"I was 140 lbs at the time of insertion. I've had this BC for a little over a year now. I am now 115 lbs, can't gain weight, no appetite due to the depression, and very low on energy due to the lack of nutrition. Migraines just started, they last for about 3 days. No sex drive, minor acne, NO PERIOD, moody, back pain, sore throat, flu-like symptoms that go away within a day. Some episodes of vaginal itching."

"I have been on this medication now for 4 months, got on it before my first period after childbirth. About 2-3 weeks later, I got a period, lasted a little longer than normal but light. Haven't had a period since. Hopefully it stays this way. The only thing I have trouble with is all the weight gain, it's just stacking on me."

"I've had the Implanon for 6 months now - light periods and occasional cramps - but aside from that, no bad side effects! I've even lost weight (only half a stone), so I guess it affects everyone differently! The first month was quite horrible as I was bleeding all the time! But afterwards, it was all fine."

"Before getting this, I religiously read the reviews, and I was terrified. Weight gain, no sex drive, depression were common things I was reading in every thread. However, I have had an amazing experience, and I just want to remind everyone that everyone has different reactions, and keep in mind that it's normal for people to post negative reviews, but people rarely post positive reviews. I went on this from the NuvaRing. I haven't gotten my period since I've had it, which is great! No weight gain (but I do work out and eat decently), and I haven't had feelings of depression. My sex drive isn't as high as it was without any birth control, but it's definitely higher than it was on the NuvaRing."

"I had Implanon inserted in May 2013 and still have it in now (January 2015). There have been positives and negatives. Positives: I have not had a period since the insertion, I did not get pregnant, my arm was bruised for a day. Negatives: I have no sex drive, have gained 35 pounds (rapidly) since the implant, I have slight mood swings and have been short-tempered since starting this birth control method. I have been on a strict diet for the last six months to lose weight and cannot shed a pound. My Implanon days are numbered."

"I had mine put in July 2009. I love it because my sex drive is way up. I don't have to worry about taking a pill, and I don't have to use condoms with my husband. I haven't had any side effects. It actually helped me lose my baby weight. I would recommend this to anyone. It's a really great product."

"Implanon does its job, but I do have really crazy mood swings, and I have gained 10 pounds since I've had it in (even though I work out regularly). I have periods every other month (light flow but the worst cramps). Don't know if I can deal with it anymore. Not really used to the changes."

"Please consider Implanon as a birth control option and be aware of side effects. My first experience with Implanon was great. Didn't have my period for most of it, and I was very happy for that bonus. Towards the end of the first rod, things began to change and got far worse with my second round. I started to become a wreck, I would become upset by everything and was completely exhausted to the point where my life was very impacted. I was constantly at the doctors doing blood tests trying to work out what was wrong with me and really wanted the test results to come back with answers because I knew something was really wrong because my life didn't feel like it did before. I never clicked it was the Implanon, and the doctors not once mentioned that it could be the reason. I had the Implanon removed recently, and I cannot believe how good I feel. In those hard times, I really felt my life was worthless. These side effects creep up on you and can make it not so obvious that it is the cause."

"I had the Implanon put in on July 19th, 2015. I have had the Implanon in for 5 months and 23 days. I had it taken out two days ago after noticing my periods getting heavier. I have had a period every day I have been on the Implanon and bad mood swings. No weight gain, though, which is good. I would not recommend this to anyone."

"Pretty good birth control option for me! Have had it for 5 years now. I usually get my period once every 3-6 months. Only con is when I get my period, I'm having PMS symptoms 3 weeks before I get my period (painful cramps, tender breasts, throbbing migraines, etc)."

"I would never recommend Implanon (the rod) as a form of contraception to anybody. I have had mine in almost for the full 3-year term. As I was on the pill and kept forgetting to take it, I needed some form of contraception, so I came across Implanon. It all sounded well and good, but the whole time it's given me nothing but grief. I have put on 10 kg, sometimes I don't have my period for 2 months, then other times it will be every week on and off heavy bleeding. I am so lethargic and never feel like going anywhere or doing anything, and I've also been diagnosed with anxiety since being on this. The headaches are constant! I CANNOT WAIT TO GET IT OUT! WOULDN'T RECOMMEND TO ANYBODY! Especially young girls!"

"When I first started using contraception, I was put on the pill, and it really messed with my emotions, plus, I'd end up forgetting to take it every day, so I tried Implanon. During the first year of insertion, it did cause my periods to become heavier, longer, and less predictable. However, after a few months, they lessened to the point where I no longer had a period anymore (huge bonus). Anyway, I'd highly recommend Implanon as a form of contraception and will continue to use it myself. Hope this helps!"

"For some people, it works. Not for me, though... I've had a period ever since I got it before Christmas. It makes me extremely moody and emotional. It's now maybe working better? But not sure. I regret it, and I'm too scared to get it taken out. Even though it didn't hurt that bad to put in."

"I got my Implanon inserted in September 2009, 2 1/2 months after my son was born. Before insertion, I had a sex drive, good skin, lost all my weight from my pregnancy, and wasn't angry or impatient all the time. I didn't have a period until December that lasted 5 days. My next cycle was at the end of January and was heavy until March. I have had a period either every month for 14 days straight or every other week with 7 days of bleeding. I like the idea of no pill, but this has got to stop. My OB has put me on the pill to stop my bleeding, but I have taken the pill every day for the last 5 months. And I still have it every other week. I have bad acne, moodiness, and gained 30 pounds. My marriage is probably suffering because I have no sex drive. It's time to get it out!"

"I had my first Implanon put in in 2009 and am now on my second one and love it! I haven't had my period since two months after the first one was put in. Yes, I've gained some weight, but the cramps and mood swings are gone! I love this method of birth control! I don't have to use condoms with my partners, and I don't have to worry about getting pregnant. My only small complaint is my arm does get sore around the implant and throbs every once in a while."

"I was switched to this about 6 months ago by my Gyno because Ortho has estrogen, and that wasn't good with my migraines and the side effects I have with those. My period was really horrible the first few months. It would last for weeks on end. I have not had a period in 2 months, which is great! The downside is I am always tired, I have mood swings, and acne."

"I have had Implanon for three years now and have an appointment next week to have it removed. I'm looking forward to it! Reasons being: since Implanon, my sex drive is gone.. and I'm only 24 years old! This has caused BAD problems with my marriage and has nearly caused divorce on more than one occasion. The past 3 years have been horrible with this side effect. After doing research, I have found that this may be permanent even after Implanon is removed. Another side effect that I have is severe depression. I have struggled with depression before Implanon, but it has made it worse. I have also experienced fatigue. The only good thing about Implanon is the fact it has kept me from getting pregnant."

"I really like it, almost had it for 3 years. Didn't gain any weight. I lost my period the first 7 months, then got it back. The period can be long or can be short, sometimes heavy but usually light. I do get emotional and have mood swings. I think it works great, and plus you don't forget, and it works for 3 years."

"I had read a lot of bad reviews about Implanon, so I got the patch and had a bad experience with it: weight gain + feeling bloated ALL the time. Knowing I couldn't trust myself with a daily pill, I tried the implant. After 6 months, I've had a great experience so far with some minor setbacks. No weight gain, no acne, best of all no bloating! (I don't really work out much but eat generally healthy.) However, my periods have been sort of crazy - I get a regular (pretty light) period every month, but sometimes it lasts longer than I anticipate. When I was off BC, my periods were like 4 days tops. This month my period lasted for 4 weeks!! It's an annoyance, but not a terrible issue. Every BODY is different - the only way to know is if you try it."

"I’ve been on this birth control for almost 3 years now (August 23rd will be 3 years), and I mean yeah, it does good on preventing you from getting pregnant, but the periods are just not okay. On Implanon, I would normally get my period about every 2/3 months, and when I did, it was HEAVY and lasted for about 2 weeks with seriously painful cramps. It made me gain a lot of weight in the beginning, but these past couple of months, I’ve been losing weight like crazy. I used to always hang out with my friends, but lately, I’ve pushed a lot of people away and have gotten really bad anxiety and don’t feel like myself. I’ve also been having body twitches the past 4 months, and I’ve had 4 periods since the 11th of June, and I don’t feel okay. There’s so much more to say, but the maximum is 1000 words, but please take my word and do not get this. It’s so bad for your body and mental health, I really wish I knew this before getting it."

"I wasn't ready to have a baby when I just got married in 2008, though, to 2012. So Implanon was the latest contraceptive then. I had the rod inserted in my arm with minimum pain. But years later, the removal was a bit more painful. The side effects of Implanon. I started off okay for a few months, then I started having irregular menstruation and breast tenderness. I started spotting drops of blood every 2 weeks. I had lower libido and was more aggressive. My temperament grew increasingly erratic. I also felt like my hair was falling out. After a year, I think I completely transformed into a raging monster. I was increasingly unstable in the head. I had another violent outburst, and my whole personality shifted and it ended my marriage too. I had the Implanon removed. I didn't recover immediately, but after about 4 to 6 months for the hormones to wean. It has been 6 years since then and that whole period of my life was definitely out of character."

"Where do I start? I'm 22 years old, and I had Implanon inserted in the middle of July 2009. Insertion was painless, but side effects are unbearable. I've gained 50 lbs and counting, constant bleeding ever since I got it; severe anxiety/depression and mood swings. No sex drive, increased vaginal discharge, acne... did I mention I've been bleeding for 6 months! I want to switch to Yaz, but I smoke."

"I have had the Implanon for about 12 weeks and am going to have it removed next week. Although a good form of contraception for preventing babies, I have found it made me moody, anxious, and at times downright depressed. Also sometimes aggressive, and my libido dwindled to nothing (rather defeats the object). My poor young boys think an alien has inhabited their mummy's body, and they are the final reason I am having it taken out. I have been irritable beyond belief with them and never was before this went in. My husband wants his wife back, my kids want their mum back, and I want my life back. It works for some people. It has not worked for me."

"My boyfriend and I used to have sex all the time... Because I didn't want to get knocked up, I got on this thing, and well, it worked, mainly because you lose your sex drive, gain absolutely tons of weight, and can't stand the little things you used to ignore. Sooo yes, you won't get pregnant unless you're single out on the town, and no one has to deal with that."

"I have had the rod for 12 years in total. 4 lots of 3 years. Finally getting the rod out now to give my body a rest and get ready for babies in the future. Previous to the rod, I had extremely bad period pain and heavy bleeding, to the point I would have to call in sick and lay in bed all day. With the rod, my periods sort of stopped or only came every 4 months. When it did come, it was extremely light, more like spotting. Never had any issues but always knew when it was time to get it changed because I would start to get bad periods and lots of bleeding. Once I got a new bar in, that would all stop. Would recommend, but obviously it does not suit all people."
