For Pain "I suffered from severe back pain and nerve damage from 2003 onwards . Chronic pain combined with trying to keep working , traveling the world and family life, led to depression . After visiting my GP he sent me to Psychiatrist who started me on Imipramine. 100mg at night . It certainly improved things for me . Life got better . Combined with Cortisone injections into the spine , I could now tolerate the pain and life improved . I am now much better and quite active and pain is less frequent. I’m on a mission to reduce the dosage and I’m now down to 35mg at night. I blame my high blood pressure and skin irritations on shins on the imipramine, but that’s to be proven yet. One thing, don’t try come off it yourself or play with your dosage yourself. I foolishly did that for a few weeks a few years ago and one day I thought I was having a stroke or vertigo. I was in total bits with electric shock like systems and a fear of going to pass out . Very scary ."

For Pain "I was suffering from 'atypical facial pain' for two years which was absolutely excruciating (every other day). I held off taking a medicine such as this because I was concerned about the impact it may have on my (male) fertility. In the end I succumbed because the pain was just too much. 80 mg - 40 in the morning and 40 in the evening - have taken away the pain. I switched between this and amitriptyline for a while because this one does have side effects. I have an endlessly dry mouth so I have to drink a lot of water. Urinating can also be a challenge but the sheer amount of water I drink offsets this problem somewhat. Amitriptyline worked equally well but it was more sedating. Imipramine makes it more difficult to sleep at night but it doesn't send me to sleep during the day. Amitryptiline is worse for weight gain, in my experience, and both are equally bad for libido. Neither has been good for my anxiety. On the whole, I am extremely grateful to imipramine though."

For Depression "I was on imipramine for a little over a year, after trying every other antidepressant known to man. At first I noticed a major change. It was the best I had felt in years. I was back to doing things that I used to do and felt great. It also helped me to sleep at night. The effects of the med started to decrease so we increased the dose until I was eventually on 100mg a day. That's when the side effect started. I went in for a routine doctor visit and my resting heart rate was 130. Of course panic set in and I had a bunch of tests ran on my heart, everything was normal. The only thing different was the increase in imiprimine. It caused me tachycardia. So now I am in the process of weaning off of it. Onto something else."

For Panic Disorder "-First 4 days of imipramine @50mg I would have odd outer body type experiences just before falling asleep, created more panic. -2nd and 3rd week I could feel my panic fighting against the medication, I thought it maybe starting to work. by the second month I was going to the bathroom only once a week, yes the constipation is real. I had a full body cold shiver which took up 90% of my day, restless leg while trying to sleep, problems urinating and my anxiety was back. You would think only on a month and a half I can stop, NO, had to taper off, next, Everyone will react different."

For Night Terrors "This medicine works great for night terrors. I have suffered from night terrors for over 25 years. I took venlafaxine before and that seemed to work as well. I didn't like the side effects with that medicine. Imipramine, the only side effect I get is sweating sometimes during the daytime mostly. I am taking 10mg daily at night and this has eliminated my night terrors and I was experiencing them about 3-4 times a week. I would recommend this medicine."

For Enuresis "I started imipramine a few months ago for both depression and enuresis(two birds with one stone!) and have noticed positive changes in both areas. It completely eliminated the enuresis, and my mental health is better than it has been in years. I have not noticed any negative side effects!"

For Depression "Only been on it about 6 weeks and only up to 30mg. Moods are a little better so far but insomnia hello. I'm lucky to get 3 or 4 hours a nite I don't get how all of you sleep. I used to fall right asleep with my topamax at nite. Now he has me taking my gabapentin, topamax and imipramine at bedtime optional Ativan too but then I wake up groggy defeating the purpose of great mood in the am. Hum maybe my meds don't play nice together at nite lol. I do get the dry mouth I really hate that but it has improved my morning moods which is what we were going for. I do have anxiety and it doesn't help with a quick onset. I am hopeful for this med as I have tried just about everything out there!"

For ADHD "imipramine in combination with a small dose of Ritalin (methylphenidate) works very well for me. Remember Imipramine and its metabolites has a strong effect on norepinephrine, working similarly than Atomoxetine which is FDA approved for ADHD."

For Night Terrors "I take Imipramine for Cataplexy and Night Terrors. For cataplexy, Imipramine is by far the most effective treatment my doctor has tried, as it has eliminated about 70% of the attacks. As for night terrors, they are completely gone. However, if I take a nap during the day, I will have nightmares about half the time. I take 150mg just before bed. The first couple months I was faced with some side effects. If I didn't go to bed right after taking the medicine, I would be in a dazed state and could fall asleep standing up - that is gone. Erectile dysfunction and studdering were also present in the first 90 days or so. Both have disappeared. This is a drug you must give a little time before you see the benefits."

For ADHD "I have insomnia and fibromyalgia. The pain from the fibromyalgia is worsened when I can't sleep well. My doctor prescribed this medication to me mainly for better sleep. He said that this medication was one of the first non-stimulant medication for ADHD (which I've been diagnosed with) and so it may help with my ADHD symptoms as well. When I first started taking this I felt nauseated all the time, for about 2 1/2 weeks. Once that passed I felt like I really was sleeping better. About 2 months in I started having vivid hallucinations and 6 months I started having kidney pain and urinary tract problems. I'm now trying to ween myself off of it because sadly the side effects are outweighing the better sleep."

For Depression "I was prescribed imipramine for depression. It worked very well for years! BUT... it made me a diabetic with peripheral neuropathy. When I was originally given the medication I was told it would increase my appetite. It did - a LOT! It also raised my glucose levels to astronomical levels (400-500). My A1c was between 10 and 11. Over time, it damaged my nerves. I didn't realize this until my feet began to burn. After slowly decreasing imipramine by 5 mg per week until completely coming off it, my feet were unbearable. The pain was constant. I couldn't walk, or have anything on my feet. I would sleep with my blankets folded up and my feet hanging off the bed. I would soak my feet in ice water to alleviate the burning and pain."

For Depression "I came off lexapro thinking that imipramine would better since it affects 3 neuro transmitters.. dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine. But I had another thing coming. It is the worst. More side effects. The effect is low and slugglish. Always makes you sleepy. It destroyed my appetite. I can't even eat for days. My energy levels depleted significantly. I am just gonna give an extra one week if it doesn't work I'll request for a new medication cos 8 days into this drug I feel like I have lost it all"

For ADHD "On my last antidepressant, I was sleeping for 12 hours and still felt tired (hypersomnia). Now I'm on Imipramine, I'm sleeping for 6-8 hours and am waking up early. My insomnia has vanished and I feel well rested on this drug. I haven't felt so well slept in many years. I felt low the first couple of days, but that soon evened out. Mood wise, it's definitely improved. No longer uneasy/queasy. I think I'm going to stay on this med. My impulsivity has reduced and I feel much more level headed. I drink way more water on Imipramine. Appetite wise, I'm eating slightly less than I used to, which is great because I'm overweight."

For Depression "I started on imipramine two 25mg per day and it has been 4 days on it. Immediately I noticed a considerable decline in my sex drive. This was my experience, I've used bupropion which was great! It's worth discussing with your psychiatrist. I have ADHD and comorbid depression, probably anxiety too. All the best with your treatment."

For Panic Disorder "Within the first day I noticed a large improvement in my panic disorder as well as my ADHD which I am already being treated for with zenzedi but that has been getting worse as my panic disorder began resurfacing from years past due to personal circumstances. Very effective medicine for panic disorder. Also for PTSD I found relief."

For Depression "This drug took an awfully long time to work. I hadn't been able to notice its subtle effects until about 2 months into treatment. It does lift your mood up by a tiny fraction, is great for general anxiety and it sparks up your motivation a bit. I had been on this medication alone for no avail, but when I paired it with an SSRI (Zoloft), it made a huge difference. I recommend this combination for treatment of depression."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I was placed on Imipramine, 10 mg. Taken at bedtime. 3rd week after starting it, I began having nerve-like pain & burning down both legs into my feet, lower back pain & muscle spasms in back and legs. I couldn't sleep & was irritable. 3 days later I started noticing balance & coordination difficulties. It was so bad I was finding it hard to stand & walk, often falling into walls. I was dizzy & shaky. My cognitive abilities were diminished. Days later, close to the end of week 3 of being on the Imipramine, I began to have nerve-like pain in my arms & hands, my lips & tongue were numb & lips peeling excessively. I was sure it was the imipramine by then, and stopped taking it at week 4. 30 hours after my last dose, I noticed a slight improvement of side effects. 4-5 days later all the side effects were greatly reduced & by 7 days after the last dose of the Imipramine, all symptoms had stopped & I began to feel like my normal. I never noticed that it helped the IBS."

For Panic Disorder "I have had awesome results with this drug, after going through a rough year being taken on & off of medications that almost ruined my life. My Dr has been sending me to check my blood levels & they seem to keep going up. I was taking 200 mg at night & he dropped it to 175mg. It took 3 weeks to start feeling withdrawal & it was awful. He then increased it back to 200 mg & my imipramine levels are higher then they have ever been. I am scared he is going to reduce or try to put me on another drug. Anyone ever had problems with blood levels of imipramine?"

For Depression "Imipramine- started it way back in 1982 for clinical depression and took it for 5-6 years. It GAVE me sleep paralysis and hypnagogic hallucinations, waking and lucid dreams too. I remember telling my psyche about the Seep paralysis (SP) , he didn't know why it was happening. Of course back then, nobody knew what to call it and I couldn't find out anything on my own until early 2000's on the internet. Go figure. Occasionally I'll still have an episode of SP, under stress. Medicine was great for my depression and ADHD, mucked up my dream life tho. Not worth the risk if I had to do it all over again. I did enjoy the waking dreams tho and the OBE's"

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I have chronic IBS-diarrhea which started in my twenties. I get severe severe nausea when I get an attack. It is so bad I think I have to go to the hospital. The nausea is the worse part of my IBSd. My whole body feels sick. After years of horrible suffering I was put I on imipramine and it gave me back my life. I was 30 when I started it. I am now 61. I had to modify my lifestyle in conjunction with the imipramine, I watch what I eat AVOID ONIONS at all costs and I don’t drink. My attacks were daily and now they are sporadic. Rare. But when I try to go off the imipramine they come back so I am still on it. But it is manageable now. When it comes I take a Tylenol right away and use my hot water bottle. If it is a bad one I will chew a bit of Pepto Bismol. Imipramine does have side effects but the benefits outweigh them."

For Depression "25mg, once a day at night. For the first 7-8 weeks of taking this medication there was no positive effect on my mood, around week 3/4 my mood was noticeably worse. During the 7-8 week period I constantly felt disconnected and lacked any sort of motivation or energy to engage in any activity that involved thinking, especially social situations. I would constantly have a dry mouth and dry eyes and in addition I also had trouble urinating in the morning and when standing up I would feel light headed and dizzy for a few seconds, this was worse if I had been lying down. However, now my mood is much more stable and the side effects are gone but if I miss more than 2-3 doses then I feel incredibly low for about a week but then pick up again."

Tofranil (imipramine) for Depression "Waste of 75 bucks. My mood only increased slightly, and in exchange I got terrible bouts of dizziness and vertigo. Most of the time I felt like I'd been shot with a tranquilizer dart. Horrible experience. After only a week or so, I started to get nausea as well, so I had to stop. I regret spending money on this med."
