For Birth Control "I started looking into an IUD because my birth control pill was really acting up. I had been gaining weight, cramps were getting more painful, and mood swings were getting out of control. My doctor recommended Kyleena, and I am SO thankful she did. The procedure was 100% covered by insurance. I won't lie, the insertion hurts, and I experienced about three hours of intense cramping. There was light spotting for two months almost every day, which was annoying but manageable. Six months into having Kyleena inserted, I've lost 20 pounds. I experience some light spotting maybe 1-2 days a month, but no resulting cramps or mood swings. If you can push through those beginning couple of months, the benefits are so worth it, especially if you have been struggling with side effects to the level of hormone in pill contraceptive like I was."

For Birth Control "I’ve been on Kyleena for about one month. The insertion was absolutely not as bad as I thought. I took three ibuprofen before I went and asked if I could play games on my phone while it was happening. I felt a little twinge, but that was about it. The worst part is the cramping that you’ll experience after. I was barely able to work that night, but I still managed to. The side effects that I’ve been experiencing through this past month have been most prominently bleeding. Just spotting though, nothing like an actual period. Secondly, I’ve been experiencing cramping on and off, and it’s been pretty brutal some days, and some days I feel nothing. I’ve had two or three days where I have been pretty emotional, but I’m not sure if that’s from the IUD or not. I’m curious to know when I will stop bleeding and cramping. Looking forward to that day. I will keep you updated. So far, no pregnancy though, which is the whole point."

For Birth Control "IUDs are a wonderful option for many women. Unfortunately, something about it just did not react well with my body. Around months 4-7, the bloating, weight gain, and mood swings, especially irritability, started to take over. I noticed a 7-pound weight gain around 4 months and suspected that the IUD was the culprit... but I was also going through some depression in earlier months, which I thought maybe caused it instead. I was so easily irritated, and the bloating and rapid weight gain were affecting me so much that I didn't even want my boyfriend to touch me. I gained another 6 pounds in 1 month-13 pounds total. The bloating got worse, and I definitely felt myself gaining more weight. My doctor gave her 'medical opinion,' but I was not myself, so I got it removed. It's my 2nd day without, and I am having little to no bloating, which feels amazing, and I definitely see an improvement in my mood and energy already. Great birth control for women who don't experience the negatives like I did..."

For Birth Control "I got cramping, weight gain, higher sensitivity. I felt depressed, and after removal, I got even more mood swings, lost interest in my normal activities, had nausea, and hair loss. It has been 6 months since the removal, and I am irregular now. Also, my period went from lasting 3 days to 5 days of bleeding. I never had cramping before having an IUD, my breasts hurt, and I feel ugly like 3/4 of the time. I recommend you look for a non-hormonal IUD instead! I was never pregnant while I had it, but miscarried 3 months after removal."

For Birth Control "I used to be on birth control pills for over 5 years. I tried different brands and types but always seemed to experience negative side effects, such as weight gain, mood swings, dry eyes, aggression, and worst of all, migraines. When I started experiencing severe migraines on Yasmin, I was urged to try Zoely - after a month, my migraines went from being a monthly thing to becoming a daily problem. They were so severe that I had to stop working and wasn't allowed to drive anymore. My doctor then suggested Kyleena. I had my Kyleena placed while on my next period - insertion was really painful, but it only lasted a minute or so - the first day after insertion, I experienced some cramping but haven't had any side effects ever since. Choosing Kyleena is by far one of the best decisions I've ever made. I haven't been on it for long now, but I'm absolutely loving it."

For Birth Control "I am 18 years old, never had a kid. I've had my Kyleena in for about 2 months, and I am getting it out next week to switch back to the pill. I was on the pill for 3 years, and I wanted to change it up since I am in college now. The insertion was rough, wasn't as bad as I thought, but it was pretty intense. I was okay with the IUD for the first week, then the cramps came, and I had severe everyday ones to the point I would cry, hold my breath, and almost pass out. I planned to keep it in for 6 months to a year to give my body time to adjust, but I don't think I can handle it anymore. I had my period for 6 weeks, had a week break, now I'm back on it, and I have no idea when this will end. I also went from having normal to dry skin to becoming an oil pool. I have hormonal acne, which I never have had before while taking the pill, and I feel so dirty. I have weight loss of about 10 lbs. I can't gain back, and I think I am still losing weight. My anxiety has gone up as well, and I have mood swings."

For Birth Control "20 years old, sexually active. Was on Tri-Sprintec (oral contraceptive) for 4 years prior to Kyleena. My body was regular, periods were fine, etc. Got some occasional cystic acne and had some mood swings, so I decided to switch it up. Looked into IUDs and talked to my doctor. Discovered that Kyleena was best for me. When I tell you Kyleena was one of the BEST decisions I've ever made... girl, I mean it!! I've had it for about 5 weeks now. The insertion pain was pretty sharp, not going to lie. To me, 15 seconds of serious pain is TOTALLY worth 5 years of peace of mind. Only downfall is the irregular light spotting I've had. Nothing major. May not even have a period, I guess. My emotions are 10x more stable now, I don't have to remember to take that pill every day, and I've lost 7 pounds!! Kyleena was a blessing, to say the least!"

For Birth Control "I got my Kyleena IUD about 3 months ago, and my experience has been great so far. The insertion was not nearly as bad as I expected... my gynecologist is very gentle, and I think that made a difference. I also was prescribed to take a drug that 'softens' your cervix, and I think that helped to reduce the pain as well. I would rate the pain about 6/10, and it only lasted literally 2 seconds. It didn't hurt as bad as a Brazilian wax! I had moderate-severe cramping the first two weeks, and I spotted as well for about 2 months. It is now time for my period, and I have had no bleeding at all so far! Just slight cramping and occasional mood swings. No pain during sex at all! I love the freedom it has given me from taking the pill. I definitely recommend."

For Birth Control "I have had Kyleena for one year, and it is great. I am 42 with 2 children. The doc used local anesthesia for insertion, which minimized pain. Got some really bad cramping about an hour after-took 2 Advil and gone within 30 minutes. Occasional yeast infection, but that would happen regardless. No issue with weight gain. Cycles were 1 to 3 days longer than normal within the first 6 months, but now have returned to the usual 28-day cycle. Hardly any bleeding post-insertion or monthly-still get some spotting for 1 to 3 days, but barely enough for a panty liner. Lessened PMS symptoms as well. No issues with weight gain, hair loss, acne, or mood swings. Definitely works as effective birth control that is effortless. Highly recommend. Wouldn't read too much into negative reviews. Everyone reacts differently. The pill never worked for me. Horrible weight gain, thick cervical mucus, and no sex drive. This had no such effects! Quite the opposite, in fact!"

For Birth Control "I hate this thing!!!! Freaking hate it!!! This is by far the worst choice I ever made with my body. All I do is bleed. I don't get a break. I had my first period since I got this put in, and I'm still bleeding. This is the worst!!! I've had it for almost 5 weeks, and I can't have sex, which contradicts the point of me having birth control. I am miserable, and I have really bad mood swings. I do not recommend this for anyone. I go through 3 pairs of panties a day because of how much I spot, and I have really bad cramps from time to time. This is the worst experience I have had in my whole life. I have never been so miserable."

For Birth Control "This is truly the worst birth control I've ever had. I used to take the pill and never had my period for more than 4 days. Now I get my period for weeks at a time, twice a month. Not to mention the insane mood swings and anxiety I experienced after getting this. And intense cramps for the days leading up to and throughout the duration of my period. Do not recommend, it keeps getting worse!"

For Birth Control "I had a different brand of IUD, but three months ago I had it replaced with Kyleena. I have had different side effects than with my previous IUD. I had on and off spotting for the first few weeks after insertion. Eventually, it stopped, and I haven’t had a period since. So far, roughly two months without one. I have been very emotional, more than usual, right before I’m supposed to be on my period. I have also had more acne than usual, too. That bothers me, and if it gets worse, I might consider removing it. I’m surprised that it’s causing these side effects since this isn’t my first time having an IUD. But I think it’s important for others to know it can affect you even if you have had a different hormonal IUD."

For Birth Control "I got it in June 2020. It hurt a little, but not bad. My period didn’t go away, but no problems. Fast forward to November, bleeding daily, severe cramping, like sword-sharp pain, which is really bad! Got moody, fighting with my boyfriend over everything, depression/anxiety getting worse, meds not helping. My OB said pain and bleeding were normal, so I went a bit longer, getting worse. My regular doctor referred me to a different OB who told me it’s normal and to take ibuprofen 2-3 times a day to stop the pain and bleeding - it didn’t. Meds increased and added, still getting worse. Came across a horror story, so I started digging for info. Then talked to the doctor again, he sent me back to my OB. Went four days ago and had it removed. The OB gave me a hard time, but I kept saying I want it out. That sword feeling in my uterus? GONE! Mood? Completely turned around! My boyfriend and brother both noticed a huge difference that night, and my sister could tell the next morning. I have to adjust to not having the hormones from the IUD, and the removal kickstarted a period, which I 1000% expected, but I feel so much better!"

For Birth Control "I would absolutely not recommend this IUD to anyone! After only a week of having it in, I started breaking out! (I have never had acne in my life before, not in high school, and not even before my periods.) Within the 3 months that I had it, I’ve been taking progression pictures of my skin, and each week or two it would just keep getting worse and worse. I’ve been spotting ever since I’ve had it installed and have experienced cramps, as well as horrible mood swings, as well as depression and anxiety. Please, please stay clear of this and maybe consider another form of birth control!"

For Birth Control "I have had the Kyleena for almost a month, so I’m not completely out of the woods. But I would like to share my experience with insertion pain, etc., to assure everyone that it is not horrible like many others have said! I was petrified before I got my IUD inserted because many women were saying it was worse than childbirth. I will admit it was moderately uncomfortable, BUT nothing that could not be tolerated. The cramping afterward was that of a bad period cramp. So far, I would HIGHLY recommend, especially if the pill caused emotional and/or stomach issues like it did for me. Everybody's perception of pain will be different. I was so paranoid because of what the internet said, but my experience was far more bearable. Please consider!"

For Birth Control "I had my Kyleena inserted the beginning of February, the initial insertion process was similar to painful period cramping but otherwise manageable. Following insertion, I had very extreme mood swings for the first two months. I was crying every day and would fly off the handle for no reason. The first month, I did not get a period, but for the last four months, it's been consistently 10 days long, with spotting the whole month. I've developed severe cystic acne on my back and chin. I'm debating having it removed."

For Birth Control "I'm using the Kyleena for 6 months now, and it's the worst decision I've made. Placing it was very painful, but the side effects of this contraception are the worst. I have my period now 14 days in a row, I'm emotional, unstable, and cry every day. My sex life is 0.0 since I'm always bleeding or crying or having pain. I'm thinking about removal since I gave it already a half year..."

For Birth Control "I've had this IUD for three months now. And I'm getting it removed ASAP. I had previously been on Mirena, but my doctor found a way to get me the Kyleena for free, so I thought, 'why not give it a try, it's free and has less hormones?' Even before I started taking birth control, I never had cramps, and I only had a few zits throughout my adolescence. I am now 25, and after having Kyleena inserted 3 months ago, I have the worst cramps ever AND I have horrible acne. I get super emotional right before and during my period, which also never happened to me. I gave it two stars because it has prevented pregnancy, and the insertion wasn't that painful (it was uncomfortable, but that should be expected). Every body is different, so some people may actually enjoy this IUD, but I did not. The reason I am writing this review is just to let people know that if they are considering switching from Mirena to Kyleena, think twice!"

For Birth Control "I’ve had my Kyleena for 6 months. I would say that my experience is mostly good. I can’t tell if the insertion is painful because I got mine at the same time as an abortion, so I was under mild anesthesia. For the week after, I had small cramps and spotting for around 7 to 10 days. My periods (which used to be very painful and around 5 days) are now only spotting for 2 days and very small cramps 1 or 2 days before or during the actual period. Overall, I would say I am very satisfied. The only 2 downsides: mood swings and bloating. The mood swings I can live with, but the bloating really annoys me. Not to the point of getting it removed, though. I’ve had trouble with my weight a good part of my life, and when I’m bloated (usually 3 days per cycle), I “feel” (I don’t weigh myself) like I’ve gained 20 pounds. And usually, the mood swings are around the same times, so it really gets to me and makes me feel the worst. But my overall experience is good."

For Birth Control "I previously had the Nexplanon implant and experienced ongoing bleeding the entire time. My provider suggested Kyleena since I never had any children. I had it inserted in February 2019 and it wasn't a good experience. I got lightheaded at some point and had some cramping for a day or two. I am at the 2 1/2 month mark, but I can say that I'm already happier with the Kyleena. I bled for two weeks after insertion, but it slowly stopped. I get a period around the same time each month. The downside is they last about 6 to 8 days, but for me, it's better than bleeding nonstop and I have no cramps and some soreness in my breasts, but nothing that persists or is unbearable. I experienced some body acne, but I noticed that that has faded in the last few weeks as well. I noticed I had a lot of mood swings with the Nexplanon, and my sister has even told me she noticed an improvement in my attitude (she could have been poking fun, however). That's my experience, and I know everyone's experience is different."

For Birth Control "I got the Kyleena IUD due to not being able to take the pill every day at the same exact time. I am 19 and got the IUD inserted in November of 2018. The insertion was painful, and the ibuprofen the doctor provided did nothing. Before getting the IUD, all I read was good reviews and had only seen a couple of bad ones. I’ve now had the IUD for four months and have had ups and downs with it. I have had to visit my OBGYN five times due to discomfort and pain, but she claims it is still in place. I spot here and there. My cramps are horrible. My mood swings are horrible. The only thing not horrible about it is my skin is clear and no weight gain. If anything, I have lost 20 pounds and feel weaker every day. Since I had it inserted, I have heard nothing but bad reviews. I now know people who can’t even conceive children due to the IUD thinning the lining of the uterus. I am considering removing it."

For Birth Control "I chose Kyleena because the pill increased my mood swings, and I wanted to 'set it and forget it.' I highly recommend Kyleena to anyone in a similar situation. I'm 25 years old, in a long-term relationship, and I'm busy (i.e., too lazy/forgetful to take a pill every day at the same time). It was painful when inserted, but only for a day, and my doctor prescribed me some high-dose ibuprofen. I used to get bad cramps during my period, but they have lightened. The first two months, I lightly but consistently bled. He can also occasionally feel the strings when we have sex, more so the first 6 months. Occasionally, I get sharp cramps in what feels like my ovary or uterus. I don't know if they are cysts or the IUD poking my uterus, but it never happened before my IUD. It could also be menstrual cramps, but those are my theories. Otherwise, I love my IUD! It gives me peace of mind. I love that my boyfriend and I don't have to use the risky 'pull-out' method, and it makes sex so much more spontaneous!"

For Birth Control "For anyone scared for the insertion: I'm 18, no kids, and I got it inserted, hurt pretty bad, but for 5 years of birth control, it's worth it. Some cramps and pinching the next day and very mild cramps the next. I had the Nexplanon implant and it made me gain 30 lbs and made me emotionally unstable, basically, so I decided the lowest hormone IUD, which is locally absorbable, should be fine. Good luck!"

For Birth Control "I'm sharing my experiences with Kyleena almost two weeks after insertion. For those who had minimal pain, I envy you. My insertion was brutally painful, and I almost fainted. I spent about 40 minutes in the room trying to collect myself to take an Uber home. Once home, I had a horrible cramp that lasted a few hours and went away after. I had zero spotting for the first week, light spotting going into the second week. However, my biggest complaint with it so far is the massive cramps I've been experiencing that give me nausea and dizziness and the incredible bloating. I look like I'm about 3-4 months pregnant every day. My sex drive has completely gone down, and I feel more emotional throughout the day. I'm assuming there definitely is an adjustment period to it, but I'm hoping it's over sooner rather than later."

For Birth Control "About the only good thing it's done is kept me from getting pregnant. Mine was inserted Oct 1st, 2017. I had horrible periods before, and they're even worse now with the IUD. Cramps that cause me to take time off work (Midol, heat, nothing helps), my period went from being able to wear a super tampon for 8 hours and never bleed through, now I'm lucky if I can even make it 4. I used to have my period for 5-7 days, now I have it for 7 days, with 5-6 days of heavy spotting afterward. My skin is greasy, I have horrible acne, which I've never had an issue with until now! I've gained 10 lbs at least since October, mood swings like crazy. If I didn't have this stupid sensitivity to estrogen, I'd just go back to being on the pill because this is ridiculous."
