For Birth Control "My only regret with the Kyleena is that I didn't get one sooner! I've had mine for 2 and a half years now, and recommend it to all of my girlfriends. Insertion wasn't terrible and is so worth it. The day of, it felt kind of like a quick sudden need to poo as it was being inserted, but only lasted about 5-10 seconds. Afterwards, it's just the usual period-style cramps. And then long-term, I really haven't had any side effects! Some spotting here and there, but my periods are extremely light, have never had any pregnancy scares at all, no cramping, nothing. All good, and so much better than having to remember to take a pill every day. If you're on the fence, do it!"

For Birth Control "I had the IUD in for 3 months before I took it out. Spotting is expected when you get the Kyleena, so I didn’t get it removed because of that. I got it removed because I had terrible migraines, and sex was painful for me. Every time my partner would thrust, it felt like he was hitting my IUD. My sex drive also decreased, sex didn’t even feel good anymore. My partner kept complaining about the strings stabbing him, so it was a turn-off for both of us. My doctor told me it’s better to leave the strings long so they can pull it out easier, and the strings should soften up over the months. So I got the IUD removed, which was easier than getting it inserted. Since then, all complications disappeared. Just because I had complications with the Kyleena doesn’t mean you will have the exact same. I highly recommend you try out the Kyleena because everyone reacts differently to different birth control methods. My friends are fine with the Kyleena IUD, sadly, it just wasn’t for me."

For Birth Control "I waited a long time to get an IUD because of all the horror stories online. I was planning to get a copper IUD, but after discussing it with my doctor, I settled on Kyleena. The insertion was quite painful, and I had horrible cramps for several hours afterward, but by the next day, they had calmed down, and since then, it's been great. I felt very, very emotional for a couple of weeks after it was put in, I'm assuming it was my body adjusting to it. However, since then, I've been so happy with it. I no longer get painful periods or ovulation cramps. I occasionally get very, very mild cramps and a little spotting. I've also had a bit of acne, but it has started to calm down. It's a huge relief having reliable birth control and no more extreme pain from periods."

For Birth Control "Love it! I dealt with the pain, spotting, and discomfort of a full-sized copper IUD for 4 years... all symptoms resolved within 2 weeks of removal. I tried the pill but had so many side effects. I had Kyleena implanted, and I have almost no side effects except very, very mild menstrual symptoms (spotting, no bleeding, mild cramping, mild breast tenderness). I didn’t expect my period to go away, but it basically has - again just very mild spotting. It's hard to find tampons small enough to use (lites). No issues during sex, cramping from implantation resolved within a few weeks. I wish I got one earlier."

For Birth Control "I've had my Kyleena IUD for a month and a half. I spotted on and off for the first month, but it's done now. I had a minor breakout on my face and neck during the first month as well. But now my skin is as clear as it was on Tri-Lo-Sprintec (generic Ortho-Tri-Cyclen Lo). I've not gotten a period yet. Insertion was not as painful as I expected it to be. I was able to get up and walk around just fine immediately after it was over, and then I went out to lunch. I had some minor cramps for the rest of the day, but some ibuprofen took care of it. I've not had any problems with weight gain or mood. In fact, my mood and energy levels have improved compared to when I was on the pill, I also don't have sore breasts like I did on the pill."

For Birth Control "After the insertion, I had mild bleeding then spotting for at least 2 weeks. I also had leg pain and lower back pain for 2 weeks after, just like the doctor said I would. The leg pain went away, but the lower back pain lasted for 6 months. I had major cramping every time I was going to have a bowel movement, never stopped spotting, had pain with a pressure-like feeling. My migraines got worse and more frequent, my appetite was lost due to feeling nauseous for the 6 months. I lost 10 pounds, felt foggy, and experienced major anxiety and depression with dark thoughts. The doctor told me these were 'weird' symptoms and asked if I was sure I wanted it out. As soon as she pulled it out, the pressure in my head left, and I can't wait to start feeling better. It sadly did not work for me."

For Birth Control "PLEASE don't let bad reviews prevent you from trying Kyleena! I got mine inserted on 09/05/17. Insertion was not painful. It was more uncomfortable than anything. Got mine inserted a week and a half before my period, and it still didn't hurt. I took 800 mg of Ibuprofen approximately 2 hours prior to insertion. After insertion, I had no cramps and spotted for about an hour. Everyone reacts to pain differently. So don't let the bad reviews keep you from trying this BC out. Will do updated reviews after 1 month and 6 months."

For Birth Control "So I posted a review about the Kyleena a little while ago, shortly after my insertion. Things were okay, I was a little crampy, and I spotted a bit, but things were okay. Then I got my first period on Kyleena. I ended up in the hospital not once, or twice, but 8 times in the course of about 2 weeks due to severe pain. I was told no cysts had burst, and the IUD was in the right place. No pain medication or management offered, just some unhelpful and disappointing news. Now I've had Kyleena for about 6 weeks, and I'm getting it removed in 3 days. I'm in pain 24/7, bleeding and spotting off and on, my antidepressants aren't as effective lately, and I'm losing sleep mostly due to pain. I can't do anything without triggering cramps, and if I breathe weird when I do sleep, I wake up with a searing pain in my cervix. The only positive thing I can say about Kyleena is that it's great at being a contraceptive because I'm too miserable to want to have sex."

For Birth Control "I had the Mirena in 2016 and had it in for about six months before calling it quits due to acne and spotting. I switched to the Paragard copper IUD, which was good at first but then severely increased the heaviness of my period, and my cramps became unbearable. Due to a medication I take, I had to use an IUD (the medication reduced the efficacy of regular birth control). By this time, the Kyleena existed. I have had no issues with the Kyleena. After about 6 months, I started having some light spotting and at times dark brown discharge, but that’s basically it. I am very happy with it."

For Birth Control "I got the Kyleena fitted almost 6 weeks ago. I went under to have it inserted because I had a few other things to be done at the same time. The worst part was recovering from the anesthetic, it made me sick and very tired. I then had cramping for about 5 days afterwards, on and off. Ibuprofen helped it. I bled/spotted for the first week, then it stopped until my next period. I got my period when it was due, it lasted a few days longer than usual (about 8/9 days instead of about 5-6 days), a little bit of cramping, but I didn't need pain relievers for it. The worst side effect I had was acne in the first few weeks following. I now still have a bit, but nothing too worrying. This is an awesome option, I hope it stays like this for me! I was expecting to deal with so much worse for the first few months."

For Birth Control "I switched to Kyleena from the pill (Kariva). Could not be happier about this decision! I was on the pill for 3 years, my complaints were weight gain (15 pounds), water retention, dermatitis on my face that I tried to treat for all 3 years, and I was also forgetting to take pills occasionally. The insertion was VERY painful, to the extent that I passed out during the procedure. I had to lie down for about 20 minutes before the doctor let me go. The rest of the day, I had very bad cramps, I couldn't work, and pain meds did not do anything. But the next morning, I was able to return to work. I had moderate cramps the next two days, and on the 3rd day after insertion, I was back at the gym. After 3 to 4 days, the cramps went away. I had a light period and have been spotting for about a week. More importantly, my dermatitis went away 3 weeks after insertion! Also, I have lost about 5 pounds in 3 weeks. Now, I don't feel the IUD at all, no pain, and I do not experience any side effects so far."

For Birth Control "I was on Kyleena for about two and a half years and have finally taken it out. The first year was great, with no period and no side effects. Then, about at the one-year mark, my symptoms started and worsened over time. I broke out in deep, painful cystic acne all over my face and body that could not be resolved. I also had severe cramping and had a few ovarian cysts form that I had no prior history of. Finally, in the last year, I spotted heavily every day. For whatever reason, this is not the right form of contraception for me. When it worked, I was a huge fan, but I will not be getting another one."

For Birth Control "Got my Kyleena on July 20 (4 days ago). Doc gave me misoprostol to insert the night before insertion, and I took 800 mg of ibuprofen an hour before. Insertion was mostly just uncomfortable, one bad cramp when she inserted the IUD, 3 or 4/10 on the pain scale, but only lasted for about 5 seconds. Went back to work right after, and had cramping the rest of the day and took some more ibuprofen before bed. I spotted for a day or two, but I was on my period when it was inserted, so if anything, it seems to have stopped my period. Had sex yesterday, 3 days post-insertion, and it was totally normal. Partner said he could feel the string a few times at some angles. So far, so good!"

For Birth Control "I went to my OB-GYN after experiencing heavy periods for years. Tried pills, and they never worked for me. So my doctor told me to try Kyleena. After weighing the options, I decided I would try it. Insertion was very painful, and I’m usually tolerant to pain. After insertion, I was told to expect on-and-off spotting for 3 months and then it would regulate. After I left, my period didn’t end until I got it removed. The entire time I had it, I had extreme cramping, almost like contractions. I also had extreme nausea, dizziness, bloating to where I looked pregnant, weight gain, and I was absolutely miserable. I went back for the string check and made them take it out. My doctor told me she has never heard of anyone having the reaction I had. I was so disappointed and do not recommend it based on my experience."

For Birth Control "I have Kyleena for a year now. I had it inserted a month after my second child was born and had no problem with the procedure. I chose Kyleena over Mirena because it has fewer hormones and you’re supposed to still have your period, what I thought to be closer to a natural thing. I bled and had light pelvic discomfort for three months. After that, I had irregular bleeding and spotting every single month. In one particular month, I bled so much I had to change pads every two hours, and the following two months after that, I had cramps and spots, but no real blood, which made me resort to a pregnancy test. I have also experienced very high levels of anxiety and some weight gain, discharges with a strong smell, cramping, and some acne. I really want it removed but need to decide the next form of birth control first."

For Birth Control "I got Kyleena inserted about 3 months ago, and honestly, it was the best decision I made for myself. I have kind of abnormal anatomy (large and antiverted uterus), and it did take my OB/GYN a couple extra minutes than usual to get it in the perfect place. I had little pain during insertion, which was like two intense cramps lasting 30 seconds, and I was fine within 5 minutes and walked home from the clinic with no pain or bleeding. My period came on schedule, but I did experience more intense cramping and heavy bleeding for two weeks, followed by spotting for 3 weeks, and then it stopped completely. I haven’t had a period since, and I am not pregnant. No cramping, no hormonal acne, no effect on my mood or weight, no effect on libido (just as high as it was before insertion), and no problems. It works great for me so far, better than the pill personally."

For Birth Control "I got my Kyleena IUD two months after giving birth to my son. The insertion was relatively painless, and I only experienced cramping for about two days and bleeding for three. However, a month later, I got my period, which lasted for an entire six weeks. It stopped for two weeks, but now I've been experiencing endless spotting for the past month. I've been extremely angry over small things and cried all the time. My anxiety has gotten so bad that I can barely go to work, and I experience random cramps and back pain throughout the day. I can't function normally anymore, and I want it out so badly, but I lost my health insurance, so I'm stuck. It's made me feel crazy, which is not who I am. I never used to cry or get upset over anything. It has taken a toll on my boyfriend, my friends, and my life in general. I am absolutely miserable, and I do not recommend it at all."

For Birth Control "This is the review I was looking for when I was considering Kyleena. I have had my Kyleena for almost two years now, and it has been good for me in the long run. The insertion is painful, there is no way around that. But it’s over in ~8 seconds. (I had just barely popped an ibuprofen beforehand and was not prescribed any of the numbing or dilating medication that some doctors will premedicate with.) The first few weeks I was very crampy and needed a pantyliner for the spotting. The first month to two months I was still occasionally crampy and still fairly spotty. From there, my periods tend to have gotten lighter and shorter. However, there have been cycles where I feel like I am PMSing for an entire month before my period. Otherwise, I feel more like myself than I have with any other type of birth control. No weight gain, no acne, no additional mood swing business."

For Birth Control "I’ve had Kyleena for about 3 months now. I’m 24 with no kids and was on the Depo shot for 5 years before switching over. I was off the shot for about 6 months before I got Kyleena. The insertion was uncomfortable, but I took 2 Advil and prepared myself for the worst after reading some horror stories online. I worked myself up over nothing. It was a pinch and a lot of pressure, but nothing I couldn’t handle. I was pretty uncomfortable and crampy the remainder of that day and was glad I took the day off because I just wanted to sit around and watch TV. Aside from light spotting on and off and some cramps every so often, I don’t feel any different. No acne, no weight gain, no mood swings. My partner can’t feel it during sex, and I check once a week to make sure I can still feel it, and that’s it! Simplest birth control ever and doesn’t have the long-term side effects like the Depo. Best decision I ever made."

For Birth Control "I got Kyleena inserted at the beginning of April 2019. The insertion is uncomfortable but only lasts a few seconds. I had mild cramping a few days after and my period 2 weeks later. From the end of May to the middle of June (about 2-3 weeks), I had light spotting every day. It is now December 2019 and I haven't bleeded at all since June. I scored it a 4 because I love the fact that I don't get my period, but it had caused a lot of acne for me. Before Kyleena, I never had any acne and would only get 1-2 pimples around my period, and now my entire forehead is texturized and I get cystic acne around my cheeks and jawline. I have tried topical treatments for this and take very good care of my skin, washing and moisturizing twice a day, but nothing helps at all because it is hormonal acne. I also have pimples on my back that were never there before. My doctor tried telling me this should go away but every month it keeps getting worse. For this reason, I am having it removed."

For Birth Control "I have had my Kyleena in for approximately 30 hours, and I am very pleased with my decision so far! I am 19 and have never had any kids or been pregnant, so I feared that the pain would be unbearable. Overall, the insertion was super easy, and I only had a tiny cramp during the whole process. I received numbing shots and took ibuprofen an hour before. I was able to immediately get up and ended up going to work about an hour later. Since then, I have only had a few minor cramps and some spotting. Overall, I am very happy that I didn't listen to some negative reviews and decided to go through with it! I will update if anything changes in the coming weeks."

For Birth Control "I had the Kyleena for about 7 months. It was a great birth control for not getting pregnant, but it was horrible for me! I had days where it was great, and I had days where I couldn’t even get out of bed because of cramps! The reason I got the Kyleena removed was because for the 7 months I had it, I had BV! I had 2 prescriptions from my doctor, which made it better, but after the pills were gone, BV came back. I then tried the boric acid PHD, which didn’t work at all. I had the Kyleena removed just 2 days ago, and I feel sooo much better. No more BV! No more cramps. It didn’t hurt at all removing it. I am spotting right now, but that’s normal! I would never go back to get the Kyleena."

For Birth Control "I've had my Kyleena in for a little over two months now, and I am LOVING it. I had on-and-off spotting for the first month (which I was told is totally normal), but after about 2-3 weeks, it went away. For insertion, I took 3 ibuprofen about an hour prior, and I think that helped a lot. My gyno discussed everything that was going to happen and told me when I may feel pain/discomfort. I do have a pretty high pain threshold, but my insertion went VERY SMOOTHLY - I had minor cramping (exactly when she said I would), but it was not even CLOSE to my period cramps. I give it a 4/10. For the reviews regarding excessive bleeding, remember that everyone’s body is different. Besides spotting, (which you probably know is common if you’ve been doing your research), I’ve had no issues. Because Kyleena is hormonal, I think it’s logical to assume that things might be off for a few months - give it time! I highly recommend the IUD if you and your gyno feel it is the right choice for you!"
