"My husband was prescribed 4 mg Doxazosin to hopefully reduce the number of trips to the bathroom as well as lowering the blood pressure. It was prescribed in place of the HCTZ that was lowering the Creatinine levels and it was to be taken along with the Metoprolol he had been taking for 2 years. The side effects listed for Doxazosin in the info given by the pharmacy were very generic and no specific warnings were listed on the bottle other than possible impairments while driving. No specific instructions were given by the doctor or pharmacist and it said "take one a day" on the bottle. He was a healthy 150 lbs. 78 year old swimming a mile three days a week at the local gym. On the day he started taking Doxazosin he had a fainting or nearly fainting spell within 45 minutes that resulted in a deadly ground level fall fracturing the skull and closed brain injuries. He died hours later. Please be careful and avoid taking this medication."

"I am on 2mg of Doxasozin and it seems to reduce my blood pressure. Side effects are horrendous though. Exhaustion like you have the flu or are approaching end of life. When I first started on them I couldn't even walk from my car to my office without feeling like I was about to collapse and breathless. I know for sure it is them as I have come off them myself several times and I am back to normal."

"An awful drug. Caused me severe anxiety and it makes you heart go like the clappers even on a low dose! Other side effects I experienced were shortness of breath and a fluttering heart beat. It's time this dangerous drug was taken off the market."

"I'm on 4mg of Doxazosin since February and have gained 15 lbs weight and tinnitus! So fed up! I'm also on a diuretic Indapamide 1.5 too. I have hypothyroidism too on 50 mg of eltroxin. Showing signs of systemic lupus in antibodies, but waiting on appointment. I think my BP meds are causing weight gain and tinnitus. Has it affected anybody here? Desperate"

Cardura (doxazosin) "Took 1 8mg Cardura daily. Experienced dizziness and nausea for the first 3 days but later adjusted to the medication and maintained pressure around 120/80. On doctor's advise, Cardura discontinued and replaced with alternative medication due to excessively fast pulse/heart rate up to 100/s after 6 months on Cardura"

"I have been on doxazosin for over a year now, along with a few other prescriptions for my high blood pressure and kidneys. The doctor prescribed 4 mg twice a day. It works pretty well at reducing my blood pressure, but has some terrible side effects. I completely lost my drive for sex, which is usually very strong. In addition, it caused “retrograde ejaculation” (no semen on orgasm). I found that unacceptable, so I reduced my dosage to 4mg on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. My blood pressure has gotten worse, but my libido and ejaculation has returned to normal. Got to go back and see doctor, try to find a new medication, but I am running out of options. I hate this drug."

"Started with 4mg doxazosin + 2mg bendroflumethiazide. BP not under control. Over the years the dosage of doxazosin was increased to 2x4mg in the morning taken with 1 Bendro and then another 4mg of Dox at night. I don't feel dizzy but have shortness of breath, sometimes think I forget to breathe (?), feeling of anxiousness in my chest, which eases off a little with deep breaths. Out and about during the day I feel fine. The shortness of breathe/ anxiety is noticeable when resting."

"Had hypertensive crisis one year ago. Hospital added amlodipine to my existing BP meds of candesartan, propranolol and swapped the frusemide for bendroflumethiazide. Amlodipine caused my ankles to swell so I asked for alternative. Prescribed 1mg Doxazosin and have had 10 months of a living nightmare. I experienced feeling very hot, sweating, red face, palpitations, swollen fingers, severe headaches, depression and anxiety. My BP dropped like a stone after taking the meds and I was giddy and faint and then BP rose steadily throughout the day so by 4.00 p.m BP was very high and remained high until took med the following morning. Repeatedly made calls to GP but my symptoms dismissed during telephone appointments with numerous doctors at the surgery and was told I was over anxious and to persevere. I finally arranged and spoke to a doctor in a private consultation and after taking my history was told to stop the doxazosin immediately. 48 hours later BP normal, no flushing, sweating or swelling."

"Started on 1mg dose after being prescribed 2mg. I have trust issues with any med, blood pressure ok . Been taking it a month. Eyes are red and swollen, sex drive is about half what it was, having trouble getting erection, I sleep better but not worth the other side effects. Weight gain also. No more for me! I'm not happy."

"I had been taking tamsulosin for BPH and when my blood pressure got too high, I switched to doxazosin. I have reacted very very badly to a beta blocker in the past but have had no trouble with alpha blockers. The dose is up to 4 mg. twice a day and I have no obvious side effects. My BP is still a little higher than my doctor likes but lower than it was, and the BPH remains under control."

"Switched from a non-selective beta blocker for treatment of Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder due to infant adoption. Doctor started me at 4mg, but I blacked out upon getting out of bed three days later. I had the prescription lowered to 1mg, but am taking half now and it is highly effective with virtually no side effects for me. No more PTSD-related nightmares due to the longer half-life, and very little hypervigilance. I am also able to be more physically active now than with a beta blocker, which is great."

"It works better than any other blood pressure medicine I have taken and I have taken many including 3 more that I take beside the doxazosin. I take the doxazosin at night or break it in half and take it in the afternoon if my pressure is running high. It dose not work at all for me regarding prostate issues."

"I have been on this medication for 2 weeks now and hoping side effects subside. I'm 47yrs old with a Ventricula Septal Defect and It has worked as in lowering my BP but I am struggling in Taekwondo training and have had to sit out due to dizziness and racing heartbeat then swollen feet then I sleep afterwards. This med was added to Lostartan and Felodipine out of desperation to lower BP as other meds didn't suit but this one is probably the worse for side effects so far."

"I had radio therapy for testicular cancer in 1977 - aged 30. A camera revealed scarring to my bladder neck in about 2005, and telangectasia (spelling may be wrong). Doxazosin initially prescribed for persistent high blood pressure reasons at 2 mg, but recently raised to 4 then 8 mg per day. Higher doses maybe cause a pounding heart for 1 to 3 hours after waking - not nice. Also a dry mouth and nasal congestion. But urine flow much better when taking the drug. I should also mention that I have various allergies."

"I have had good results using Cardura, but when using a generic, I had problems with dizziness, eyes seemed to be crossed, weakness. The pill lists lactose as an "inert" ingredient. I have had milk allergies since I was a teenager . Since I cut the 1 mg tab of the very small Cardura in half I was not getting much lactose and it worked fine. With the generic at least 10 times larger, I was getting much more of the lactose to which I was allergic, so I was having severe side effects. This is the first time I have found the list of inert ingredients. I was allergic to many medicines before this and the addition of lactose may have been the reason."

"On 1 mg and sleep well on a night dose. I have to be careful not to move too quickly. Mornings are ok but then by noon I get so exhausted I could fall asleep driving, at stop lights, at the table. Exhausted moving from room to room. Forget stairs. Stopped it twice to see and no exhaustion. It’s a tiny little pill, small dosage and happens hours sfter dosing. Bewildering? Took it last night and felt hollowed again out this afternoon and unable to move for hours. Not a good med for me for HBP. Only positive is if you have an over active bladder it helps quiet that down."

"I have historically had higher blood pressure (BP), normally in the mid-130s though in the doctor's office, it can increase to the 150s. I am 75 and been on amlodipine and irbesartan for over 10 years and tolerated it well. My doctor recently added doxazosin 1 mg once a day. Within 3 weeks, side effects became more evident, e.g., headache, dizzy, lightheadedness, and fatigue. I was advised by my doctor to stop taking it. I have been off the medication for 48 hours and am feeling better with decreasing side effects. Still a little light-headed and tired. BP is in my typical mid to high 130s. Doxazosin is not well tolerated by my body. Still on amlodipine and irbesartan. I think I should work on weight reduction versus adding another BP med. Am 195 lbs and will try to get to 180 by year-end."

"Doxazosin 1mg reduced BP from 141/90 to 135/85 over 4 week period (64 year old male non-smoker). But 2mg after 2-3 weeks increased BP average to steady 158/95, caused chest pains, arrhythmia, anxiety and general feeling of being unwell. It took 3 days off all Doxazosin to get back to 135/85."

"The penny has only just dropped after talking to my daughter- a senior nurse. I couldn't understand why I felt as if I was about to faint and be woozy and nauseous when I stood up or walked. I put this down to a painfully torn ligament in my knee and the ever-so-long time it was taking to heal enough for me to walk more than a few meters. I also suddenly couldn't read the captions on TV and my neck ached for no apparent reason. This was put down to eye drops for glaucoma. This is one of three medications for high blood pressure. I will stop taking this 2 mg dose and hopefully feel normal again. My blood pressure varies enormously, so I can't say with certainty whether this has helped or not from a medical perspective."
