Chlorthalidone for High Blood Pressure "My average BP 125 to 145 by 65 to 90. After taking these 50 mg and 25 mg Hygroton tablets under doctor's advice, my body became very itchy, with rash and hives, especially around my neck, back, and ears. Also, pins and needles in my ankles and tiredness during the day."

For High Blood Pressure "I started chlorthalidone for newly diagnosed HBP, and it worked immediately. At first, no side effects at all. Then I realized I always had muscle aches, and I found myself sleeping more and more. I'd go to sleep at night, take my son to school, and come back home to sleep another 5 hours. I now always have chest pressure and the worst. I had 4 cavities within months of starting it. My dentist was shocked. I was in my 40s and had never had a single cavity. He immediately expressed his concern, asked about what I'm doing that might cause dry mouth, and told me to talk to my doctor about my new medication, but when I mentioned it as a side note on my visit, he didn't think anything of it. Now my gums have receded to nearly nothing. This can't be reversed! I'm so afraid I'm losing all of my teeth and have only been on this a year!!!"

For High Blood Pressure "While the medication seems to work, the side effects are unacceptable. My dose is 25 mg. It leaves me very lightheaded all day and with absolutely no energy at all. I spend most of the day in bed. My muscles become very fatigued with minimal exertion, and I develop rapid heartbeat and respirations."

For High Blood Pressure "Been on this for 5 days, and my heart races very high just standing, and I am out of breath just standing at the kitchen sink. Heartbeat would jump up to 150 just standing. For the last 2 nights, when I get up to go pee, I feel my body being way off. Not like dizziness but falling. I almost fell in the tub last night. Now, today I can’t eat or it makes me really sick to my stomach."

For Edema "This drug is dangerous! Doctor prescribed chlorthalidone for fluid retention. I took it for 4 days. I began experiencing extreme cramping on day 2. Got diarrhea, cramping from the neck down so severe I was in tears. It tore my stomach up. Day seven (note I haven't taken any more for 3 days), I am still recovering from the stomach pain and diarrhea. I'm rating this drug a 1. What good is it if you can't take it because the side effects are so severe?"

For Edema "Pitting edema in both legs and feet for over two years. Tried many loop diuretics, but they did absolutely nothing to reduce fluid, and the previous doctor never suggested thiazide-type diuretics nor seemed interested in finding out what was causing my edema, so I finally found a new doc. She put me on 25 mg chlorthalidone every day, which worked very well. I lost 15 pounds of fluid within two weeks, and my legs were back to normal. However, my sodium level dropped to 129, and my doctor asked me to discontinue taking it. But she also forgot to tell me to reduce fluid intake, and I'm pretty sure that's why my sodium dropped. Trying again with a 15 mg dose and restricting fluid intake to 1.5 liters a day or less. Will update my experience in a couple of weeks."

For High Blood Pressure "This drug is amazing. Using it for about 8 years and 25 mg is all I need to keep my pressure under control. The best part is it's inexpensive and has virtually no side effects (potassium is an issue as with all diuretics, and sometimes I get a rash). I tried hydrochlorothiazide, and it was useless. This is the only one for me."

For High Blood Pressure "I was started on chlorthalidone because losartan didn't lower my blood pressure, and I was having too many side effects with lisinopril. It lowered my blood pressure well for a few months and then seemed to stop working. During these three months, I was also dealing with heart palpitations. I completely stopped caffeine and alcohol. I had a Holter monitor test and was told I was experiencing harmless PVCs and PACs. My doctor doubled my chlorthalidone to try to get my BP back under control, and then I started to feel really terrible. Headaches, muscle cramping all over my body, weakness, fatigue, frequent heart palpitations. I thought it was just a little bit of dehydration since this medication is a diuretic, but my labs showed that my potassium dropped to severely low. I was taken off the medication and had my potassium replaced. Once my potassium was back to normal, I started to feel better, and after a few weeks, I also noticed that my heart palpitations had completely stopped."

For High Blood Pressure "I was prescribed 25 mg to add to another B/P med I was taking, as my B/P was always over 136 - 155 systolic. I myself reduced it to 1/2 tab after 6 weeks as so lightheaded + up to toilet 3 - 4 times a night! Have just stopped it today after 8.5 weeks as even though I'm fit (73 years), I'm finding I now cannot get up steep hills without constantly stopping. I'm in training to do a 2-day tramp/hike in a week and got so scared yesterday when at my very large local library and walking up four flights of stairs, I had to stop halfway up the second staircase - got the lift! so my B/P now always 114/74 to 126/86 and I drink lots of water, don't drink alcohol. Just not worth the weak feeling in my legs and the fainting feeling throughout my body."

Chlorthalidone for High Blood Pressure "Just started taking this a week ago. Has not yet effectively lowered BP 150/90. I have had side effects of cold sweats, weakness, nausea, and erectile dysfunction, in order of severity. Planning to contact my doctor if symptoms do not lessen within another week."

For High Blood Pressure "Horrid! I can’t get off the damn pills! Didn’t help with BP at all, but my kidneys now will not work without this stuff. I literally gain a pound an hour if I stop taking it! Worst decision ever! Side effects are the ones making my life dependent on a drug that I didn’t need in the first place!"

For Edema "Chlorthalidone was a game changer for me. The fluid retention in my feet, legs, and hands was terrible. Within a week of taking 50 mg a day, all my fluid retention disappeared. Have been on it for around two years now. Couldn't imagine not having it. It also lowered my blood pressure to near what is acceptable. Two positive things from the pill. I can't thank my doctor enough. The only negative is having to pee every hour, even through the night. But I can handle that trade-off. Hope this review helps someone else have better health and a better life."

For High Blood Pressure "43-year-old female prescribed 25 mg chlorthalidone for management of high blood pressure. I have a love-hate for chlorthalidone. It lowered my blood pressure and I lost weight due to its diuretic effects, and it corrected my irregular menstrual cycle pattern as a happy bonus. Now for the bad news. Thiazide diuretics are known to increase cholesterol in some people. After 1 year of being on this medication, my cholesterol skyrocketed to 300. My doctor wanted to put me on cholesterol meds, and I said, hold on, this is not normal, and we switched me to amlodipine instead to control my BP. Within one month of switching, we re-checked my cholesterol, and it went back to normal. So be aware of this side effect. I am still on the hunt for a BP medication as amlodipine caused feet and leg swelling, lisinopril gave me a nasty cough, and amlodipine is giving me abdominal cramping, bloating, weight gain, and general fatigue. I give it a 7 out of 10 due to side effects."

For Edema "After 2 months of being on 25 mg chlorthalidone for pitting edema and losing 15 lbs of fluid in my legs, it stopped working. Experienced side effects of low sodium and chloride levels and dehydration, but stuck with it since the effects of edema were worse. Weight had stabilized, but then started gaining a pound a day. Dose was increased to 50 mg, but had no effect and continued to gain original fluid back. I've already tried so many different diuretics, including both loop and thiazide types, and none worked at all until chlorthalidone. I'm tired and frustrated that the doctor can't even figure out what's causing the edema, which at this point is several years."

For High Blood Pressure "I began taking this medication about 5 months ago because the hypertension medication I'd been taking for years was causing a slow heart rate. The 50 mg dosage was prescribed, once daily. I had no problems until 2 months ago when my pressure began to rise. My physician advised me to take my other medication (hydralazine) 3 times daily instead of 2. This worked for a month, then the pressure rose again. I didn't connect side effects I was having, like dry mouth, tinnitus, dry eyes, and ankle pain, with chlorthalidone because I had been taking it for months with no problems. I was already taking potassium supplements because I take other medicine to help prevent kidney stones. After reading user comments here, I am going to check to see if the inconsistent effectiveness of this drug could be from the pharmacy supplier. It may explain why it works for a while, then doesn't."

For High Blood Pressure "After battling high blood pressure for years and switching to different medications that didn’t work, my new Dr suggested this medication with losartan. It was a life changer for me. It’s been 1 year since taking this medication, and I can finally eat food without my blood pressure spiking."

For Edema "I am 57 with sporadic edema, and was given this drug because I asked for something less powerful than what I was taking. Two days later, I was in the emergency room, having difficulty breathing and a racing heart rate with almost no exertion. Symptoms went away a day after stopping the drug. Perhaps my physician misprescribed this, but it almost did me in. Awful reaction."
