For Depression "This was the first and best drug used to treat my severe depression. Before I took it, I did not have enough energy to look for work, nor could I hold up the newspaper to read it. I had been nauseous and eating little, and I could not sleep beyond 3 hours. I had been very achy and exhausted, and in a state of fatigue for greater than 6 months. After a month of imipramine, I regained my appetite, was no longer achy, and I could sleep through the night. I got better, returned to work, and was able to slowly wean off it after 18 months."

For Pain "I was prescribed this medication for chronic widespread muscle pain (fibromyalgia) and neuropathic pain, and allodynia all over, plus vulvodynia. It does take the edge off, and the pain is not as intense as it used to be, but still continuing sadly. It did take away my sleep paralysis episodes and sleep hallucinations, amazing for sleep too. It's a great drug, it's the only one I can tolerate. I tried amitriptyline and all the SSRIs, but the side effects have been horrendous and had a devastating effect on my functioning. The only effects imipramine has on me are some dizziness and drowsiness during the day, fast heart rate, and mild loss of libido, but other than these, I feel it's very useful with pain and sleep. The first few days expect nausea and somnolence."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I have chronic IBS-diarrhea, which started in my twenties. I get severe, severe nausea when I get an attack. It is so bad I think I have to go to the hospital. The nausea is the worst part of my IBSd. My whole body feels sick. After years of horrible suffering, I was put on imipramine, and it gave me back my life. I was 30 when I started it. I am now 61. I had to modify my lifestyle in conjunction with the imipramine, I watch what I eat, avoid onions at all costs, and I don’t drink. My attacks were daily, and now they are sporadic. Rare. But when I try to go off the imipramine, they come back, so I am still on it. But it is manageable now. When it comes, I take a Tylenol right away and use my hot water bottle. If it is a bad one, I will chew a bit of Pepto Bismol. Imipramine does have side effects, but the benefits outweigh them."

For ADHD "I have insomnia and fibromyalgia. The pain from the fibromyalgia is worsened when I can't sleep well. My doctor prescribed this medication to me mainly for better sleep. He said that this medication was one of the first non-stimulant medications for ADHD (which I've been diagnosed with), and so it may help with my ADHD symptoms as well. When I first started taking this, I felt nauseated all the time for about 2 1/2 weeks. Once that passed, I felt like I really was sleeping better. About 2 months in, I started having vivid hallucinations, and 6 months in, I started having kidney pain and urinary tract problems. I'm now trying to wean myself off of it because sadly the side effects are outweighing the better sleep."

For ADHD "On my last antidepressant, I was sleeping for 12 hours and still felt tired (hypersomnia). Now I'm on imipramine, I'm sleeping for 6-8 hours and am waking up early. My insomnia has vanished, and I feel well-rested on this drug. I haven't felt so well slept in many years. I felt low the first couple of days, but that soon evened out. Mood-wise, it's definitely improved. No longer uneasy/queasy. I think I'm going to stay on this med. My impulsivity has reduced, and I feel much more level-headed. I drink way more water on imipramine. Appetite-wise, I'm eating slightly less than I used to, which is great because I'm overweight."

Imipramine for Depression "Waste of 75 bucks. My mood only increased slightly, and in exchange I got terrible bouts of dizziness and vertigo. Most of the time I felt like I'd been shot with a tranquilizer dart. Horrible experience. After only a week or so, I started to get nausea as well, so I had to stop. I regret spending money on this med."

For Panic Disorder "Very bad side effects on day 6, and I have to stop taking. Nausea all the time. Headaches. Dizziness. Nervousness. Tired constantly. On a very low dose."
