For Birth Control "This is an update on my Kyleena that I have had now for 1 year. So far, I LOVE it! No symptoms for me, except shorter periods, much shorter, like two days max, with bleeding that doesn’t even require a pad because it’s just when I wipe. No acne, no weight gain, no mood swings or any of that, just a great birth control that has so far prevented pregnancy! I highly recommend this, and the insertion process wasn’t painful at all!"

For Birth Control "I hated this. The whole experience was a nightmare. The insertion was fine for me. The night and day after was horrific. I had to take a prescription painkiller and sleep to even get through the pain-worst bleeding and cramping I’ve ever dealt with. My periods were all over the place the entire year I had the IUD. They would come without warning and with a consistent cycle. I developed several cysts and was told this is just what happened with the IUD. My doctor told me to make it to 6 months. So I did. At 6 months, I was fed up, thought it was dislodged because of a sharp pain I was feeling in my abdomen. Nope, just cramping with the IUD. My doctor told me to wait it out another 6 months, so I did. And it just got worse. The cramps were horrific, and I got on this to help regulate and help with my periods. After a year, I had enough and got it removed. I gained 25 pounds, my mood swings were out of control, and the pain was horrific."

For Birth Control "I had insertion of Kyleena on 02/03/2019, and since then, I have been patiently waiting for the side effects to subside. I had bleeding after insertion that turned into a full-blown period lasting 18 days. It seems to be common that my period comes at the same time every month and still lasts almost 3 weeks. Even when I'm not fully bleeding, there's always some type of smelly discharge. Haven't really been able to have sex without feeling insecure about blood or smells. Super annoying, I guess it is effective birth control since you can never have sex without a period interrupting you. I also have the worst cramps and bleed heavier than I ever did on my regular period. I did lose weight, but I have increased anxiety and mood swings. I considered taking it out sooner, I really wanted this to work, but all of the side effects almost aren't worth it to me."

For Birth Control "I had the Kyleena for two months before I had it removed. Everybody reacts differently to different forms of birth control, and this one is not for me. My body is very sensitive to hormones, including those in IUDs, which are less systemic than in oral contraceptives. What I liked about the Kyleena: insertion only felt like a bad cramp, my periods were lighter and cramp-free, no weight gain (actually experienced weight loss from my own effort to prep for spring break), my well-endowed partner did not feel the strings, and I did not get pregnant. Why I had it removed: depression, anxiety, mood swings, insomnia, heart palpitations, and lack of motivation. A week post-removal, I finally feel like my normal self again. No more hormones for me."

For Birth Control "Not sure how I feel about Kyleena. I had light periods at the beginning of November, and nothing since, so no periods or spotting for 7 weeks. When I was on Mirena, I always had light periods. I get constant cramps as if I was going to get my periods, but nothing. But with the Kyleena, my mood has changed, though. I get irritated, I feel depressed, I got zits (which I have never had before), I cry way too often for things I usually wouldn't. I've called my doctor. Something is not right."

For Birth Control "Okay, I just want to start off by saying I LOVED my Kyleena-until I didn’t. Also, everyone has a different experience! I had it for 1.5 years, and during that time I didn’t have any mood swings, weight gain, or any major side effects. I still got my period, but it was lighter and easier to deal with. I loved how low maintenance it was, and it was a great option for me and my husband. Unfortunately, it moved out of place (I never noticed, and I checked my strings religiously), and I got pregnant. I ended up miscarrying a few days later, and the whole experience was traumatic. I am sad that Kyleena didn’t work for me, but I know lots of people love it. I definitely won’t be getting another one."

For Birth Control "Let me just start out saying this is the absolute worst birth control ever! I mean, I’ve only had one other birth control and it was the Skyla, and that was way better than this. It’s killing me, I got it put in in May 2018, and it’s been downhill ever since. I have the absolute worst weight gain ever! I’ve been depressed, and my mood swings are out of control! I do not recommend this birth control at all. Plus, I’ve been experiencing the worst migraines, and I’ve never experienced headaches before. It 100% sucks. Being put in did not hurt me at all, I had cramps, that was it, but everything from then on, I just kept gaining and gaining weight. I need a new birth control."

For Birth Control "I've had Kyleena for about 3 months. Insertion wasn't bad, just some cramps for an hour or so. Overall, this has not been worth it for me. I have never had more than one pimple at a time on my face, but after getting Kyleena, my face is covered in zits. The worst of all of it is the mood swings and terrible anxiety. I don't feel like myself at all. I cry about literally everything. I get random bouts of intense anxiety and panic attacks and serious irritability. Getting the IUD taken out next week. Will not go back on hormonal BC after this."

For Birth Control "I got my Kyleena in October of 2018, and it wasn't very painful to get put in at all. I think that aspect really depends on what you're like pain tolerance-wise. I liked it a lot at first, I was able to have sex with my boyfriend and not worry about anything. I spotted a little bit for the first six weeks, mostly brown weird discharge that was kind of a turn-off. That cleared up, but then I noticed I had started to gain weight and feel INCREDIBLY anxious ALL THE TIME. I didn't know this was a side effect. I struggled with it before, just a little bit, but not to the crippling point it is currently at. My libido also tanked, and that defeats the whole purpose of even having it for me. I love the ease of knowing I'm not pregnant, but the insane mood swings and depression and anxiety are absolutely NOT worth it to me. I have an appointment to take it out six months after insertion, and I am so excited for the light at the end of this anxiety tunnel."

For Birth Control "I used to be in love with my Kyleena because I didn’t get a period (maybe only 5 times in the past 2.5 years). I had never been on any other birth control prior to being on this and, unlike a lot of reviewers, didn’t experience a lot of pain during insertion (although I’m worried about the pain when it comes out!!!). But after reading these reviews and my own experiences, I desperately want my Kyleena out! I’ve been experiencing pretty awful cystic acne (on and off) that I’ve had to go through rounds of doxycycline, minocycline, and spironolactone for. Besides that, I’ve been experiencing extreme anxiety and panic attacks, which I never dealt with. After reading reviews, I realized that I’m not alone. Before Kyleena, I experienced a few years of awful severe cystic acne and had mood swings but never anxiety attacks. I would not recommend this medication if you have some of these issues too."

For Birth Control "I had Kyleena inserted back in September of 2018 due to PCOS. Insertion was easy and pretty pain-free. It’s more of a discomfort than actual pain. Within the first week, I noticed INSANE mood swings, like someone I had never been before. I mean, I’ve had cranky, bad days like any other, but this put a whole new meaning to RUN!!! My OB assured me these would subside within a month or so. NO! Try, I’ve now taken 2 different depression meds due to this Kyleena IUD giving me side effects of making me go insane! I went from a random period here and there to monthly 3-week-long periods with intense pains as if I were in labor again! Yes, 3-week-long periods with cramps that sent me to the ground in pain! Those pains have started to subside, this is now December 2019. I have been losing my hair as well. I am scheduled to have it removed in January 2020 before my loving and patient husband hands me divorce papers. These mood swings are too much to handle for me and everyone around me."

For Birth Control "This is my second IUD! My first was 3 years ago, and now I’m looking forward to the next 4.5 years with this one. Yes, the procedure is very painful, but it should only take 10 minutes. My boyfriend was in the room with me the second time, and it helped with the anxiety. Since it’s my second IUD, I didn’t have any cramping the second time after insertion! No change in acne on my skin and no weight gain or mood changes. If the pain of the insertion is holding you back, just remember it’s not as bad as childbirth, and then you can forget about birth control for 5 years!!! Over 99% effective!!"

For Birth Control "Would not recommend. I’ve had the worst experience with Kyleena. Constant headaches, awful acne all over face and neck (I’ve never had acne on my neck before), cramps, mood swings, and fatigue. Insertion was the most painful thing I’ve ever felt. I almost fainted after getting it inserted. Kept it in for the 6 months as I was told side effects would go away by then, but it has been 7 months, and I am still dealing with all of the things listed above. I will be getting this removed as soon as I can, as nothing has changed after the 6-month mark."

For Birth Control "I have been on the Kyleena for about 10 months. Insertion was painful but not bad. I bled for about three months after. I used to get few and infrequent pimples, but now my acne has been terrible. I also have experienced mood swings and pretty intense depression. I am thinking about getting it removed as I come up to the 1-year mark because it's honestly not worth feeling terrible. Great that I don't have to worry about becoming pregnant, but I think I'd prefer something else."

For Birth Control "Prior to Kyleena, I had Jaydess for 3 years, and it was amazing! No periods or side effects. I decided after the 3 years I wanted another one, and my doctor recommended Kyleena because 'it's the same amount of hormone but lasts for 5 years instead of 3'..... (This isn't true - the hormone level is higher in Kyleena). Anyway, insertion for Jaydess was easy and not painful, insertion for Kyleena was awful. Apparently, my cervix wouldn't go straight?... Side effects Kyleena: very low sex drive, increased appetite, bloating > weight gain, mood swings, definitely worsened my depression. Just overall not good. Similar side effects to when I took a birth control pill that was hormone heavy. So overall, I think my body just can't handle the hormones. Removed it a few days ago, had it for about 14 months."

For Birth Control "My experience was awful. Never again! My doctor pressured me into getting the IUD, and when I went to her about the side effects from it, she offered no advice, just shrugged her shoulders. The insertion was so bad I almost passed out from the pain. Then, three months in, my hair started falling out in clumps! It is so bad you can see my scalp from all angles (I am 21 years old!). My acne was awful on my face and back. On top of all of this, I had the worst mood swings; crying one second and laughing the next. I have had it out for three weeks now and hope my hair grows back. I do not recommend this to anyone, especially if it is pushed onto you by your doctor. It is not worth the hassle."

For Birth Control "I got the implant after giving birth in Dec 2018. I bleed every day from January 2019 to August 2019. I finally have an 8-day light period every 21 days; however, the mood swings, anxiety, and hair loss make it not worth it. I tried for a year. Scheduled to have it removed."

For Birth Control "With Kyleena, cramps every day for the first 6 months, spotting every day for 6 months... period was painful, longest but with less blood. I’m very emotional and irritable lately. Thinking of removing it. Not for everyone, honestly."

For Birth Control "My GYN recommended Kyleena for my PCOS/heavy periods. Insertion was horrific, as I have a tilted pelvis, it took three GYNs and an ultrasound to finally insert it. I suffered cramps for 3 months/constant spotting, but not heavy bleeding. After 3 months, periods stopped, which was the only benefit of this IUD for me. My side effect symptoms: dizzy spells, memory loss, foggy brain, weight gain, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, mood swings, extreme fatigue. I just felt so awful, like a woman of 80 rather than 40. I went to see a holistic doctor who advised me to get it removed immediately. After 18 months of having it, I had the IUD removed, and I already feel I have much more mental clarity. It's only 5 days, and I feel much more like my old self. Yes, I am having a heavy period, but in hindsight, this is better for me than all the other symptoms I suffered."

For Birth Control "I’ve had Kyleena about 1 year. Insertion wasn’t bad for me, but I tolerate pain well after having kids. The first few months were rough-cramps, nonstop bleeding, bad hormonal acne, mood swings, etc. I combated these symptoms with Midol, my favorite face mask, herbal tea, and heating pads. I am so glad I stuck it out because my body must have acclimated, and I haven’t had any issues for the last 9 months. No more acne, zero spotting or bleeding, and my horrible periods and cramps completely gone. 3 months of torture traded for almost 5 years of not having to worry about anything, worth it to me. I have noticed that this makes me hungrier, so I’ve had to be cognizant of that to avoid weight gain. I drink herbal tea to quell the hunger. Haven’t gained any weight though. After insurance, I only paid $7. Couldn’t be happier with Kyleena."

For Birth Control "Had the Kyleena for 3 years now. The first year was definitely the roughest. The first year on the Kyleena, my body was still trying to adjust to the hormones, mood swings (6 months), weight gain, cramps (thought would never end), occasional outbreak (never get acne). After my body finally found a normal again, no acne, weight loss, no crazy moods. I do get an occasional cramp, the cramps are the worst part. Overall, I would recommend the Kyleena, it does its job... I still find it absolutely terrifying. I’ve never once had my period on it, this just doesn’t seem right to me. I’ve consulted my doctor, who says it’s normal. I do *occasionally* have spotting after sex and INTENSE cramping. My partner not only feels the strings but the Kyleena itself, he describes it as a sharp stabbing pain (not often, but definitely a mood killer). Personally, I’m not rushing to get the Kyleena removed, it’s definitely something I am seriously considering during my next annual checkups."

For Birth Control "I'm 19, and I had my IUD inserted in November 2017. No pregnancies prior. The insertion process was fast, less than a minute. BUT it was the most painful experience of my life. It felt like a very harsh cramp/contraction. For the rest of the day, I was dizzy, nauseous, and cramping severely. For the rest of the MONTH, I had severe cramps and was constantly taking 800 mg ibuprofen just to function normally. I had consistent brown discharge that they said would take up to 6 months to go away. After almost 2 years, it is STILL consistent. The doctors have told me that it's normal, but regardless, this has greatly interfered with my sex life, and my confidence has tanked. My periods last about 10 days and are heavy. Additionally, I've experienced very intense mood swings. One minute, I feel fine, the next minute, I'm panicking or feeling really depressed. However, no weight changes and no acne problems. In the end, I still have unbearable migraines too."

For Birth Control "I have been on Kyleena for about 4 months, and I can say it has had me all over the place. I have 4 kids, which has definitely helped my cramping in a positive way. I decided to get on birth control after giving birth to my last son because I didn’t want to get my tubes tied based on what I have heard from women that have had their tubes tied. I heard that the cramps are really bad and blood flow will increase tremendously. I have tried several pills, and they would all make me sick. So my doctor wanted me to try the IUD, and she recommended the Kyleena. Insertion was okay, just cramping and spotting. Now I am having bad mood swings, I am depressed all the time, my anxiety is through the roof, I cry for no reason, I get really bad headaches, I have experienced dizziness, weight gain of 10 pounds, and spotting. I am trying to give it a year because I have to be on some form of birth control, but this IUD is giving me the blues."

For Birth Control "I've been on Kyleena for over a year now and absolutely hate it! My pros... no babies and lighter periods over time. My cons... gained 30+ lbs, started getting terrible migraines, random cramping and bloating, bad mood swings, makes my boobs EXTREMELY sensitive and sore and has caused some changes in my skin. It's not for everybody. I'm getting mine removed."

For Birth Control "I had Kyleena inserted in July 2019. It was painful. I felt cramps and dizzy after the procedure. I had heavy cramps the first week. And then, I had a period every other week and spotting in between. Bleeding just doesn't go away. It has been 10 weeks. I still have cramps, knee soreness, and lower energy. I have to take iron supplements every day. I don’t have acne. I do experience weight gain, bloating, hair loss, and mood swings. Can I handle one more month? NO. Now I am worried about what may happen when it is removed. Will bleeding stop? Do I go back to normal?"
