inconvenient. I will say now that I no longer experience spotting, but my period is still irregular. For insertion, I would recommend (if your gyno doesn’t) asking for a medication to soften your cervix beforehand. I took it too late, and the insertion was one of the worst pains I’ve ever had. It’s also because I’ve never given birth. Overall, Kyleena serves its main purpose as birth control, and I would recommend it to others."

For Birth Control "This Kyleena birth control is my very first one I have ever used, and it was wonderful because I can have sex without worrying about pregnancy. The only downfall for me would have to be the light spotting. I have had this inserted for about 4 months, and I am still bleeding constantly (lightly). I don't like wearing pads and liners every day, but I'm crossing my fingers my body will get used to the hormones later this month or sometime in the near future. I should also mention that my partner feels the string, so I will be getting that cut a little bit shorter."

For Birth Control "I got Kyleena inserted in October of 2017 after attempting to use oral birth control to reduce my very heavy and long period, along with severe menstrual cramps. I have a low pain tolerance, and the insertion was 'menstrual crampy' painful. Two days after its insertion, the majority of the cramps were gone, but I spotted for a week or two. After the spotting and cramping from insertion went away, all cramps and bleeding disappeared completely. Starting in December of 2018, I started to get some cramping and some spotting that would last about a day, but then would completely dissipate. As of June 2019, I typically get some cramping for a day or two, which is simultaneous with light enough bleeding that a liner can be worn. The bleeding lasts for 4-5 days. Overall, compared to how my periods used to be, Kyleena is a lifesaver. However, if you are looking to completely get rid of all cramping, bleeding, etc., on an IUD for a long period of time, Kyleena may not satisfy your wants."

For Birth Control "*UPDATED REVIEW* I've been on the Kyleena IUD for about two years, and it's been great to me. The insertion wasn't painful at all, and the recovery time was very minimal (probably like a day, but I got it on a Friday, so I took the whole weekend to relax). My periods are nonexistent, but sometimes I get spotting with mild cramping for a few days before it goes away. The cramping is much more tolerable than when I wasn't on any birth control at all and felt like dying whenever I was on my period. It's given me a little bit of acne on my chin, but really not anything super noticeable. I haven't had any 'accidents' unlike when I was on the pill. My partner says he does not feel it in me either, so that's a big plus too. It also hasn't messed with my emotions either, which was a big problem when I was on the shot, and it amped up my depression/anxiety, making me borderline suicidal. I have nothing but good things to say about Kyleena and plan to get it again when this one needs a replacement."
