For Birth Control "I've had the Kyleena IUD for a little over a year and a half. The first year has been amazing, but shortly after that year mark, I feel it's changed. I've had a lot of cramping and sharp pains. Recently, I've taken 2 pregnancy tests because I am having a lot of pregnancy symptoms. I'm fatigued, nauseous, and have had extreme breast pain."

For Birth Control "So I posted a review about the Kyleena a little while ago, shortly after my insertion. Things were okay, I was a little crampy, and I spotted a bit, but things were okay. Then I got my first period on Kyleena. I ended up in the hospital not once, or twice, but 8 times in the course of about 2 weeks due to severe pain. I was told no cysts had burst, and the IUD was in the right place. No pain medication or management offered, just some unhelpful and disappointing news. Now I've had Kyleena for about 6 weeks, and I'm getting it removed in 3 days. I'm in pain 24/7, bleeding and spotting off and on, my antidepressants aren't as effective lately, and I'm losing sleep mostly due to pain. I can't do anything without triggering cramps, and if I breathe weird when I do sleep, I wake up with a searing pain in my cervix. The only positive thing I can say about Kyleena is that it's great at being a contraceptive because I'm too miserable to want to have sex."

For Birth Control "Overall, I love my Kyleena! It has allowed my partner of 3 years and me to have peace of mind in our relationship, as we know we are not ready to bear the responsibility of a child thus far. I’m 21, and I had my IUD inserted at the age of 18. When I am due to get it removed, I will certainly get another one. Almost monthly, I recommend Kyleena to a new friend because it is that reliable, you even forget you have it most of the time! I will admit, I did experience mild discomfort and cramping the first week of insertion. However, ever since, I have felt completely normal and have even experienced significantly shorter and lighter periods. If you are like me and live a hectic life where you forget to take your pill every now and then, this is a great solution!"

For Birth Control "Before getting Kyleena, I did the biggest mistake by reading online other people’s experience of getting it inserted. Let me just say, I was scared beyond anything you can imagine and didn’t want to do it. But I sucked it up and went through with it. During the procedure, I couldn’t believe how easy it was. It just felt like a giant cramp for less than a minute. Totally bearable, and I had little to no cramps afterwards. Highly recommend this form of birth control for those who found it hard to remember to take the pill and are looking for something long-term :)"

For Birth Control "This is my 1 year, 10 month check-in. The first 90 days were crap because of the bleeding, but eventually, it was fine. I NEVER get a period. I have had cysts, but they come and go and are only briefly present. Compared to period cramps, they’re a breath of fresh air. If you are experiencing cysts and find it hard to cope, I recommend taking a birth control pill as well, because it will stop them. Every now and then, I do experience minor cramps in my uterus, but I think it’s because I’m supposed to be starting my period. I do not recommend reading a review that is less than six months, because yes, it does sound scary, but some people cannot handle it, and that’s okay. You shouldn’t let the rougher months scare you. In the long run, I never have to worry about my period for the next five years. I don’t bloat. After insertion, go home and rest."

For Birth Control "I had the Mirena in 2016 and had it in for about six months before calling it quits due to acne and spotting. I switched to the Paragard copper IUD, which was good at first but then severely increased the heaviness of my period, and my cramps became unbearable. Due to a medication I take, I had to use an IUD (the medication reduced the efficacy of regular birth control). By this time, the Kyleena existed. I have had no issues with the Kyleena. After about 6 months, I started having some light spotting and at times dark brown discharge, but that’s basically it. I am very happy with it."

For Birth Control "I got the Kyleena fitted almost 6 weeks ago. I went under to have it inserted because I had a few other things to be done at the same time. The worst part was recovering from the anesthetic, it made me sick and very tired. I then had cramping for about 5 days afterwards, on and off. Ibuprofen helped it. I bled/spotted for the first week, then it stopped until my next period. I got my period when it was due, it lasted a few days longer than usual (about 8/9 days instead of about 5-6 days), a little bit of cramping, but I didn't need pain relievers for it. The worst side effect I had was acne in the first few weeks following. I now still have a bit, but nothing too worrying. This is an awesome option, I hope it stays like this for me! I was expecting to deal with so much worse for the first few months."

For Birth Control "As far as being a contraceptive with Kyleena, I haven't had any issues. I like feeling very confident that it's working and that I don't have to remember a pill every day. My period has stopped, which is honestly very nice to not have to worry about bleeding. The insertion was horrible, but that's probably because I just had a Paragard removed. My issues have been with the side effects. I believe I'm very susceptible to hormones, and I've had a lot of mood issues since getting the Kyleena-increased anxiety, apathy, sadness, numbness, etc. Not unlike my experience on the pill. I also wake up bloated every morning, even though I've tried cutting out the things in my diet I know might give me that reaction. My boobs are almost constantly sore and unpredictably swollen. I also have light cramping most days. It kind of feels like I'm constantly PMSing."

For Birth Control "I thought I would share my experience since I’ve been on Kyleena for about a year now. I was someone who never got cramps before, so I was very discouraged when I started getting them every month along with my period. The only upside to this BC is the fact I don’t really have a period. It’s super light, and some months I don’t even notice it. Now, a year in, I have really bad acne on my back and chest, I’m always so tired to the point where I don’t even want to get out of bed, and I can sleep 14 hours and still feel tired enough to sleep more. I’ve also been feeling a dark fog or cloud in my mind and feel very irritable and sad all the time. It’s making me super anxious to the point where my appetite is completely gone. I am planning on making an appointment to get it removed because if these side effects are from it, it’s totally not worth it. I just want to get back to the normal hormone levels of my body."

For Birth Control "The insertion of Kyleena was the most painful experience of my life. I felt like someone was sawing my body in half, the pain was so horrible that I passed out. After insertion, I had some mild cramping, but nothing major. In about 4 months, I had gained 25 pounds while eating 1,600 calories a day and working out 6 times a week. The side effects (cramps, nausea, dizziness, headaches) when I got my period were also amplified, so I wouldn't recommend it if you typically have bad period side effects. I did have a regular period, though. It was nice to not have to worry about taking a pill or anything, but overall not worth it."

For Birth Control "20yo, had Kyleena for 8 months and had it removed two weeks ago. The insertion was extremely painful. FYI, I am very pain tolerant. The first three months I was spotting and had painful cramping. Even after eight months I still had cramps. I had a bit of acne all my life, but after 2 months on Kyleena it got so much worse. However, IF YOU HAVE ACNE AS A SIDE EFFECT - DON'T REMOVE IT. It goes away! Your body needs to adjust, 8 months later my skin looks great! Now, I started experiencing HEART PALPITATIONS, NAUSEA, ABDOMINAL PAIN, SICK all the time to the point that I couldn't eat without thinking I would throw up. This made me so miserable along with my NON-EXISTING SEX DRIVE. I was always very active, but now not only did I not want to have sex, I felt like my sensitivity disappeared. That was pretty much the reason why I removed it. I really wanted it to work, and it's a great alternative to pills, but I didn't see the point of preventing pregnancy if I don't have sex."

For Birth Control "I switched to Kyleena from the pill (Kariva). Could not be happier about this decision! I was on the pill for 3 years, my complaints were weight gain (15 pounds), water retention, dermatitis on my face that I tried to treat for all 3 years, and I was also forgetting to take pills occasionally. The insertion was VERY painful, to the extent that I passed out during the procedure. I had to lie down for about 20 minutes before the doctor let me go. The rest of the day, I had very bad cramps, I couldn't work, and pain meds did not do anything. But the next morning, I was able to return to work. I had moderate cramps the next two days, and on the 3rd day after insertion, I was back at the gym. After 3 to 4 days, the cramps went away. I had a light period and have been spotting for about a week. More importantly, my dermatitis went away 3 weeks after insertion! Also, I have lost about 5 pounds in 3 weeks. Now, I don't feel the IUD at all, no pain, and I do not experience any side effects so far."

For Birth Control "I was on Kyleena for about two and a half years and have finally taken it out. The first year was great, with no period and no side effects. Then, about at the one-year mark, my symptoms started and worsened over time. I broke out in deep, painful cystic acne all over my face and body that could not be resolved. I also had severe cramping and had a few ovarian cysts form that I had no prior history of. Finally, in the last year, I spotted heavily every day. For whatever reason, this is not the right form of contraception for me. When it worked, I was a huge fan, but I will not be getting another one."

For Birth Control "This is my second IUD! My first was 3 years ago, and now I’m looking forward to the next 4.5 years with this one. Yes, the procedure is very painful, but it should only take 10 minutes. My boyfriend was in the room with me the second time, and it helped with the anxiety. Since it’s my second IUD, I didn’t have any cramping the second time after insertion! No change in acne on my skin and no weight gain or mood changes. If the pain of the insertion is holding you back, just remember it’s not as bad as childbirth, and then you can forget about birth control for 5 years!!! Over 99% effective!!"

For Birth Control "Would not recommend. I’ve had the worst experience with Kyleena. Constant headaches, awful acne all over face and neck (I’ve never had acne on my neck before), cramps, mood swings, and fatigue. Insertion was the most painful thing I’ve ever felt. I almost fainted after getting it inserted. Kept it in for the 6 months as I was told side effects would go away by then, but it has been 7 months, and I am still dealing with all of the things listed above. I will be getting this removed as soon as I can, as nothing has changed after the 6-month mark."

For Birth Control "Got my Kyleena on July 20 (4 days ago). Doc gave me misoprostol to insert the night before insertion, and I took 800 mg of ibuprofen an hour before. Insertion was mostly just uncomfortable, one bad cramp when she inserted the IUD, 3 or 4/10 on the pain scale, but only lasted for about 5 seconds. Went back to work right after, and had cramping the rest of the day and took some more ibuprofen before bed. I spotted for a day or two, but I was on my period when it was inserted, so if anything, it seems to have stopped my period. Had sex yesterday, 3 days post-insertion, and it was totally normal. Partner said he could feel the string a few times at some angles. So far, so good!"

For Birth Control "Ok, I'm giving a 10 for the experience and not the effectiveness because I just had it put in this morning, first-time user. You MUST relax! Yes, you will feel a cramp and a pinch, but it's not too much worse than getting scraped when you get a Pap smear or a body piercing. It's literally over in seconds. Keep repeating 'it's only temporary' like I did, breathe, do not tense or clench anything, you will be fine! Once the lidocaine is applied, you don't feel the IUD going in. Take a Dramamine if you don't have Xanax to help ease your nerves and Motrin. If you can, time your appointment on the first or second day of your period. You got this! It'll be over before you know it."

For Birth Control "Recently had Kyleena inserted (06/14/19). So far, I'm loving it! The insertion hurt-you definitely want to hold onto something to squeeze, but I didn't find it to be too terrible. The whole thing took about fifteen minutes. My doctor said it went really well. I would recommend taking 800 mg of Tylenol before the surgery. Yes, it is painful getting it done, but you have to think: it's better to be getting IUD strings cut rather than a different kind of string cut (if you know what I mean). Felt great afterwards-drove myself home. Cramps started about 3 hours after the procedure. Pretty heavy cramps, but if you already get heavy cramps with your period, this should be nothing new. Cramps stopped after a day (maybe a day and a half), but after that, I've felt great. Had sex the day of, and it felt fine-my partner noticed the strings, but he really didn't mind it. Everyone's body is different and reacts different ways, so it's important to not stress about negative reviews!"

For Birth Control "The 1st week following Kyleena, I had bad cramps and had to take a hot water bottle to work/take painkillers. Then the pain subsided, and I stopped bleeding for a week. However, at the end of the 2nd week of Kyleena, I have started bleeding with SEVERE cramps; it felt like my cervix was spasming, which was coming and going in waves. I am used to severe period pains, but this was a different type of pain; like a pulling/nerve/spasm pain, which was unbearable. The bleeding lasted almost 2 weeks, and yesterday I had to go to A&E to have this removed. I would say, however, that I have always suffered from very bad period pains, and having spoken to the doctor when getting this removed, she mentioned that if you are going on the coil to reduce pain, then Kyleena is not the one for you. I have also heard great case studies from friends that it has worked well with, so I really think it is completely based on your body as an individual. It simply didn't work for me."

For Birth Control "I had Kyleena inserted just over a month ago. The insertion itself was very painful but brief, with a little lightheadedness immediately after. I spent the next two days in bed with awful cramps, but by day three was feeling back to normal. I've had zero bleeding or spotting since the insertion. I did experience some mild cramping throughout the month, but nothing a little Midol didn't fix. I recently had my follow-up visit with my doctor, and the IUD is still perfectly in place. In addition to stress-free birth control, I have noticed my mood and sex drive have improved drastically compared to the pill. So far, I'm loving Kyleena!"

For Birth Control "I went to my OB-GYN after experiencing heavy periods for years. Tried pills, and they never worked for me. So my doctor told me to try Kyleena. After weighing the options, I decided I would try it. Insertion was very painful, and I’m usually tolerant to pain. After insertion, I was told to expect on-and-off spotting for 3 months and then it would regulate. After I left, my period didn’t end until I got it removed. The entire time I had it, I had extreme cramping, almost like contractions. I also had extreme nausea, dizziness, bloating to where I looked pregnant, weight gain, and I was absolutely miserable. I went back for the string check and made them take it out. My doctor told me she has never heard of anyone having the reaction I had. I was so disappointed and do not recommend it based on my experience."

For Birth Control "I have Kyleena for a year now. I had it inserted a month after my second child was born and had no problem with the procedure. I chose Kyleena over Mirena because it has fewer hormones and you’re supposed to still have your period, what I thought to be closer to a natural thing. I bled and had light pelvic discomfort for three months. After that, I had irregular bleeding and spotting every single month. In one particular month, I bled so much I had to change pads every two hours, and the following two months after that, I had cramps and spots, but no real blood, which made me resort to a pregnancy test. I have also experienced very high levels of anxiety and some weight gain, discharges with a strong smell, cramping, and some acne. I really want it removed but need to decide the next form of birth control first."

For Birth Control "I got Kyleena inserted about 3 months ago, and honestly, it was the best decision I made for myself. I have kind of abnormal anatomy (large and antiverted uterus), and it did take my OB/GYN a couple extra minutes than usual to get it in the perfect place. I had little pain during insertion, which was like two intense cramps lasting 30 seconds, and I was fine within 5 minutes and walked home from the clinic with no pain or bleeding. My period came on schedule, but I did experience more intense cramping and heavy bleeding for two weeks, followed by spotting for 3 weeks, and then it stopped completely. I haven’t had a period since, and I am not pregnant. No cramping, no hormonal acne, no effect on my mood or weight, no effect on libido (just as high as it was before insertion), and no problems. It works great for me so far, better than the pill personally."
